Wheaton Regional Park, MD. I finished off field checking the small new area, then went through Brookside Gardens. There is a maintenance area with woods surrounding it. That area is marked off-limits and the woods are almost uniformly horrible. There are runners who pass through the fenced-in gardens. The gardens would be great for a sprint but really one would need to stay on trails wherever it isn't open. It'd be distracting too, to other patrons for a race to pass through the formal areas. At one point, I was mapping an area in a slightly forested area where came across a trio doing a photo shoot. There was mini photography tent like the old dark rooms for plate based photography. That turned out to be a changing booth for what appeared to be a model. The Latino model was in a wedding gown and came out. Though she had on a full skirt, she had only a bra on top and she may have been pregnant. They did take a few pictures before I wandered elsewhere. There is one hill in the gardens with intricate trails and placed boulders that could be good for some mostly mental training.

Wheaton Regional Park, MD. I continued field checking some new areas of the park, as well as making updates. This was in the northwestern areas. I was able to get into Brookside Gardens a little. I was trying to see what the woods around the maintenance area were like--they were worse than I'd hoped for, and it was questionable whether they could be used, even if they weren't so unpleasant. It might be that the woods are bad because a deer fence keeps the deer out. Though the trees are not young, the forest being on the sunny side of a hill could add to that. I did unexpectedly find a ride, and the remnants of some old trails.

Orienteering (Field Checking) 2:11:07 [3] 2.87 mi (45:41 / mi) +99m 41:17 / mi

Wheaton Regional Park, MD. Having added LiDAR based contours, I mapped areas in the northwest part of the park. Most of the area was somewhat junk, as one would expect from ground where there has been a lot of human presence there, passing through, or just being nearby. However, there was a small but very nice section with parallel ditches bordering on gullies. The woods there were a mix of open to light green--just enough green to keep it from being too easy.

Running (Street & Trail) 44:44 [3] 4.53 mi (9:53 / mi) +66m 9:27 / mi
(injured)

Washington, D.C. I did another variation of the loop I call the Memorial Tour. From 12th & Independence Ave., SW, to Lincoln Memorial Circle via the Reflecting Pool, across Memorial Bridge to the Mt. Vernon Trail, to the 14th St. Bridge,. to Main Ave. to 15th St., SW, to Independence Ave. SW., to 12th St., SW. When I had left work to run this, it seemed like there was hardly anyone left in the building; I guess people were in a hurry with it being Friday, and a high potential of there being a government shutdown may have zapped enthusiasm. Protesters unrelated to the threat of a shutdown, who were on The Mall earlier, were walking about as tourist do. I felt a but awkward in my right leg not long after starting out. It seemed like something was slightly off and that a bit of stretching might undo it. I went on but at about the 1 mile point, I felt an old familiar pain in my right ankle. This hadn't happened it a long time but it was a precursor to my back pains a few years back--tendons are connected so I think I felt it there first. It scares me a bit but the past history and having not done much training lately kept me going. It was fairly minor at that point and this has sometimes gone away as I've gotten more warmed-up. About half-way cross Memorial Bridge, with a change in slope, one step gave me a sharper pain. I slowed a lot but was thinking I was almost half way and should just go on. The same thing repeated 2 more times with the worst being on the 14th St. Bridge, again in the middle of it. I had to walk a while after that one, but I got going again. I was shuffling along not much faster than walking. I was passing a few people who were walking but not by a lot. Other than getting injured, the evening was nice, in the 40s for a change. It was neat seeing the Potomac River and Tidal Basin with broken sheets and blocks of ice practically the whole way across.

Bicycling (Commute) 7:38 [2] 1.3 mi (5:52 / mi) +22m 5:35 / mi
(injured)

From the Bethesda Metro Station to Northfield Rd. With my ankle bothering me and carrying 2 backpacks, I rode slowly. I also had my coat strapped to one backpack so while wearing 2, one pushed my head down with a little pressure on my neck.

From Northfield Rd., through Greenwich Park to Old Georgetown Pike, to W. Cedar La. to Rockville Pike, to the Bethesda Trolley Trail, to Maple Ridge Rd., to Old Georgetown Rd., to Huntington Pkwy., to Custer Rd., to Northfield Rd. Along Rockville Pike, there was construction for a pedestrian tunnel to the Medical Center Metro Station that closed the sidewalk. I detoured by the station to get around it. It was in the 20s F starting out, sunny, but with light steady winds from the NW. I felt like I was slowing down after a mile. I would have preferred a longer forest run but got I'd things done around the house earlier. An early dinner with friends Bob and Ben, in Bethesda followed.

Seneca State Park, MD. From Riffeford Rd., I went to 10 locations which Michael Dickey identified for map updates. This park seems to change quite a bit from year to year. This year there was a trail location, and the sewer line work in the Long Draught stream valley, which I'd mapped last year, is gone. So far at least, the beavers haven't changed things too much. I did find a few things on my own including a few boulders; I actually found some of them while setting out controls last year. With winter at its peak, the park is about as runnable as it gets. Only a heavy snow that melts would help mash down stuff more. I did run a bit from location to location. With it being in the 20s F and there being a wind, I had my winter coat on.

It'd been a while since I'd gone field checking and I was a bit out of practice. Getting ready, one of my printed sheets fell behind my printer so I didn't have it in the field--overlap with other pages, drawing what I saw, and memory helped. With gloves on, I kept dropping and then having to go back to find my pencil. I even forgot that I'd brought eye glasses so I started out without them. All of that was frustrating but I got into the swing of things eventually, covering a lot of ground in a relatively short time for field checking work.

From 12th & Independence Ave. SW, I ran down Independence Ave., to the Martin Luther King memorial, rounded the Tidal Basin, via the Roosevelt Memorial and along the water past the Jefferson Memorial. Taking Main Ave., I finished up along 12th St. I felt slow and sluggish from not having run much. I looked at a guy running across the street (Independence Ave.) and he looked like he was going slowly, only he was slowly passing me.

Great Seneca Stream Valley Park, MD. From Watkins Mill Rd., I went north on the Greenway Trail. I'd been wanting to do some trail running this long weekend but was too busy earlier. I picked the coldest day in a year. It was 20 F with a 9 mph wind when I started (it'd been 9 F this morning). The temperature was fine and at one point, I thought I was overdressed. After starting out, soon after the stream crossing, I cut left (west) on side trail. I thought I was taking one that I'd been on before, which would loop along the side of the ridge, and come back to the trail. However, I'd gotten on a newer trail; one that mountain bikers had made. It was intermittent but fairly visible from a 1/4 inch layer of snow over it (that little bit of snow softened the hard frozen ground). I set out from there to run just about all of the trails on the ridge. Eventually, I went on toward Brink Rd. doing some side trails along the way too. After crossing Brink Rd. on the main Seneca Greenway Trail, I got on another side trail. This one went about 1.5 miles up Goshen Branch Stream Valley. It was flat and through scattered rough open terrain. I turned around at Huntsman Rd., but went off on some side trails there too. Coming back, I branched off on the ridges near Watkins Mill Rd., to get more trails that I knew I'd missed earlier. The terrain in the forest there is very open and nice. If I can get some good LiDAR, I'll probably make a small map of the area. Though the bicycle trails get to a lot of them, there are enough nice features in the area that would be good for training. A larger adjacent area, North Germantown Greenway Stream Valley Park is across the Great Seneca Creek, but looks promising for potential mapping.
