Orienteering (Course Setting) 31:57 [3] 1.49 mi (21:27 / mi) +32m 20:07 / mi
slept:5.5 weight:190.5lbs

QOC at Great Falls, MD. From Falls Rd., I set out more water and cups at a stop in the middle of the park. I carried 3 gallons—yesterday I had carried 3 in a backpack and two in my hands with controls and 3 control stands. That was too much for my worn back. My back was hurting this morning. It loosened up on this outing. The rain had paused when I got started but had started again as I was out. I jogged back in rain gear and my backpack but was otherwise with a light load.

Orienteering (Course Setting) 41:37 [3] 1.26 mi (33:02 / mi) +54m 29:10 / mi
spiked:4/4c

QOC at Great Falls, MD. I setup the start, 2 finishes, streamers to the start, and one control that was just off the towpath. Once again, I saw my neighbor Ed, from across the street.
9 AM

Running (Trail) 25:36 [3] 2.0 mi (12:48 / mi) +44m 11:59 / mi
spiked:1/1c

QOC at Great Falls, MD. After consulting with Greg Lennon, whom coordinated with the park, I ran out to adjust placement of one control that the park had told us to place across a small stream. I moved it back to a rootstock next to the trail so that the beginners would not have to cross. . We think there was erroneous communication of a GPS coordinate. Hopefully I got the real location the park wanted the control placed at. I jogged slowly with my rain gear on.

Orienteering (Course Setting) 1:18:33 [2] 2.63 mi (29:52 / mi) +143m 25:33 / mi

QOC at Great Falls, MD. Though I jogged at times, most of this was walking off trail to see and take pictures of competitors. It was fun as a course setter to see how different people executed their navigation. A larger ROTC teem went out in groups and individually and though enthusiastic, most looked seriously perplexed and challenged. I walked along calmly on a trail with them and other orienteers paralleling above me. I didn’t have a map and had the benefit of experience in knowing where to go but even stopping to watch I was getting to controls quicker than half of the people I saw. In the most technical area with a butterfly loop, I managed to distract Peggy into a mistake while cheering for her. I saw many people at different places. The rain had stopped and it was sunny and warm. I walked about in shorts with no gaiters.

Orienteering (Control Pickup) 1:14:51 [3] 2.83 mi (26:27 / mi) +100m 23:51 / mi
spiked:9/9c

QOC at Great Falls, MD. Control pickup. I collected 9 from middle of the map. One was a water control. I’d set out 8 gallons there. I was only able to carry 1 back and had to dump 2. I also had 3 control stands to carry. On the first control, after 3pm I saw 3 or 4 people still trying to finish their intermediate course. I had a long way to walk back with a full load and my arms were tired.

Orienteering (Course Setting) 2:44:57 [3] 5.28 mi (31:15 / mi) +215m 27:44 / mi
spiked:19/19c slept:5.0 weight:191lbs

Great_Falls, MD. From Falls Rd. I finally got going on setting out controls. It took longer than planned in the morning to sort and pack the controls in the order that I was going to place them. I also had to stop at the grocery store for water. Setting some of the controls was slow since the park moved previously planned locations away from mapped features. I had to triangulate for some. I used 3 control stands across this set. The woods had improved much since I last saw them. The stilt grasses were obscuring a lot less since they were dying off.

Orienteering 1:09:14 [3] 2.34 mi (29:35 / mi) +45m 27:56 / mi
spiked:5/5c

Great Falls, MD. From Falls Rd. I set out 2 water stops and 5 controls. It was 12 gallons altogether. A trip with 3 in a backpack, two in hand, control stands and controls was too much. Doing that water stop required me to makean least 2 trips alone since I needed at least 8 gallons. I managed to pull it off with tired arms. It was awkward since some of the stuff had to be carried high and some away from my body. I used. To be able to park closer at the VFW, but now they have chains and signs there making even temporary short term parking risky. I realized on one of the controls that I didn’t update the map—a boulder had gotten covered by deadfall. I had been rushing past this several times on previous outings but I was always rushed with it getting dark when I was there. I was able to put the control stand next to the boulder.
2 PM

Orienteering (Course Setting) 2:08:23 [3] 4.28 mi (30:00 / mi) +114m 27:42 / mi
spiked:15/15c

Great Falls, MD. From Falls Rd., I set out the last set for the day. Most of these were in the northern part of the areas we are allowed to orienteering in. I knew I’d have to pickup the pace to finish before dark. I would have liked to have done more map updates there. Going off memory near the end, I did one of these out of the order that I’d planned. Checking my plan kept me from making a mistake.

Bicycling (Commute) 18:06 [3] 4.23 mi (4:17 / mi) +50m 4:08 / mi
slept:6.0 weight:191lbs

From Northfield Rd., to the Bethesda Metro Station. Along the way I realized I'd forgotten my wallet but I figured I could do without it for a day. When I got to the bottom of the long escalator just before the gates, I realized I'd need my wallet to use the station. Back and forth I went again. Though it was in the upper 40s and lower 50s F, I had my unzipped jacket on and got sweaty.

Washintgon, D.C. I repeated an extended version of what I've call the Memorial Tour from my office. I ran the same version a little over a week ago and this time I was all of 1 second faster (From 12th St., SW and Independence Ave. SW, to Main Ave. SW., to Ohio Dr., past the Tidal Basin, and Jefferson Memorial, over 14th St. Bridge to the Mt. Vernon Trail, around Lady Bird Johnson Memorial looping under the George Washington Pkwy., to the footbridge over the Boundary Channel into Virginia, along the North Pentagon Parking lot, to the trail along S. Washington Blvd., to the Mount Vernon Trail, to Memorial Bridge, clockwise more than half way around the Lincoln Memorial Circle. to the Reflecting Pool, past the World War II Memorial., along Independence Ave. past the Washington Monument, to 12th St.)! It was again around 63 F and very comfortable. There were lots of cyclists on the 14th St. Bridge. I thought I might run more slowly today since my quads hurt so much on my run yesterday and I had a bad calf cramp that evening which was still sore all day today. I was getting tired the last 2 miles. I hit the traffic intersections well so I didn't have as many interval-like stop/starts that I did have the previous week.

5 PM

Running (Street & Trail) 55:22 [3] 6.1 mi (9:05 / mi) +76m 8:44 / mi

From Northfield Rd., through Greenwich Park to Old Georgetown Pike, to W. Cedar La. to the Elmhirst Trail, to Cedar La. to the Rock Creek Trail, to Beach Dr. to Grosvenor La. to the Bethesda Trolley Trail, to Old Georgetown Rd. and to Northfield Rd. via Greenwich Park. I don't think I'd done this route the whole year. I'd worked from home all day and was good about knocking off at a reasonable time. The daylight and dry/cool weather is much more motivating that the cloudy cool weather that'd been around much of the month. I had also been working late a lot. I felt I needed a little break after running the Hudson Highlander, but the shorter days seemed to also have been sapping my motivation. I ran okay on this until about 2.5 miles in. I slowed while still on flat ground but the modest climbs really emphasized the soreness in my quadriceps. I was dragging the last mile, and feeling a little cold. I guess I'd de-trained too much because this should have been a fairly easy run.

Washington, D.C. From 12th St., SW and Independence Ave. SW, to Main Ave. SW., to Ohio Dr., past the Tidal Basin, and Jefferson Memorial, over 14th St. Bridge to the Mt. Vernon Trail, to the Gravelly Point Parking lot, back north on the Mt. Vernon Trail to the 14th St. Bridge, to Ohio Dr., SW, to Main Ave., SW., to 15th St., SW., to Independence Ave., SW, to 12th St., SW. I thought I'd try a little different run by crossing the river and going south. Though I'd bicycled here last summer, it's probably been over 2 decades since I ran past Gravelly Point. The trail was really busy with cyclists. One woman runner passed me. I felt like I picked up the pace going back and was feeling better. As I started across the Potomac River heading in, the sun was setting. The bottom was in shadow already and the top was in the sun like a mountain alpen glow. As I ran, I watched the shadow climb and the monument was fully engulphed before I could finish getting across. With some stop/starts at traffic lights, I was able to run harder to the finish like doing intervals. It felt good.

NEOC Olderdash Master's Championships at Gunstock Resort in New Hampshire. This was the warm-up jog to the start of Day 2.

Orienteering race (Foot) 1:04:07 [4] 3.03 mi (21:10 / mi) +264m 16:39 / mi

NEOC Olderdash Master's Championships at Gunstock Resort in New Hampshire. I had a much better run this day.

S-1 - I knew Petr Hartman (DVOA) was starting only 2 minutes behind me and I was eager to go. I ran up the trail debating whether or not to use the woods on leg 2.

1-2 - The woods looked good so I plunged in. Just 15 seconds later I was cursing the decision. Though mapped mostly white, it didn't seem that way to me. The footing was slow for a while where it was open too. I hesitated a little after crossing the trail.

2-3 - Like a fool, I went straight, perhaps a bit panicked about my slow start. I got confused with the marsh and hills on the left seeming larger than expected from the map. Once on the trail, I paused a long time to find the trail intersection that I just ran past. I found it and went into the woods. I was hesitant, not matching up the rock very well since I was a little left. Staying more in the reentrant, Petr appeared ahead and clued me in by his presence to keep going on.

3-4 - I chased Petr, then passed him at the trail. With him on my heels, I plunged in angling up and spiking the spur control - not a hard leg.

4-5 - I ran up and over to the wall, then followed it up. I was a bit perplexed by this leg--a handrail to the top of a knoll and a cliff on the far end of the top was too easy. JJ must have been trying to avoid the trails and something with the other courses.

5-6 - Petr was still close behind me as I left #5. I aimed off a bit to the left, hit, never saw the trail going down but was probably on it; then on the big trail I ran to the field. From there I used the creek as a handrail.

6-7 - Petr was still not far back. I contoured left to avoid negative terrain and climbed angling toward the saddle next. I hit some green saplings that were either unmapped or the light green mapped near another trail that I never saw. It was like the thick saplings on the Day 1 course toward leg 5. I went around it to the left. I must have gotten sloppy climbing more straight up since at the top I ended going up a really steep part and came out in a rough open area. I crossed that to a stone wall and was sure then that I'd gotten too high. I hit the next open area and ran downward. I went back in the woods near the glade but should have dropped more first. I hung onto the reentrant left of the control for a while and started wondering if I passed the control. I could see Stephan coming down the hill quickly. We both cut over though Stephan was moving more quickly and directly. He got there ahead of me.

7-8 - I went straight, dropping down where the running was better. I matched up the ski trail crossings okay but was really happy to leave the last one to make a short direct successful attack from the field edge.

8-9 - I cut over on bearing and down the next ski trail more to the right to get near the bottom of the spur. I cut in a little early to be above the control, but spiked it.

9-10 - I went a little left of straight to avoid rocks and steep descent. The control at the bottom of 2 ski trails was easy.

10-11 - I started running faster on the downhill and a little more carefree. Others were running the same direction and elephant trails were starting to form. Again with the control at the bottom of 2 ski trails it was a little too easy.

11-12 - I left the control to the left and had to cut back to the right. I accelerated to make up for it, by going to the bottom and then over. Others ahead gave me motivation to catch up.

12-F - I pushed it in but lost a little time punching.

It was around 63 F and very comfortable. There were lots of cyclists out. The Memorial Bridge was still being worked on with the south side of it closed off from auto and foot traffic. I was surprised at my pace and chalk it up to not having done much training lately--being well rested.

Orienteering race (Foot) 1:20:54 [4] 7.8 km (10:22 / km) +200m 9:12 / km

QOC: Gunston Hall, VA. I was running pretty well. I spiked the first several controls. On a longer leg (#6), I thought I'd made a bad choice since it was longer but turned out to be greener/slower than expected. That control seemed to be mis-hung one stream over. Moving on, I went past the start and down to trails. Once across the creek on flatter ground, I headed off on a bearing anticpating seeing a hill ahead. I saw one to my left which made me think I had drifted--it was the wrong hill (a little too early and left) but I never realized it. I'd gotten distracted by others there and must not haved matched the code to #7; I may have jsut checked to see if it were on my course and it was at a later point. After mis-punching there, I went on. Joe Barret came through and I got confused since he and I were going slightly different ways. I went out toward the trail, then back in right away. I ended up between #8 and #9 and foolishly I cut right to #9. I worked my way back to #8, and then #9 again. Going to #10 the green was thicker than expected. Once across it and on flat ground, I was not sure where I'd find the control. I read the terrain and left a woman looking for it too; I hit it quickly. There was more unexpected green going to #11 (where I'd punched before and thought I was at #7). I hit the rest of the controls okay. I got the distinct feeling that I was running faster than I could read the map. The green seemed to make that worse. It was disappointing to end with a mispunch but I got a decent workout. Note that I'd also fumbled on starting my GPS watch.

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. to 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I knew it'd be warm later today, and since I didn't ride yesterday, I decided to do that today. I moved normally getting to the Bradley Blvd. but with other cyclists around I picked up the pace. I had been telling myself not to ride hard today but on the CCT I caught one who'd been slower getting around other cyclists and walkers. The guy was much stronger than me as he took off. I hung on, almost losing him a few times as we slowed and sped up to pass others. Eventually there were others behind me. I was in Georgetown in under 23 minutes which is a good pace. The guy I'd been following slowed and so did I. Others didn't so much but we caught some of them before breaking up at the end of Georgetown. I road much more calmly afterward. This was probably my fastest ride into work this year.

I ran up to Custer Rd., to Wilson La., to Exeter Rd. to Glenbrook Rd. to the Bethesda Trolley Trail, to the NIH grounds, to Maple Ridge Rd. to Georgetown Pike, to Huntington Pkwy., to Custer Rd. to Northfield Rd. Having started the day off poorly by waking up late, I didn't bicycle as planned. I also worked late and brought dinner home so I didn't get out until late. Resting more this week, I felt better walking around and the initial steps on the run were similar, but very soon on the hill starting out I was out of breath. The ball of my left foot hurt. After about half a mile, picked up the pace slowly and felt more competent running, but I never felt strong. It was 75 F and humid.
