Bicycling (Tandem) 1:31:51 [3] 10.35 mi (8:52 / mi) +136m 8:32 / mi

San Francisco, CA. Cycling with Samantha on a hybrid tandem between Marina Green Dr. and the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge. We had a side trip out and back to a point under the south side of the bridge too. This was kind of crazy with a mix of experienced and inexperienced cyclists on the noisy, narrow, and windy bridge. There were no accidents that we’d seen, but there easily could have been. The views were good but limited to the west side.

Hiking (Trail) 1:24:20 [3] 3.02 mi (27:56 / mi) +44m 26:43 / mi

Muir Woods National Monument, CA. I did a lot of stopping to do photography. We went 2 bridges out. On the way back, Max and I walked the high trail back. I would have liked to get up to the Dipsea Trail like I had on previous visits but that was too much for this already busy day.

Hiking 1:22:57 [3] 1.48 mi (56:03 / mi) +103m 46:07 / mi
(injured)

San Francisco, CA. Hiking from El Camino Del Mar to Mile Rock Beach and back. I'd also tried to see the Labyrinth but it seems to have been covered up with sand. This was an easy hike but Samantha had trouble with it. Max and I balanced rocks, which is a common activity there. There were lots of rocks on the beach and in the water. Seals and waterfowl were just off shore. It was overcast. Earlier this morning we'd seen the Fort Mason and the Palace of Fine Arts.

Hiking (Street & Trail) 35:00 [3] 1.25 mi (28:00 / mi) +35m 25:45 / mi

Lands End, San Francisco, CA. After hiking Mile Rock Beach, we ate lunch and drove over to the Lands End Visitor Center. We had planned to see the Sutro Baths but didn't feel like walking Samantha down there and back. Besides we could see them pretty well from the parking lot, and there wasn't a lot of ruin left to see. We did walk around onto the Coastal Trail and to an overlook. This was the same trail that we'd hiked on a short way, getting to/from Mile Rock Beach. In fact, the overlook was less than half a mile from Mile Rock Beach.

Golden Gate Park, CA. Hiking from Stow Lake Boathouse up to Strawberry Hill and looping back. This was a nice and somewhat quiet hike. There wasn't much at the top of Strawberry Hill. The fun is in the journey getting there. Before this we stopped to see the Dutch Windmills.

We had a little excitement when eating lunch. I had my back to the open entrance—no door. Behind me a homeless man sat down. Unbeknownst to me while talking with my family, the homeless guy got real close. When he walked away quickly my son Max mentioned that he walked away with a bag. I looked below and didn’t see my camera backpack. I ran out the Super Duper restaurant while Max came behind me. I yelled back which way and Peggy said to the right. The homeless guy had a limp and I caught him him quickly. He didn’t have the bag but probably hearing us coming, he’d set it down at the edge of the outdoor eating area. I made sure he hadn’t pulled anything out by getting the homeless guy to pull out stuff from his hoodie pocket. Max got the bag and after opening it, I could see the lenses, indicating that that all was there. This all happened so quickly. I yelled at the guy and he never admitted to picking up the bag when it was clear he had. I didn’t call the police but would have if there had been any resistance. I’d just spent a bundle replacing my old camera body and getting a new lens. The homeless guy disappeared soon after. Maybe there was an accomplice who would have picked up the bag if we hadn’t noticed when we had.

The rest of the day before and after was fun. We climbed some good city hills and Samantha did much better than we expected she would.

Hiking (Street and Trail) 45:00 [3]

San Francisco, CA. From Northpoint Rd. near Fisherman’s Warf to Ghirarelli Square and back. We wandered a bit and settled on pizza and pasta. We got some views of tall sailing ships and parts of Fort Mason.

Hiking (Street and Trail) 1:00:00 [3] 1.25 mi (48:00 / mi)

San Francisco, CA. After flying into San Jose with my family we drove up, to San Francisco. From near Taylor St. and Northpoint St. We walked along the Embarcadero street to Pier 39 for dinner. Dinner was nice. We got foggy views of Alcatraz Island and saw a group of seals hanging out o. A dock just below us. I practiced photography and refamiliarized myself with settings on my new camera.

Orienteering (Foot) 1:39:55 [3] 6.8 km (14:42 / km) +735m 9:32 / km
slept:6.5 weight:194.6lbs (injured)

Summer Short Series at Fountainhead Regional Park, VA. Matt Smith setup a relocation exercise on the Fountainhead West map. We started at Wolf Run Shoals Rd. This was Matt's first time setting courses. He did pretty well though I believe he calculated the climb incorrectly and at least 2 controls were misplaced. The long course was supposed to be about 300m but my GPS indicated 735m. I moved okay, but on climbs, my left ham string was forcing me to slow down. I hit most controls well, but missed on the first relocation control. We had to cross an area where the map was whited-out. The control was shown in a small map island. Since the control circle covered it partly, I didn't realize that the trail was a catching feature. I went past it pretty far, but turned around and hit it. It was not very hot; clouds kept it cool enough (it rained at home in MD) but it was humid. I took a few minutes to relieve myself going towards 11 or 12. I was feeling pretty badly towards the end. I'm just not very much in-shape. We had a nice pizza dinner sitting outside afterwards. Joe Barrett told us about the WOC.

From Northfield Rd., the Jefferson St. trail to Glenwood Rd., to Irvington Ave., to Roosevelt St., to Folkstone St./Ewing Dr., to Heampstead St., to the Madison St., trail to Jefferson St., to Northfield Rd. Samantha and I took a walk after dinner. Samantha needed a couple of breaks but the weather was darn good for this time of year. The humidity was low and the temperature was nice.

In Rock Creek Park, at the Washington, D.C./Maryland border. I ran the Valley Trail to Beech Dr., turned south to the Pinehurst Trail, turned right quickly to cross the Pinehurst Branch on an unnamed but still maintained trail, eventually got to the Western Ridge Trail, and took that back to the border. Conditions were good. It was 80 F, low humidity, and dry. I paced myself. After the climb about a mile out, my left hamstring was feeling pretty sore again. Further along it mostly hurt when going uphill. I slowed down a bunch when this happened. The good news was that I finished without incident, and the my right knee was doing pretty well. The anti-inflammatory prescription for my right knee seemed to clear things up quickly. My left knee gave more woe than my right did, and my left knee wasn't bad.

Cabin John Regional Park, MD. It was 91 F at home when I thought about running, so I headed to the forest where it was 87 F. From the Tennis Center parking lot, I took mostly the Cabin John Trail along the creek and power lines northward to the trailhead near the dog park and train parking lot; then I came back. The trail had a few wet spots. I was about 2 minutes slower than in May, but back then it was in the 60s F. My left calf and hamstring were feeling sore near the end of the run.

Running (Trail) 42:18 [3] 3.85 mi (10:59 / mi) +58m 10:30 / mi
slept:6.5 weight:194.2lbs (injured)

Starting from the C&O Canal Lock 10, I went a short way north on the towpath, turned left on a side trail to run along the river (near Plummer Island), returned to the towpath, went north under the Capital Beltway (where the new bridge is being planned to be built), turned left again at the Billygoat C Trail, got back on the towpath at Carderrock, then went all the way back to Lock 10. It was much cooler today; in the 70s F when running. The trails were sometimes overgrown, especially inside the beltway where I hadn't run previously. I picked-up the pace a little on the towpath returning.

From Northfield Rd., to Custer Rd., to Lambeth Rd., to Overhill Rd., to York Ln., to Hampden Ln., to Charlcotte Rd., to Northfield Rd. My older sister and mom had come over for my sister's birthday. I spent a while getting her setup with phone and Internet accounts. After they left, Samantha and I went for a walk. Samantha was easily out of breath. The temperatures were in the low 80s F.

Cabin John Regional Park, MD. From the Tennis Center parking lot, I went past the Locust Grove Nature Center and picnic area, did a small loop as I was figuring out how to get onto the right trail, and eventually ran along the creek until just before the power lines. I returned along the creek to the parking lot. This was my first try at non-orienteering running in a long time. My orthopedist said I could do it so I was giving it a try. My knee hurt a little starting out but it wasn't bad. It was hilly and rocky/rooty initially so I was slow. The temperature was about 90 F but in the forest it was probably a little cooler. I didn't push. I'm glad I was able to run again.

Serpentine Barrens Conservation Park, MD. I finally got around to picking-up the remaining controls that I'd set out last weekend. However, I got them while following the line-o route that I'd setup. There were times when I was off-line but I got back on. The root stocks all seemed smaller than I recalled so I wasn't always sure which ones were mapped. I had setup Usynligo for the course and tested it out. The start didn't register though it said I was within 18m. I figured it was just error from the GPS. The happy song did sing out on most of the actual control locations but not all of them (4 of 6).

Earlier in the day I'd visited an orthopedist and got x-rays taken of my right knee. The news was encouraging; the doctor thought I was experiencing Quadricep Tendonitis. He gave me a prescription to try and didn't expect that any surgery would be needed. This was encouraging. I had mostly jogged through the course and didn't feel too bad. The soft ground helped.

From Northfield Rd., to Custer Rd., to Maple Ridge Rd., to Old Georgetown Rd., to Battery Ln. to Woodmont Ave., to Jones Bridge Rd., to Beach Dr. to Garrett Park Rd., to the Waverly Trail to Waverly Ave., to Strathmore Ave., to Rockville Pike., to Tuckerman Ln. to Grosvenor Pl. to Grosvenor Rd., to Old Georgetown Rd., to Lone Oak Dr., to Fernwood Rd. to Bradley Blvd., to Huntington Pkwy., to Northfield Rd. Thunderstorms looked like they would keep me from riding after work but there was still time leaving right after dinner. It's one advantage to cycling rather than running. The sun was setting just as I got home--running has the advantage over cycling of sunset not really mattering much. It was much cooler cycling after the cool front with no rain, came through.

From Northfield Rd., to Bradley Blvd., to Seven Locks Rd., to Democracy Blvd., to Falls Rd., to Tuckerman Ln. to Old Georgetown Rd., to Huntington Pkwy. to Custer Rd., to Northfield Rd. It was around 90 F again. The start of this ride through the first mile was downhill. That and some probable tailwinds got me on a good pace. I slowed hitting the hills but was able to return to a good pace each time. On Tuckerman Ln. I saw a peloton going the other direction. I eventually got passed by a guy who caught me at a light. I got ahead of him for a while but he pulled away on the long climb--I'm just not in shape for that yet and haven't been training enough. My left calf started to cramp but got better after slowing down a while. Being home to watch Samantha, and recent thunderstorms have made it hard to find time to workout. This was a good route for winds coming from the south.

From Northfield Rd., to Custer Rd., to Maple Ridge Rd., to Old Georgetown Rd., to Battery Ln., to Woodmont Ave., to Rockville Pike, to Jones Bridge Rd., to Beach Dr./Rock Creek Pkwy., to Water St., in Georgetown, to the Capital Crescent Trail., to Falls Rd., to Glenbrook Rd., to Wilson Ln., to Custer Ln., to Northfield Rd. I didn't have a lot of time but went ahead with a plan to loop through DC. It'd been a long time since I'd done this even though about half of it was my regular commute in the past. It was in the 90s F but it didn't feel that bad cycling. Compared to running it was cool and things went by fast. I pushed at times and was feeling it when I turned the corner in Georgetown. I saw some road vendors but didn't stop. Going up the long railroad grade didn't feel particularly hard but it wore on me. I needed to slow to feel safe.
I kept a modest pace but definitely wasn't used to riding this far in the heat. I got home with just enough time to shower and get Samantha to our first theater movie since the pandemic social distancing in March of 2020.
At home I drank a lot of water and cooled in the shower. Once I got to the movie theater, I put my legs up on my reclining chair, and kept drinking (ice tea) and enjoying the A/C. Nice.

Serpentine Barrens Conservation Park. I setup 16 controls for Summer Short Series (SSS) Line-O training. The training was difficult but people seemed to learn from it. No one completed the courses. Most of the group went to eat together. We got dinner in the Fallsgrove Shopping Center and at in the park to the east of it. People hung around talking for a while enjoying the evening and more socialization which hasn't been that fluid for a long time.

I went out after dinner to and was happy to get a short ride in. There were a lot of gnats on the CCT and a fallen tree blocked the Little Falls Trail. I felt a bit full while riding. Like everyday I've ridden, my right knee starts out hurting but gets better unless I go up a steep climb. Fortunately there were no steep climbs on this route.

From the intersection of Elmhirst Ln. and Elmhirst Dr., to Elmhirst Pkwy. to the Elmhirst Trail, to Cedar Ln., to Beach Dr., northward a bit short of Franklin St., then back. Peggy and I were getting Samantha reacquainted with cycling. She'd outgrown her old bicycle and so has Max, so Samantha had Max's bike to ride. It was not a strong outing. Samantha struggled with the bike some but more with cycling in general. She rode into a parked car the first time I let her go (I was trying to catch-up). She used to ride much better. To her credit, she allowed herself to be coaxed back onto the bike. She had a few other mishaps such as running off the closed road and just stopping out of the blue. Each time, we were able to get her restarted again after a break. This was basically out and back and Samantha rode much better on the way back.

After Peggy drove herself and Samantha home, I got a nice workout in. I was thinking to recreate a route I did last summer but I went further to round the steep hill past the Mormon Temple entrance. It was warm and it was still breezy.

Rd., to Northfield. Rd. I just put together a little ride to get a workout in for today. There were other cyclists and some runners out on this warm but breezy holiday. It felt like every direction that I went in was into the wind.

After the ride, Max, Samantha and I went to my mom's house. Peggy was sick so she stayed home. Max and I fixed my mom's backyard gate, replacing boards and the hinges. The end result was good. After that we grilled burgers and dogs, and set off fireworks. That was possible because it's allowed in Virginia.

Orienteering (Foot) 30:53 [2] *** 2.4 km (12:52 / km) +44m 11:47 / km
spiked:7/7c (injured)

Summer Short Series at Arundel HS, Odenton, MD. Ted Good setup training to help people make the right choices between trail and off trail navigation. He recommended we start out on a contours only course. The map for that had all trails removed. Most of the forest was open but there were areas where it was more efficient to go around than to plow through. I walked about 90-95% of the way. In doing so, I wasn't that far behind others who'd run and walked. Sometimes I'd pass them. I drifted left and right a little at times but was going slow enough to use other features to adjust.

Orienteering (Foot) 29:08 [2] *** 2.4 km (12:08 / km) +58m 10:49 / km
spiked:7/7c slept:7.0 (injured)

Summer Short Series at Arundel HS, Odenton, MD. On this course, the map was basically trails only; i.e., no contours. I cut between trails regularly. Sometimes I used similar routes as I had on the no trails course, but other times, I used the trails more to get to better attack points or not risk confusing which trail I'd hit when cutting across between trails. It helped a little to just recall where the controls I'd visited earlier were, but not always. I jogged a little more on this course than the first one. I decided not to temp fate any more and didn't go out for a 3rd course.

Afterwards we ate dinner as a group with takeout food in the parking lot in front of a Goodwill store. A strong rain came minutes after getting to the area, so several of us went inside a Mexican restaurant and ordered. The rain stopped but the proprietors coaxed us to their tent while waiting for food. Ultimately we left. After eating and chatting, we extended the fun by getting ice creams and shakes.

From Northfield Rd., to the Capital Crescent Trail, to the Little Falls Trail, to the MacArthur Blvd., trail, to MacArthur Blvd., to Brickyard Rd., to Horseshoe Rd., to Brickyard Rd., to Falls Rd., to Oaklyn Dr./Bradley Blvd., to Huntington Pkwy., to Northfield Rd. Stopping work a little early, but not as early as allowed, I had time to bicycle before dinner. For a change I headed toward DC. I made up the route along the way but intended this to be shorter. On MacArthur Blvd., I couldn't recall which right turn to take so I missed turning on Eggert Dr. I was expecting to see Persimmon Tree Rd., but that intersection was inside the beltway. I knew Brickyard Rd. had some hills but had forgotten how steep it was. My right knee hurt starting out on both the up and downstroke but mostly got better until I climbed Brickyard Rd. I made it up without stopping by compensating with my left leg some. Exploring Horseshoe Rd., didn't get me the shortcut that I was hoping for but it was a nice quiet shady road to ride on. I never pushed very hard on this ride except for the climb up Brickyard Rd.
