Bicycling (Commute) 38:00 [3] 12.1 mi (3:08 / mi)
slept:5.2 weight:188.5lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I dropped the kids off for an overnight outing by car so I got to ride in directly. That got me started late but it was still cool out like yesterday. There was a bit of traffic. I rode alone, but still passed a lot of other riders. I caught one string just as it was entering Georgetown. There were some headwinds from there up to the Jefferson Memorial. Police have begun diverting auto traffic off of Ohio Dr., which was nice for me, but that road isn't that busy until after the Jefferson Memorial anyway.
6 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 42:00 [3] 11.9 mi (3:32 / mi)

From 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C., to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I had a tailwind initially. There was a lot of frenzied traffic--foot, bicycle, and auto. I guess everyone was leaving early for the holiday weekend. I moved okay but in the morning I'd noticed a bit of a wobble in my rear gear cassette. I wondered about the axle being bent. I started having more shifting problems too. I made it home by sticking to some gears that wouldn't rattle. Later I discovered that a needed spacer was missing. The old cassette was for 8 gears and I had bought a 9 gear hub. As I played with the cogs on a stand, there was significant friction so I must have been riding with it going home. Like 2 years ago, I need a nearly complete drive train replacement (front cogs, rear cassette, and chain). My bike is out of commission for a week.

Bicycling (Commute) 43:00 intensity: (10:00 @3) + (33:00 @4) 12.9 mi (3:20 / mi)
slept:4.5 weight:188.5lbs

From Northfield Rd. to Bethesda Elementary School, towing Samantha, with Max riding along on his bike, then to 13th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I was getting rushed starting out. I got a block away when I realized that I'd left my helmet so back down the hill I went to put it on. My legs were a little sore but loosened up after dropping the kids off. It was much cooler; in the 60s F with low humidity. That energized me. For the first few miles on the trail, I rode like in years past, flying down the trail and past other riders. About when I hit the flats, one of the riders I'd passed, passed me back. He was riding a clunker without clip-in pedals but he was strong. We were probably going about 24mph for a while. I dropped off that pace and lost contact. He got ahead a good bit but by the time we got to Georgetown, I was again only 3 seconds behind him. The tailwind we had kept up as I went further down river, but with less effort. Preparations in the parks were underway for the 4th of July weekend.
7 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 47:00 [3] 12.4 mi (3:47 / mi)

From 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C., to Bethesda Elementary School, Bethesda, MD, then to Northfield Rd. I had headwinds getting to Georgetown, then once again it was relatively calm. I kept a steady though saner pace. I took it more easily on the last mile after picking up Samantha's trail-a-bike.

Bicycling (Commute) 44:00 intensity: (32:00 @3) + (12:00 @4) 12.84 mi (3:26 / mi)
slept:5.2 weight:188.5lbs

From Northfield Rd. to Bethesda Elementary School, towing Samantha, with Max riding along on his bike, then to 13th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It was a sticky morning with warm temperatures and dampness from the light rain yesterday. After dropping off the kids and locking up their bikes, I move easily for a while. I slowly picked up the pace but I didn't feel as strong as on Monday. At the trestle bridge, I passed a guy who drafted off of me into Georgetown. I slowed after that and felt a hint of a headwind.

Bicycling (Commute) 47:00 [3] 12.4 mi (3:47 / mi)

From 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C., to Bethesda Elementary School, Bethesda, MD, then to Northfield Rd. I had to stop off to pickup Samantha's trail-a-bike. The ride back was okay. I had nice tailwinds getting to Georgetown again. I didn't feel much help from them after getting to the CCT. I rode alone. My right leg was feeling weaker than my left during the daytime at work. Both were a little sore. My time is estimated but I was about 41 or 42 minutes getting to the school. I made it home just before some thunderstorms let loose.

Bicycling (Commute) 12:00 [3] 2.1 mi (5:43 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:187.5lbs

From Northfield Rd. to Bethesda Elementary School, towing Samantha, with Max riding along on his bike, then back. I had to drop off the kids to catch a bus to summer camp. I was planning on riding downtown straight from the school but I realized I'd forgotten to take a lock along. It's forecast to thunderstorm later so it was probably best that I went home anyway.

Bicycling (Commute) 39:00 intensity: (24:00 @3) + (15:00 @4) 12.1 mi (3:13 / mi)

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I rode comfortably, and felt I was moving well. It was in the 70s F and that felt cool. I still need to make some adjustments for shifting, as the chain was automatically moving to a higher gear when I climbed a few times. Otherwise, the bike rode and looked well (besides a new wheel and tire, I had new shoes and I'd cleaned up the bike over the weekend too). I steadily passed other riders and runners the whole way. I thought I was moving faster but I was riding into headwinds from the south and they might have slowed me. My legs felt a little sore from running yesterday too. I need to do that more often.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 40:30 [3] 11.9 mi (3:24 / mi)

From 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C., to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. It was lightly sprinkling the whole way home. I had a pretty good tailwind getting to Georgetown and after that I didn't feel it any more. I rode alone. There weren't so many people riding. I kept an honest pace without pushing too hard. The new shoes and pedals felt pretty good and were convenient for walking to and from my bike at work.

Running (Trail) 47:00 [2] 4.5 mi (10:27 / mi)

Lake Frank, MD. From Muncaster Mill Rd., It was about 83 F. I'd done a lot of cleaning through the day so I was a little weary of being on my feet at the start. I ran trails first on the east side of the North Branch of Rock Creek, then I crossed over going through the Lathrop E. Smith Center trails. I was moving pretty slowly. I wanted to check how the trails looked to get an idea of how much field checking I'll need to do for QOC to use the area next Winter. I'd mapped this area in 2007. There was a lot of green then, and about the same now, accounting for summer growth. The trails however, seemed to be used less than before. Many were overgrown or intermittent at best. Parts of the ones used more often were puddled. I didn't run with a map so I kind of wandered with a general route in mind. I had a couple of very small sections that I ran off trail to connect trails and cover more ground. It was interesting running through the area and not feeling familiar with a lot of it after having mapped it--I have a good memory for places that I've mapped but my memory of this area had certainly faded. The summer growth probably made it easier to not remember so much. I'll need to adjust a bunch of trails and change the way some of the rock was mapped. I could recognized a few areas having been changed over the years from heavy equipment--probably pipe work. I'd like to get areas north of Muncaster Mill mapped too. That had always been in my plans but I had been waiting for the Intercounty Connector to finish getting built. I have till February to get this done which will be challenging since I have other areas I'd like to update or expand too.

Bicycling (Commute) 50:00 [2] 8.3 mi (6:01 / mi)
slept:7.5 weight:192lbs

After getting a reluctant and hungry Max moving, we had a family ride. I towed Samantha as usual but she did pedal hard every now and then. My bicycle was mostly tuned-up after I'd installed a new rear wheel and replaced the tire. I'd made a few other adjustments too. Everyone but me was hungry. We went from Northfield Rd., to Woodmont Ave., with a stop for dinner at the corner of Woodmont and Elm St.. Afterward, to the Capital Crescent Trail (CCT), to the Little Falls Trail at Massachusetts Ave., to the CCT at Dalecarlia, with a stop on the way for time along the creek, then back up the CCT to River Rd. We stopped for ice cream there, then continued through Kenwood to Bradley Blvd., to Glenwood Rd., to Wilson Rd., to Custer Rd., and to Northfield Rd. It was after sunset (past 9pm) when we arrived home and Max was happy about the replacement light I attached to his bike.

Bicycling (Commute) 38:00 [4] 12.1 mi (3:08 / mi)
slept:4.75 weight:190lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I woke up late again. My alarm didn't go off for some reason. I had more cookies last night so I was okay on skipping breakfast. My neighbor had left a little bit before me--he was just leaving after I returned from dropping off the kids at camp. It took me a few minutes to change my shoes, oil my chain, and get on my bicycle. It was a good thing that I bought new shoes last weekend. The cleats on mine must have broke on my ride home yesterday. I was still able to use the shoes and did because I was in a hurry. I caught my neighbor in the MacArthur Blvd. tunnel amidst a lot of other riders. I was flying past all of them on the top of the trail On the flats, one of the guys I'd just passed me so I drafted off of him until Georgetown. I took over again until we split just after the Kennedy Center. There was a pretty good tailwind but my time riding today wasn't as fast as expected--perhaps I calculated wrong.

Bicycling (Commute) 41:30 [3] 11.9 mi (3:29 / mi)

From 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C., to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. Cruising back with it slightly cooler. I pulled for some other guys; one coming out of Georgetown that I lost going up the bridge at Dalecarlia, and another whom I lost or turned off before crossing River Rd. As I was finishing the last mile, an older guy whom I'd passed at the Bradley Blvd. traffic light caught-up and told me that there was something funny going on with my wheel. I had all but broken a spoke and the wheel was rubbing the brakes. I just thought I was getting tired. When I attempted to fix it at home, even though I'd loosened the opposite spokes, the first spoke I tightened pulled right through the rim, ruining it. That was the best wheel I'd ever had, a Mavic. It was bladed so strong and light and aerodynamic too. I must have ridden 12-15K miles on it and I can barely remember truing it just once before.

Bicycling (Commute) 38:00 [3] 12.1 mi (3:08 / mi)
slept:5.5 weight:189lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. The power went out in the night so I overslept a little. I didn't feel very strong riding. Besides waiting to pass others, I rode alone. There were some headwinds getting to Georgetown, but afterward, the west wind was more in my favor.
6 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 45:30 [3] 11.9 mi (3:49 / mi)

From 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C., to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I started out in a downpour as the tail end of a line of thunderstorms was still running full force. There was little lightening and for some odd reason, the traffic was light leaving the office. I had to gear down to get through the headwind getting to Georgetown. The rain was coming head-on and was a comfortable temperature but it stung at times. My wheel was cutting through the often deep puddles. I couldn't see through them but am familiar enough with the route that I wasn't worried. I did roll over a few manholes. I was under the freeway in Georgetown and emerging on the other side, the rain had just about stopped. I saw a lot of other cyclists whom probably had waited out the rain. I took it easy and was tired.

Bicycling (Commute) 38:00 [3] 12.1 mi (3:08 / mi)
slept:5.5 weight:193lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I was a little later since today was the first day for the kids at their first summer camp. It was a pleasant low humidity morning and the winds felt calm. I caught-up to one guy and drafted for a mile or so before passing and finishing on my own. I felt stronger. I had cookies and milk late last night so my weight was up. My sister and my lack of will power foiled my weight loss once again but it is good recovery food.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 41:00 [3] 11.9 mi (3:27 / mi)

From 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C., to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. There was a good headwind getting to Georgetown, and traffic there, but after that it wasn't too difficult. I did get passed by a few riders today but I caught back up w/2 and ended up passing one of them for good. It was in the 80s F but with not a lot of humidity.
8 PM

Orienteering (Control Pickup) 1:42:00 [2] *** 6.0 km (17:00 / km)

Blockhouse Conservation Park. I went out to pickup controls and the water jug that I had setup out earlier. Immediately, it was getting difficult to see the map in the forest. I did most of the course in a sort of massive memory-O. I also didn't have my eye glasses. It wasn't too bad since I had passed the same direction for most controls on Sunday. I even hit most controls more directly. Eventually, I needed to use the headlamp. I had an underpowered one that we'd gotten for Samantha to use on our last camping trip. I was especially happy about finding the 2 controls that Greg Lennon had unsuccessfully tried to find after the training on Saturday. I found them in the dark because I knew how I'd set them. One of the 2 wasn't accurately placed because of the vegetation and me being rushed toward the end of my setup loop. The other was on a very steep and partly green hillside that didn't induce a lot of will power for people to keep looking. When I ran this night, it was in the 70s and nice out. I saw glimpses of the Strawberry Moon through the trees and better views, past strawberry time, when driving home. I hadn't done a night-o training run in a long time and it was fun.

slept:7.0 weight:190lbs

Father's Day was my excuse. I just had little time given going to visit my dad and sister's gravesites with my mother and other sister. I did get some needed shopping done to replace my cycling shoes--I like my Speedplay pedals but it was too hard finding shoes for them that I could commute w/too so I am going back to SPDs. In the afternoon, I saw Finding Dory with my family including my sister, and friends Bob and Ben. we had dinner together too.

Orienteering (Course Setting) 2:30:01 [3] 8.0 km (18:45 / km)
slept:7.0 weight:191lbs

Blockhouse Conservation Park, MD. I setup for the first Summer Short Series (SSS) training of the summer season. The woods weren't that bad considering it to for all practical purposes, being summer already. The lowlands were the most lush. The point features were needing updates so I field checked some of these loosely and took new way points. I lugged around a gallon of water for the first 3rd of my route too. I missed setting up one control, and being rushed at the end, and back in the lowlands with high grass and thicker vegetation I didn't find some features--my placement was loose and in the general area. Had I a little more time, I would have found the features as some others did.

With rain forecast and my back not feeiing so good. I skipped. Of course, later in the day the rain was all cleared-up. A late dinner the night before with no workout had my weight up and my stomach not feeling so good.

It was a rainy morning and I had to make sure to get home for Max's elementary school graduation. It also happened to be Peggy's and mine anniversary, but that sort of took a back seat for the night.

Bicycling (Commute) 40:00 [3] 12.1 mi (3:18 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:193lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. This morning was one of those days that didn't start out right. It was like my body or some karma was trying to tell me not to ride. I did anyway, exhibiting some willpower to get through various things that didn't go right. I felt slow from the start and just went through the motions. I never got passed but was moving more slowly. There was a slight headwind.
7 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 43:00 [3] 11.9 mi (3:37 / mi)

From 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C., to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I got out of work late. It was nice having the long day. I had a tailwind most of the way. Once in Georgetown, I kept trading leads with another guy. He was stronger and younger, riding on not as nice a bike with old clip-less/cleat-less pedals. His pace kept changing and that's the reason I kept passing him. At one point we all had to stop as a small trail-sized ambulance truck came the other way with siren and lights on. I guess there was a wreck behind us. The other guy finally turned-off at River Rd. and from there I rode more easily with another guy up to Falls Rd.

Bicycling (Commute) 12:00 [3] 1.6 mi (7:30 / mi)
slept:6.25 weight:192.5lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to Folkstone Rd., with Samantha on her trail-a-bike, then back w/o her. Max rode too. Starting out, we had to turn around since Samantha forgot her helmet. We took then took the shorter but hillier route going out, though I turned down one street earlier. It was nice, sunny, cool and breezy.

Bicycling (Commute) 37:45 [4] 12.1 mi (3:07 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:191.5lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I was feeling lazy waking up and contemplated skipping the ride. It seemed to make sense since I was worn-out from racing in the heat yesterday. However, I worked through that and did get myself going. The cool air, dry and in the low 60s F, helped. I also had a pretty good tailwind. I passed people right away when I got on the CCT, and picked-up drafters. I lost some of them at Dalecarlia but picked up more that I took all the way into Georgetown. I was moving with good cadence and just a little tired at the end.
6 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 44:00 [3] 11.9 mi (3:42 / mi)

From 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C., to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I hit traffic leaving the office, carrying my laptop and my regular change of clothes. I also hit headwinds but once past Georgetown Rd., it was better. Approaching River Rd., I hi e

slept:5.5 weight:190.5lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I started slowly but picked-up speed. On the CCT, it was busy. The nice weather yesterday continued this morning. I did get passed just before the River Rd. overpass and as we weaved through other cyclists and pedestrians, I lost contact. I kept pace with the rider, only 30m ahead for a long way but lost him on the flats. My rear light fell off at one point so I had to stop, back up and retrieve it. As I was getting my speed back up, another rider passed me but I kept pace behind him into Georgetown. Along the water I had good tailwinds but the wind wasn't evident in the willow trees there (?). I felt that I've been getting stronger overall.

Bicycling (Commute) 44:00 [3] 11.9 mi (3:42 / mi)

From 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C., to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. Like the day before, I had traffic and headwinds getting to Georgetown. After that the wind wasn't bad. Inside the last mile, I caught one of my neighbors so I rode the last part slowly with him.

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I probably had a slight tailwind. The trail was busy. I caught-up to a guy whom I ended up trading pulls with almost to the Jefferson Memorial. It was cool out; in the upper 50s F and dry. I felt better but still a little tired from the rogaine last Sunday.

Bicycling (Commute) 44:00 [3] 11.9 mi (3:42 / mi)

From 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C., to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I hit traffic leaving my office and there were significant headwinds getting to Georgetown. There was more traffic there. Someone had broken glass again, right at the trailhead to the Capital Crescent Trail (CCT) but I got through safely. The trees and shift in the directions that the trail took me kept the wind down and by the time I got to Bethesda, for some strange reason I had some tailwinds. I did get passed by a trio as I climbed the River Rd. overpass but almost caught one of them again. I felt like I had ridden strong and more quickly than my time indicates.

From Northfield Rd., to the intersection of Norfolk Ave. and Cordell Ave. for lunch, then back a slightly different way to avoid traffic. It was really windy. DVOA PEEC Sprint 1. I had arrived at the site at about 4:15 and was on the course by 4:45, just before it was to close. Rain had started to fall relatively hard; it had been dry earlier. I discovered that I had left my running shorts at home so I ran with the shorts I had driven up with, adding gaitors and changing my shoes/shirt. My glasses did fog and I was a bit stiff after the 5 hour drive. Right away I had made a mistake with the wrong bearing for #1. I corrected okay. My I hesitated but went cleanly to #2 and most of the subsequent controls. My routes weren't always efficient and I only made one other real error going the wrong direction after rounding a cabin. That only lost me 30 seconds or so. I finished just before the course closed for dinner.

From 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C., to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I ran into traffic lights early-on but after that I had a good tailwind most of the way home. The slowdowns were in getting through Georgetown, and waiting to pass other riders. I did get passed on the flats by 2 people but I stayed with the second before passing him and eventually dropping him.
