Orienteering (Course Setting) 4:10:13 [1] 6.0 km (41:42 / km)

Back in Maryland, setting controls in the snow and ice for the QOC Bowie/Fran Uhler meet. It got dark but I was prepared to do some night-o. Icy on the trails but nice with powdery snow in the woods.

Running (Street & Trail) 16:18 [3] 2.1 mi (7:46 / mi)

From the Whindham Summerfield in St. Louis, up Craig Dr. to Craig View Dr. and back. It was snowy and icy on the sidewalk and late at night.

Running (Street & Trail) 1:18:50 [3] 10.0 mi (7:53 / mi)

In Forest Park, St. Louis. Tried to meet Eric Buckley and local runners in the park but snow related traffic had delayed my arrival. I started from the museum and wandered until I found the bike trail near the skating rink. About 1 1/2" of snow were on the ground and more was blowing in. I followed footsteps on the serpentine trail past: the Science Center with its inverted cooling tower shape and dinasaurs, the ball fields, the Wild Lights display, the Zoo, a large mud turtle sculpture, the golf course and returned to the museum in about 46 minutes--probably just short of 6 miles. I wanted to do at least an hour and was enjoying the snowy night so I set off on another loop wanting to see what part of the trail I'd missed--not too much. The snow was deeper now and covering the footsteps. It stuck to my shoes making them heavy. I got to the Science Center and tried to cut across the park but got disoriented in the dark w/o a compass and found myself back on the trail. Correcting, I wandered a bit more across some fields, etc...and happily found the museum again. It was a very enjoyable run. My hip hurt a lot afterward but not during.

From Craig Rd. in St. Louis, roads through neighborhoods south of Page Ave. Hilly and cold as a windy cold front moved-in.

At Iron Hill for the Mid-Atlantic Championships

Orienteering (Competition) 1:00:44 [4] 7.37 km (8:14 / km)

Mid-Atlantic Championships at Iron Hill, DL. Ran well except at the end. See Split List.

Running (Warm-up) 5:00 [1] 0.4 mi (12:30 / mi)

Warm-up in the cold for the Mid-Atlantic Championships Relay.

Orienteering (Competition) 12:02 [4] 2.0 km (6:01 / km)

Leading leg of the Mid-Atlantic Championships at Iron Hill. Stayed behind Mihai through the first 3 controls and punched 2nd at each. I hadn't seen Mikel Platt before who also was running near us. When Mihai cut off right on the way to #4 thinking we were too high, I continued on. Mikel had gotten a little ahead here. I closed a little distance but couldn't catch him on the trail. I finished second ,behind by a couple seconds. John Torrance took the next leg and Marek Filicko anchored our winning team!
