Bicycling (Commute) 6:00 [3] 1.41 mi (4:15 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:174.5lbs

From Northfield Rd. to the Bethesda Metro Station on my road bike. It was still windy this morning but cool and dry also.
6 PM

Running (Street & Trail) 1:06:20 [3] 7.61 mi (8:43 / mi) +225m 7:59 / mi

From the Woodley Park Metro Station, I ran down into Rock Creek Park, crossed through Dumbarton Oaks to Glover Archbold Park via the Dumbarton Oaks Trail and the Wesley Heights Trail. From there, I ran up the Glover Archbold Trail out to Wisconsin Ave. via Van Ness St. and then on up to the Bethesda Metro Station. I hadn't run out of the Woodley Park Metro Station for a long time. I've been finishing a lot of runs there so it was nice to do this again. It hardly seemed like the middle of summer. The temperatures were in the 70s F, the humidity was low, and a nice breeze was blowing. Even though I wasn't running that fast, I was glad to feel like I had some energy today. I moved uphill steadily and there was a lot of overall climb. I felt good enough to go past the Tenleytown Metro Station and finish-up in Bethesda. It'd been a long time since finishing there on similar routes too.
7 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 5:48 [3] 1.41 mi (4:07 / mi) +11m 4:02 / mi

From the Bethesda metro station, to Northfield Rd.

Bicycling (Commute) 37:36 [4] 12.1 mi (3:06 / mi)
slept:4.9 weight:175lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 13th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It was a typical summer morning with a little bit of humidity. There was a pretty good wind going. I went into it most of the time but half of Ohio Dr. was a headwinds from the side, and the other half, a tailwind. I got a slow start, unablet o clip-in because of dried mud on my cleats. I got that off at Bradley Bldv., then moved well. I caught a guy who stayed behind me till Georgetown where I lost him. Coming around a blind corner, I nearly had a head-on wreck when a woman was cutting the corner in my lane.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 43:00 intensity: (30:00 @3) + (13:00 @4) 11.9 mi (3:37 / mi)

From 13th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C., to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. There were strong headwinds much of the way. However sometimes when within the trees, I'd get a tailwind as the Crescent trail aligned differently with the wind. Near Fetcher's Boathouse, a smaller younger guy went past me pretty smoothly. I picked-up up the pace to draft a short while but decided I didn't want to push that hard. He slowly moved ahead going up the hill and away but if I'd have stayed behind him, I'd have done less work and been there faster.

Running (Street & Trail) 46:00 [3] 5.78 mi (7:58 / mi)
slept:7.5

Rehoboth, DE. From the trailhead at seaside Outlet Dr., to the Junction & Breakwater Trail, to Golden Eagle Blvd., then back. I started just ahead of Peggy and Max who were on bicycles (I'd begun to fix my flat tire but left the replacement tube at home). They passed me quickly though I kept them in sight until sometime after they turned around. It was in the 80s F and a little humid. I felt that I was running okay, but not as quickly as the last two times out. I could also feel myself slowing down further into the run but I think my splits were fairly close. My time is estimated because I lost it off of my watch however, I did reach the turnaround 2.89 miles out in 23:10, and saw that I was going to finish in 46 minutes. This was a fairly flat run with very gradual longish grades, on bluestone. There was shade for most of it. There were a few other runners and lots of cyclists. My quads were feeling a little sore during the run and I worked on improving running form.

Running (Trail) 31:12 [2] 2.95 mi (10:35 / mi)
slept:7.5

Rehoboth, DE. From the trailhead at seaside Outlet Dr., Peggy and I went along the main trail but turned off on several dirt side trails through the pine forest. These woods were often nice but didn't have a lot of features. They were probably sand that got forested over. Unlike Scotland, there wasn't much detail though there were some reentrants and an occasional small depressions. Visibility was good but randomly spaced holly trees kept it from being too good. In one area there was the old wreck of some kind of tractor implement, disturbed ground, and cyclist trails meandering through it.

Bicycling (Commute) 6:00 [3] 1.41 mi (4:15 / mi)
slept:5.5 weight:175.5lbs

From Northfield Rd. to the Bethesda Metro Station on my heavier commuter bike. It was nice and cool today. It felt a shame that I wasn't riding the whole way to work today.
2 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 6:00 [3] 1.41 mi (4:15 / mi)

From the Bethesda metro station, to Northfield Rd. I had was home a little early but I still had various things to do preventing a run.
10 PM

Running (Street & Trail) 19:23 intensity: (10:00 @3) + (9:23 @4) 2.56 mi (7:34 / mi)

Rehoboth Beach, DE. From Coastal Hwy., to John J. Williams Hwy. to Bryn Mawr Dr., to Radcliffe Dr., to Vassar Dr., to Colgate Dr. to Bryn Mawr Dr., to Radcliffe Dr., to Vassar Dr., to Colgate Dr. to John J. Williams Hwy. to Coastal Hwy. it was not humid, and in the 60s F when I went out. I was feeling the running in my stomach initially. I enjoyed the flat suburban terrain. It reminded me of when I used to zoom around at night on summers home in my college years. The night sky here is better than at home, but still with some light pollution. I was able to see Scorpio, Cassiopeia, and the Big Dipper.

8 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 5:50 [3] 1.41 mi (4:08 / mi)

From the Bethesda metro station, to Northfield Rd. I had intended to do a run similar to my Monday run but it wasn't to be with various things to do.

7 AM

Bicycling (Commute) 6:00 [3] 1.41 mi (4:15 / mi)
slept:6.75 weight:171.5lbs

From Northfield Rd. to the Bethesda Metro Station. I still hadn't fixed the flat tire on my road bike, so I pumped-up the tires and pulled-out my older and heavier commuter bike. The day was getting hot quickly.
6 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 5:50 intensity: (3:50 @3) + (2:00 @4) 1.41 mi (4:08 / mi)

From the Bethesda metro station, to Northfield Rd. It was humid but it had cooled a little with an approaching storm.

Running (Street & Trail) 16:58 intensity: (2:00 @3) + (14:58 @4) 2.38 mi (7:08 / mi)

From Northfield Rd., Custer to the Huntington Pkwy. to Old Georgetown Rd., to Oakmont Ave., to Hempsteadt Ave. to McKinley St., to Garfield St., to Roosevelt St., to Jefferson St., to Northfield Rd. I had a little time before an A-meet planning meeting. I didn't feel very good starting out but I pushed after the first hill and was able to pickup the pace with less struggle.

Running (Street & Trail) 49:07 intensity: (47:07 @3) + (2:00 @4) 6.07 mi (8:05 / mi) +64m 7:50 / mi
slept:6.0 weight:173lbs

From the Silver Spring Metro Station, Colesville Rd., to N. Portal Dr. to E. Beach Dr. to Kalmia Rd., to Beach Dr., to the Valley Trail in Rock Creek Park, to Beech Dr., to the paved Rock Creek Trail, to Ellingson Dr. to the Georgetown Branch Trail via Susannah Ln. to Woodmont Ave. in Bethesda, to Edgemoor Ln. I would have liked to have felt like I had more energy during this run. I didn't move badly, but I had that feeling I've been having, of rubbery legs. I couldn't get much lift. It was 86 F with a breeze going when I was done and I was out of the sun for most of the way. There were some muddy spots on the dirt trail. I wanted to bike to the metro station in the morning but I hadn't fixed the flat tire from yesterday.

Monday Jul 21, 2014 #

Calisthenics (General) 2:00 [3]
slept:3.0 weight:173lbs (rest day)

45 situps. I worked a bit late and didn't have much energy for a run later. I tried to bicycle to the metro station in the morning but I discovered a slow leak in my rear tire and had to walk back my bicycle after only getting a block away.

Orienteering 1:06:38 intensity: (16:00 @1) + (50:38 @3) *** 4.5 mi (14:48 / mi) +156m 13:22 / mi
spiked:17/18c slept:5.0 weight:173.5lbs

Seneca Creek State Park, Lake Clopper Area. Starting from the Quail Ridge parking lot, I went about picking up the controls. I was nice and int he low 70s F, but a little humid. I was sleepy when I'd left my house and didn't realize that I'd left the map at home until I was at the park. It didn't matter. I was able to remember the locations of all of the controls and run to them. I didn't try to run exactly on the line that I'd set for people earlier. To save time, I ran to the controls in most cases. I only missed spiking one in which I'd attacked off of a long sort of straight road. I'd passed the reentrant where I'd misplaced one control by 10-20m the day before, and was able to figure this out. I felt stronger running today and weighed-in the lightest that I had so far this year. After running, I weighed myself again and I was 171.5. Some dehydration probably factored into this.

After this Peggy and I took Max to camp where he'll enjoy the good life for a week. Peggy and I did some outlet shopping that Max doesn't like to do.

Orienteering (Foot) 59:09 [2] 2.32 mi (25:30 / mi) +92m 22:42 / mi
slept:5.5 weight:176lbs

Seneca Creek State Park, Lake Clopper Area. Starting from the King Fisher parking lot, I did a loop and set out controls for a line-o training event. On this loop, it turned out that I hung one control too high. It was above a ditch junction about 10-15m. The junction wasn't that distinct and where I hung the control further up the ditch was better defined. I guess I was rushing. I also inadvertently hung out one more control than I'd planned--that happened because I was tying my shoe at one point feature in which the line-o turned sharply, and I'd got it in my head that I needed to hang one there.
2 PM

Orienteering (Foot) 33:55 [2] 1.7 mi (19:57 / mi) +31m 18:53 / mi

Seneca Creek State Park, Lake Clopper Area. Starting from the Quail Ridge parking lot, I did a second loop and set out controls. I could see a few places where I didn't quite capture all of the vegetation. For some of those I ran around the vegetation to get a GPS track to add it to the map. There was also a rootstock drafted on the map in error.

Orienteering (Field Checking) 1:00:00 [1] 1.0 mi (1:00:01 / mi)

Seneca Creek State Park, Lake Clopper Area. Starting from the Bluejay and Nuthatch parking lot, I did some field checking. I covered the area between the park road and west to the power line ride. The woods were nicer than I thought they'd be. The contiguous area that I mapped to the north and east were mostly some very unpleasant green shades. I found that the extent of that unpleasantness was much less than I had been worried about. I found a few rocks/cliffs, several nice rootstocks, and some scattered bushes. Some of the area had stilt grass too.

I almost got to the Great Seneca Hwy. bridge over its name creek before having to call it quits before the Summer Short Series (SSS) event start time. The SSS was well attended (about 26 people) and lots of people seemed to genuinely enjoy it. I think Ken Walker Jr. was the only one to discover all 14 of the controls (on the Long 5.4K loop) including water stop and the one that I had put out inadvertently--that one wasn't even on the master map that I showed people after they ran, and I'd not realized it needed to be counted when Amber finished first). Most found all 4 controls on the Short 2.1K loop. I didn't get a lot of map comments except for a lot of people enjoying the terrain and the relative abundance of rock detail (for a QOC map). Maybe that meant that people felt I did it correctly. I probably was not entirely consistent with the vegetation mapping--I found that more difficult to do when doing field checking in the summer). It was difficult assessing and defining which woods were White, and what else was green. Don Fish brought back one control. After the SSS and others finished, Don & Sarah Fish hosted a nice dinner party for the group at his home.

7 AM

Bicycling (Commute) 13:00 [2] 2.13 mi (6:06 / mi)
slept:5.5 weight:174lbs

From Northfield Rd. to Ayrlawn Park, with Max on his bicycle, then back towing Max's bicycle. It was Max's choice whether to ride or drive, and he chose riding. It was also nice and cool. After this, I spent an hour cutting and tying-up sticks that fell during recent storms and am hoping that the garbage collectors will take them this time.
9 AM

Orienteering (Course Setting) 37:31 [2] 1.84 mi (20:23 / mi) +67m 18:19 / mi

Seneca Creek State Park, Lake Clopper Area. Starting from the Quail Ridge parking lot, I did a loop and set out controls. I'd gotten a delayed start because of needing to sign some documents. I was intending to do more but had to cut it short for an appointment in Virginia. I felt okay but not particularly strong on this. I hit all of the controls well. I was carrying enough for the whole loop in my right hand and the strings all got into a Gödelian Knot. That took more time. I noticed a few potential map corrections.

7 AM

Bicycling (Commute) 6:08 [3] 1.41 mi (4:21 / mi)
slept:5.5 weight:176lbs

From Northfield Rd. to the Bethesda Metro Station. After dropping Max off by car since I didn't want to get sweaty in work clothes, I switched. It was nice and cool and breezy.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 6:04 [3] 1.41 mi (4:18 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro Station to Northfield Rd. Rushing home to meet a contractor, I sliced through the gridlock near the metro station and pedaled back. There were some headwinds and I didn't feel that strong. I was surprised to have had to work that much for this slower than average time.
10 PM

Running (Street & Trail) 31:52 [4] 4.06 mi (7:51 / mi) +43m 7:36 / mi

From Northfield Rd., Greenwich Park, to Old Georgetown Rd. to Beech Dr. to to Singleton Dr. to Bulls Run Pkwy., to the trail along the school to Bradmore Dr. to Folkstone Rd. to Hartsdale Ave. to Heampstead Ave. to McKinley St. to Garfield St., to Roosevelt St., to the trail at Jefferson St. to Northfield Rd. I hadn't run late much recently and some could say I haven't been running much at all. However, it was a nice cool evening and about 61 F when finished. It wasn't so hard getting out the door. I started good, slowed a lot getting through the park where clouds and tree cover made for a very dark park. I stumbled a few times on the speed humps in the roads, not seeing them so well. I got going good again and felt I was running better than I had been for a long while, since putting in more cycling miles. It just wan't much faster in reality. I'll need to focus more on running with a lot of orienteering coming up.

Bicycling (Commute) 49:52 intensity: (13:05 @2) + (30:00 @3) + (6:47 @4) 14.25 mi (3:30 / mi)
slept:5.85 weight:176lbs

From Northfield Rd. to Ayrlawn Park, with Max on his bicycle, then back towing Max's bicycle, then to 13th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It was cooler this morning and Max rode faster. Though I wasn't alone on the CCT, I broke wind the whole way with another cyclist behind me a long while. There were initially some headwinds but later this became a tailwind.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 34:22 [3] 10.22 mi (3:22 / mi)

From 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Falls Rd., Bethesda, MD. There was a modest headwind and I rode alone and moved fairly well. I stopped to see Max's new team's first soccer practice.
7 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 7:05 [3] 1.72 mi (4:07 / mi)

From Fairfax Rd., to Denon Rd., to Exeter Rd., to Northfield Rd. I rode home after Max's soccer practice. Peggy took my backpack so I had what's becoming a rare ride without a backpack. It felt easier climbing but I was already sort of sore from the earlier ride.

Running (Street & Trail) 53:19 [3] 6.45 mi (8:16 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:175.5lbs

Washington, D.C. From 14th and Independence Ave., SW, down the Mall past the Lincoln Memorial, onto the Rock Creek Trail to National Zoo Dr., up Olmstead Walk to Connecticut Ave, NW. to the Cleveland Park Metro Station. Like just before July 4th, I got blocked as I tried to run along the Reflecting Pool. This time, instead of firework show preparation, they closed the way because one of the old trees had gotten knocked over in the late afternoon thunderstorm. It was sprawled falling away from the pool, and blocked the southern pathway. I took the detour past the WW I memorial. I was running better than I have been though most of this was in the first 2 miles. I was a little angry at some end of the day bad news and that might have gotten me going. I did however, feel lighter too. It was very humid out but the temperatures were in the 80s F somewhere. I climbed through the zoo slowly and was dripping wet upon reaching the metro station. I stretched and my calves were feeling tight. On the train, standing in one place I left a sizeable wet spot on the carpet from continued dripping.

Sunday Jul 13, 2014 #

Bicycling (Commute) 25:34 [3] 3.54 mi (7:13 / mi)
slept:7.5 weight:175.5lbs

From Northfield Rd., to Elm St., then to Norfolk Ave., then back to Northfield Rd. I rode with Max to the theatre, then to have some dinner. I was warm when we started but pretty nice coming back.

Orienteering (Field Checking) 4:15:00 intensity: (4:05:00 @1) + (10:00 @2) 4.0 mi (1:03:45 / mi)
slept:7.5 weight:176.5lbs

Seneca Creek State Park, Lake Clopper Area. Starting from near the Fawn parking area, I finished covering the south side of the lake, up to Great Seneca Hwy. I had hoped to do more, finishing the last 2 hills on the northeast side of the lake too, and re-checking a few other things but it just took me that long to do things right. It was humid and got to feeling hot. I guess the temperature was in the upper 80s F. Leaving the park I could see the temperature fluctuate in different places up to 92 F. There were some nice point features to add in areas covered today but a lot of what I did was to record ditches and vegetation. The ball of my left foot was hurting after this.

4 PM

Orienteering (Foot) 40:49 [3] *** 3.9 mi (10:28 / mi) +68m 9:56 / mi
spiked:4/7c

QOC Summer Short Series at the University of Maryland, College Park campus. The Lennons setup several nice sprints and the twist was that all of the legs were memory-o. I started on the A-loop. I did fine on my first 5 controls though I was taking a while to memorize routes. On my 6th, my long-term memory got the better of me because I thought that control was in a completely different part of the campus. I probably ran double the distance to the area I though that control would be, then in essence, did a lot of field checking. There was a master control map given to everyone so after cracking it open, I found it without too much more trouble. I made another error on the next control but finished okay after that. It was in the low 90s F and still humid but there was a breeze blowing that helped.

Orienteering (Foot) 21:39 [3] 2.17 mi (9:59 / mi) +56m 9:14 / mi
spiked:4/5c

QOC Summer Short Series at the University of Maryland, College Park campus. I did Loop B which was supposed to be harder. The course legs were longer on average but I did them much more easily. I wasn't spiking everything but lost a lot less time. I also felt better running. After running, we all ate at Mama Lucia's, an old haunt from when Peggy and I were still dating and ran track workouts with the Prince George's Running Club. Those days were a little more simple with more time for fun.

Bicycling (Commute) 50:12 [3] 14.25 mi (3:31 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:176lbs

From Northfield Rd. to Ayrlawn Park, with Max on his bicycle, then back towing Max's bicycle, then to 13th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It was cooler this morning and the pace was much more sane. I rode alone. The winds were basically neutral except for a slight headwind from the east when on Ohio Dr. Taking an iron pill seemed to make me recover and feel better.
6 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 40:34 [3] 11.9 mi (3:25 / mi)

From 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. There was a little tailwind and I rode alone. I saw David Onkst running toward Washington, D.C. near MacArthur Blvd.

Bicycling (Commute) 48:22 intensity: (8:00 @2) + (10:00 @3) + (30:22 @4) 14.2 mi (3:24 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:176lbs

From Northfield Rd. to Ayrlawn Park, with Max on his bicycle, then to 13th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. Leaving home, I had to turn back to get a lock for Max's bicycle. I rode directly from there instead of stopping home to drop off his bicycle as usual. Bradley Blvd. was a little bumpy from the road being stripped but not yet re-paved. I hit the CCT at Dorsey Rd., just a little behind another fast moving cyclist. As I closed in, another guy went past and helped me close the remaining gap. We were moving fast but the guy in front of me was a bit over cautious. He'd slow down a lot when passing, then we'd have to speed up to catch the guy up front again. Soon we merged with 2 other cyclists and were hitting 28mph on the downgrade near Fletcher's Boathouse. The guy in front of me was stronger but because of him slowing down to pass others every time, we broke contact with the fast riders up front. Going faster than I would have, I kept in the draft until Georgetown, and then passed him. I actually caught up to the others who were moving more slowly through the city and people started splitting-up. The last guy on my route was a little ahead still but when he saw me he took off again on Ohio Dr. and I lost him. The wind felt neutral but it's possible that we had a slight tailwind.

Bicycling (Commute) 50:32 intensity: (7:55 @1) + (42:37 @4) 14.05 mi (3:36 / mi)

From 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Ayrlawn Park, Bethesda, MD, then to Northfield Rd. with Max on his bicycle. I had better tailwinds and a wetter thunderstorm today. Fortunately, after passing a guy in Georgetown and leading him for almost a mile, he passed and pulled me almost up to Massachusetts Ave. He was as big or bigger than I and created a good wind block. At times he was going up the grade at 21mph. He was trying to get home before the storm but when it came down (lightly) anyway, he slowed and I led again. I pushed-on but was already worn out trying to hang on. Had I stopped there, I would have gotten home in 38 minutes. When I got Max, I was worried it would start raining harder and start thundering but we made it back getting just a little more wet. I weighed-out at 174.5 lbs.

slept:4.75 weight:176.5lbs

From Northfield Rd. to Ayrlawn Park, with Max on his bicycle, then back towing Max's bicycle, then to 13th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I felt better this morning. As I was returning home with Max's bicycle, I saw my neighbor just leaving. It took me a minute or two to get going but I caught my neighbor at River Rd. After that I caught a few others who were moving well and moved ahead at about 24mph. Unlike the last 2 days, there was much less of a headwind. I pulled for at least 2 other riders to Georgetown whereupon we split-up. I rode a little slower after that. After a stoplight, I had trouble clipping-in. My foot slipped off and the inside of my left ankle smacked the pedal hard--that hurt and slowed me up.

Bicycling (Commute) 42:40 intensity: (32:40 @3) + (10:00 @4) 11.9 mi (3:35 / mi)

From 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. Leaving work just as they were locking up the courtyard gate, there was light rain, a thunderstorm was threatening, and the ground was already wet. I moved cautiously, concerned about slipping while the wind buffeted me from ahead and on the side. Things got better at the Kennedy Center and by Georgetown it looked like the worst had passed by. I caught a guy who was riding and reading his cell phone. I pulled him up to the Washington Palisades where he turned off. I slowed afterward, fatigued. The pavement started getting dry by the sewage treatment plan and I cruised my way home.

Bicycling (Commute) 50:43 [3] 14.25 mi (3:34 / mi)
slept:4.5 weight:177lbs

From Northfield Rd. to Ayrlawn Park, with Max on his bicycle, then back towing Max's bicycle, then to 13th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I got passed by a guy moving 25mph down the grade. He was definately stronger. I accelerated for about a mile to stay with him but didn't want to push that much. There were headwinds which were got stronger after Georgetown.

Bicycling (Commute) 40:16 [3] 11.9 mi (3:23 / mi)

From 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. The winds were like yesterday but not quite as well aligned. I still moved well. Had I thought I was this close to breaking 40 minutes, I'd have pushed the last 2 miles more but I'd eased off by then. Thinking I might have an iron deficiency, I had a big steak & cheese sandwich for lunch and I wonder if that helped make me feel better.

Bicycling (Commute) 51:52 intensity: (10:00 @2) + (41:52 @3) 14.25 mi (3:38 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:178lbs

From Northfield Rd. to Ayrlawn Park, with Max on his bicycle, then back towing Max's bicycle, then to 13th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It was comfortably cool this morning. I enjoyed that knowing it's going to heat-up later this week. There was a headwind but I kept the effort manageble while still steadily passing others.

Bicycling (Commute) 41:31 [3] 11.9 mi (3:29 / mi)

From 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. It was a bit on the warm side. I had some initial traffic and headwinds but most of the way I had a tailwind. I was really tired all day.

Seneca Creek State Park, Lake Clopper Area. Starting from the Quail Ridge parking area (near Bob White pavillion), I went over some of the areas in the Long Draught stream valley again correcting a few things and gettng the vegetation mapping for other parts missed before. Then I covered areas near Great Senecay Hwy. I finished-up in the much more delightful forests south of the lake.

After seeing a movie with Peggy and Max, I bent down to look for Peggy's glasses. After the third time, I got a bad leg cramp in the lower part of the hamstring of my right leg. It was very sore afterward and the rest of the evening.

Calisthenics (General) 2:00 [3]
slept:4.5

45 situps. I spent most of the day in motion with some yardwork initially, then cleaning the house, then getting ready for a party. My brother and his family were visiting from Texas, and my uncle and his family joined us. I had again stayed up late the night before putting together deck furniture.

Running (Trail) 38:15 [3] 3.3 mi (11:35 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:176lbs

Peggy & I went for a trail run at Great Falls, Virginia. She led us onto the Mine Run Trail, which ends at the gravel road joining Riverbend Park with Great Falls. We continued west on that, eventually going off onto side trails and a closed intermittant trail, looping around and coming back. We went over some hllls to stay high. We gt back to our parking lot at around 35 min but we both wanted to continue on to the restrooms at the Visitor's Center. I felt fairly weak on the run--maybe not enough iron like my sister Rubina? I was up late putting together some deck furniture that Sears was supposed to assemble.

Afterward we took a family trip to the cemetery -- it would have been Sameena's 56th birthday today. In the evening, we went over to the National Cathedral to watch fireworks on the Mall from far and high--with the strong winds most of the day, I thought they would have to delay them but they went off on-time and were pretty good (just a little shorter than usual).

slept:5.25 weight:177.5lbs

From Northfield Rd. to Chelton Rd., with Max on his bicycle, then to 13th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It was once again warm and humid. I didn't feel like I was movnig well despite coming back from a break from commuting all of the way into work. There were some pretty good headwinds along the water (some of it potentially affected by the approaching hurricane) but that doesn't explain all of it.

Bicycling (Commute) 51:00 [3] 14.5 mi (3:31 / mi)

From 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Chelton Rd., to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. With a storm approaching and getting released a little early, I made good time getting out of town to start the holiday weekend. The traffic was low. I got the first real drops of rain at around the sewage treatment plant but it was mostly light. I noticed a tree had fallen since the morning and was partially blocking the trail there. I thought about leaving Max's bicycle and heading for home but I got it anyway. At home I thoght the storm was going to miss us but soon it was howling and tree limbs started dropping on and all around the house. A big one fell in the next door neighbor's yard.

Running (Street & Trail Commute) 28:38 [3] 3.3 mi (8:41 / mi) +22m 8:30 / mi

From the Ballston metro station in Virginia, N. Stuart St., to Washington Blvd., to N. Stafford St., to 15th St., to the Custis Trail at Quincy St., to N. Nash St., to Ft. Meyer Dr., to the Rosslyn metro station. I ran with about a 8-9 lbs. pack which is less weight than I've lost since the beginning of May. It was primarily a downhill run and unlike last year in a similar situation, I didn't choose to run over to Dupont Circle. Though it was cooling with an approaching storm, it was still muggy and I need do more running before adding more volume. I ran past several old haunts from the 1970s, 1980s, and even early 2000s. The venue for locally famed Harringer Relays at Washington-Lee H.S., from my high school track & field days was neat to see again. The school and track look much better now but I wonder if the racing there is much fun for the people using the track these days. At the Rosslyn station where I was stretching after the run, a guy walked up to me holding a wicker box and started asking me about my running speed. He was younger and I'm not sure he knew how old I am. At first I supposed he was trying to scam me but he said he used to run too and was trying to get back into it again. Asking me about my fastest races, I faltered a bit but eventually remembered some of the times.
10 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 6:11 [3] 1.41 mi (4:23 / mi)

From the Bethesda metro station to Northfield Rd. I took it easy and my legs were tired from standing around a long time.
