Note
slept:6.25 weight:172.5lbs (injured)

After having sat down at home yesterday watching basketball and Finding Nemo, I got up and found it rather tough to walk. Putting weight on my left leg hurt a lot. I woke up a few times at night and struggled to turn on my side; when I did, I could only stay that way for a few minutes before needing to return to my back. I even had a dream where I was bounding down the stairs of a tall building--like I used to do not many years ago. Having slept with my knee straight at night, the next morning I found it very painful to bend it. It is painful just sitting in a chair. I suppose that some of the motivation to run more last week was to try to increase my mileage for March. I didn't feel that the distances were very long but for having had warning signs, I should have taken some more days off.

QOC: Wheaton Regional Park, MD. It was one of those days when I probably shouldn't have gone out to begin with. I wanted to go since I had a day of rest, since it was Mark Mace's first time course setting, since Peggy's brother Paul was willing to run, and since I had to pickup controls later. However, I wasn't mentally prepared and had been worried about injuring my left knee more. I played with Max a bit while waiting for Peggy to finish and my knee loosened up nicely. By the time Peggy was back, it was after the official last start time. I should have gotten to a bathroom before I left but didn't--something I regretted the whole race. Being warned about errors people were making on #1, I went out confidently and quickly. However I quickly lost track of reentrants that I'd passed. With #9 directly in-line with #1, I ran up to #9 and was perplexed when it wasn't my control. I ran circles and then kept misinterpreting trails, etc. Had the battery not run out on my GPS, the track it would have shown would have been ugly. I kept thinking #9 was #1. Finally figuring it out, I ran across a trail on a ridge and straight to it--It was a nine minute leg which should have taken me 3 minutes or less. After that, it wasn't much better. I went inefficiently to #2, then left it badly. I was hesitant to #4, and badly read the 4-5 leg as 4-6. My navigation improved after that however my knee didn't. It started hurting on the way to #8. The need to go to the bathroom kept me from thinking about it too much. The entire day, I had not read the map well and I ran too fast in light green areas. My strength held up okay but was not very strong either. Ultimately, I did more damage to my knee. Mark's course was fun though there were a lot of dog legs; the course got me to a few controls which no one had used before that I could remember.

Wheaton Regional Park. I picked up controls in the eastern part of the park. Having cooled down a bit, I my knee was stiffening up. I had to walk several times but pushed on. Traveling along slopes was painful. Besides the controls, I picked up a control stand and 2 water stops.

Hiking (City) 1:00:00 [1] 1.25 mi (48:00 / mi)
slept:7.0 weight:173lbs (injured)

Washington, D.C. From Ohio Dr. SW., along the Potomac River to W. Basin Dr. to the Franklin Delanor Roosevelt Memorial, through the memorial to the Tidal Basin, north to Independence Ave. to Ohio Dr. SW. Peggy, Peggy's brother Paul, Max and I went on an evening stroll to see the famous Cherry Blossoms. They were very pretty and at peak bloom. The setting sun made it all the better but for the chill air. The walk ended poorly when we had just got finished warning Max not to walk with both hands in his pockets and disaster struck. He crashed badly on his face cutting his forehead, upper lip, and mouth. We made up for it with an unusual cheap dinner in Dupont Circle--nice.

Vienna, VA. From the Vienna Metro Station, Virgina Center Blvd. to Vaden Dr., trails in Nottoway Park to Courthouse Rd. to Locust St. SW, to the Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail to Vienna Town Park, to Follin Ln. SW back to the W&OD Trail, to the parking lot at Park St. After work, Peggy, her brother Paul, and Max picked me up so we could visit my brother's family at my sister and parents house. All this family sharing would have been better had my knee not been hurting. My left knee had been hurting while walking around earlier in the day. I had almost almost called Peggy back after arranging a meeting place when I got up from my desk in at my office and felt a lot of pain. It loosened up when I got on the metro andI ran slower to keep the stress down. After running it hurt more; mostly when walking down stairs.

From Rosedale Ave. Maryland Ave. to Jones Bridge Rd. to Rockville Pike, to Cedar La. to the Elmhirst Pkwy. to Cedar La. to the Rock Creek Trail to Kennsington Pkwy. to Jones Bridge Rd. to Lynbrook Dr. to Chestnut St. to Maryland Ave. to Rosedale Ave. In January when I ran this, I was heavier and it was colder but I was about 2 minutes faster today. I started out trying to keep the pace down. It was in the 50's F. It had stopped raining and was perfect for shorts and long sleeves. As I climbed out of Rock Creek, I suppose I tried to keep the same 7 minute pace and after reaching the top, I kept the level of effort going to the end. My half mile splits on the trail were 3:31 and 3:30. I've been eating a bit too much lately. My knee is more bothersome walking about than it is when running.

Running (Street & Trail) 24:11 intensity: (8:00 @3) + (16:11 @4) 3.62 mi (6:41 / mi)
slept:5.75 weight:171.5lbs

It's Cherry Blossom season in Washington, D.C. so as a native I naturally wanted to see them. For the last couple of weeks now, tourist numbers have been swelling thus there have been a lot of people standing on the wrong side on the escalators, insisting on taking pictures such that anyone walking would have to cross between photographer and foreground subjects to get by, and generally making lunch lines longer. Most want to time a spring trip for the peak of the blossoms. My excursion from 14th and Independence Ave. went along the Washington Monument grounds to the WWII memorial then over Independence Ave. to the Tidal Basin, over the Kutz bridge and down Maine Ave. past the waterfront on Washington Channel to the Titanic memorial at Fort McNair. I returned to 12th and C Streets, SW. With 60 F mostly sunny weather, the pink buds on the cherry trees are starting to pop white. They should be at peak by the weekend. I had to negotiate foot traffic in places. The parking lot on the Tidal Basin off Maine Ave. was closed for the first time during Cherry Blossom season that I can remember but vendors were busy setting up food concessions probably for the upcomming festival. The park service decided to close the lot since everyone tries to head for the 180 spots (according to the Washington Post) and causes traffic jams that back up into Virginia. On the run I felt like I was struggling a bit to keep up the pace and haven't been running enough to be comfortable running every day yet. I didn't realize that I was running this pace.

Running (Street & Trail Commute) 39:47 [3] 4.9 mi (8:07 / mi) +180m 7:17 / mi
slept:6.0 weight:174.5lbs

From the Woodley Park Metro Station, I ran down into Rock Creek Park, crossed through Dumbarton Oaks to Glover Archbold Park via the Dumbarton Oaks Trail and the Wesley Heights Trail. From there, I ran up the Glover Archbold Trail and out to the Tenleytown Metro Station via Van Ness St. and Wisconsin Ave. I'm not sure when I last ran this but believe I was running slightly quicker today. It was odd seeing the areas without leaves. It seemed like the trails had been moved a bit causing me to make some detours. Also, Glover Archbold Park looks as if it would be horrid for orienteering in the summer but looking at it today, much of it was passable and some of it looked rather nice. The trails were in great condition with no mud and good dirt. This was a hilly route and I didn't feel all that good on the climbs which meant most of the way. Going down I was agile and my steps were rather confident; my knee didn't bug me. The temperatures were in the 50s F. For those curious like Peggy, once in the metro station and car, people did give me a wide berth. The spike in my weight was unexpected but perhaps due to eating late the night before.

Running (Street & Trail) 5:01 [3] 0.72 mi (6:58 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro Station, Wisconsin Ave. to Highland Ave. to Maple Ave. throught the parking lot, to Maryland Ave. to Rosedale Ave. I was bushed after the earlier run and running up the escalator stairs off the clock. A tailwind helped me get home.

From Rosedale Ave., I ran the Two Mile route through E. Bethesda. I got busy at work and wasn't able to run at lunchtime. I left work too late for a run on the way home so I left my gear there for tommorow. After getting Max to bed for the second time and still not having any dinner after 9:30pm, my will to run was waning; I haven't been running after work from home much this winter so not being used to it didn't help. I started modestly. My stride felt funny since I ran in my lighter track shoes. I never felt comfortable but kept mulling my way through and climbing the hills okay.

Bicycling (Trainer) 30:00 [3]
slept:8.25 weight:173lbs

We were too busy to go to Westmoreland. After a day of more lifting of junk into a storage bin, with breaks for eating badly (cake) at an Adoption Pot Luck, I got on my bike. Like last week the day after running the QOC Patuxent meet, my left knee had been hurting--right side on the low part. It felt like it needed to be cracked (like a knuckle) or popped into place and hurt when bending if at all with any slight twist. I figured less impact would be best. I pedaled well averaging a cadence of somewhere around 67 to 68 rpm. Maybe less resistance would be better because I recall that I used to cycle at aroud 75-80 rpm when outdoors.

Max got 3 eggs at the hunt this year. Perhaps I should train him next year like several other parents that I'd heard from before the event. Still, I think 3 is 2 more than he got last year. He's already very competitive and I don't plan to encourage a lot of it before he's much, much, older. He reminded me of myself later in running the egg on the spoon race. He was slow; careful not to use his hands unlike others. As a kid I had been slow in a bean bag race actually jumping my way when others poked holes in their bags and ran.

Rosaryville State Park, MD. Having some furniture to pickup from a warehouse in Forestville, I was able to take advantage of the proximity with run at Rosaryville. Without a warmup, I ran the Blue course that I'd been drafting. Since I'd run legs of it earlier and streamers were set out on almost everything, I took several different routes than had been my first inclinations. Overall, I covered 8.36 miles for the course. I felt fairly good. The sleep and the cool air helped. I had stopped at a few points while off the clock, to checkout the mapping of features and to take pictures. I ran taking some video too. By coincidence, I ran into Jon Torrance and stopped to talk to him too. At the end, an equestrian event was going on so I had to detour to simulate an accurate finish time. It was fun being out. I didn't make much in the way of errors but then should a course setter make any?

After getting back home, I spent the afternoon loading more stuff into a storage bin. My arms are getting stronger.

From Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station, Tuckerman Ln. to the Bethesda Trolley Trail, to Fleming Rd., continue on the Bethesda Trolley Trail to Old Georgetown Rd. continue on the Bethesda Trolley Trail/NIH Trail to Jones Bridge Rd. to Maryland Ave. to Rosedale Ave. With the NW winds steady at 30mph and gusting to 36mph, by riding the metro train after work up to Grosvenor I chose to use the natural energy rather than fight it.

slept:6.0 weight:170.5lbs

Washington, D.C. I actually reached wooded dirt trails on my lunch-time run today. It took me 2 miles to get there and not long after that I had plastic trails for a way. I got a little more dirt after that. All it took was hopping off a bridge. From 14th & Independence Ave., SW, I ran onto The Mall and rounded the Washington Monument on the north side. Running along Constitution Ave., NW. I got onto a small paved trail that I'd seen before headed to the Roosevelt Bridge. Crossing into Virginia on the north side of the bridge is something I've done several times before but to do that I had to go all the way around the Kennedy Center. I pursued the river crossing on the south side of the bridge despite signs indicating that the trail ended after 1,000 ft. As the bridge went over Roosevelt Island, I jumped over the rail on the south side of the bridge. Someone had been doing this enough to keep up some dirt paths on the embankment. I had to cross a fence which had been broken or pulled down but at the bottom I was on one of the regular Roosevelt Island National Park trails. I had some indecision on which direction to go causing some retracing of steps but eventually I rounded the island going counter-clockwise. The recycled plastic bridge over the marsh had seemed to be extended since when I was here last but it was in good shape. Seeing the marshy ground and a couple hundred year old tree that had fallen, it was hard to believe they used to farm the island. The dirt trails held up for 1/4 of the way around, after the plastic bridge ran out and I crossed the footbridge that people usually take to get to the island. I turne south on the paved Mt. Vernon Trail and saw a man +100m or so in front of me. Running into 13mph headwinds, I had one of those days when you think you're going fast but the reality was probably otherwise; I spent most of a mile catching the older man. He was an army guy who I thought looked like he was running slow which says a lot for me. It was better when I turned off the Mt. Vernon Trail for the Memorial Bridge. The bridge protected me from the winds coming from the south. I rounded part of Lincoln Circle to Daniel French Dr. SW, and then up Independence Ave. to 14th St. I finished in the back, on C St. SW at 13th St. SW. After the run, I noticed that I'd passed a bit of blood.

ahr:157 max:175 spiked:9/17c rhr:52 slept:7.0 weight:172lbs

I had thought that after my long day on Saturday that I'd be likely to run this race slow. Surprisingly, I ran okay given my conditioning. For the 10.965k course, I ran 13.06k. I had started to leg cramp at control 14 but it went away fairly quickly. I think the better sleep habits I have on weekends shows. Having a lot more flat ground helped too. I enjoyed Dave Onkst's course setting and enjoyed running at Patuxent again. Though we didn't get to the nicest woods in the SW, I liked getting back to the northern reaches. Dave's long leg route choice problems were fun. He had many controls placed in much easier places than he could have chosen but navigating to them, it was easy to lose time. As it was, I made too many errors. I was probably running too fast. Fortunately, the worst (a 180) only amounted to about a minute and a half. See the Split List and Route Gadget.

Rosaryville State Park. Starting from the first parking lot off the Rte. 301 entrance, I ran up mostly along the road to streamer a control and meet Jon Torrance who was field checking the map. There were lots of cyclists in the parking lot who were heading out and returning. The gate to drive further in had been locked. I stopped to take a picture for the QOC web site but the camera battery had gotten worn out. I returned to the car since I didn't want to carry a non-working item for the rest of the day. I discovered that the gate had been opened.

Rosaryville State Park, MD. After a short discussion with Jon about the map and courses, I went to all but two of the remaining controls so far. I was running a light jog between controls but stopped plenty of times to streamer controls, take notes and make map changes at controls, and I stoped at places where I wasn't sure about the map. Most of it was great, just unfinished. It was a great sunny day with temperatures in the upper 60's F. I got a bit thirsty and hadn't intended to be out so long. I expected to fly through one section but had to study it a while--Jon had already updated it but I had an older map version. Running through things, I found the green to usually be more penetrable than I would have guessed but I also found that areas mapped in white weren't always super fast. It was fun being out. After coming home I played a little soccer with Max and carried things out of the attic for storage.

From the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station, down Tuckerman La. to Rockville Pike, to Beach Dr., to the Rock Creek Trail near Franklin St. then north to the Edgebrook Rd. parking lot (north of Randolph St.). When I ran this 7/6/2007, I ran just 6 seconds quicker. I was carrying more weight in my backpack this time (my pile jacket, wallet, cell phone, etc...) but the temperature was probably better--57 F. I picked up the pace as I went. Half mile and mile splits: 3:44, 7:15, 7:25 (includes a slight detour for a closed bridge), ~7:09. Like last year, Peggy and Max were waiting with my change of clothes and playing on the new playground there.

Vernon Trail to the 14th St. Bridge, past the Jefferson Memorial to Main Ave. to 15th St. SW. Independence St. SW. to 14th St. SW. to C. St. SW. to 13th St. SW. I hadn't run in about a week. My legs had been feeling a spring the last few days and I would have liked to have run then. My run today was nice. As with most of the sunny days in March so far, it was windy. I headed into it well all the way until crossing the Potomac River. I figured that I'd have it better going back. It was a nice with a smooth tailwind until I hit the 14 th St. Bridge. There I was buffeted about, having to concentrate to maintain balance--the wind blasted me from the side 20-30mph but only from the waist up. The airfoil of the bridge decking rail was protecting my feet somewhat. I felt fairly good. Unfortunately I didn't have my watch so the pace is estimated.

Running (Street & Trail Commute) 1:08:17 [3] 8.98 mi (7:36 / mi) +120m 7:18 / mi
slept:4.5 weight:170.5lbs

From N. Lynn St. near the Rosslyn Metro Station in Virginia, over Key Bridge to Georgetown/the C&O Towpath in D.C., to Fletcher's Boathouse, onto the Capital Crescent Trail (Maryland) to the Little Falls Trail, to Massachusetts Ave. to the Capital Crescent Trail to Pearl St./Maryland Ave. to Rosedale Ave. I hadn't run longer on pavement since January so I did this commute home to get me more used to it again and gain more confidence running longer distances. Carrying a light backpack, I was fairly tired from the start and not sure how to pace myself. Though I had headwinds almost the whole way home (it was blowing steadily over 20 mph) I usually got partial shelter. I probably was tired because I didn't sleep well and have a phlemy but light cold. I puttered along up the hill. There were lots of cyclists going home too (I'll be joining them before long). Most wizzed by but I actually caught and passed one older gray haired woman as she climbed before the Dalecarlia water treatment plant. She had two panniers both larger than the one I usually carry when I cycle commute. Because I detoured off onto the Little Falls Trail, she got ahead and I had to pass her again just before River Rd. She was a little embarrased and smiled. I was worried someone on foot would catch and pass me; I was moving so slow. Available splits: 7:25 (1 mi), 7:36 (1 mi), 3:44 (1/2 mile), 3:49 (1/2 mile), 3:49 (1/2 mile), 3:46 (1/2 mile), 3:48 (1/2 mile), 3:56 (1/2 mile), 3:54 (1/2 mile), 3:49 (1/2 mile). Unlike last October 1 when I ran a similar route, the hills did slow me down tonight. I sweat a lot but only weighed out at 170. This workout wasn't a confidence builder but it's needed base work to getting better.

Note

My running mileage for 5 days in March (only +20 miles) exceeds all the running miles (outside of orienteering running) for all of February (+19 miles). My weight is down too.

slept:5.5 weight:171lbs

Washington, D.C. From 14th & Independence Ave., SW, I ran a version of the Memorial Tour route. This was during lunchtime. I went to 15th St. to Ohio Dr., SW, past the Jefferson Memorial, onto the 14th St. Bridge, past the Lady Bird Johnson Memorial to the Mt. Vernon Trail, to Memorial Bridge, part way around Lincoln Circle, down Daniel French Dr. to Independence Ave. over the Kutz Bridge to 14th St. SW. There were steady 21mph winds out so I chose to run in the direction which would least expose me and didn't feel much of it. I even had some tailwinds. I ran well and was motivated by the 62F sunny weather. Slowing on Memorial Bridge a little, I passed a group of DOD runners and cruised in happy for some stops at traffic intersections. I saw a few people twice who had chosen to do their own version of this route in the other direction.

Event: QOC Bowie

Orienteering race (Foot) 1:07:37 [4] *** 7.06 km (9:35 / km)
spiked:19/26c slept:7.0 weight:172.5lbs

QOC at Fran Uhler Natural Area, Bowie, MD. The map was one of the first that I started training regularly on and was where I set my first courses. Being familiar made me a little overconfident at times but more often I had other troubles. I'd forgotten about the scale being 1:7,500. Things came up fast and it took me a while to get used to that. The vegetation had changed quite a lot from what was mapped--memory of vegetation helped at times but hurt me sometimes too. I don't recall seeing the new trails on the master map so I didn't copy them--my memory of them helped at times but others were completely new. Several of the mapped ones had gotten to such a state of disrepair that it really was hard to move along them; sometimes hard to follow them too. Finally, I wasn't very careful about drawing my course on the map. On the second control, I was expecting to find it on the low side of a reentrant when in fact it was just before a drop off in a depression--my control description for #2 had been folded over in a holder so that I could see others later in the course so I didn't have that aid. Fortunate for me, I had passed Kathleen Lennon on the way to #2 and she clued me in to my error. There were lots of excuses it seems. I ran okay but was disappointed at the slow pace and multiple small bobbles. My GPS says I covered 5.85 miles on the course; announced as 6.4K, I measure it to be 7.06K. I forgot to wear my heart rate monitor but wasn't that tired at the end.

Hiking (Trail) 1:00:00 [1] 2.0 mi (30:00 / mi)

Bowie State University, MD. While Peggy was running, I walked part of the QOC White course with Max, Alex and Dasa Medag. They ran a surprising amount of this.

Running (Trail) 9:00 [2] 0.9 mi (10:00 / mi) +15m 9:31 / mi

Bowie State University, MD. I jogged over from the university parking lot to the start and after the race, I jogged back again.

Rockville, MD. From Mark Twain Elementary School & Park, I ran trails mostly through Rockville Civic Center Park to get tracks on my GPS for mapping. Though I'd mapped this area earlier, I want to make sure it lines up with the expansions around Lake Frank and Lake Needwood later. I felt okay. At one point in Rockville Civic Center Park a hedgehog chased me. it was wierd because these things don't usually even see people; they use scent a lot. It's never happened to me anywhere before. I wondered if he was rabid but he looked okay. I did have to accelerate but that's why we have ATP.
