Orienteering (Field Checking) 3:17:00 [1] 4.25 mi (46:21 / mi)
slept:8.25 weight:173.5lbs

Rock Creek Regional Park, MD; near Lake Needwood and Lake Frank. I did a lot of map updating by walking around trees felled by the derecho storm that hit in June. I made notes and walked around the treefall while recording a GPS track. The areas walked were mostly steep. The treefall was often distinct enough to create a wall of unpassable green, yet there were ways through and around much of it. I felt it not easy to map with a light green and instead will have a lot of separte darker green blobs.
4 PM

Orienteering (Foot) 8:33 [4] 1.15 mi (7:26 / mi) +20m 7:03 / mi

Summer Short Series: Squirrel Kill at Odenton, MD. After a preliminary of rolling a die, throwing some darts, making, then having a boat race, the initial physical activity was a one-leg memory-o warm-up. After studying the leg, we were to draw the leg from memory and use the map created to get to the next location. I picked an efficient route but taking off with Eddie Bergeron, Tom Strat,Peggy, and Greg Lennon, I dropped my real safety map a minute into the run.. I had been holding it and the one I drew, and the printed map slipped out. Peggy noticed it and told me so I went back. I figured it'd be needed later but it turned out that it was only to be used as a backup
5 PM

Orienteering (Foot) 15:42 [4] 1.86 mi (8:27 / mi) +25m 8:06 / mi

SSS: Squirrel Kill, Odenton, MD. The second event was a sprint on trails and in fields around some buildings. As part of the training, we were to try to keep from looking at the map a lot. It also had one leg just for map memory. When the controls had full flags, I could find them much easier. For the controls with ribbons as markers in the field, I often did not see them even as I ran past. I had been using my magnifying glasses but these don't help for things that aren't right under me. Jon Torrance caught me after a few mistakes.

Running warm up/down (Street & Trail) 2:20 [2] 0.23 mi (10:09 / mi) +1m 10:01 / mi

SSS: Squirrel Kill, Odenton, MD. I jogged with Eddie Bergeron to the next start location.

Orienteering (Foot) 21:42 [4] 2.53 mi (8:35 / mi) +23m 8:21 / mi

SSS: Squirrel Kill, Odenton, MD. This part of the training was to build on earlier memory exercises. Starting with only a segment of map to see, we were to memorize 2 control legs before we'd see another leg. The controls were streamers so one had to be precise to locate them. I messed-up on the second control and David Onkst was soon on me. I held him off a few controls before making a larger mistake by fogetting to hook left. I drew Dave off with me as he chased from behind. By the time we'd recovered, Tom Strat was just ahead. Dave and I passed him on the next leg and all 3 of us bobbled it. David ran right past the control streamer on a fence. Not seeing it from a distance, I went the long way around the fence, and Tom reached it through the fence. Next, David got ahead when I didn't remember a trail fork. I keyed off of some tennis courts and ended taking a longer way to get to the control. I took long to memorize the next 2 legs, then tried to close the gap between myself and Dave. Tom was close behind. I caught David when he didn't remember the location of the second control very well. However, I forgot what number control we were on, and that for the last one we were supposed to remember the leg for it with the legs for the previous 2 controls. Thinking there was still another control before the end, I ran back to the start of the last 2 leg segment, then found out that the next leg was the finish with just a 130m run-in. Dave and Tom got there ahead of me.
6 PM

Orienteering (Foot) 16:24 [4] 1.8 mi (9:07 / mi) +5m 9:02 / mi

SSS: Squirrel Kill, Odenton, MD. For the final sprint, we were to do a normal wood sprint (mostly on trails or in the open) and try to use the techniques of memory-o, without being constrained by not having a map. I did fairly well, making a good choice out of the start by going right. Navigationally, this was fairly easy but I did put the map out of view while I ran along fences or trails. I started with Gary Smith and caught Kathleen Lennon, Peggy, then Greg Lennon.

Running (Commute) 36:52 [4] 5.21 mi (7:04 / mi) +20m 6:59 / mi

From the Bethesda Metro Station, Wisconsin Ave./Rockville Pike, to Cedar Ln. to the Elmhirst Trail, to Cedar Ln. to the Rock Creek Trail, to the parking lot off Garrett Park Rd. In downtown Bethesda, I felt I was running well but did some weaving on the sidewalks to get through foot traffic. Going down to the Rock Creek valley, my pace picked up and after that I was able to maintain it without having to push a lot. I was rushing a bit because I was behind schedule in meeting Peggy and Max to go to dinner.

Bicycling (Commute) 4:40 [3] 1.2 mi (3:53 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:174lbs

From Huntington Pkwy. to the Bethesda Metro Station. After getting Max on a bus to day camp, I rushed off to work. The bus was early but I got to work a few minutes later than yesterday when the bus was on time.

Bicycling (Commute) 5:50 [3] 1.41 mi (4:08 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro Station to Northfield Rd. Since the Internet was still out at work, I came home early to telework from there. I thought I was going slower than the day before but that wasn't quite the case. I was exerting less effort, going into the wind somewhat and carrying a full backpack and a laptop computer.
10 PM

Running (Street & Trail) 25:30 intensity: (22:30 @3) + (3:00 @4) 3.47 mi (7:20 / mi) +51m 7:01 / mi

Running (Street & Trail Commute) 33:03 [3] 4.4 mi (7:31 / mi) +51m 7:15 / mi

Washington, D.C. From 14th & Independence Ave., SW, down The Mall along Independence Ave. and the Reflecting Pool to the Lincoln Memorial, to Ohio Dr. to the Rock Creek Trail, to Calvert St., to the Woodley Park/Zoo Metro Station.. Leaving work, it had just started to rain. I had checked the radar so I knew it should pass soon however it came down in full sunshine for most of 2 miles. Cycling commuters had pulled aside under bridges. I was concerned about holding my iPhone and getting it wet since I'd forgetten to take a running pouch. It was cooler in the rain but I was surprised at the second mile split--the GPS track shows significant error there which explains it but the overall distance was close. One runner had caught and passed me before then near the Reflecting Pool so I guess that had gotten me going. I felt pretty good if not always smooth while running. My legs are recovering from cycling but felt more muscle heavy. I climbed the hill at the end okay, even passing a younger guy which is always an ego boost, but that hill didn't feel so good.

Bicycling (Commute) 6:00 [3] 1.41 mi (4:15 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro Station to Northfield Rd. I got out of work at a reasonable hour, partly since the Internet had been out at my building for most of the day.

Orienteering (Control Setting) 53:17 [2] 2.35 mi (22:38 / mi) +48m 21:17 / mi
slept:4.0

Wheaton Regional Park, MD. I helped set out White and Yellow course controls for the QOC Introduction to Orienteering event. David and Heidi Onkst had organized this.
12 PM

Orienteering (Control Pickup) 1:01:56 [1] 2.76 mi (22:26 / mi) +45m 21:21 / mi

Wheaton Regional Park, MD. After the QOC Introduction to Orienteering, I both picked-up controls and did some field checking for map updates. The fences had changed significantly since they were last mapped. I had earlier made some updates for the event using aerials but they didn't show this detail. I also used my track to update the trail mapping. This is needed in other parts of the park. It'll be easier next time. I georeferenced the map.

Bicycling (Commute) 38:10 [3] 12.1 mi (3:09 / mi)
slept:5.5 weight:171lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 12th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I started out fairly easy and was tired from running the nigt before. Carrying my laptop slowed me down a bit too.
7 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 41:36 [3] 11.9 mi (3:30 / mi)

From 12th St & Independence Ave., SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. There were strong headwinds getting to Georgetown. Once on the Capital Crescent Trail, I moved more easily and quite well at times. I picked-up on drafter at the trestle bridge. He started trading off with me higher up at the water treatment plant. Though I had been moving faster than he in catching and passing him, he pushed the pace faster getting up to Falls Rd. with both of us taking turns. It was slow the last few miles with headwinds and steeper hills.

Running 46:33 intensity: (40:33 @3) + (6:00 @4) 6.1 mi (7:38 / mi) +82m 7:20 / mi
slept:5.5

From Northfield Rd., through Greenwich Park to Old Georgetown Pike, to W. Cedar La. to the Elmhirst Trail, to Cedar La. to the Rock Creek Trail, to Beach Dr. to Grosvenor La. to the Bethesda Trolley Trail, to Old Georgetown Rd. and to Northfield Rd. via Greenwich Park. It was a much cooler night; about 84 F when Ifinished. I finished sopping wet from sweat, even though it felt like there was less humidity in the air. Earlier today, I had had an early lunch, flown back from Kansas City, revised my Lake Needwood courses, and mowed and watered the lawn. I hadn't eaten since the early lunch so I felt weak on the last half of the run. My quads felt weak whenever I climbed, still a bit overworked from recent cyclig.

Bicycling (Commute) 44:18 [3] 11.65 mi (3:48 / mi)

From 12th St & Independence Ave., SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I left work late so I first had to ride through the courtyard and basement of the building to get to 12th & Independence Ave., SW. I was carrying my laptop and my backpack on my back together. I took it at an easier pace but a tailwind initially and for most of the way kept my speed up. I had a headwind the last couple of miles.
8 AM

Bicycling (Commute) 36:44 [3] 12.1 mi (3:02 / mi)
slept:5.4 weight:173.5lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 12th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I was running late this morning so I drove Max to camp before riding in. It was nice riding on my bike after having done maintenance on it. My legs felt a bit weak. My right hamstring had been sore when riding home yesterday and I could feel some of this today too. The winds were calm mostly but there was a slight tailwind from the west along Ohio Dr.

4 PM

Orienteering (Field Checking) 2:50:00 [1]
slept:6.0 weight:174.5lbs

Rock Creek Park, Lake Needwood. Ater getting lunch, haircuts, and som bike parts, Peggy and Max dropped me off so that I could update the map. I'm still updating things from the derecho storm that blew down trees in the whole DC area in abundance several weeks back. The night before I stayed up late and put some courses together for a QOC meet here in September. Rather than fix the whole map, I went control site to control site fixing things at the sites and along the way. The downfall is not hard to get around and makes some of the navigation more interesting by obscuring lines of sight and preventing one from relying on just straight bearings. I had rushed getting going with Peggy and Max and didn't realize that I'd left my compass and pencils at home. I borrowed pencils and used by iPhone compass in tough spots. In most places, I could line-up other nearby features to map new rootstocks, etc. It was a pretty nice day compared to the rest of the summer. The air was dry and in the upper 80s.
7 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 45:32 [3] 11.85 mi (3:51 / mi)

From Lake Needwood, MD to Northfield Rd. via the Rock Creek Trail, Grosvenor Rd., the Bethesda Trolley Trail, Old Georgetown Rd., and Glenwood Rd. I rode my commuter bike with my trail shoes. Without any cleats, going up was slower than usual but the commuter bike is just heavier and slower all around. It did ride smoother over bumps. I was glad for the net loss in elevation and was somewhat tired.

Orienteering (Foot) 1:24:46 [3] 7.5 km (11:18 / km) +305m 9:24 / km
spiked:9/13c slept:7.25

QOC Summer Short Series at Oregon Ridge, Cockeysville, MD. Eddie Bergeron and Francis Hogel setup a corridor-O training session. It was tricky. Eddie had designed corridors for courses that weren't necessarily on a straight route. To be accurate, one had to try to stay in the corridor even though it wasn't always on the optimal route or even straight. Initially, I had some troubles.Eddie was masterfull at removing just enough of the map to make it difficult to use the regular clues. On a couple of legs enough map was whited-out that it was hard to understand what was up or down. There were some shifts in terrain that went from descending to climbing that weren't entirely evident until running the leg. Whole reentrants were blotted out. I got the hang of things after some early flubs. The map had more than a few distinct trees on it that weren't distinct. I blew the second leg with a control being much higher than anticipated. I also blew the fourth leg tryng to interpret the contour over what my compass would have shown me if I'd looked at it. Two streamers had been removed and were never found. Tom Strat caught me a few times before I finally got away. never resorted to using the safety map with everything printed on it. I ran or walked 5.4 miles and climbed 335m on the course. The woods were pretty nice for summertime! It was a fun event for me. The heat, about 89 F and humid while starting out, was't too bad in the forest but the climbs were felt with quads still sore from cycling.

Bicycling (Commute) 38:59 [3] 11.95 mi (3:16 / mi)
slept:4.25 weight:174.5lbs

From 12th & C Street, SW, Washington, D.C., to Edgemoor Ln., Bethesda, MD. I was finally able to get some air into my tire at work, but not until I plugged a hole in the tube. It was new. Going back to Bethesda was nice since I had a pretty good tailwind most of the way. I took it easy while riding on low air pressure. The trail was just about empty; probably caused by a combination of people being on vacation, it being Friday, and the rain in the morning keeping the remaining regulars from coming in.

Bicycling (Commute) 5:56 [3] 1.41 mi (4:13 / mi)
slept:5.25 weight:174.5lbs

From Northfield Rd. to the Bethesda Metro Station. I fixed the flat on my commuter bike last night. Not having ridden it for a long time, I didn't trust it to be ready for a trip all the way downtown yet. The bike felt awkward and heavy when picking it up, but not as slow as my memory would have it.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 6:04 [3] 1.41 mi (4:18 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro Station to Northfield Rd. It was hard not to sweat in my work clothes. The breeze helped.

Running (Street & Trail) 16:00 [3] 2.1 mi (7:37 / mi)

After a quick change of clothes, I went from Northfield Rd. to Ayrlawn Park to pickup Max, and then back. On the way back, Max rode his bike while I ran (in shoes this time), and carried his backpack. Running felt good.

Bicycling (Commute) 37:12 [3] 12.1 mi (3:04 / mi)
slept:4.25 weight:175.5lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 12th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It was cooler again (mid 70s F) but it wasn't evident how humid it was until I reached work. I set out easy but picked-up speed. I presumed a tailwind because I thought I was doing well (23 mph) for the effort that I was putting out. Before Dalecarlia, another guy went past me quickly; I could of drafted off of him but let him go so that I wouldn't push too much. I kept seeing him ahead all the way though Georgetown. Like yesterday, the wind was at the right angle to become a headwind along Ohio Dr. I tucked into it then ran into some other cyclist traffic finishing up.
6 PM

Running (Street & Trail Commute) 10:13 [2] 0.98 mi (10:26 / mi)

From Ayrlawn Park to Northfield Rd. After getting off work, I discovered that my rear bicycle tire was flat. I knew that Ishould have changed it earlier but lacked the time or energy. Rushing to repair it at work before I'd be late picking up Max from summer camp, I was doing okay, only to then discover that something was wrong with my frame pump. It wouldn't push air except for a few of the times that I held my thumb over the valve. I guess a seal somewhere broke but it was odd that it would sometimes engage. Being in a secured courtyard, there were no passers by to borrow a pump from and unfortunately, no other cyclist at work were leaving then either. I bailed out and took the metro system to Bethesda, then grabbed a taxi. The taxi could only get me there (5 minutes late), because of another reservation it had at NIH. I ended up running home while Max rode. I only had my work shoes and cycling cleats (I'd worn the cleats all the way through the metro system) so I pulled them off and stashed them in my backpack. Max is too light to ride safely with his backpack so I carried both mine and his. That was a little awkward running but running with my bare 5 fingers on streets and sidewalks was okay. There were only a few places with sharp pebbles. I don't think that I slowed Max down much.

Bicycling (Commute) 36:48 [3] 12.1 mi (3:02 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:173lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 12th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It was cloudy and humid, but cooler today; about 79 F when I got to work. Spike's AP log from Lawrence, KS a day ahead is often a good indicator of the weather in D.C. I started out more slowly. My muscles were sore and it was taking a while to loosen-up. I rode alone. There were tailwinds by the Kennedy Center but it was calm on Ohio Dr. I felt like I was going faster than it turned out to be.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 53:48 intensity: (10:08 @1) + (43:40 @3) 14.1 mi (3:49 / mi)

From 12th & C Street, SW, Washington, D.C., to Ayrlawn Park, via Huntington Pkwy., then to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. The mileage is catching up with me. I was tired just walking around at lunch. Still, with a good tailwind, I got off to a fast start. Once through Georgetown, some roadies riding a lot of carbon, the loud kind, jumped over me and were gone. I only thought about following them for a second or so. Were I feeling better, I would have been okay tailing them but I've got lots of aches and pains--a more moderate pace was in order and so I did. The angle of the wind against the curving Capital Crescent Trail was such that the tailwind disappeared and sometimes I got a head wind. There were lots of club riders out going the other way to D.C. I slowed enoughf for another commuter to catch me right after Dorsey Rd. Max was ready to ride once checked out of camp. He powered his way up the hills on the way home.

Bicycling (Road) 16:50 [1] 1.87 mi (9:00 / mi)

From Northfield Rd., Max and I wandered around the neighborhood after dinner. He enjoyed reaching 17mph going down a long straight hill. Besides enjoying the shared experience with Max, I enjoyed how the ride felt easy on my legs and loosened them.

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 12th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It was cloudy and humid from the rains the night before. With Peggy getting Max to camp, I got to go straight to work. I rode alone and it was hard to tell what the wind was doing; It's probably best rated as calm. I rode a fairly steady, though not exactly energetic feeling pace. I got there before it started raining again.

From 12th St & Independence Ave., SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. There were moderate headwinds from the NE and it was humid. I was also not feeling so strong. There weren't many people around since I left earlier than usual. I spun well.

Orienteering (Field Checking) 1:40:00 [1] 2.0 mi (50:00 / mi)
slept:8.2 weight:173lbs

Wheaton Regional Park, MD. I went around Wheaton Regional Park with David Onkst to update the map for the QOC Introduction to Orienteering meet that will be held August 18th. The meet will only have White and Yellow courses so I went out in street shorts and Teva sandles. David pointed out some fences that weren't on the map and I spent a good bit of time doing updating for the playground that had been added a couple of years back. We also walked out to a large new rootstock to locate it. In the process, I added some other features and took tracks of trails. Some of them had moved and others weren't on the old map. In one place we realized that a mapped boulder had been taken. I guess it was removed when the did some work in the park. It was hot; in the lower 90s F by the time we finished. We didn't get to some ballfields which are in need of an update. There are a lot of things on the map that could use improvement. That type of serious overhaul will have to wait.
4 PM

Orienteering (Foot) 1:06:59 [3] 7.94 mi (8:26 / mi) +179m 7:53 / mi

QOC Summer Short Series. Gary Smith and Karla Hulett hosted the training for this weekend out of their house near Fairfax, VA. For the Street-O, I had earlier opted away from the "Regular " course and against my leaning, took the "Extra Hilly " course. The area is somewhat hilly for running but compared to orienteering, the steepness wasn't terrible. I had hydrated earlier knowing that it was going to be hot--in the mid 90s F and humid. I loosened-up on the first couple of controls which were somewhat downhill. The map was suitable for cycling or better for a mountainbike. It was Gary's first and I'd helped put the initial base together over a year ago. Gary had taken the Condes default when printing it and so the route lines and controls circles were difficult to see. Most people had used markers to highlight over them. I was about the last to go out so I was a bit rushed. I missed highlighting over 2 legs/controls and subsequently misssed going to them. As I passed David Onkst after one and we'd converged, he explained to me that I'd missed #9. By the time I figured out where it was and how, I was already blocks away. With this being training, I didn't think it worth going back but later, after a long dog leg to #11, I picked-up #9 on the way to #12--this would of given me the equivalent distance had I run the full course and only missed that one control. I didn't discover having missed the other until after finishing. This was fairly fun though a bit long. Gary had estimated we'd cover 6 miles on the 7.9K course but with the dog-leggs and being limited to street or existing trail routes, it was significantly longer.

Afterward we drank and ate. My college roommate Ralph Keith was in the area and joined us. The whole group played a few games and watched Olympic competitions--the highlight was seeing a Tivo recording of Rupp's 10K second place finish--best for an American in a long while :). Max and Nicole sent the time making a music video which surpassed expectations.

Bicycling (Commute) 50:49 intensity: (9:18 @1) + (39:31 @3) + (2:00 @4) 14.1 mi (3:36 / mi)
slept:4.0 weight:173lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to Arylawn Park with Max, then to Bradley Rd., Kennedy Dr. and the Capital Crescent Trail to get to 12th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C., I rode alone and calmly for most of the way after dropping off Max--I was tired. Just before Georgetown, a posse of 3 went past but I caught-on. The group scattered after Georgetown and I resumed a calmer pace again. There were some pretty good headwinds along the water and I just finished-up easy.

Bicycling (Commute) 52:48 intensity: (10:08 @1) + (10:00 @3) + (32:40 @4) 14.1 mi (3:45 / mi)

From 12th & C Street, SW, Washington, D.C., to Ayrlawn Park, via Huntington Pkwy., then to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I was only slightly less rushed leaving work today. The tailwinds might have been better initially. I pushed at times but I was certain that I'd be slower than my ride yesterday because I wasn't trying as hard. It was quite surprising to find myself only 2 seconds slower. Max and I rode back with me enjoying the slow pace, and him struggling to get up hills.

Bicycling (Commute) 49:39 intensity: (8:50 @1) + (30:49 @3) + (10:00 @4) 14.1 mi (3:31 / mi)
slept:5.9 weight:174.5lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to Arylawn Park with Max, then to Bradley Rd., Kennedy Dr. and the Capital Crescent Trail to get to 12th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C., I rode alone after dropping off Max. I had started slower after leaving Max because I was feeling tired from the consecutive days of riding. It was a bit on the warm side too. While waiting at a traffic light on Bradley Rd, another guy came through and went ahead. When the light went green, using Kennnedy Dr., I got to the CCT with just a glimpse of him ahead. I gained for a while doing 23-24mph but realized that I was pushing too hard to do it before backing off. The winds were basically calm. There was a hint of something from the east but I could have just been tired.

Bicycling (Commute) 52:44 intensity: (10:06 @1) + (42:38 @4) 14.1 mi (3:44 / mi)

From 12th & C Street, SW, Washington, D.C., to Ayrlawn Park, via Huntington Pkwy., then to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. As usual, I left work in a rush. A late meeting had been called and even though I was madly shutting down my computer during the call, I had to change and wait for a slow elevator; I left a few minutes later than I thought I could while still managing to pickup Max from camp his after care, in-time. The tailwinds helped again but even so, I was working it the whole way. On the CCT, I passed a lot of cyclists including a group of young teens in an orgainzed club training ride. Their strength to weight ratios were pretty awsome as is the fact that clubs around here have rides like this for their ages. I hardly watched the clock as I rode but kept hurrying and just managed to reach Max on time as they were shutting down. I did notice that had I gone directly, I would have made It ihome in 38:30. Picking Max up allowed me to meet his Martial Arts teacher--Max was given another camper of the day certificate. I had a nice slow warm-down ride with him going home.

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to Arylawn Park with Max, then to Bradley Rd., Kennedy Dr. and the Capital Crescent Trail to get to 12th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C., After dropping Max off, I rode alone. There were much appreciated tailwinds on Ohio Dr. from the west.

Bicycling (Commute) 40:14 intensity: (30:14 @3) + (10:00 @4) 11.7 mi (3:26 / mi)

From 12th St & Independence Ave., SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I left work late again, so again I first had to ride through the courtyard and basement of the building to get to 12th & Independence Ave., SW. I rode quickly getting to Georgetown with traffic. That sure is fun getting a draft off the cars with some parts downhill, and actually passing cars moving or slowed in traffic. Like yesterday, there was a tailwind again--nice to get it both ways today. After Massachusetts Ave., I slowed again but not as much. I was already going slower to begin with.
