Bicycling (Commute) 21:25 [3] 6.35 mi (3:22 / mi)

Bowie to New Carrollton. Much drier air but still warm. 1:30 for TL's.

Bicycling (Commute) 1:32:15 [4] 26.95 mi (3:25 / mi)

Long Way Home Again - From New Carrollton, Ardwick Ardmore to Lotsford Vista Rd. to Woodmore Rd. to Mitchellville Rd. to Queens Bridge Rd. to Rte. 214, to Patuxent River Rd. to Governor's Bridge Rd, to Laurel-Bowie Rd (Rte. 197), to Old Chapel Rd. to High Bridge Rd. to Fletchertown Rd. to Quetzal Rd. to Quill Point Dr. It was hot again but I felt good again. The speed wasn't bad for carrying weight and the 8:30 of TL's. This time I went farther and the sun set while I was still on the other side of the Patuxent and I rode back in the dusk--lucky I had my lights. Some tailwinds on Woodmore Rd. helped but I felt them coming back on 197. I really felt that needed a workout like this since I haven't been doing them as much as in the past.

Running (Track) 14:13 [3] 2.25 mi (6:19 / mi)

At Eleanor Roosevelt HS in Greenbelt with PGRC. I got there very late and only had time to do this before everyone left for dinner.

Bicycling (Commute) 23:00 [3] 6.35 mi (3:37 / mi)

Long Way Home - From New Carrollton, Ardwick Ardmore to MLK to Ardwick Ardmore Rd. to Lotsford Vista Rd. to Woodmore Rd. to Mitchellville Rd. to Laurel-Bowie Rd (Rte. 197), to Old Chapel Rd. to High Bridge Rd. to Fletchertown Rd. to Quetzal Rd. to Quill Point Dr. It was hot but I felt good. I would have gone farther but the sun was setting. Some tailwinds on Woodmore Rd. helped. 4:30 for TL's.

Orienteering (Training) 38:00 [2] 3.5 km (10:51 / km)

Memory-O with shadowing in Great Falls Park with Peggy. I was surprised to be able to find what I did. It sure helps the confidence though I was tricked a little by changing vegetation. It was hot and humid enough out that I had already started sweating in the car with the A/C on while driving to the park.

Saturday Jul 27, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 49:08 [4] 7.3 mi (6:44 / mi)

From Greenbelt Park, through the apartments and across Kennilworth Ave to Pontiac Street. Down to Berwyn and across the RR tracks to College Park. Right on Rt. 1, and left to the Paint Branch Trail, to Lake Artemesia and back up Pontiac Street to Greenbelt Park. I started with Jim from PGRC. He started fast but suddenly crashed at Lake Artemesia. We were running at 6:33/mi on the Paint Branch Trail. I slowed considerably returning up the hill to the park.

From Northridge, Bowie, MD; Prospect Hill Rd. to Hillmeade Rd. to the WB&A Trail, to High Bridge Rd., to Fletchertown Rd., to Quetzal Rd. to Quilll Point Dr.; at night after dinner. Started slow but picked it up. Was doing 6:50's on the trail.

Bicycling (Commute) 22:11 [3] 6.35 mi (3:30 / mi)

From Eleanor Roosevelt HS, in Greenbelt, Greenbelt Woods to Ridge Rd. to Buddy Attic Park, around the lake, to the high school. Very hot to start though there was a breeze. I got in with enough time to change and leave to eat w/PGRC before the rain came. I was sore and tired from the ride yesterday and increased recent activity.

Monday Jul 22, 2002 #

Sunday Jul 21, 2002 #

Bicycling (Road) 48:06 [3] 15.2 mi (3:10 / mi)

From Northridge, Bowie to Windsor Green, Greenbelt via old Bowie and Good Luck Rd. Windy. Paused in Greenbelt to water plants and visit old neighbor, then returned on Greenbelt Rd. Just wanted to take it easy since my legs were sore.

Saturday Jul 20, 2002 #

Running (Trail) 40:30 [3] 5.56 mi (7:17 / mi)

PGRC Saturday Practice - Greenbelt Park Perimeter Trail from Sweetgum parking. Ran with a new guy named Tim. He cramped on the way back so we stopped then slowed. Stop time was included but the total time was estimated since neither of us had our watches. I felt better than the previous day. Saw John Torrance afterward as he volunteered to train young ROTC'ers in orienteering.

Friday Jul 19, 2002 #

Running (Trail) 44:46 [4] 6.4 mi (7:00 / mi)

PGRC Poker Run at Buddy Attick Park - I did 5 loops (1.28 miles/loop) around the lake and got a pair of aces to take second place and won $20. It was hot (around 90F and humid). I was either out of shape, not used to the weather or tired still from APOC.

Wednesday Jul 17, 2002 #

Orienteering (Training) 1:19:48 [2] 5.0 km (15:58 / km)

At Bowie State. It was hot and nasty out. Black and yellow flies were biting and pestered me constantly so that I didn't notice the mosquitoes until after I finished. Even the "white" areas of woodland were overgrown. I wasn't very fast because I wanted to maintain as much contact as I could. There was significant new construction of roads (paved and unpaved) and trails that makes areas of the map a bit out of date. Estimated the distance and used an old course.

Tuesday Jul 16, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 32:00 [3] 4.2 mi (7:37 / mi)

From the UMD Track, a loop around the golf course, coming back on Adelphi Rd. I kept going down dead ends and also finding myself back on the greens. There were nice parts of the trail but it's too bad that a route hadn't been made all the way around. There was more to it before the tornado ripped-up the trees on the east side. It was hot but dry--my mouth was dry the whole way.

Orienteering (Competition) 1:54:23 [4] 7.8 km (14:40 / km)

APOC Day 6 of 6; North American Championships Day 2 of 2. On the Dalmuir map near Edmonton, Canada. I bombed badly (20 minutes) on #2 and had a very hard time relocating. After that I got better but later somehow got confused about which control I was on and made a type of parrallel error. I inadvertently skipped #12 in the process thus DQing myself. The bomb on #12 alone cost me about 27 minutes in error relocating and getting to #13. Besides these 2, I would have had a decent time but that's all part of the sport. This is getting to be a bad habit with skipping controls.

Running (Trail) 12:00 [2] 2.5 km (4:48 / km)

Warm-up for APOC Day 6 on the road and the trail to the start.

Saturday Jul 13, 2002 #

Orienteering (Competition) 1:25:33 [4] 8.1 km (10:34 / km)
spiked:7/13c

APOC Day 5 of 6; North American Championships Day 1 of 2. On the Dalmuir map near Edmonton, Canada. Got off to a good start on a map that most had difficulty with. I made 2 errors (one big) but got 4th for the day. This was much needed redemption for my last several disasterous runs.

Running (Trail) 9:40 [2] 2.0 km (4:50 / km)

Warm-up for APOC Day 5. Jogged on the dirt road.

Friday Jul 12, 2002 #

Running (Trail) 10:00 [2] 1.8 km (5:33 / km)

Warm-up for APOC Day 4 of 6; Canadian Short Championships. Made a bad parallel error on the second control and could figure it out for a long time... Another bad day.

Orienteering (Competition) 56:28 [4] 3.52 km (16:03 / km)

APOC Day 4 of 6; Canadian Short Championships. On the Oskahtak map near Edmonton, Canada. Made a bad parallel error on the second control with a trail and could not figure it out for a long time... (about a 18 minute error on that one alone). Another bad day.

Orienteering (Training) 1:01:00 [3] 5.56 km (10:58 / km)
spiked:8/11c

APOC Model Event on Bruderheim map near Edmonton, Canada. Very hot and Peggy and I got there late. I covered about 10 controls sequentially, spiking 8 and going slow most of the time. It was very sandy but with low hills on a 2.5m contour map.

Wednesday Jul 10, 2002 #

Orienteering (Competition) 1:44:41 [4] 8.26 km (12:40 / km)
spiked:6/14c

Warm-up for APOC Day 3 of 6; Asia-Pacific Individual Championships. Had high hopes because this should have been my type of course but lost contact on the way to #1 and #3 running wild. Relocating required going a long way to a fence or road. All-in-all a bad day.

Tuesday Jul 9, 2002 #

Hiking (Day Hike) 20:00 [1] 0.5 mi (39:59 / mi)

Peggy and I took the gondola up out of Banff to eat lunch and take in the view. We were sore from the hike the previous day and needed to rest for APOC. The boarded walkway went to the peak of Sulphur Mountain.

Monday Jul 8, 2002 #

Hiking (Day Hike) 5:30:00 [3] 19.0 km (17:22 / km)
ahr:120

From Castle Campground to Rockbound Lake in Banff National Park. Climbed about 2500ft. mostly on a dirt road with my full camera pack. Upon reaching the first lake, a thunderstorm broke out and it got very chilly. Fortunately Peggy and I planned ahead and had raingear. It was very pretty but might have been nicer if the clouds parted more. We took this day off of the APOC series.

Sunday Jul 7, 2002 #

Running (Trail) 8:00 [2] 1.0 km (8:00 / km)

Warm-up to Start of APOC Day 2; Canadian Championships Day 2 of 2.

APOC Day 2 of 6; Canadian Championships Day 2 of 2. At Mount Laurie (Yamnuska) of Hwy. 1A between Banff and Calgary, Canada. Had lots of trouble on a very technical map. 240m of climb.

Saturday Jul 6, 2002 #

Warm-up for APOC Day 1 in Canada northwest of Cremona, 70 minutes NW of Calgary.

Orienteering (Competition) 1:27:44 [4] 5.79 km (15:09 / km)
spiked:4/15c

APOC - Canadian Championships Day 1 of 2. I had trouble but most others had worse trouble. Finished 6th for the day.

Wednesday Jul 3, 2002 #

Bicycling (Commute) 20:23 [3] 6.2 mi (3:17 / mi)

Bowie to New Carrollton. Hot and humid. 15 sec for TL's. Feel like I hadn't been on the bike much but after warming-up I felt okay and was doing a good pace w/o trying too hard.

Bicycling (Commute) 21:07 [3] 6.2 mi (3:24 / mi)

New Carrollton to Bowie. Very hot & humid. Slight headwind. 51 sec. for TL's.
