Orienteering (Training) 41:43 [3] 4.0 km (10:26 / km)

In Greenbelt Park, MD. I did Ted Good's Summer Short Series course from June when I was on honeymoon. So I could practice my compass work, I sometimes went through the woods when the trail was better.

Orienteering (Training) 1:23:34 [4] 8.15 km (10:15 / km)

Season ending Summer Short Series at Squirrel Kill (Ted & Darcy Good's place near Ft. Meade). Longer O' this year. Lots of fun and good eating too! I carried a tomato the long loop to subtract 2 minutes of my time. I found myself running near John Torrance a lot to make for an exciting last loop. We both made errors independently. Of course I made an error after pulling a little ahead. I had some trouble w/the memory O' parts. John and I nearly ran off the map at #3 on the first loop. A policeman stopped me on the Ft. Mead H.S. grounds. I didn't realize I needed to punch #18 which was very close to the finish.

Bicycling (Road) 57:20 [3] 16.8 mi (3:25 / mi)

From Quill Point Dr., Bowie, roads around Bowie. Calibrated my commuting bike's computer and found that it is accurate. I also explored some new neighborhoods for possible running routes.

Running (Street & Trail) 53:31 [3] 7.8 mi (6:52 / mi)

In Bowie, from Quill Point Dr. to Fletchertown to the WB&A Trail to the end at Race Track Rd. and back. It was a pleasant cool but humid night. I was doing 6:50's on the uphill return on the trail.

Running (Track) 49:52 [5] 10.84 km (4:36 / km)

At UMD Track w/PGRC. Warm-up of 3.6k Fartlek of 8x200m with +200m jog in-between--34,35,34,34,34,33,33,33. Loosened up and got easier. Thought to do more but didn't want to over-do it. Warm-down of 3.3k. Tailbone area a little tight but knee was good. Nice cooler but still humid weather.

Bicycling (Commute) 20:00 [3] 6.35 mi (3:09 / mi)

Bowie to New Carrollton. Nice cool morning w/no winds. Finally installed a cycle computer on my commuter bike and set the calibration according to instructions. It has auto-start/stop so there's no need to track TL's manually any more though I did hit some. It also said the distance was 6.48 miles. I think I'll need to check it out using my counter wheel before I count it. The 20:00 flat was just a coincident.

Bicycling (Commute) 20:24 [3] 6.35 mi (3:13 / mi)

New Carrollton to Bowie. Working late and riding back in the dark into a headwind. Enjoying the cooler weather. The cyclecomputer read 6.41 miles coming back. It makes sense being shorter than going in because of the roads used. I'd still like to verify calibration with my measuring wheel before using it for distance.

Orienteering (Training) 1:36:49 [3] 6.0 km (16:08 / km)

In the southern section of Fran Uhler Park. Made up a course as I went. Got into some marsh and had to crawl between the stickers.

Bicycling (Road) 1:23:59 [4] 27.9 mi (3:01 / mi)

From Bowie, Prospect Hill Rd. to Hillmeade Rd. to Rte. 450, to Church Rd. to Leeland Rd. to Rte. 301, to Mitchellville Rd. to Queens Bridge Rd. to Mitchelleville Rd. to Rte. 197, to Old Chapel Rd., to Highbridge Rd. to Fletchertown Rd. to Quetzal Rd. to Quill Point Dr. Still feeling like my legs are tired around the knees. I wonder why it took me so many years to try this bucolic route so near by. I tried to spin more instead of cranking hard on hills. With a headwind going out, I managed 19.4mph. Some country dogs that don't know suburbia is coming gave me a jolt of adrenaline on an uphill just before Rte. 301. Rte. 301 was great! I had a tailwind finally plus the car's breezes pushed too. I was going 21-22mph on the graded uphill, an easy 26mph on the flat's and 28-29mph on the gradual downhills. Before I knew it I was back at Mitchelleville where some hills set me back again. Got a flat after running over road debris on Rte. 197 near the town center and had to change twice and use a new tube to get it right. That and some more wind took the momentum out of me and made for another ride in the twighlight at the end.

Bicycling (Commute) 19:55 [3] 6.35 mi (3:08 / mi)

Bowie to New Carrollton. Legs still feeling like lead. Slow climbing. Headwind but no TL's.

Bicycling (Commute) 25:30 [3] 6.35 mi (4:01 / mi)

From New Carrollton to Bowie. 1:35 of TL's. Got a late wedding present at work that was a challenge getting back home on bike. Had a steady headwind that would accerbate the swinging of the over 20" long box in the bag. The bag was steadied by looping it on my handlebars but the blowing and swinging would tend me to steer erratically. I discovered a safe set of picture frames when I opened it w/Peggy at home.

Bicycling (Road) 1:13:07 [3] 23.7 mi (3:05 / mi)

From Bowie, Quill Point Dr. Prospect Hill Rd. to Bell Station Rd. to the WB&A Trail through the old hospital to Rte. 193, to Lotsford Vista Rd., to Mount Oak Rd., to Mitchellville Rd. to Queen Anne's Bridge Rd. to Mitchellville Rd. to Rte. 197, to Old Chapel Rd. to Highbridge Rd. to Fletchertown Rd. to Quetzal Rd. I felt very tired through most of the ride and especially at the beginning. My legs were like lead. The first +7 miles were hot & humid, interrupted w/stop lights, hilly and with a headwind. I only averaged 17mph through it. After hitting stretches w/less stop & go, I picked-up the cadence. Without the headwind, I started scooting, averaging close to 22 mph for a smooth segment of several gradually uphill miles. With hills at the end again, the total avg. was only 19.5mph. This is a far cry from years past when I rode more.

Bicycling (Commute) 19:09 [4] 6.35 mi (3:01 / mi)

Bowie to New Carrollton. I thought I was weak on hills and not going all that fast but this was the fastest since moving to Bowie. Perhaps having no headwind and the difference of magically not hitting any TL's really made a difference. It was cooler out too.

Bicycling (Commute) 21:00 [3] 6.35 mi (3:18 / mi)

New Carrollton to Bowie. Left work early. A headwind was steady the whole way back. 15 sec. for TL's.

Orienteering (Training) 1:09:12 [2] 4.0 km (17:18 / km)

Fran Uhler Norther Section. Flies were fewer and it was less hot than last week. The marshes were mostly dry. I got there late and it got dark in the woods fast making it hard to read.

Tuesday Aug 20, 2002 #

Running (Track) 48:05 [5] 11.25 km (4:16 / km)

Warm-up of 3,700m on the UMD Track. Fartlek of 3,200m (16 x 100m sprints w/100m jog). Warm-down of 3,350m. Most 100m sprints were in 15 seconds. It was cooler than last week w/lower humidity. I felt better but my right knee hurt a little. It was audibly (while running) clacking the first half of the intervals.

Monday Aug 19, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 32:33 [3] 4.55 mi (7:09 / mi)

From Northridge, Bowie, MD; Prospect Hill Rd. to Hillmeade Rd. to the WB&A Trail, to High Bridge Rd., to Fletchertown Rd., to Quetzal Rd. to Quilll Point Dr.; at night after dinner. Steady pace but just a little slower and hotter than in July. Did a 6:57 mile on the trail.

Sunday Aug 18, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 50:53 [3] 7.3 mi (6:58 / mi)

From Greenbelt Park, through the apartments and across Kennilworth Ave to Pontiac Street. Down to Berwyn and across the RR tracks to College Park. Right on Rt. 1, and left to the Paint Branch Trail, to Lake Artemesia and back up Pontiac Street to Greenbelt Park. I started with Tim F. from PGRC. We started easier than last time (early July) but slowed again at Lake Artemesia. It was hotter this time. We were running at 6:45/mi on the Paint Branch Trail. I slowed considerably returning up the hill to the park.

Friday Aug 16, 2002 #

Bicycling (Road) 1:06:23 [4] 22.3 mi (2:59 / mi)

From Quill Point Dr., Prospect Hill to Rte. 193, to Soil Conservation Rd. to Beaverdam Rd. to Edmonston Rd. to Odell Rd., to Springfield Rd. to Powder Mill Rd. to Rte. 197, to Prospect Hill Rd. to Quill Point Dr. 19.7mph going out into a headwind but faster on the hills coming back for an average of 20.2mph. Felt stiff starting and weak on hills. Crank is bad so I need to get a new road bike too.

Thursday Aug 15, 2002 #

Orienteering (Training) 1:22:32 [2] 5.0 km (16:30 / km)

Fran Uhler map on the northern section. Warm out with the flies biting but not biting as bad as last time.

Wednesday Aug 14, 2002 #

Bicycling (Commute) 22:23 [3] 6.35 mi (3:32 / mi)

New Carrollton to Bowie. Slow going due to carrying a laptop and projector back along with my clothes. It was hot too. 10 sec. for TL's.

Sunday Aug 11, 2002 #

Skating (In-line Street & Trail) 48:15 [3] 9.25 mi (5:13 / mi)

From Quill Point Dr, to Highbridge Rd, to WB&A Trail to Rte 450, u-turn back to Rte. 193, to Prospect Hill Rd, to Quill Point Dr. This was a nice way to loosen-up after the rogaine. I was moving out down the hills and steady going up. I timed a 2:45 (graded uphill) and 2:30 (rolling w/bumpy wooden bridge) half mile along the way. It'd been over a year since last I skated and I was a little nervous.

Orienteering (Competition) 7:56:26 [3] 24.44 km (19:30 / km)
spiked:41/47c

Hickory Run Rogain - As "The Newlyweds," Peggy and I teamed-up for the first time in competition. I'd taken the last 2 days off and it really helped me recover from last week's French Creek race where I ran out of water. We had fun though we got in some early trouble. This was my first rogaine and Peggy's 4th. We were glad it was on an orienteering map. We thought it unlikely to get all controls so our strategy was to cover the greener east side of the map first while fresh, then cover the west side. We skipped low point controls. Peggy did most of the navigating as can be expected. I helped trying to keep us in straight lines, consulting where questions of position arose, confirming routes of attack and spotting controls when near. We drank and ate throughout, never losing strength. We had the most trouble with control 57, our third control. Coming to it from 41, we got too deep and into rough green; coming back to it from the trail was almost easy. We got #97 but it cost us a lot of time getting in and out. I could tell for a little while where we were while going to #97 but Peggy nailed it for us. We also had a little trouble at #94 and #42. Our route was: 24, 41, 57, 27, 61, 83, 36, 31, 92, 55, 87, 47, 95, 71, 65, 59W, 49, 76, 73, 35, 97, 85, 46, 77, 75, 48, 74, 91, 25, 44, 56, 58W, 43, 81, 94, 89, 64, 22, 37, 62, 42, 14, 39, 72, 12, 54, 11. For our effort, we got 2nd in Coed Masters to Pavlina and Joe Brautigam, 3rd overall.

Bicycling (Commute) 19:45 [4] 6.35 mi (3:07 / mi)

Bowie to New Carrolton - Very cool morning w/calm winds. Still tired from the
long workouts last weekend. 5 seconds for TL's.

Bicycling (Commute) 32:15 [3] 9.85 mi (3:16 / mi)

From New Carrollton to Greenbelt, then to Bowie. Had to stop by the old house to see if they replaced the roof properly. Felt tired but I was riding fairly quickly.

Tuesday Aug 6, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 45:26 [3] 5.9 mi (7:42 / mi)

From Eleanor Roosevelt HS, in Greenbelt, Greenbelt Woods to Ridge Rd. to Buddy Attic Park, around the lake, to the high school. It was a much cooler day than recently and also two weeks ago when I did this loop last. I was again sore and tired but this time from the last weekend's racing and orienteering. I was much slower than last time (42:34) but this is because I started slow w/Peggy to loosen-up as she warmed-up for a track workout.

Monday Aug 5, 2002 #

Bicycling (Commute) 21:02 [3] 6.35 mi (3:19 / mi)

Bicycling (Commute) 20:27 [4] 6.35 mi (3:13 / mi)

New Carrollton to Bowie. Riding back in light rain trying to beat a thunderstorm, I had some headwind and some tailwind. 1:15 for TL's.

Sunday Aug 4, 2002 #

Orienteering (Competition) 2:55:19 [4] 12.0 km (14:37 / km)

DVOA's Long O' Championships. I missed bad on #6, #7, and #16. It was a physical course w/over 400m of climb. I added to that w/mistakes. What was worse was the heat and humidity (about 95F). I started at noon. The last water control had no water. I did a lot of walking. See the Split List.

Saturday Aug 3, 2002 #

Running (Trail) 24:27 [3] 3.2 mi (7:38 / mi)

Putting out & picking-up controls Great Falls Park, MD. I was setting-up for a Memory-O Summer Short Series excercise and got there late (partly due to computer problems and a thunderstorm). It was raining when I started setting things out. I ran w/my backpack on filled w/tangled controls and maps. We finally started at 7pm with it getting darkish. About 20 people came.
