Adams Morgan--Washington, DC. From Kalorama Park, to 18th St., NW, and Columbia Rd., NW. I walked from the meeting place for the Summer Short Series to the start of the first sprint. It was nice to be in Adam's Morgan again. Other than passing thru, it'd been a long time. Since it was morning and the weather was pleasant, the streets were being well walked without being crowded. Adam's Morgan had gone through various up's and down's and it looked like it was well functioning, despite there being some homeless people.

Summer Short Series (SSS), Adams Morgan--Washington, DC. Sam McAleese debuted a new map of the Adam's Morgan area. Sam is formerly from a Chicago orienteering club where he'd been a club mapper. He had been putting this map together for a while. I started on the "Lanier" course from the corner of 18th St., NW, and Columbia Rd., NW; possibly named for Lanier Pl., NW. The initial controls were short easy legs. They let me get used to the mapping which included the buildings, streets, pedestrian areas, walls and fences. Several streamers were missing, likely to have been pulled down by passers-by. This wasn't a problem but sometimes it required some extra searching. I wasn't always running into and out of controls knowing which direction to go after punching. The control circles and leg lines were sometime hard to see amidst building symbols. As the legs got longer the course also got hillier and more technically difficult. I made one error leaving control #11 where there was a 5-way intersection; 2 of which were alleys. It turned out that had left my compass in another bag. My usual spare had disappeared, and what I had was an old boy scout face plate, so I wasn't using it much. The rest of the course was fine but I had definately slowed down towards the end.

Hiking (Street & Trail) 12:34 [3] 0.68 mi (18:29 / mi)

Adams Morgan--Washington, DC. I walked from the end of the Lanier course on Ontario Rd., NW, to Kalorama Park where I'd gotten a new map and some water. Later I walked to 18th St., NW., and Kalorama Rd., NW for the start of the next course. A nice thing about the city seemed to be that people seemed more socialized--given the proximity, it seems an obvious expectation, but it's counter to how many view city people. With few exceptions, people I passed by were sharing sidewalks, walking places with friends and family, and generally talking to other real people rather than being on their phones. Kalorama Park was getting busier and busier with people, parents and kids alike. Later I saw groups of 20 and 30 year old people picnicking on the grass. Vibrant would be a good description.

Adams Morgan--Washington, DC. Starting from 18th St., NW., and Kalorama Rd., NW. the Ad Mo course was a little less hilly but started with more time in the sun. It had started to warm-up by this time. The course also started with more technical navigation amongst a plaza with walls fences and twisty stairway. It was taking me too long to figure out which way to go, so I went along the main road to backdoor the first control. This may have been optimal. Midway in the course I was in Meridian Hill Park. I think I wandered up to part of this park in the 1990s but it was larger than I'd thought. It was a nice area like a much smaller mall but it had some fences, walls and trails amongst gardens. I apparently caught someone else but promptly made a small mistake as I passed him. With the vegetation I didn't see if I remained ahead or really got left behind--if I was close behind and apparently moving at a similar pace, I should have seen the same person again but I didn't. For leg 17 to 18, I backed out and went around to the north. It didn't look like I could get through the alleys to the south. This let me preview controls 20 and 19.

Adams Morgan--Washington, DC. After the 2nd sprint, I walked back from an alley near Champlain St., NW to Kalorama Park.

Summer Short Series (SSS), Adams Morgan--Washington, DC. For my last course, the Kalorama, I was able to start right in the park where we'd met. In the 1980s, I used to pass this park walking up from Dupont Circle to eat in Adams Morgan (I had my first sushi at Perry's on a rooftop--it was still there!). I started a few minutes after Jon Torrance, whom I later saw when the course looped back. Since I was tired and sweaty, I almost didn't go out on this loop but I'd heard that Peggy was already out on her 3rd (doing the hillier Lanier that I'd done earlier). I did make one mistake leaving #9 by crossing a major street when I didn't need to. I'd lost time crossing back. Despite the error, for this 3rd course, I was much better about memorizing routes and knowing which way to go so that I could run into and out of controls without needing to stop. Sam put some controls in places that allowed us be optimal and skip the alleys.

After the sprinting, Sam stayed long enough to hold our picnic table and bring back some lunch. About 8 of us caught-up with one another. IMG_1858

I had intended to cycle but threatening rain changed my mind. From Lock 10 on the C&O Canal Towpath, I ran across the towpath to a trail leading towards Swainson Island. That was a mistake. It turned out to be an area with forking trails. Even when on the main path, it was overgrown. There were some stinging nettles and deadfall to get around. A seeming dead-end at a wall just before getting back to the towpath forced me across a stream. I got on a better trail then but it still was overgrown and had deadfall blockages. It took me 12 minutes from the start to get back to the towpath--a distance of only 0.76 miles. It had started raining just about when I started too. On the towpath, I ran through some puddles up to where Rock Run crosses under the canal; just outside the Capital Beltway. Finishing-up was better but even there I was stiff like I usually am after cycling. I stretched and was surprised at how inflexible my hamstrings were.

I started things off right getting a workout in after work. It was very humid because of an earlier rain. In some places the pavement was still damp and I had to be careful on curves. I had a tailwind starting off for the first 2 miles. I didn't feel so strong so I paced myself. At a traffic light, another cyclist warned me to keep some distance since he was getting over COVID-19. I led him for a way before he passed me but later, I caught back up. A group of cyclists seemed like they were partying or having a time trial finish at the bottom of Ridge Rd. I hit a lot of traffic lights but this ride was within 4 seconds of the last time I rode the loop.

Since it had been in Kissy's log a while back, I thought to checkout the Fresh Pond Trails in Bethany. Peggy hiked with me. It was mostly a green tunnel and some of it was buggy. We could have taken some out and back side trails to Fresh Pond, but most of them looked like they were overgrown not far down the path. We needed to finish-up quickly anyway, so that we could meet Max, whom we'd dropped-off at Bethany Beach. Bethany was a lot further away from Lewes than I'd thought it'd be. I had been confusing it with Dewey, which is right next to Rehoboth.

I did get wiped out with not one but two waves. The second came right behind the first when my back was turned. Fortunately there was no injury from it.

Bethesda, MD. From Northfield Rd., to Georgetown via Park Ln., Glenbrook Rd., Falls Rd., and the Capital Crescent Trail, then to Ohio Dr., SE in DC, clockwise around Haines Point, then along Main Ave. SE, to round the Tidal Basin, Independence Ave., SW, to Beach Dr., to Grosvenor Rd., to Fletcher Rd., to the Bethesda Trolley Trail, to Beech Dr., to Old Georgetown Rd., to Huntington Pkwy, to Custer Rd., to Northfield Rd. I got started at around 11am which is a bit later than I'd have preferred. Waking up earlier, I wasn't mentally ready. It was around 90 F and very humid starting out and the temperature rose to 95 F as I continued. I quickly found out about a mechanical failure with my rear brake---I suspect rust formed after an earlier wet ride. I couldn't budge the cable. I went on knowing I needed to be a little carefeul. I felt okay for a little while. I had to slow to pass people sever times. Headwinds getting to Haines Point slowed me and I downshifted to stop myself from struggling. I got passed by 2 people on Haines Point. With the wind at my back, going up Rock Creek Park wasn't bad at all. After passing Broad Branch Rd., I was fading so I took a break near the police station, +23 miles out. I took a longer than usual break, reading about the Tour de France's troubles with the heat, and how they will likely have to make changes in the future. I drank a lot. Once I got up to go again, my core temperature was better. It felt so nice starting out as my sweat once again cooled me. This lasted for several miles. However getting up Grosvenor Rd., I was fading again, and I crawled home.

Monticello, VA. Peggy, Max, and I toured President Thomas Jefferson's home. This was my second time but the first was long enough back, that I could only remember the entry foyer. We had a very good guide who explained a lot, giving the good and the bad of life there. It was quite interesting. We got some time to walk and explore on our own in which we saw slave quarters, buildings designed to keep the place running, flower gardens, the vegetable garden, and the family graveyard. All of the design work and thought was nice to see, including the ex-President's penchant for measuring things. It was hot, in the 90s F.

Charlottesville, VA. From University Avenue, Peggy, Max, and I walked the University of Virginia (UVA) campus to give Max even more to choose from and to think about. Our start was near the Memorial to the Enslaved. We looped by the Rotunda, down the Mall, past the UVA Amphitheater, along Cabell Dr., across McCormick Rd., back across Emmitt St. via a pedestrian bridge, along Newcomb Rd. North, back the Rotunda, and University Ave. It was around 95 F, sunny and humid, so we took it easy. The university would make an excellent sprint map. It has many tunnels, overpasses, walls, and a lot of contour. The buildings often have lots of corners and canopy. It would be difficult to map all of the detail. This was basically the end of our places to see on this trip.

Blacksburg, VA. From the south end of the stadium, Peggy, Max, and I; and a bunch of other prospective VA Tech students took an organized tour across the campus. We didn't get very far relatively speaking. There were a lot of academic building we never got close to and we only walked through the Ambler Johnson dorm lobby. Still, the walk was nice, and it was good to see my alma mater again! Max surprised me with liking the campus. He said it moved up in his ranking. He enjoyed seeing the mountains being nearby, and the mix of modern and old architecture. I think it fits him academically too.

Blacksburg, VA. After getting a campus tour and eating lunch, the afternoon was hot. Instead of doing our usual plans we napped and watched television. We decided to load an app and rent some ebikes. However, when we got to a bunch of them , a sign indicated the whole system was out of service. Instead, we decided to do some orienteering.

From Duck Pond Rd. Peggy, Max, and I used a campus area map made by Brian Mayer. It was not clear what the scale was, but I think it close to being 1:10, 000. Brian had told me that it needed updates and that it was hard to keep up with the constant changes. We enjoyed walking around the campus, picking and choosing controls in score-o fashion. The area would make a pretty good sprint map if done at 1:4,000. Maybe someday I’ll make one.

Grandfather Mountain, NC. From the Upper Parking Lot, Max, Peggy, and I started out on the Grandfather Trail together, heading towards Calloway Peak. We got a late start and Peggy was only starting her own loop. At a fork, Max and I went out using the Underwood Trail (it seemed like less climb but it had less view). We rejoined the Grandfather Trail and took it until just before the Alpine Meadow. We had to turn back there in order to finish by 6pm, when the upper parking lot closed and trails were officially closed too. Max and I took a short side trip down to the Indian House Cave--a rather large and somewhat damp cave for being so close to the top of the ridge. It was on the leeward side too, making it a great shelter.
Max and I stayed on the Grandfather Trail on the way back, going over Macrae Peak. We even took the side trail to the Macrae summit too. We got back to meet Peggy about 15 minutes late but it worked out okay with the people who were closing the lot.

Though short, this is amongst the most rugged of hikes that I remember doing. It's a jumble of small boulders much of the way. It's North Carolina's answer to Old Rag Mountain in VA--less climb but much rockier. There were some ladders and some short steel cable sections. The ridge is very sharp in places. We felt the strong winds. Others hikes that rank up there include: backpacking the Napali Coast, HI; doing the Knife Edge Trail on Mt. Khatadin, ME; maybe parts of climbing Mt. Washington, NH; Angels Landing in Zion NP has exposure too but is short; a 16 mile spring day backpacking with post holing across the continental divide at Flatop Mountain in Rocky Mountain NP was tough too; up the Shilthorn near Interlaken, Switzerland and back was tough too. It was cool, in the 70s but still very humid. Parts of this were steep and had lots of stairs but overall it wasn't very difficult. We had to turn around at the overlook of Chimney Tops since fires had closed the rest of the trail to the summit.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Cades Cove. From the road, we hiked on the trail through the field to John Oliver's cabin. At the cabin another hiker told us that people in the field had been walking past a bear club that was visible from the trail in the forest--we went back via the forest to check it out but initially we didn't find anything. I reasoned that the bear must have wandered into the field so I went back there. Though I couldn't see it at first, I noticed some grasses moving differently from the wind pushing it. After looking there long enough, the bear cub poked his head up. I'd given away his hiding spot--several other people watched as he poked his head up several more times.

Rock City, GA, on Lookout Mountain, above Chattanooga, TN. This was a kitschy place with a mix of natural rock and man-made areas. It was still rather interesting. The trail went through several spots that are the closest thing east of the Mississippi that I've seen, to being a slot canyon. The cliffs were nice with great views. A fake waterfall still looked nice. I was surprised to see the huge balanced rock resting on 3 points. The cave was a surprise that I liked until we got to the fairyland room with a small castle, somewhat silly gnomes, and other figures for the kids, lit by black light. Max enjoyed swinging the swinging bridge while I was on it but I was un-nerved.

After the rain, we saw the old Chattanooga Choo train station Choo too--it's now a hotel but they still exhibit the trains. After lunch, we also saw the Hunter Museum of American Art. This was a nice quality museum with a great view high over the Tennessee River. Chattanooga looks like it has a lot going for it.

Birmingham, AL. After flying in and meeting Peggy, she, Max and I watched Muyithai World Games medal round competitions in different weight classes. Max and I found them interesting but could see how the competitors risk long term head injuries via taking repeated blows. One woman was knocked out.

After watching enough we walked from Kelly Ingram Park to Lynn Park. We were followed by what we thought to be a homeless man who’d asked us for money. He as hard to understand. Though from a distance, he followed for about 0.4 miles. A park service guy speculated that the guy had wanted to be our tour guide and would probably ask for money if we’d let him. We saw statues in the park depicting Civil Rights protesters and the various historic sites such as: A hotel Dr. Martin Luther King had stayed in, his old church, the church bombing site where 4 young girls were killed (below), historic Black owned business locations, and a monument to the Temptations. We also wandered back to Kelly Ingraham Park. From there we spied to the new parkland underneath Interstate 59, the City Walk. There were exhibits, musicians, performers, and vendors there as a social activity for the World Games. We walked back to where we started to finish. It was around 90 F and humid the whole time.

Wolf Run Shoals Rd., VA. From the small parking lot, I jogged towards the end of the road to get to the start of the Summer Short Series. I'd gotten to the park very early but I decided to help with carpooling from the central parking lot. Leaving later from there meant not getting a parking spot close to the event start.

SSS: Fountain Head Regional Park, VA. John Organek setup the training for today. We started at the end of Wolf Run Shoals Rd. and did a loop on the ridge to the west initially. After the first 6 controls, the loop took us into the into the central part of the park, all the way down to the reservoir, then back up to Wolf Run Shoals Rd. The training this week involved a map with no trails or roads and all control markers were on the ground--two sticks tied with streamers into an "X". The map printing was a bit light. John used the draft mode of Condes to print course comparison--this showed all course combinations on one map. The event proved to be difficult, but not as much as the week before. To see the marker, one generally had to be within a few meters of it. Some were behind rocks or brush; some were in depressions.

I apparently started near the end of the group. For a while, I caught people going to every control. I was able to run the downhills and flat areas but not much of the uphill stuff--though much is open, a lot of the hills in this area are pretty steep. Some of the central area had both mapped unmapped deadfall. My legs still felt fatigued from the cycling that I did this week. Since I was moving so slowly and sweating a lot (low 80s F? and near 100% humidity--there were storm warnings and rainbows after the event), I decided to skip controls 9 and 10. They didn't add a lot of distance but led across the big complex reentrant system in the central part of the park, thus adding a lot of climb. I hit everything right on target for a while. Towards the end, there was more unmapped deadfall which involved some guessing as to which way was the best around. The last few guys whom I'd caught, caught back up with me through there. I would have finished with them if for not having used and unmapped trail and gotten onto the wrong side of a long line of deadfall when leading them. After the training event, several of us ate at a Mexican restaurant in Lorton. The air was much cooler when we came out.

After about 8 miles, and past the first climb, I may have settled into a better pace. I felt better and seemed to move well. However, at times, my left leg was getting more worn out than my right leg. I got showered on. Climbing out of the valley I was relatively strong again. Finishing-up maybe some tailwinds helped me finish strongly, and that was refreshing.

The heat of the day had lessened but it was still pretty warm and humid. I rode this route a week ago. Both days were humid but today was hotter. I struggled more. Not sleeping well and some early but modest headwinds probably caused that but my right knee was hurting during the ride at times too. It turned out that I was only 35 seconds slower.

From Cedar Ln. in Rock Creek Park, MD. I ran up the Rock Creek Trail to Beach Dr. to the intersection wiht Grosvenor Rd., then back. Starting out my right knee only hurt a little bit. That went away. It was a nice low humidity day in the low 80s F or upper 70s F but fatigue set up just before the turnaround. I was feeling every small rise, even as flat as this route is. I was a little slower coming back. I passed a deer by the side of the paved trail. I was looking down or to the other side of the trail, so I didn't notice coming up on it. It was so tame. I could almost have reached and touched it, but it was unconcerned.

With a busy schedule, I got out a little earlier today. Temperatures throughout the ride were in the comfortable 70's and low 80s F. Following my old commuting route was kind of nice with the general downhill and flat terrain into DC. I started feeling headwinds along the river but as I rode up along the Anacostia River, I had the headwinds the whole way. It was 25 miles before I took a break in the Greenbelt/Beltway Plaza area--as I rode them, I was remembering the trails I had been running going back about 35 years ago. Interesting it was to see how much that area and other areas had changed, and how much had stayed the same. This was the first time riding over the new Frederick Douglas Bridge (over the Anacostia River)--the 3rd version of it since my parents drove me over it about 60 years ago. I rode rough roads on Powder Mill Rd. due to construction, but it was always rough there. Heading west across the hills wasn't bad but I was clearly going slower. I did push sometimes during this ride, sometimes motivated by other the better riders I'd caught and tried to stay ahead of. The paved trails on the route were busy with people riding and walking. After the ride, my right knee hurt and was wobbly when I walked. I hurried to clean-up and even after drinking water at home, I was 2.5 pounds lighter. I was hurrying to get out again to take Samantha out. She and I had a pretty good day eating lunch, shopping, and seeing a movie before I brought her back. Max had a relaxing day and mowed the lawn. Peggy had an adventurous hike and long drive. We were all doing our things.

Summer Short Series (SSS). Mike Dvorsky setup the SSS event for today. He'd made a new map of the Huntingtown Natural Resource Management Area. It was near Kings Landing State Park, and of course Huntingtown, MD. People had the option of a contours only course or a regular map. It was all at 1:5,000. The area is tricky, requiring a lot of attention. I used the contours only map for the training exercise. There were no trails, roads, rides streams ditches or any other brown map symbol. In fact, Mike went too far taking off the index contours too. We had clue descriptions but most of the time, the feature hadn't been printed. A few controls were bingo. It had rained a lot in the last 24 hours and was overcast when we got going. The woods were not bad. There were areas of deadfall but ways around it. Reentrants were plentiful but steep. The streamer for the first control had fallen to the ground, so the early starters bunched-up looking for it. I went 3 or 4 times looking for control #7, but never found it. I did relocate once by recognizing I'd been across the top of one reentrant before. Missing #7, I was brought back on course by Charles Carrick, who had a full map. We were near #10, so I just picked-up the course from there. Turnout was pretty good--just under 20 which is not bad for an event farther away from most, and on a day that was supposed to be rainy (it was not raining as we ran).

After another not so great Friday working, I blew off some stress riding. At first I felt stronger and faster. There was no wind except what I made for myself and the temperatures were moderate. I made sure I was spinning and perhaps slowed a bit after 5 miles. I was surprised not to get passed. I even caught some people at traffic lights and other places, and then stayed ahead. Two riders I passed like this were obviously in better shape. I'd seen them ride together before. They chatted a bit behind me, sometimes getting closer on inclines. Turning away, I started off the climb back to Bethesda by going up Ridge Rd. with a commuter ahead of me. He may have been close in age and initially moved just slower than my pace. After the first rises, I passed him and opened up a good bit of ground. I recovered better on this ride, being able to push more at times.

I'd wanted to do some version of this ride for a while but I thought it was going to be pretty hilly. It turned out to be not so bad. There were climbs but most were not steep. Going in the direction that I did, I was mostly going against traffic and with steeper downhills. I went out without really checking the weather since it had been clearing-up all afternoon. It was humid and eventually I saw dark clouds. I was rained on lightly in the last 1.5 miles. Starting out, I was sore but eventually that abated. I went a little easier to compensate and that turned out to be good, since I didn't need to stop except at traffic lights.

Arlington, VA. From Courthouse Plaza, 15th/14th Street to Arlington Blvd. to the Iwo Jima Memorial, and to a spot near the Netherlands Carillon Bells. From there, Peggy, Max, and his girlfriend watched the national fireworks for the Fourth of July Celebration. The show was short--only 18 minutes this year. However it was pretty good and I got to practice some photography. We'd seen a movie and had dinner before the show. The crowds were big, but not very bad. We were able walk back, then drive all they way home in just 63 minutes after the fireworks ended. Earlier in the day we'd seen my cousin Saji, for a cookout at her place.

From Columbia, Md., I rode home to Bethesda, MD. Peggy and my sister Rubina dropped me off after we had visited our daughter Samantha, and after we had lunch. Samantha was tired and less talkative but she got more awake later.

The route was from a shopping center on Old Dobbin Ln., north to Tamar Dr.., to Hayshed Ln., to the Elkhorn Branch Trail., past Lake Elkhorn, to the Patuxent Branch Trail, to S. Carlinda Ave., to Shaker Dr. to Seneca Dr., to Martin Rd./Harriet Tubman Ln., to Cedar Ln./Sanner Rd., to Guilford Rd., to Pindell School Rd., to Scaggsville Rd. (Rte. 216), to Lime Kiln Rd., to Browns Bridge Rd./Ednor Rd., to New Hampshire Rd., to Randolph Rd., to Kemp Mill Rd., to Arcola Ave., to Lamberton Dr., to the Sligo Creek Trail., to the Sligo Creek Pkwy., to Forest Glen Rd., to Beach Dr., to Joyce Rd., NW (Washington, D,C,), to Ross Dr., NW, to Ridge Rd., NW., to Glover Rd., NW, to Military Rd., NW, to 27th St., NW/Utah Ave. NW, to Tennyson St., NW, to Western Ave., NW to Summerfield Rd. (MD), to Oxford St., to Broad Branch Rd., to Brookville Rd., to Bradley Blvd., to Glenbrook Rd. to Wilson Ln. to Custer Rd., to Northfield Rd.

I in my memory the route from Columbia to Bethsda was +40 miles. I'd shifted some roads from what I did about 3 weeks ago. However, the ride 3 weeks ago was really only just over 30 miles. I could see that I'd be short of my goal for the day (+40 miles) so I added on going down Rock Creek Park to add-on. There was some flood and storm damage there. I climbed out of the valley on Ross Dr., which is very nice and looks like a mountain road. Starting in the middle of the day again, much of the ride was hot. Every now and then I'd hit shaded downhill places which were great. As teh sun got lower, the ride got nicer too. I was surprised to see Peggy walking in Bethesda with about 2 miles to go. My right knee was hurting a bit for the last few miles.

Prince William Forest, Turkey Run Ridge. Matt Smith set good courses for those who came. As we were driving-in a lot of new treefall from what looked like straight-line winds could be seen the whole way from the park entrance. There was even a road sign noting that the administration was still cleaning it up. This wasn't too bad for the courses we ran but there was enough unmapped deadfall that visual observation and route planning helped a lot. The deadfall was worse at the tops of hills and ridges so it was often beneficial to drop lower. I ran the shortest course though I had thought about adding-on, using a control from the longer course. The heat/humidity and moving slowly through the brush made me think better of it. I did not take water with me, and it might have helped.

S-45 - I ran the trail and left the trail from a bend. Some deadfall was in my way. Going on the right side of it ended up meaning that I had to cut back a little. Helen Dougherty was in the area.

45-37 - I ran high along ridge until crossing the trail, and then I angled down to the valley. I stayed away from the stream where there was less grass but I went into it in time to see the stream confluence. Going in-between the streams up a ridge, visibility was not optimal but I knew where I was from changes in steepness. Dennis Dougherty was coming down the ridge and asked if I'd seen the control. I told him it was still ahead and I went to it with him behind me.

37-32 - I wanted to stay more to the left but ended up cutting to the right because the map showed climb and vegetation ahead. Dennis passed me after I'd cut right but he was still to the left of me. I got up to the trail and ran along it briefly before cutting in and following the reentrant to the control.

32-40 - I went along the right side of the creek to the road, the through the fields. I went up the right fork a little bit until I could see the end of the mapped green vegetation. From there I mostly went straight and spiked it.

40-47 - After crossing the trail and stream, vegetation pushed me left and right but I was able to count the reentrants off to my right. When I got close to the correct reentrant, I angled left and uip to see the top of it, then came down it. I saw the control when I paused but running to it I lost it again. I stopped just beyond it and saw it hanging on a tree bow that partly obscured it from higher up the reentrant.

47-33 - I cut through the green bits, finding ways that were not bad. Hitting the trail, I decided it made sense to stay on the trails. The verge at the edges of the semi-open areas looked messy. There was even some dead brush along side of the trail that looked like it had been moved there after the big storm. I left from a bend, arriving between reentrants but not seeing the control. I interpreted correctly that the one to the left was too deep to be the one with the control.

33-804 - My initial thought was to use the trail but then I saw how much the trail descended. I crossed the reentrant system and got to the ridge. Since the higher parts of the ridge looked to have both mapped and unmapped deadfall, I went to the right where it was much clearer. After crossing a side reentrant I went back up to spike the control.

804-36 - I angled down to the trail, cut left at the end of the ridge on my left, used the next trail for a little way, then cut across and up the next ridge to the control.

36-F - I tried to keep running the whole way. There was less deadfall and the climb was gradual enough. I did have to stop briefly in places. After passing the amphitheater, I dropped to the trail. I had to run through the set of tents that an extended southeast Asian family was setting up, since they were putting up one tent on the trail. I was first to finish.

I'd mowed the lawn and done some yardwork before I went out to run. I went from Carderock, MD, on the C&O Canal Towpath to Mile Marker 12 and back. I was surprised not to feel right knee pain starting out. Running felt a little awkward and forced since I hadn't run other than when orienteering, for a long time. However, I ran with the least pain in a long while--getting my legs stronger from bicycling seemed to have helped (though it contributed to less fluid motion for running). It was warm and humid outside. I hadn't ridden my bicycle because a storm had been approaching (it never materialized where I was).. Initially almost no one was around on the towpath. I'd almost done 2 miles and for people, I'd seen only an older couple looking at an overgrown part of the canal near Carderock. Where the water was wider a red-winged blackbird was hopping on a cattail, geese were moving single file through heavy duckweed and some were walking on the towpath; and a Great Blue Heron lifted off the canal edge as I ran past. It was all very summery since I'd been there last.
