Weights (General) 1:00 [3]
slept:6.0

I was working late so I only did 30 pushups. My right shoulder hurt. Weight 167.

Monday Aug 30, 2004 #

Bicycling (Commute) 37:06 [4] 12.06 mi (3:05 / mi)
slept:6.75

From Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD to C St. SW, Washington, D.C. With school starting back there seemed to be more traffic both on the trail and roads. I was moving well and ended up pulling a guy into Georgetown doing 21.5 mph on the flats. Strong winds from the SE along the river slowed me the last few miles. Weight 166.5.

Bicycling (Commute) 42:26 [3] 11.9 mi (3:34 / mi)

From C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD. I was worn out from the morning effort and dogged some of this. A headwind from approaching rain didn't help. I saw Pat Zerfas heading out.

Sunday Aug 29, 2004 #

Running (Street & Trail) 37:34 [3] 5.45 mi (6:54 / mi)
slept:7.5

From Rosedale Ave., to the Georgetown Branch Trail to Bethesda Ave. to Arlington Rd. to Old Georgetown Rd. to W. Cedar Rd. to Wisconsin Ave. to Jones Bridge Rd. to Maryland Rd. to Rosedale Ave. After yesterday and mowing the lawn, I thought I'd go for an easy short one. Despite the heat and humidity, I felt better running than I thought I would and went a bit longer. Weight 165.5.

Running (Warm-up) 3:00 [2] 0.3 mi (10:00 / mi)
slept:6.75

Warm-up on the NE Branch Trail in College Park, MD from the 94th Aerosquadron parking lot to the start of the PGRC Women's Distance Festival: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun/Men's Predict Your Time Race. Weight 167.5.

Running (Competition) 19:54 [4] 5.0 km (3:59 / km)

PGRC Women's Distance Festival Girls Just Wanna Have Fun/Men's Predict Your Time Race in College Park, MD. The race starts on the NE Branch Trail then goes along the Paint Branch Trail up to and around Lake Artemesia. Men ran after the women. My time was totally inappropriate. I planned to run at a pace of 21:44 which is right at 7 minutes/mile. I guess the excitement made me go faster as I finished second fastest. It was hard to tell pace relative to what I've been racing recently. It was a flat course in high heat and humidity. The winners tied being only 3 seconds off their prediction; one of whom finished right behind me.

Running (Warm-up) 11:37 [2] 1.25 mi (9:18 / mi)

In Jessup/Ft. Mead, MD, from Prairie Court to the start of the QOC Summer Short Series: Squirrel Chase. Eddie B., D. Onkst., J. Torrance and I jogged along teasing Tim Good about his new O' suit.

Orienteering (Training) 23:13 [4] 4.05 km (5:44 / km)
spiked:12/14c

In Ft. Mead, MD. QOC Summer Short Series: Squirrel Chase: Field1. Somewhat a park O', the theme for this event organized by Ted and Darcy Good was "Chase the Squirrel." An expected time based staggered start was used. Eddie Bergeron was the "squirrel" whom we were to try to stay ahead of and to try to distract with peanuts tossed at him or otherwise when he passed. Jon Torrance started last and was the chaser. The course had multiple controls within the circle so in addition to trying to minimize errors we were to be careful reading the codes and features while trying to think at a high exertion rate. The running in open areas was fun though hot and humid. Eddie's injury and blisters kept him from running too hard as did a couple annoying peanuts which we dragged around in our sweaty palms. I did okay except for going to the wrong feature on the first control and running out the wrong way from #7 to #8. A good time was had by all except maybe Eddie.

Running (Warm-down) 12:50 [2] 1.25 mi (10:16 / mi)

In Jessup/Ft. Meade, MD. From Ft. Meade to Prarie Ct. Staying loose with Dave Onkst and Tim Good.

Orienteering (Training) 29:10 [3] 3.07 km (9:30 / km)
spiked:5/8c

In Jessup/Ft. Mead, MD. QOC Summer Short Series: Squirrel Chase: Wood2. After a short paper test to score our orienteering abilities, part II of the training was to run a standard short course which had many trail options in briared woods. Using a staggered start again people went through the course and times were recorded. Many had trouble with #3 and #5 (very shallow pit). At the end, 1, 2 or 3 minutes could be deducted if you could putt a disc into the disc golf hole from various distances w/only one throw. From the times of the Field1 and Wood2 events the minutes per kilometer were computed for each person. It was explained afterward that the winner of the prizes was the person who had the least drop-off in min/k between Field1 and Wood2. Jon Torrance won followed by Peggy. My mistake on #3 and bobbles on #6 and #8 caused me to have a 3:39 min/k difference (not counting the minute subtracted for the disc throw); it still put me in the top half of those who did both. As always on this end of the series event, more gaming, the making of pizzas, planning for fall events and a good time was had by all. We had the added bonus of Olympics to watch not to mention raising more money for our US Orienteering Team.

Bicycling (Commute) 36:49 [4] 12.06 mi (3:03 / mi)
slept:6.0

From Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD to C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I thought I'd take it easy since it was muggy. I got on the trail just ahead of a guy who caught me at Bradley Blvd., I stayed behind him doing 22.5 to 25mph until the bridge at the water treatment plant. I then pulled at 24-25 down the steeper part of the hill and all the way to just past Fletcher Boathouse. I broke contact there but kept up 20-22 on the flats and within 150m. I realized then that I must have had some tailwind help. In Georgetown, I caught up, we thanked each other for the pulls and finished up. So much for an easy ride in.

Bicycling (Commute) 53:45 [3] 14.21 mi (3:47 / mi)

From C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Bethesda, MD via Rock Creek Park. The beginning was great. The weather must have shifted because the tailwind in the morning remained a tailwind going home. In the park I came up the ridge on Glover Rd. I wandered the back streets through Chevy Chase at the end.

slept:5.5

From Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD to C St. SW, Washington, D.C. Still humid, there were SE headwinds too. Weight 165.5.

Bicycling (Commute) 41:05 [3] 11.88 mi (3:27 / mi)

From C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD. I guess I was tired because I often had tailwinds.

Tuesday Aug 24, 2004 #

Running (Street & Trail) 46:39 [4] 6.8 mi (6:52 / mi)
slept:6.5

From Rosedale Ave. & Maryland Ave. to Jones Bridge Rd. to Wisconsin Ave. to Cedar Lane, to the Rock Creek Trail, to the Georgetown Branch Trail to Kentbury Way, to Rosedale Ave. to Maryland Ave. I had intended to run in the woods but got home too late. Running in the dark was okay again except for 1 or 2 short stretches. I ran quicker than last time by a few minutes. It was warmish. About half-way I wondered why my feet were feeling wet, then realized that I was sweating into my shoes. Weight 168.

Monday Aug 23, 2004 #

Bicycling (Commute) 37:49 [3] 12.06 mi (3:08 / mi)
slept:5.25

From Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD to C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It was a nice crisper morning; cool and dry. There was a headwind from the south along the river. Weight 167.5.

Bicycling (Commute) 42:40 [3] 11.88 mi (3:35 / mi)

From C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD. It seemed like there were headwinds most of the way back. I also had some mechanical problems shifting and traffic in Bethesda.

Running (Street & Trail) 8:56 [4] 1.33 mi (6:43 / mi) +30m 6:17 / mi
slept:7.0

I spent the day working in the yard and decided to relax a bit. Before midnight while it was cool I ran a quick one over the neighborhood hills. From Rosedale Ave., Maryland Ave. to Highland Ave. around Lynbrook Park on Kentbury Dr., Lynbrook Dr. to N. Chelsea to Maryland Ave. to Rosedale Ave. Weight 167.5.

Orienteering (Training) 1:09:11 [3] 6.37 km (10:52 / km) +260m 9:01 / km
slept:7.0

QOC Summer Short Series at Loch Raven, Baltimore, MD. Francis Hogel arranged for a relocation exercise in which I paired with Ted Good. Ted ran on a partial map to a control with me following and not looking at map or compass. Once there, Ted put the map away and gave me another partial map with just one control on it and no starting location. We alternated this way with multiple partial maps in our bag for 5 controls each. The navigator talked aloud the thought process leaving the starting point then went sometimes in a round about way to relocate and confuse the follower. I relocated poorly on leg 5-6 and interrupted a paint ball game twice. Afterward we also critiqued each other and had the follower test map memory by tracing the route. It was a fun exercise for people like me who might need to relocate more often than others as well as a fund raiser for the US Team. Loch Raven has some nice woods though the map could use some updating. I'm still feeling like I tire quickly going uphill though the running felt good. Weight 169 - ate a lot yesterday on my day off.

Bicycling (Commute) 39:54 [3] 12.05 mi (3:19 / mi)
slept:6.0

From Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD to C St. SW Washington, D.C. I felt tired and had almost constant headwinds.

Bicycling (Commute) 39:59 [3] 11.86 mi (3:22 / mi)

From C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Rosedale Ave. in Bethesda, MD. via the Bureau of Engraving alley and Wisconsin Ave. for a short way. I felt awful starting and weak on the flats. On the trail a guy came up on a mountain bike and we traded pulls until I dropped him going up the hill. I had a nice tailwind part of the time.

Bicycling (Commute) 38:43 [3] 12.05 mi (3:13 / mi)
slept:6.0

From Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD to C. St. SW, Washington, D.C. I was pretty much riding alone on this humid morning, though I saw Bob Angell running. I again tried staying in and spinning lower gears. It feels like I'm getting slower. There was a headwind.

Bicycling (Commute) 1:31:34 [3] 25.45 mi (3:36 / mi)

From C. St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD. I felt like having some variety in the terrain so I took the long way home. Out across the 14th Street Bridge into Virginia, up the Mt. Vernon Trail, up the Custis Trail, Old Dominion Rd., N. Glebe Rd. over Chain Bridge back to DC, C&O towpath into MD, up MacArthur Blvd., Egert Rd., Persimmon Tree Rd., Bradley Rd., Greentree Rd. and home via the NIH Trail. A wonderful southern tailwind pushed me up to the top of Glebe Rd. and kept me moving between 22 and 35 mph to the bridge--lot's of fun! I had more help on the rolling hills at the end as a storm changed the wind direction in my advantage and I caught onto the tail of a road cyclist for a way. The hills, not much water and toting my clothes caught up with me near the end.

Bicycling (Commute) 38:13 [4] 12.05 mi (3:10 / mi)
slept:6.25

From Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD to C St. SW Washington, D.C. First commute in a while. I felt tired and had a headwind in places. A drafter followed me most of the way into Georgetown. Weight 165.5.

Bicycling (Commute) 39:57 [4] 11.88 mi (3:22 / mi)

From C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Rosedale Ave. in Bethesda, MD. via the Bureau of Engraving alley. I kept up a good cadence and climbed the hill between 17 and 18 mph but must have slowed in the traffic in Bethesda. I had a nice tailwind part of the time. I saw Pat Zerfas starting to cross River Rd.

Monday Aug 16, 2004 #

Running (Street & Trail) 46:30 [3] 6.4 mi (7:16 / mi)
slept:6.5

From Rosedale Ave., Maryland Ave. to Jones Bridge Rd. to the NIH Trail to Greentree Rd. to Garfield St. to Aberdeen Rd. to Honywell La. to Glenbrook Rd. to Kennedy Dr. to the Capital Crescent Trail to Maryland Ave. to Rosedale Ave. Happy to be off work at a reasonable hour (some things can wait a little more...) I got in a rare run around the neighborhood. My foot was a bit sore before going but felt okay once I got started. Weight 166.5.

Running (Warm-up) 4:20 [1] 0.45 mi (9:38 / mi)

Warm-up with Peggy from Rosedale Ave. to the DCRRC Bethesda/Picnic 5K — Lynnbrook Rec. Center, Bethesda, MD. Weight 166 which was probably up a little since WY.

Running (Competition) 18:50 [5] 5.0 km (3:46 / km)
slept:9.0

DCRRC Bethesda/Picnic 5K — Lynnbrook Rec. Center, Bethesda, MD. Peggy had insisted that this was the thing to do since it was in our neighborhood. I didn't feel as strong as I did the day before. My arms were tired even from the beginning. I went out too fast. I passed Tim Good at the start and Ted Poulous just before a mile. The leaders missed a turn as we hit the high point on the course--we called but they ran an extra 200m at least. I hadn't the leg speed to push down the hills but as usual lately, I was strong and passed people going up them. I ran out of gas soon enough and plodded into a 12th place finish about a minute behind Ted. The course was very hilly and I didn't expect a few of them, being a little unsure of the route. The temperature was at about 80F with modest humidity for August. I never saw the mile marks for splits. This was 6 seconds slower than in June for a new personal worst in a race; the course was harder.

Running (Warm-down) 5:20 [1] 0.45 mi (11:51 / mi)

Warm down from Lynnbrook Rec. Center, to Rosedale Ave.

Saturday Aug 14, 2004 #

Running (Street & Trail) 20:20 [4] 5.0 km (4:04 / km)
slept:6.0

From Montrose Rd. in St. Paul, MN, I went out Montrose to Mt. Curve Rd., to Woodlawn Rd. to Cretin Rd. to Mississippi River Blvd., then took the trail to Randolph Rd. and Montrose Rd. It took about 5 minutes to get my stomach into it but I started feeling good and ran quickly with it being the last day and hours of a nice vacation. I felt strong the whole way but just couldn't move my feet quick enough. The vacation was rejuvinating and helped me believe in my waning athletic ability again--though slower, I felt myself getting stronger and faster again. If only I can get to the point of working fewer hours again.

Friday Aug 13, 2004 #

Running (Trail) 58:31 [3] 6.9 mi (8:29 / mi)
slept:8.0

From Rte. 34 in the Chippewa National Forest, MN. I ran cross country ski trails to Rte. 50 and back; then more cross country ski trails. The trails were somtimes steep, somteimes boggy but mostly pleasant and rolling through dense forest and along some marsh. I heard a big animal snort and hoof it through the trees--probably a moose from the weight of the sound.

Bicycling (Road) 1:43:00 [2] 20.0 mi (5:09 / mi)

From Eleventh Crow Wing Lake resort in MN, Peggy and I rode one-way to Park Rapids, MN to return our rented bicycles. The railroad grade Heartland State Trail was nice with several lakes and marshes and farm fields and towns along the way.

Thursday Aug 12, 2004 #

Bicycling (Road) 2:40:00 [3] 44.0 mi (3:38 / mi)
slept:9.0

From Eleventh Crow Wing Lake resort in MN, a troop of us rode to Hackensack, MN and had lunch. We used the Heartland State Trail along Rte 34 and the Paul Bunyon Trail through the Chippewa National Forest. Only Jim L., Graydon Royce and I rode back. For a while we set a good pace line averaging about 19 mph into the wind. I pulled between 20 and 22 mph (according to Jim's cycle computer) on the hybrid without even toe clips. In the hilly section we rode more at our own paces though we slowed for Jim some.

Wednesday Aug 11, 2004 #

Bicycling (Road) 1:23:27 [3] 21.0 mi (3:58 / mi)

From Eleventh Crow Wing Lake resort in MN, Paul Dickison and Graydon Royce rode toward the town of Hackensack using the Heartland State Trail and the Paul Bunyon Trail. We turned around at an intersection because Graydon had to be back for a golf match. The ride was hillier and faster and we dropped Paul. I pulled quickly on the last 4.5 miles back into the winds.

Bicycling (Road) 2:23:47 [2] 25.0 mi (5:45 / mi)

From Eleventh Crow Wing Lake resort in MN, Cynthia Dickison, Peggy and I rode on the Heartland State Trail to a little north of Walker, MN, did a small loop and then rode back. Cynthia's pace was about 12 mph and she slowed coming back. My rear end was sore.

Tuesday Aug 10, 2004 #

Hiking (Day Hike) 9:47 [1] 0.4 km (24:27 / km)
slept:8.0

In Itasca State Park, from the Headwaters of the Mississippi River parking lot to the "headwaters" where I did sprints across the river. Each sprint took about 10 seconds if I didn't slip hopping on the rocks. After a few photo opportunities with Peggy's family, we walked back... The elevation was 1,475 ft.

Bicycling (Road) 1:16:27 [3] 16.0 mi (4:47 / mi)

I rented a hybrid bicycle and took it back to our cabin at Eleventh Crow Wing Lake resort. From the resort, Paul Dickison and I rode to the town of Nevis, MN and back mostly on the Heartland State Trail. I spun a lot going at Paul's pace in the wind and occasional shower.

Monday Aug 9, 2004 #

Running (Street & Trail) 46:09 [3] 6.0 mi (7:42 / mi)
slept:9.0

In St. Paul, MN. From Montrose Rd. to the river trail and Mississippi River Blvd. with Peggy. This part was at about a 1 or 2 intensity. As Peggy turned around, I proceeded much quicker up to the bridge, over the Mississippi River into Minneapolis, then down river on the trail to the Ford Bridge where I crossed the river again, up the trail to Hartford Rd. and Montrose. I felt good in the lower altitude (~1,200 ft.); not having to hop sage made it easy too. My knees lifted on their own.

Orienteering (Competition) 1:14:55 [4] 9.18 km (8:10 / km) +300m 7:01 / km
spiked:9/12c slept:8.0

RMOC 1000-Day east of Laramie, WY: Day 5. The cummulative 4-day time chase start format had me go at 9:06am. Peter Gagarin lead off at 8:50, Jeff Watson was about 9:00, Steve Gregg around 9:04, Erin Olafsen was at about the same but started late (and sick) at 9:05; young Will Enger started about 20 seconds in front of me. Early small blunders kept me trading leads with Will--we often took different routes. Finally he made an error and I got ahead for good with 2 controls to go. It was a physical day at around 8,000 ft. elevation with icky deep marsh crossings and long runs up reentrants. I'm glad I finished on a higher note with the second fastest time on Red for the day (a European in my age group, here for only one day was 8.5 minutes faster). Overall, I was 2nd in +M40 to Jeff and 5th overall. See the Split List.

Orienteering (Competition) 31:59 [4] 5.33 km (6:00 / km) +110m 5:26 / km
spiked:11/12c slept:7.0

RMOC 1000 Day: Relay. On the Diamond Bay map east of Larimie, WY at about 8,000 ft. elevation. I ran the first short Red leg for QOC and finished 7th right behind Syd Reader (BAOC 1) and Boris Granovskiy (CSU). Jan Ingebristen (RMOC) was right behind me. The other members of QOC's team were Andy Strat (Orange-2.7k), Piers Newbury (Orange 2.3k) and anchor Ted Good (Red-7k). We finished as the 5th official club with CSU's entry being disqualified for lacking a complete list of official primary club members. The course was fast with lots of open ground between pine forests. After control #2, there was a required road run to an extra control, hastily added because a group setup camp on the planned course. I felt tired much of the run and couldn't muster much speed. I was with a group of people, mostly Syd, Boris and Jan, the whole way.

Running (Warm-up) 5:00 [2] 1.0 km (5:00 / km)
slept:8.0

Warm-up from the Visitor Center off off Happy Jack Rd., east of Laramie, WY, to the start of the Rocky Mountain 1000-Day: Day 4. About 8,500 ft.

Orienteering (Competition) 1:04:36 [4] 6.96 km (9:17 / km) +265m 7:48 / km
spiked:8/15c

Rocky Mountain 1000-Day: Day 4. On the Happy Jack map off Happy Jack Rd. east of Laramie, WY. I had fewer errors and felt okay running. The area was much more like QOC terrain with few rocks, wooded reentrants, some fields, trails and marshes. See the Split List. I think I was 5th fastest on the course.

Hiking (Day Hike) 1:18:45 [2] 1.75 mi (45:00 / mi) +120m 37:06 / mi

Hiking up Turtle Rock in the Medicine Bow National Forest(?), WY, Vedauwoo area to take more photos of the huge balanced boulders. There were no blazed trails after a point so much of the time was scrambling around to find a safe route. I got up on two different ridges before running out of time and having to head back for the disc golf game back in Laramie.

Hiking (Day Hike) 1:45:00 [1] 2.5 mi (42:00 / mi)
slept:8.0

Vedauwoo Park, WY. For our day off from the 1000 Day, Peggy and I walked around the Ames monument and Turtle Rock snapping photos of the odd boulders. The many balanced rocks set on ridge tops, in the woods and on the plains were very cool. I guess the freezing and thawing in the 0-3 ft. range helped create the top heavy wonders.

Running (Warm-up) 5:00 [2] 0.7 km (7:09 / km)
slept:8.0

Warm-up for the Rocky Mountain 1000-Day: Day 3. On the Pelican Bay map off Happy Jack Rd. east of Laramie, WY.

Orienteering (Competition) 1:26:43 [4] 9.46 km (9:10 / km) +210m 8:15 / km
spiked:9/14c

Rocky Mountain 1000-Day: Day 3. On the Pelican Bay map off Happy Jack Rd. east of Laramie, WY. I had significant trouble on #3 and #4 along with bobbles on numbers: 2, 5, 8 and 12. I felt okay with the distance and speed but if I were more confident about my navigation, I think I could have run faster. The course, terrain and map were nice.

Running (Warm-up) 4:30 [2] 0.6 km (7:30 / km)
slept:7.0

Warm-up for the Rocky Mountain 1000-Day: Day 2. On the First with the Most map off Happy Jack Rd. east of Laramie, WY.

Orienteering (Competition) 46:42 [4] 4.85 km (9:38 / km) +170m 8:12 / km
spiked:7/13c slept:7.25

Rocky Mountain 1000-Day: Day 2. On the First with the Most map off Happy Jack Rd. east of Laramie, WY. The map was 1:10,000 today instead of 1:15,000 used for all the earlier runs except The Prologue. I lost concentration going to #4. I thought I was leaving #4 headed to #5 when in fact I was only leaving #3. Some parallel features lead to an over 4 minute error. Other trouble at #7 and #11 made for a bad day on a short course. See the Split List.

Orienteering (Control Pickup) 1:31:48 [2] 5.25 km (17:29 / km)
spiked:13/13c

On the First with the Most map off Happy Jack Rd. east of Laramie, WY. I had eaten after racing and felt it trying to run. Though I picked-up mostly Green and Yellow course controls, they were farthest away on the map. On the way I checked some control locations from the Blue and Red course. I figured the practice with the rock detail would help.

Running (Warm-up) 7:00 [2] 1.0 km (7:00 / km)

Rocky Mountain 1000-Day: Superbum Sprint. With fewer rock detail than The Prologue, I did okay. With Peter Gagarin starting a minute behind me, I pulled-up short on the first control and he caught me. I got to the next 2 controls just ahead of him then pulled away when he made a rare mistake. See the Split List. Later after my run several of us went back out on the course to find Mike Minium's teeth. He took a bad face plant fall knocking out 5 which we found. Mike made it to the finish on his own and is now doing okay.

Rocky Mountain 1000-Day: Day 1. On the Middle Crow's Toe map east of Laramie, WY. I made a 5 minute error on leg 2-3, the most technical of the course. The rest was okay with only minor errors. It gave me the lead in my age group (M40) but a few M20's, a few M45's and Peter Gagarin were well ahead. The terrain was fun. The first half was technical, rocky and hilly with aspens and open areas. The second half was in the same area as The Stampede with rolling fields, rocky knolls and pine forest. See the Split List.

On the Midle Crow's Toe map east of Laramie, WY. After the 1000-Day 1 meet was over I thought time in the rocks might help me with the technical areas ahead. Unfortunately, I got assigned mostly yellow controls and streamer pickup. It was still somewhat helpful as I read the breaks in the marshes and some subtle reentrants.
