Bicycling (Trail) 32:00 [3]
slept:7.5

Acadia National Park, ME. From Eagle Creek to Jordon Pond House on the carriage roads. I was on a rented mountain bike with a tag-along bike attached for Towing Samantha. Max and Peggy road mountain bikes too. The weather was great. The trails were shady but going uphill seemed to take more work than it should of. We stopped for lunch at Jordan Pond House, overlooking Jordon Pond.

Bicycling (Trail) 58:00 [3] 7.0 mi (8:17 / mi)

Acadia National Park, ME. From Jordon Pond House, on the carriage roads to Eagle Lake. We took a wrong turn leaving our lunch spot and got down to intersection 25. We had to ride back uphill to get back on track. The way back was easier with less climb and a tailwind along Eagle Lake. Samantha pushed hard whenever we rode downhill. The carriage roads were gravel covered but in great shape with turns that weren't too sharp for me to take without braking. It was all nice and pretty. We'd caught the shuttle bus going and returning.
5 PM

Hiking (Trail) 20:00 [3]

Acadia National Park, ME. From the Schooner Trailhead we went to Dory Point and along the shore to an old home ruin. The shoreline was covered in jagged rock but there were a few tidal pools along the way.

Harold Parker State Park, MA. We camped here the night before and this was the hike to/from the bathroom. I was sandwiched between Max who had an ear ache and couldn't sleep, and Samantha who moved around and rolled into me.

Bicycling (Road) 1:09:56 [3] 19.31 mi (3:37 / mi)
slept:7.0 weight:185lbs

From Bethesda Ave. at the Capital Crescent Trail (CCT), to Dorset Ave., to River Rd., to Goldsboro Rd., to MacArthur Blvd., over the Aqueduct Bridge to Clara Barton Pkwy., to MacArthur Blvd., to Falls Rd., to River Rd., to Bradley Blvd., to Huntington Pkwy., to Northfield Rd., to Custer Rd., to Park St., to Exeter Rd., to Bethesda Ave., to the CCT. I had some car work done so while the work was being done, I went for a ride. This was a fun route with minimal traffic interruptions. It did require going on some busy roads but there were often shoulders. I moved well and tried not to push. It felt hot initially, but not as hot as in the Bahamas, perhaps due to there being less humidity. I rode into the wind going out but the car traffic along side of me blew the wind in my direction enough to make it easier. As I was headed outbound, I could see that there was a thunderstorm directly ahead. Approaching it, the air cooled a lot, and the breeze felt good. Some rain fell on me on Falls Rd., and again on Bradley, as I cut my intended ride short to keep out of the worst of it. There was some lightening falling nearby sometimes. I got ahead of the rain and pulled into home to keep out of it. However, just as I'd gotten my shoes off, I got the message that my car was ready. I rode the last bit back to downtown Bethesda comfortably. It was nice to do some riding other than commuting. It's much more natural and I appreciated not having to carry stuff.

Running (Street & Trail) 18:05 [3] 1.84 mi (9:50 / mi)

Paradise Island, Bahamas. From the Atlantis Resort on Mackey Street to downtown Nassau over the bridge, west along Bay St. to the Sir Sidney Poitier bridge, to Paradise Beach Dr., to Mackey Street, to the Atlantis Resort (Corals Towers). This was the hilliest run I did in the Bahamas. Both bridges rose quickly and high enough for sailing vessels to pass underneath. They were still not quite high enough for the big cruise ships to cross under but they were almost the same height. The views were nice and there was a good breeze to counteract the temperatures in the mid 80s F.

Running (Street & Trail) 24:24 [3] 2.72 mi (8:58 / mi)
slept:7.5

Paradise Island, Bahamas. From the Atlantis Resort on Mackey Street to Paradise Beach Dr. through the tunnel under the Atlantis marina, to the Dolphin Cay area, to the foot trail along the water park and The Reef hotel, to the trail along the ocean, east to the end of the trail at the Beach hotel, past some pools to the convention center, after walking through the convention center, I got onto Casino Dr., to Lakeview Dr., to Paradise Island Dr., to Mackey St. to the Corals hotel, at the Atlantis resort. I started like other days. Less than 1/4 mile out, a coconut fell out of a tree 5-6 feet away from me. As I was running a steady pace down into the tunnel, I heard footsteps behind me. A young woman runner was catching up fast. I moved over for her to pass but as the tunnel bottomed out and I climbed, I pulled away keeping my basic pace. I think I got an earlier start so it was cooler. There were more ups and downs but the hills were smaller than the other day. I was slowing down at the end and I was surprised to learn the distance afterward, because I thought this might have been a shorter run.

Swimming (Pool and Ocean) 1:00:00 [3]

Atlantis Resort, Nassau, Bahamas. swimming in the pools and propelling myself in a tube. We actually spent hours in the pools and in the sun. We spent a good while snorkeling too. We saw a lot more fish this time. The were hanging around a submerged cliff mostly. Nice schools were unafraid of several humans swimming and diving among them. Many were colorful. The colors became clearer when we got close. Even some cuttle fish hanging around near a submerged trash and some grasses, had blue stripes and spots. I was wary of getting close to them from TV episode memories of aggressive Humboldt squid but these were much more placid than the Humboldt. It was interesting to note how the fish I saw seemed to stay in the same spot as I swam away and came back several times.

Running (Street & Trail) 22:37 [3] 2.35 mi (9:37 / mi)
slept:7.0

Paradise Island, Bahamas. From the Atlantis Resort on Mackey Street to Harbour Dr., to Harbour Ridge Dr,, Bayview Dr., to Paradise Island Dr., to Cloister Drive West, back to Paradise Island Dr., to Mackey St., to the Atlantis Resort. It was hot starting out, 88 F. I ran parallel to my run yesterday. It was hillier today. The run on the ridge was nice despite all of the million dollar homes and a few hotels along the way.

Swimming (Pool) 30:00 [3]

Atlantis Resort, Nassau, Bahamas. swimming in the pools and propelling myself in a tube. We actually spent hours in the pools and in the sun.

slept:8.0

Paradise Island, Bahamas. From the Atlantis Resort on Mackey Street to Paradise Island Dr., to the guard gate just before North Shore Terrace, to Garden Dr. to a convenience store, to Paradise Island Dr., to Mackey St. to the Atlantis Resort. It was warm and humid, A day in the sun and some ocean water and some good sleep helped get rid of my cold. I was tired still. After he stop at the store, I ran back Almost all the way with 3 bags of lunch supplies. He run made me feel good afterward. There were some mild but unexpected hills. I didn't get to see much water on his route but it was suburban pleasant. My time is an estimate.

Swimming (Pool) 30:00 [2]

Atlantis Resort, Nassau, Bahamas. swimming in the pools and propelling myself in a tube. We actually spent hours in the pools and in the sun. In the evening, we took a ferry over to the city to see the Straw Market. Samantha got her hair braided for much more than we'd planned to pay. Also, the last ferry left early so we took a taxi back.

Swimming (Pool and Ocean) 30:00 [2]
slept:7.0

Atlantis Resort, Nassau, Bahamas. After petting and kissing a dolphin in the morning, we did some snorkeling in the ocean (we saw a few fish), swimming in the pools, tubing the Lazy and the Rapids rivers, then hit some slides. In the evening we watched cartoons at poolside while the kids spent more time in the water. It was a full and fun day. We all got a bit too much sun. Samantha got the hang of swimming much better than before and she loves the snorkel mask.

Hiking (Trail) 40:00 [3] 1.0 mi (40:01 / mi)
slept:2.0

Atlantis Resort, Nassau, Bahamas. It was raining after we arrived but we walked the complex, stepping outside at times. I admired the ocean view from our hotel window (perhaps lucking into it due to a mishap in our room assignment), which included a view of a shark pool below our window and another pool of baby sting rays that glided along in such playful and graceful formations.

Bicycling (Commute) 39:45 [3] 12.1 mi (3:17 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:183.5lbs (sick)

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I rode alone. It seemed like there was a slight tailwind at times. I was kind of tired and just going through the motions.
6 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 50:00 [3] 13.1 mi (3:49 / mi)
(sick)

From 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C., to Cordell Rd., Bethesda , MD, then to Northfield Rd. I was supposed to meet Peggy and the kids for dinner in Bethesda, but I only just got there as they were leaving. I ended up eating after they left and then going home. I was fairly tired finishing up but I also went around the block to make a drop-off at a neighbor's house.

Bicycling (Commute) 37:30 [3] 12.1 mi (3:06 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:182.5lbs (sick)

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. There were heavy rains last night that left lots of debris. The plus side of it was that it was much cooler - 65 F starting out. Some parts of the trail were covered with leave and twig debris such that it appeared the cyclists who rode before me had created a single-track through it. On fallen branch completely blocked the trail before the MacArthur Blvd. tunnel. People were walking bikes around it. I did pass a lot of other riders. One whom I'd caught just at the trestle bridge, pulled away, then remained about 50m ahead into Georgetown. All-in all, I felt stronger; perhaps from eating more yesterday. There were some brief headwinds riding into the east rounding the Jefferson Memorial again.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 44:00 [3] 11.9 mi (3:42 / mi)
(sick)

From 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C., to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I paced myself. Once again there were some headwinds getting to Georgetown, then traffic getting through Water St. On the CCT, I wasn't so energetic and a young woman on a Lemond followed by a grey haired heavy set man passed me. I mostly kept my pace and eventually caught them. I just stayed behind them until the water fountain at Dalecarlia when they both suddenly stopped. I moved-on at my pace again slowly passing others.

Bicycling (Commute) 39:15 intensity: (37:15 @3) + (2:00 @4) 12.1 mi (3:15 / mi)
slept:6.7 weight:183lbs (sick)

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I was achy getting over the first hill and I moved slowly. I picked-up the pace as I steadily passed a lot of other riders before and on the trail. On the flats, one of those I'd passed passed me back. I hung with him for a while but I was just too weak. I resumed my level of effort and 2 more that I'd passed caught me just before Georgetown. The winds seemed calm but as I rounded the Jefferson Memorial, I felt some headwinds briefly.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 45:03 [3] 11.9 mi (3:47 / mi)
(sick)

From 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C., to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I was tired all day and from the beginning of this ride. My right hamstring and base of the spine had been tight on the right side. There was a headwind but I was moving so slowly that it didn't have much effect. It was also mostly muted by trees on the CCT. I guess my legs are strained by working out more and eating less. I feel like I have almost no power and I'm just slow twitching to get from place to place.

Bicycling (Commute) 39:45 [3] 12.1 mi (3:17 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:182.5lbs (sick)

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I moved okay on this ride but faded about 7 miles in. It was 82 F when I finished, and somewhat humid. I was carrying my laptop. I was passing people at a steady pace but once I hit the flats, one of the guys whom I'd caught and passed took over. I drafted off of him until passing him back in Georgetown. I need to work on my shift adjustment; the new cable that got installed in June appears to have stretched so the chain kept slipping up and down inappropriately. I was often in higher gears than I wanted to be. There was a hint of a headwind along the Kennedy Center and Ohio Dr. I took it easier in those last few miles and felt drained.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 45:00 [3] 11.9 mi (3:47 / mi)
(sick)

From 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C., to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I had been waiting for a thunderstorm to pass before I got outside. However as it was nearing 6pm, I went anyway, so that I wouldn't get locked-in and have to wait a long while for a guard to open the gate. There were a lot of puddles for a while and it was cooler than anticipated. There were few other runners or bicyclist. Even the traffic was on the light side. Light rain fell but started stopping as I neared the Kennedy Center. By the time I got through Georgetown, the sun was poking out and I could see steam rising off of the trail. Two people eventually passed me but I kept pace with one for a few miles, after he got 50m ahead. I was again riding in higher gears than I had wanted but I wasn't getting as much chain skipping as earlier.

We enjoyed riding in the dark. I was hoping to run or ride earlier but I got some things done instead. I'm still kind of weak and was sore from running the day before.

Orienteering ( Foot) 1:04:31 [3] 6.3 km (10:14 / km)
slept:7.3 weight:184.5lbs (sick)

SSS: Patuxent River Park, MD. Amy Louden set a course that was almost trails only. Peggy and I had gotten there late so it was warm when we began. A few others were finishing as we started. I was weak but with the extra sleep, my cold was starting to feel more like it was finally going away. I made one error leaving #2 and starting off down the wrong trail but didn't lose but 30 seconds. I walked a few hills and stopped once to relieve myself. I was weak but plodded along.

Afterward, we took a bit of time to finish off Max's model rocket (using duct tape). We launched in Croom Airport field. The rocket got a little hung up with the launcher, and pulled it up way (bad construction for the sleeves) but the rocket got up in the air and Max was happy. We'll do better next time.

My neck was much better this day.

My neck was stiff during the day and really hurt on the right side when I extended my left arm outward in front of me. I didn't have much time to run but with the neck pain, I felt it better to just stay in.

From the Bethesda Metro Station, to Cordell Ave., then to Northfield Rd. I stopped off to pickup dinner. I also had my laptop so the food dangled from bags that I held. It was hot, in the 90s F.

7 PM

Running (Street & Trail Commute) 26:08 [3] 2.88 mi (9:04 / mi)
(sick)

From the Friendship Heights Metro Station at the DC/MD border (Western Ave. & Wisconsin Ave.), Friendship Rd. to Willard Ave. to River Rd. to the Capital Crescent Trail, to Bethesda Ave. to Woodmont Ave. to the Bethesda Metro Station. It was humid. Some thunderclouds were nearby but not threatening to pour on me, and they didn't cool it off much. It was in the mid 80s F and initially I didn't feel hot. I just was weak and my lungs were congested. My right quad hurt in the first mile. I coughed out phlegm several times on the run.
8 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 6:38 [3] 1.41 mi (4:42 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro Station to Northfield Rd. Being tired, I rode easy. The breeze felt good. It cooled my sweat from the run and dried me a little.

Running (Trail) 40:47 [3] 4.05 mi (10:04 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:186.5lbs (sick)

Greenbelt Park, MD. From the Sweetgum Parking Lot, the Perimeter Trail to the campground, to the Blueberry Trail, then to the Perimeter Trail to finish the rest of the loop back to the Sweetgum Parking Lot. Though I ran fairly slowly, I felt okay; especially through the first 2 miles. Being lighter was countering the lack of lung power from my lingering cold--the lack of appetite perhaps from the cold has some advantages. I worked in Beltsville today and got out late so it was good that I set out for the run anyway. My lungs weren't clear most of the day so the running helped with that. It was a bit humid but in the mid or low 80s F. After the run I ran into Gene Lehr (now 78), from the Prince Georges Running Club, the club in which Peggy and I met. They had done their Tuesday workout in the park because the regular UMD track location was being used. Gene was his old self, though a little more frail. It was good to see him. At home, I was reading an article about antibiotic resistant superbug bacteria. When I reflexively reached for my shin and thought I was pulling at a scab, I realized it was a tick.

Note
slept:7.0 weight:189.5lbs (sick)

I went to the Summer Short Series training in Manassas, VA (Chin Ridge, starting from New York, Ave). I toyed with the thought of trying to run--that has worked and maybe even helped me at other times when sick. However once I got there, I stayed in the car most of the time. I didn't have good balance when I walked and I was tired. I saw the map and the training looked good. It was a 3m contours only map and people were supposed to go out without using their compass. It was hot and some areas had high grasses but the woods were supposed to be very open. It looked like the deer had been hungry.

We had dinner later. I'd gotten some recommendations for a few places and the one chosen was much farther away than anticipated. A few people who'd planned to go there never got there.

Friday Jul 8, 2016 #

I felt fine going into work but in the afternoon, I got a sore throat. It got worse from there. I was at least able to pickup my bicycle from the shop. Like 2 years ago, I replaced the complete drive train and one shift cable.

The timing of being sick sucks. I was aiming to do more running this week.

Running (Street & Trail) 35:01 [3] 4.06 mi (8:37 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:190lbs

From Northfield Rd., Greenwich Park, to Old Georgetown Rd. to Beech Dr. to Singleton Dr. to Bulls Run Pkwy., to the trail along the school to Bradmore Dr. to Folkstone Rd. to Hartsdale Ave. to Heampstead Ave. to McKinley St. to Garfield St., to Roosevelt St., to the trail at Jefferson St. to Northfield Rd. It was about 82 F. with no wind, and less humid than on Tuesday. I'd worked late so I went out w/o eating dinner. I felt better than I had on Tuesday. Heading out, I was aiming for a shorter route but extended it. During the run, I caught myself realizing a few times, that I wasn't as far along the route as I'd thought. I worked on running form but am still too heavy and weak to do that well for long. Working on it did help me pickup the pace at times overall, I was slowing down throughout the run. I was 8:31 at the first mile, 17:05 at the second, and maybe 25:41 at the third. A late dinner the night before was probably the reason for the apparent weight increase.

Running (Street & Trail Commute) 36:00 [3] 3.95 mi (9:07 / mi)
slept:5.5 weight:189.5lbs

From the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station to Tuckerman Ln., to Rockville Pike to Beach Dr. to the Rock Creek Trail, a detour under a bridge on a dirt trail, back to the paved Rock Creek Trail, to Cedar Ln. Onto the Elmhirst Pkwy. to the Elmhirst Trail, to the Elmhist Pkwy., to Rockville Pike, to Commerce St. to Edgemoor Rd. in downtown Bethesda. I got a late start into a warm (mid 80s F) day with high humidity. Fortunately there was a bit of a breeze. My dirt trail excursion went past a homeless person's camp under the Beech Dr. bridge and some of the trail was muddy. I never had much energy. Going on the flats was about as hard as going up a hill and sometimes the hill was easier. My right quadriceps was hurting and was weak. Perhaps that was a residual issue from my back problems. It was good to get a workout in after a lot of socializing the last 2 days, but much of that was nice too.

Orienteering (Foot) 1:11:14 [2] **** 5.1 km (13:58 / km)
weight:189.5lbs

Summer Short Series at Great Falls, MD. Kenny Walker set a nice line-o through the west half of the park. The terrain was good. It really required focus to keep on the line and to not trip on things. The woods were good as Kenny had announced before the training. I ran in shorts and gaiters with no o-pants. I felt I did okay and was very close to the line the whole way. I got off once as the route curved along on a vague and open hillside, and then took us through a light green area to a reentrant. I realized I was too low but corrected enough to get it right at the reentrant crossing--I hit the trail on the other side of it in the right place. Kenny kept us guessing. I only found 3 streamers but that was all I was to find on the long route.

Running (Street & Trail) 19:34 [3] 2.25 mi (8:42 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:189.5lbs

From Northfield Rd Bethesda, MD., to Old Georgetown Rd. via Greenwich Park, to Johnson Ave. to Heamsteadt Ave. to McKinley Ave. to Garfield St. to Roosevelt. Ave. to Jefferson St. to Northfield Rd. With my bicycle out of commission, I didn't want to let the day go to waste. I got out after dinner, still feeling a little full. I started very slowly going up the hill, and then picked it up a little as the route got flatter. My legs were tired. I hit the first mile in 8:48. It was warm and humid out. I was seeing flashes in the sky so I thought it might be heat lightening or nearby fireworks, but there was no accompanying sound. I could later see that it was 2 storms, one over Silver Spring, and one over Potomac. I also got to see lightning bugs (or fireflies as Peggy prefers to call them).
