New Orleans, LA. From Canal St. to Wolenburg Park, along the Mississippi River to Toulouse St. to Chartres St. to Canal St. I dragged myself out of bed early to get in a short run before my meeting. It was nice to see the city in person after all the stories read and watched about hurricane Katrina. The west side of town where the airport is seemed relatively good on the outside. In the downtown and inside the French Quarters the city looked somewhat better than before the hurricane. The Superdome had some discoloration from repairs. Fewer people were out on the streets than I remembered. Some storefronts were boarded up but Canal St. had gotten new sidewalks, new palm trees and was almost looking unscathed. Bourbon St. was the same. Music was in the streets. By looking around more carefully, I could see a big revolving restaurant on top of a building with heavy wind damage. It looked like someone bumped a flying saucer and it crash landed on the building corner. The view from my hotel toward Lake Ponchartrain revealed a big collapsed roof. I suspect worse ocurred inside buildings with mold damage. My meeting was on the east side of the city where the hurricane eye had turned as it missed the downtown. Destruction going that way was rampant with miles of boarded up apartment buildings visible along the interstate. Some had brick walls knocked down at the corners. The busiest place open seemed to be the Home Depot and only a few fast food places were open. Traveling this whole trip was slow. A lot of things moved at the pace of The Big Easy; including me.
