Running (Street & Trail) 23:57 [2] 2.52 mi (9:30 / mi)

In Luxor, Egypt. Peggy and I ran from our hotel along the Nile River. There was a nice wide walkway with boats docked. We ran south past Luxor Temple, then north again. Sometimes we ran on the high walkway and sometimes low. It was warmer than Cairo and we ran in shorts. Peggy drew some attention but mostly people said things like "good exercise." Running is much nicer and more comfortable in Luxor than Cairo but the air is bad in both.

Running (Street & Trail) 20:43 [3] 2.9 mi (7:09 / mi)

In Cairo, Egypt. A little more than two laps around International Gardens park. The park was closed because it was early. I ran in the morning and was a little nervous. It was cool out and I had on sweats. I felt more comfortable after seeing a group of army men lining-up in columns to exercise. By coincidence, their sweats were grey and blue like mine. On the second lap, I found that they only walked.

Hiking (Touring) 20:00 [1] 1.0 km (20:00 / km)

In Cairo, Egypt. Walking around the Great Pyramid of Giza (built for Pharaoh Cheops). It was 230m on each side but we walked more than the edge. Peggy, my sisters and I snapped pictures and fended off marriage offers. My sister could have had 100 camels. Later, we went down the hill to the Sphinx, and rode Arabian horses around a loop in the desert. My sisters rode camel.

Running (Trail) 39:50 [4] 5.58 mi (7:08 / mi)

In Greenbelt Park: Perimeter Trail. Ran by myself on this cold morning while most of the rest of PGRC took to the roads. Thought it'd be better for my knee. Ice at the wet spots. Glad to run before my trip but felt a bit out of shape.

Running (Street & Trail) 4:59 [4] 0.75 mi (6:39 / mi)

From Quill Point Dr., once around the block.

Running (Street & Trail) 32:01 [4] 4.66 mi (6:52 / mi)

In Bowie, MD: From Quill Point Dr. Hillmeade Rd. to the WB&A then back via Highbridge Rd. & Quetzal Dr. A cool breezy night but much warmer than MN. I tried to run smooth and not hurt my knee more. It seemed to hold-up well.

Running (Street & Trail) 21:52 [2] 2.25 mi (9:43 / mi)

In St. Paul, MN: From Montrose Rd. with Peggy and her brother Paul, north through neighborhood streets almost to the monument, back to Hartford and Montrose. My right knee hurt a little. Going further or harder would have made it worse. It was a nice sunny Christmas morning.

Running (Street & Trail) 38:29 [3] 4.5 mi (8:33 / mi)

In St. Paul, MN: From Montrose Rd., south along the Mississippi River, left on Cleaveland Ave. and back via Cretin and Hartford. Started out for first 1.5 with Peggy. Fresh light snow made it slippery coming back up Cleaveland. My right knee hurt a little before, none during, then a lot afterward.

Running (Street & Trail) 51:00 [3] 6.2 mi (8:14 / mi)

In St. Paul, MN. From Montrose Rd., bike trail N along the Mississippi River to the bridge with Peggy, then across to Minneapolis by myself and S to the Ford Pkwy bridge before coming back across. A cold wind and temperatures in the mid-to upper 20's kept times slow.

Sunday Dec 22, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 43:43 [3] 6.0 mi (7:17 / mi)

In Bowie, MD. From Quill Point Dr., across the RR tracks at Hillmeade Rd. then neighborhood trails to old Bowie. After crossing the tracks again at the Rte. 564 bridge, I returned through Tanglewood Park. Nice & warm 54 degree weather let me run in shorts.

Saturday Dec 21, 2002 #

Running (Trail) 44:51 [3] 5.58 mi (8:02 / mi)

Perimeter Trail in Greenbelt Park. I ran with Elliot slowly for the first 4 miles. I had the big lazies earlier in the week though rainy weather and working late was part of my excuse.

Tuesday Dec 17, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 45:47 [3] 6.7 mi (6:50 / mi)

From Cole Field House, UMD out the Paint Branch Trail to Cherry Hill Rd. & back, then one lap around the track. Stiff starting out on this cold but calm night. Felt good to get a nice run in.

Sunday Dec 15, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 30:48 [3] 4.2 mi (7:20 / mi)

From Quill Point Dr., Hillmeade Rd. across the RR tracks to Lake Glen Dr., roads and trails around Wingate and back to Quill Point Dr. via Severn Rd. I was doing errands and got done too late to make it to QOC's meet today.

Saturday Dec 14, 2002 #

Running (Trail) 40:17 [3] 5.58 mi (7:13 / mi)

In Greenbelt Park; The Perimeter Trail w/Tim from PGRC. It had rained a lot last night rinsing away the snow and ice. A big puddles sucked-up one of Tim's shoes. I had been taking some time off partly due to being lazy, partly the weather, and my hip. It hurt after today's run too. I felt much out of shape.

Running (Indoor) 20:32 [4] 3.04 mi (6:45 / mi)

In Cole Field House on the UMD campus. PGRC shared the loop with a kid's team. They were like ants all over the place. Bob Grumbine ran into a small one who step right out in front of him from behind a pillar. I think the ice was safer but it was nice to run w/o sweats or my boots for a change.

Orienteering (Course Setting) 2:00:00 [3] 6.0 km (20:00 / km)

In Fran Uhler/Patuxent River Parks - putting out the last controls, streamers to the start and water for the QOC meet. Slippery snowy and cold in the morning but at least it was sunny.

Orienteering (Course Setting) 1:30:00 [3] 5.0 km (18:00 / km)

Picking-up controls and water stop trash in the Northern section after the Fran Uhler meet. I tried Randy Hall's route across the snowy slushy green marsh where I didn't expect anyone would go. I got a little wet but no more than any place else. It wasn't that bad, just as he said. The snow really made the navigation easy as there were paths straight to controls everywhere but I was pleased with the meet.

Saturday Dec 7, 2002 #

Orienteering (Course Setting) 4:10:13 [1] 6.0 km (41:42 / km)

Back in Maryland, setting controls in the snow and ice for the QOC Bowie/Fran Uhler meet. It got dark but I was prepared to do some night-o. Icy on the trails but nice with powdery snow in the woods.

Running (Street & Trail) 16:18 [3] 2.1 mi (7:46 / mi)

From the Whindham Summerfield in St. Louis, up Craig Dr. to Craig View Dr. and back. It was snowy and icy on the sidewalk and late at night.

Running (Street & Trail) 1:18:50 [3] 10.0 mi (7:53 / mi)

In Forest Park, St. Louis. Tried to meet Eric Buckley and local runners in the park but snow related traffic had delayed my arrival. I started from the museum and wandered until I found the bike trail near the skating rink. About 1 1/2" of snow were on the ground and more was blowing in. I followed footsteps on the serpentine trail past: the Science Center with its inverted cooling tower shape and dinasaurs, the ball fields, the Wild Lights display, the Zoo, a large mud turtle sculpture, the golf course and returned to the museum in about 46 minutes--probably just short of 6 miles. I wanted to do at least an hour and was enjoying the snowy night so I set off on another loop wanting to see what part of the trail I'd missed--not too much. The snow was deeper now and covering the footsteps. It stuck to my shoes making them heavy. I got to the Science Center and tried to cut across the park but got disoriented in the dark w/o a compass and found myself back on the trail. Correcting, I wandered a bit more across some fields, etc...and happily found the museum again. It was a very enjoyable run. My hip hurt a lot afterward but not during.

Monday Dec 2, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 35:40 [3] 5.0 mi (7:08 / mi)

From Craig Rd. in St. Louis, roads through neighborhoods south of Page Ave. Hilly and cold as a windy cold front moved-in.

Running (Warm-up) 10:00 [2] 1.1 mi (9:06 / mi)

At Iron Hill for the Mid-Atlantic Championships

Orienteering (Competition) 1:00:44 [4] 7.37 km (8:14 / km)

Mid-Atlantic Championships at Iron Hill, DL. Ran well except at the end. See Split List.

Running (Warm-up) 5:00 [1] 0.4 mi (12:30 / mi)

Warm-up in the cold for the Mid-Atlantic Championships Relay.

Orienteering (Competition) 12:02 [4] 2.0 km (6:01 / km)

Leading leg of the Mid-Atlantic Championships at Iron Hill. Stayed behind Mihai through the first 3 controls and punched 2nd at each. I hadn't seen Mikel Platt before who also was running near us. When Mihai cut off right on the way to #4 thinking we were too high, I continued on. Mikel had gotten a little ahead here. I closed a little distance but couldn't catch him on the trail. I finished second ,behind by a couple seconds. John Torrance took the next leg and Marek Filicko anchored our winning team!
