Running warm up/down (Trail) 8:09 [2] 1.5 km (5:26 / km)
slept:6.0

East Fork State Park, OH. I jogged the soggy trail from meet HQ to the start of the Flying Pig Middle Distance event.

Orienteering race (Foot) 38:04 [4] *** 4.41 km (8:38 / km) +180m 7:10 / km
spiked:7/13c

Flying Pig Middle Distance, East Fork State Park, OH. I ran the Red course. It had been raining only an hour earlier on an already soaked course. The steep reentrants were tough to get out of. I felt weak either from the morning drive across the state or getting over being sick still. Except for some less than optimal route choices, I navigated reasonably well except later in the race when I started trying to keep ahead of, then with, then behind Spike. I got second place to Peter Gagarin for my first +M45 A-Meet race.

Running (Treadmill) 15:43 [3] 2.0 mi (7:51 / mi)
slept:7.0 weight:170lbs

St. Claire, OH. With working in the morning and driving toward the Flying Pig in the afternoon, I didn't have a lot of time. I used the hotel fitness room starting slowly and finishing moderately with a 7:03 last mile. It still feels a bit awkward to use a treadmill but it's getting easier.

Bicycling (Road) 1:07:00 [3] 16.63 mi (4:02 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:171lbs

From Rosedale Ave. to the Capital Crescent Trail to Georgetown (under Key Bridge), back to Bethesda and Rosedale Ave. via Kentbury Way. As I was finishing working at home and Peggy and Max were out enjoying the pool, Bob Angell called me up for a ride. It being 64 F and sunny, I saw no reason to refuse. I could feel my lack or cycling on hills and on my bottom. I still have some residual soreness in my legs from Sunday.

Orienteering race (Foot) 47:53 [2] ** 3.17 km (15:06 / km)
spiked:8/9c slept:8.0 weight:168lbs

Prince William Forest National Park, VA. As we've been doing, Max and I did QOC's White course while Peggy was out on her run. He was eager to get started and wanted to get in the backpack. We took approaches through the woods where it made sense and hit all those controls perfectly. I stubbed my toe once (my toe was already cramped from thicker than usual socks) and yelled out. Max either mocked me or felt my pain and mimicked me. Some controls were a little further off-trail than I thought appropriate for White. On a trail leg to #4 I convinced Max that we were getting past the correct trail bend and that the control could have been in a pit behind a root stock; consistent with some of the other almost hidden controls we'd already been to. Not being so confident yet, Max didn't fuss and let us double back as some other people seemed to be doing. It wasn't at the rootstock. There was an extra unmapped but small bend so we went on and got to the control after that. I guess the pace and some similar nearby features confused me and caused me to pull up short. Later after I punched at an early control also on the trail but not on our course, Max started to fuss. I gave him some sticks to further occupy himself with (navigation wasn't enough) and he let us go on. He enjoyed spotting controls ahead of us and finished with energy.

Orienteering (Foot) 2:10:54 [4] **** 12.23 km (10:42 / km) +510m 8:51 / km
spiked:18/22c

Prince William Forest National Park, VA. Can you say Bonk? For the first time, I now can. A bit tired from walking Max on the White course, last night's race and the training the day before, I started the Blue course late in the day. I probably hadn't eaten enough after the race the night before.

There were 9 common legs with the Red Night-O that I ran the night before, out of the 22 total. I only took 4 of the same routes. I started well taking a more difficult route to #1 and #2, beating my night-O paces. On the way to control #5, I'd already begun walking in places. By #9, I started making mistakes. From #11 on, I walked practically all the uphills to the finish. A Gu got me from #12 to #16 and my accuracy improved. The physical leg to #20 took what I had left out of me. I walked practically the rest of the way in. I thought I was hearing voices leaving #20 but a second noise indicated to me that it was my stomach growling. I ran my knee into the spike of a branch and was so tired, that I just registerd the experience and trudged on. I had to take a break walking up a hill to finish leg #21 and got there just as volunteers were picking up the control. I started staggering on the way to #22, sweating profusely, not thinking well but still able to navigate. It helped that I did the control the last night--I spiked it from perhaps a tougher but more direct approach. Walking across the field to the finish I was grateful after the effort that Mike Brooks and Valarie left out a finish punch for me well past the official close time. I was the last person on the course.

Max wanted to be held but that would have been dangerous as I staggered to the download and then the car. Peggy held water for me like she does feeding Max. A Smartzone bar (a QOC sponsor) I had at the car never tasted sooo good. I got some food in me as soon as we left. After a nap, I had a big dinner and kept getting hungry till 11pm. Leg cramps were bad afterward too (Peggy had to drive us home and it was a good thing that she did). I had wanted to do the runs this weekend partly to see how I'd hold up to the Flying Pig next weekend and found that I'm not there yet. At least the courses will be shorter.

Orienteering race (Night-O) 1:57:02 [3] **** 7.43 km (15:45 / km) +265m 13:22 / km
spiked:6/12c slept:6.5 weight:169lbs

Prince William Forest National Park, VA. QOC held a Night-O meet in conjunction with the Boy Scouts. The scouts ran all over the place earlier in the daytime and exhausted the understaffed meet director, Jim Chaplin. It was a bit chilly waiting to start (low 40's F) but fine on the run with just a long sleeve O-top. I hadn't run night-O in Prince William before. The courses (Y, O, B, G, R) were set for daytime use and are the same as will be offered tommorow. I ran Red which went through significant downfall and had some physically and technically challenging legs.

Things went sour early. My navigation to the first control was fine except for within the circle. I found the control soon but we were supposed to be e-punching and there was no e-punch box. Going to the second control, I took the long safe way around, attacked from a road bend and didn't find the control. Ted Good was wandering around in the same place. Independently, we came in again from a nearby road intersection and came to the same place so we concluded the control was missing. It turned out that others had found it earlier, a bit further down the reentrant than mapped. I'm not sure if both Ted and I were terribly wrong, the control was mishung or if it had fallen. They'll check it later (The next day Dave Onkst, who'd beaten me and Ted soundly and for more than just control #2 told me it was mishung. They'd checked it and found it low in the next reentrant about 100m away from where it should have been). For now it counts as a mispunch. Going on, I ran well aproaching the next control circle, then went up instead of down a ridge to be safe when it was down. I chased Ted Good to the next control and finally had a succession of e-punch controls for a split. On the next control, I missed by going too low and Ted got ahead. I made a bad +10 min. parallel error going to #6 by not paying careful attention to how I left #5. We were warned in advance not to go to control #9 since it didn't have an e-punch or night reflector. Eventually I caught Ted again at #10 and did better finishing up the rest of the course. It was fun doing some tougher navigation in the dark but I wished I'd not lost so much time on #2 and #6.

Orienteering (Foot) 1:35:17 [3] **** 10.2 km (9:20 / km) +370m 7:54 / km

Great Falls National Park, MD. I was able to get a copy of what would have been last January's MD State Championship Blue Course. That race had been cancelled due to last minute environmental concerns that the Park Service enforced. Since most of the streamers were still out, I ran a modified version of the course. It was 50 F, cloudy, with excellent visibility in the woods. I started from Falls Rd. and went to control #10 first. Because my printer was out of one color of ink, I couldn't print the copy of the course. I had to hand draw it on the map with Peggy's course that I ran last week. Not only was this an older version map but with both courses on it, it was often confusing as to which leg I should be going to. Francis Hogle's MD Champs course only had 22 controls on it and was supposed to be 9.6k, but I ran to some of the controls from Peggy's course by mistake and added distance in the process. Overall, I ran accurately and stronger than last Sunday. I'm still not back to full speed yet. Since I'd only gotten to Great Falls sometime after 5pm, by the time I was doing the last 2 controls (#8 and #9) it was well past what I'd call dusk in the woods. I couldn't read the map enough to know the feature to look for but I ran to the center of the circle well enough to find both streamers. I finished at 6:50pm and sunset was officiallly at 6:24pm (Civil Twighlight was officially 6:51pm). It was a good primer for tommorow night.

From Rosedale Ave. to the Old Georgetown Branch Trail, to Grubb Rd./Terrace Rd. to Spencer Rd. to East-West Hwy. and the Rock Creek Trail. to the Old Georgetown Branch Trail to Rosedale Ave. I did this same route on 2/6/2006 just before leaving to go to Russia the second time; I felt very tired then from the travel the previous days. This time I struggled to get up hills and felt like I plodded along (slightly better than yesterday) but oddly, my time was the same down to the second. About 43 F and sunny outside.

From Rosedale Ave., Kentbury Rd. to the Georgetown Branch Trail, to Connecticutt Ave. to Kensington Pkwy., to the Rock Creek Trail, to Cedar Ln., to the Elmhirst Trail, to Cedar Ln. to Rockville Pike, to Maryland Ave. to Rosedale Ave. I felt tired and sore from the day before but also fairly weak. I plodded along much of the way and slowed a lot on hills. The last .39 mile was about 12 seconds slower than usual. I had done this run in reverse in-between my second and third trips to Russia (2/17/2006) and was over 2 minutes faster. All this leads me to think I'm still getting over being sick. It was light enough out after 6pm to see the quarter mile markers on the Rock Creek Trail; splits: 1:47, 1:46, 1:48, 1:48. Unlike others, Max was eagar to hug me when I came home with my sweaty shirt.

Hiking (Baby Backpack) 12:00 [3] * 0.89 km (13:29 / km) +49m 10:34 / km
slept:7.0 weight:167lbs (sick)

Patapsco State Park, MD; Avalon Area. Hiking from the parking area to the Start Triangle for QOC's meet with Max in the backpack. A little chilly out; in the 40's F and breezy.

Orienteering race (Foot) 36:04 [2] * 2.3 km (15:41 / km) +35m 14:34 / km
spiked:7/8c (sick)

Patapsco State Park, MD; Avalon Area. Max and I hiked QOC's White course--he was in his backpack. I went off trail a few times. The area is steep and rocky but we were careful. Unlike his first course at Greenbelt, Max stayed awake for this course. I pointed out controls when they were visible and a few times he appeared to look ahead for them when I did this. When we got to controls I dipped him down. He batted at them with his mittens like he does for baloons. My one error was going off trail and when avoiding some downfall drifting left to the wrong ruin. I didn't have control descriptions or a punch card so I punched the map.

Running warm up/down (Street & Trail) 5:28 [3] * 0.89 km (6:09 / km) +49m 4:49 / km

Patapsco State Park, MD; Avalon area. After Peggy ran her course, she watched Max and I ran up to the start triangle. I was worried that they'd close the start but I made it.

Orienteering race (Foot) 1:29:01 [4] *** 9.16 km (9:43 / km) +250m 8:33 / km

Patapsco State Park, MD; Avalon Area. QOC's Blue course. The Avalon area is steep and since I'm still not 100% over being sick, I felt the need to pace myself. I walked up several hills that I wouldn't normally. The slower pace did help me keep in contact with the map the whole course. I was pleased to make few errors. I couldn't afford to both because of my physical shape and because I ran without control descriptions (forgot to get these as my routine was thrown off by watching Max). I got to controls and had to be very sure about being at the correct one since I didn't know the codes. However, I was surprised to find that the Blue course had one control in common with the White course that I'd done earlier. I started cramping a little on the second loop. See the Split List.

Orienteering (Foot) 1:14:23 [3] *** 6.23 km (11:56 / km) +265m 9:51 / km
spiked:15/20c slept:6.0 (sick)

Great Falls National Park, MD. I ran a course that Peggy setup and flagged for me and Dave Onkst. The best thing about it was that I was able to run through the whole course; I feel like I'm turning the tide on being sick. In fact, the longer I was out, the stronger I felt. I suppose I had settled into a pace that I knew I could keep. Even though it was slower than usual, I was happy to be able to run up even the steep hills. As I ran the course, I picked-up streamers on the clock. I ran the extended course and it took a while to realize that the extension controls weren't streamered. I didn't want to leave any old streamers out so I wandered the area for the first of the extended course controls checking, reattacking and checking again to be sure I was where the control should be. I also ran a bit extra at the end to get back to the car without passing the park entrance. I was legally paid for being in the park but I didn't want to risk raising worry about orienteering there. For the most part, I was reading the map well, aided by going much slower than usual. Conditions in the woods were great.

Running (Street & Trail) 33:51 [3] 4.5 mi (7:31 / mi)
slept:8.0 (sick)

From Rosedale Ave., Battery La. to Glenbrook Rd. to Edgemoor La. to Arlington Dr. to Bethesda Dr. to the Georgetown Branch Trail to Kentbury St. to Rosedale Ave; then to the intersection of Wisconsin Ave. and Harling La. & back. 52 F outside and I felt cold enough to wear sweats and gloves. The first part of this loop I had run on Monday. It took me 27:04 today; about a minute faster. The second part was out and back to the pharmacy to pickup perscriptions. I'm still feeling slow and weak from being sick. My lungs are congested and I'm not getting enough oxygen. I spent the first half mile hacking away and plodded through the rest of it.

From Rosedale Ave., Battery La. to Glenbrook Rd. to Edgemoor La. to Arlington Dr. to Bethesda Dr. to the Georgetown Branch Trail to Kentbury St. to Rosedale Ave. I think I last ran this on 1/26/06. I felt slow then but was feeling so weak from still being sick, that I was slower today.

Running (Babyjogger) 39:49 [3] 4.0 mi (9:57 / mi)
slept:7.0 weight:168lbs (sick)

Rock Creek Park, MD; Ken Gar parking. My first real test run with Max in the baby jogger went okay. From Ken Gar we went down the trail to Mile Marker 5, turned around to Mile Marker 7 and back to the parking area. I felt pretty bad early on but got better. For a while after the turnaround, we paced a group of women runners ahead of us and picked up the pace. Then they turned off route. Peggy caught us soon after. I had to tie my shoe so she got ahead but we were gaining on her afterward. Returning Splits: 9:13, 8:52. Max was ready to be out after this. He got to swing and go down his first slide.

Hiking (Babyjogger) 25:00 [1] 1.25 mi (20:00 / mi)

From Rosedale Ave., MD Ave. to Chealsea Ln. N. to Lynnbrook Dr. to Kentbury Ave. to Newdale Rd., through Lyndbrook Park, to Maple Ave. to Md. Ave. to Rosedale Ave. After Max woke up and ate, we took advantage of the +70 F day to use the Babyjogger that Kristin and Andy Hall gave us. I only walked except for a few steps. It rolled smoothly. While passing through the park, we stopped at the playground. My strength continues to return.

Orienteering (Foot) 43:38 [1] ** 2.3 km (18:58 / km) +55m 16:57 / km
slept:6.0 weight:169.5lbs (sick)

Greenbelt National Park, MD. Our decision was to get outside some today and we went to QOC's local meet. Max and I did the Yellow course together. He watched over my shoulder in a backpack. Though his eyes seemed closed, I'm sure he'd of shrieked if we started to make a mistake. Perhaps it was too easy for him. We did take some longer routes to avoid Greenbelt's all too common thorns and downed logs but some were unavoidable near controls.

Orienteering race (Foot) 52:44 [4] *** 5.6 km (9:25 / km) +165m 8:12 / km

QOC at Greenbelt National Park. After Peggy ran her course, I went out. Like her, I did the Green course anticipating both a shortage of time and not feeling up to full strength. I hit things pretty good most of the way. Familiarity probably had some to do with that. I left a trail too early going to #8 and got on the wrong ridge with thick vegetation. Some white woods helped me recover but not before losing a couple of minutes. I lost some time going to #10 too by hitting a trail too low. I was pretty beat both doing this and afterward. Being sick had a lot to do with that and made me walk up many hills.

Running (Street & Trail) 14:56 [3] 2.0 mi (7:28 / mi)
slept:9.0 (sick)

From Rosedale Ave. I did the Two Mile Loop through the neighborhood. I wasn't all that inclined to go but went anyway. I immediately felt chills and started shivering. Taking steps was awkward partly because I used my old running shoes--my current ones were in my suitcase that hadn't yet made it home. My side hurt pretty good starting out. It was windy at first but only around 41 F. I felt better in the middle but slowed much going uphills finishing. After finishing, I felt dizzy and not too good. My legs were both sore and tight. I guess it's a combination of sleeping in 3 hour spurts, the jet lag and the cough I picked-up.

Calisthenics (General) 2:00 [3]
slept:6.0 (sick)

45 situps at home in Bethesda, MD. I had wanted to go run when I got home but after getting up at 6am in Moscow for our 1pm flight through Paris to Washington, I was up for nearly 24 hours and too tired. Max slept only about 5 of these hours. He was very restless being strapped to Peggy's and my lap much of the time. We both gave him some walks up and down the isles on the Atlantic leg. To me, it still seemed like the longest transatlantic flight I can remember. Delays at Dulles airport for Max's immigration, a short welcoming from my parents and sisters at the entry gate (and a teary eyed first ride in a car seat) filled the rest of the time but at least now Max is technically considered a US Citizen. I've gotten a cough that I think came from Max.

Running (Street & Trail) 43:52 [3] 5.25 mi (8:21 / mi)

Moscow, Russia. From Vosnesenski Per. to B. Nitiskaya Ul. to Tverskoi Bl. to Tverskaya Ul. to Mokhovaya Ul. to along the north Kremlin wall past under Troitskiy Bridge past Troitskaya Tower, down Znamenka Ul. over the Moscow River on Kamenny Bridge, through Bolotnaya Square, over the pedestrian bridge to complete crossing the Moscow River, up along Kadashevskaya Ul. back over the Moscow River on B. Moskvoretski Bridge, past St. Basil's Cathedral, to Red Square, past the Kremlin, Lennin's Tomb and the GUM, to B. Nikitskaya Ul. to Vosnesenski Per. It was snowing a lot and very windy out. This definately slowed me a lot. I also stopped at the long traffic lights, not crossing until it was legal--at least in St. Petersburg, the Militsia are known to give out tickets with fines and I didn't want to give them any reason. Earlier in the day, having finished adoption work a day early, we had been given a walking tour from our adoption agency translator Katia. We walked out in similar conditions that I ran in, with Max in a stroller and 1-3 inches of snow on the sidewalks and squares that were constantly being shoveled. Max liked the snow at first and went into licking mode. Later we got a clear vinyl bubble installed on his stroller and he fell asleep during the cultural experiences. He woke up for a detour through the GUM (once said to be the largest store in the world; now very nice and overpriced for all but the elite Russians) and a stop at a souvenir shop where he got a Russian Olympic Team luggage tag that he played with for a long time. Our agency translator thought nothing of going out in the -3 C very windy snowstorm with Max and he did fine in his bubble. We saw many babies in stollers in much colder but less snowy days, without bubbles.

Running (Street & Trail) 47:17 [3] * 5.9 mi (8:01 / mi)

After another all night train ride, this time to Moscow, Russia, we did some paperwork at the US embassy and Max got a doctor exam. Peggy and I took turns seeing the city. While Peggy was out, I got my first solo diaper change—Max conked out after that. On my turn running, I went from Voznesensky Per. To Bolshoi Nikitskaya Ul. through Red Square, past St. Basil’s Cathedral, over the Moscow River on Bolshoi Ordynka Ul. up river along Yakimanskaya Nab. to the edge of Gorky Park (I wanted to go in the park but there was a gate there that led into a closed amusement park), back over the Mosva River on Krymskiy Val. Ul. along the river on Prechistenskaya Nab. up Soymonovskiy Pr. To Volkhonka Ul. to Mokhovaya Ul. to Nikitskaya Ul. to Voznesensky Per. (Marriott Courtyard). What a nice sunny day it was (icy sidewalks were starting to refreeze). I stopped a lot to take pictures. The beautiful Red Square was not how I’d imagined it. A 200-300m long rectangle a little over 100m across. Up on a hill above the river, set against the Kremlin walls and other buildings (the GUM and churches) with beautiful spires. Along the river, I did pass one very badly done monument on an island fork that seemed to emulate the Rostral Columns on steroids. Max is adapting much faster that I expected. We’ve got him past a very justifiably pouty stage to one where he laughs a lot. He does want to be held a lot too.
