Note
slept:8.0 weight:177lbs (injured) (rest day)

I was busy throughout the day and with it being hot, then rainy out too it made sense to take some rest. I did feel okay though, like I should have run or done some exercise.

Orienteering (Field Checking) 4:30:00 [1] 7.0 mi (38:34 / mi)
(injured)

Muddy Branch Park, Gaithersburg, MD. I started field checking a new map today. Timing hadn't worked for me to do much field checking so far this year but I managed it today. As usual, I had high hopes of covering a great swath of this narrow park in one fell swoop. As usual, I did less than half of what I'd wanted to do. I started with some easy school and recreational sports park grounds that I thought might make a good place to meet for a Summer Short Series training event. Moving between suburbia, I made my way into the wider Muddy Branch section that has the really nice open Great Falls-like woods. I was hampered by not having all of the trails already on the map. This made it harder to pinpoint some features. I found a lot more features and trails than I'd seen before when running the long Muddy Branch Trail. The woods were just as beautiful as I remembered them--perhaps more so. Some deadfall from the derecho storm (almost exactly a year ago), made following straight lines harder but this actually added some nice complexity to navigating the area. It also took me longer to record. I only mapped the largest root stocks. There were some nice ditch complexes and a few rock features. I stayed on the southeast side of the main stream but I did cover a lot of ground. I was pretty tired from cycling a lot this week, but also from not having any water or food with me. When trying to take a downhill few strides, I could run slowly; my pulled muscle fiber near my hamstring still hurt. I wondered how I'd get through a ROGAINE feeling like that. It was in the upper 80s with a strong sun by the time I left. I'd like to use this area for a training event this summer but I'll need to get back for at least one more day of checking before I'll have enough. One negative and part of what attracted me to the area was that I hadn't earlier seen any wavy-leaf basket grass but I did see some areas today where it's already starting to take over. In another 2 years, it could cover the area completely; it grows wherever the soil gets enough moisture and it doesn't need a lot.

Bicycling (Commute) 37:29 intensity: (17:29 @3) + (20:00 @4) 12.1 mi (3:06 / mi)
slept:5.5 weight:180lbs (injured)

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 12th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I gambled against storms forecasts as I'd done almost all week and rode it, still tired. There weren't a lot of cyclists out. There were some vehicles on the CCT. I rode alone. There were some headwinds along the water after Georgetown.
1 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 41:00 intensity: (26:00 @3) + (15:00 @4) 11.9 mi (3:27 / mi)
(injured)

From 12th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I rushed everything all day at work, skipping lunch and cutting out meetings but I was still late leaving at this earlier than usual hour. I was hurrying to get home so that Peggy and I could go pickup Max from camp where he's been all week. Peggy had to leave w/o me so that she wouldn't be late. I ended up driving separately and getting there a little after Peggy did; we had a nice evening in Annapolis afterward. On my bicycle ride, I rushed too but I had to pace myself. It was hot. I at least had favorable winds sometimes pretty nice, for most of the way. Few people were out in the middle of the day but those that were tended to be bunches of recreational riders who were slower than commuters and less aware of trail etiquettes. I left my cycle computer at work by mistake and timed manually.

Bicycling (Commute) 38:02 [3] 12.1 mi (3:09 / mi)
slept:5.4 weight:179.5lbs (injured)

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 12th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It was a quiet ride with few people on the trail. The construction and one way traffic on the trestle bridge has ended. I was tired. I kept a steady pace and rode through some strong headwinds after Georgetown.
6 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 41:31 [3] 11.9 mi (3:29 / mi)
(injured)

From C St., SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. One would have thought that a holiday was coming up given all of the traffic leaving town. After the stoplight at Main Ave., I was pacing a guy toward the Jefferson Memorial. Cars and a van ahead were preventing us from riding forward much but the other guy who was on my left snuck between lanes to get around the van that had been held up by other cars. As he went around traffic started moving so he cut off the van. I had waited but while doing so, I could see that it was a police van. The van moved out jerkily as soon as it could and I thought he was trying to catch up to the cyclist to give him a ticket. Nothing happened. I had some later traffic but chased a bus for half of Ohio Dr. This cut down on some headwinds getting to Georgetown, but after Georgetown, the winds were at my back. I still managed to ride more slowly, not being in shape to ride well all week yet.

Bicycling (Commute) 36:44 [3] 12.1 mi (3:02 / mi)
slept:5.8 weight:178.5lbs (injured)

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 12th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It started out cooler than yesterday, due to the rains last night. My legs were a little tired starting out so I took it easier the first mile and a half. I rode alone most of the way before picking up a rider in my draft when approaching the flats. He stayed w/me until Georgetown. There were a few times when there were slight headwinds but mostly the winds were neutral.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 41:22 [3] 11.9 mi (3:29 / mi)
(injured)

From C St., SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I left work only a little bit past putting in my time so that I could both beat the storms and get home in time for a farewell dinner with neighbors who are moving. It was a pretty quiet ride with not as much traffic as the later hours when I usually ride. There were some headwinds and feeling tired, I didn't push the pace much.

Bicycling (Commute) 38:19 [3] 12.1 mi (3:10 / mi)
slept:5.7 weight:179.5lbs (injured)

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 12th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I felt a little more tired compared to my ride yesterday; I had to work harder. Perhaps it was because the southern headwind was more prominent. It was a relatively quiet ride with fewer people and more of DC's humidity. Going over a speed hump on Glenbrook Rd. I had stood up on the pedals but with my knees bent and my legs absorbing the shock, it was enough to sharply remind me that my left ham was injured.

Bicycling (Commute) 41:08 [3] 11.9 mi (3:27 / mi)
(injured)

From C St., SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I left work feeling tired. There were headwinds up until I reached the Kennedy Center, then again in a few places. Turning past Dalecarlia however I had a tailwind. I led a group of riders out of Georgetown for over a mile before one passed in a hurry and took two others with him. I just kept my pace, not wanting to push too hard. There were a lot of cyclist out and I caught the 3 who'd passed. I took a long turn leading again before one zoomed up the hill at River Rd. He slowed again so I passed again. For the last half mile, I caught up to and rode home easy with a neighbor who rides a very similar commute route. There are a lot of cyclists in my neighborhood. My next door neighbor just completed a double century riding with 5 other from close by, and there were about 30 others from the general neighborhood who rode it too.

Bicycling (Commute) 37:22 [3] 12.1 mi (3:05 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:181.5lbs (injured)

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 12th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. With Max off to overnight summer camp, I got to go straight to work. I did have to take it easy. I found that when I tried to push, the muscle fiber that I pulled on Saturday would hurt sharply--most injuries that I've had from running hadn't carried over into cycling. I tried to keep a fairly steady pace, accelerating slowly and dropping the pace on uphill grades. Despite this, I got moving pretty well (23-24mph down the grade), and I passed and pulled several cyclist along the busy trail. I got a little help on the flats after Fletcher's Boathouse; that rider dropped off afterward. I got some more help from a guy kicking it up to 23mph for almost the last mile into Georgetown. There were some headwinds out of the south afterward, along the water.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 40:57 [3] 11.9 mi (3:26 / mi)
(injured)

From C St., SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. Storms passed north and south of DC with only a little dampness where I was starting from. However the air was much cooler than the 90 F with bright sun and humidity that there was at lunch time (I'd walked at lunch along The Mall watching the preparations go up for the Smithsonian Folklife Festival and they looked pretty interesting). Starting out, winds from the west seemed to make me work a bit. I kept a good cadence and geared down on steeper grades. There was a bit of a tailwind after Dalecarlia. A fairly steady number of cyclists were out but the number and city in general seemed to clearly be in vacation mode.

Orienteering (Foot) 30:44 intensity: (14:07 @0) + (16:37 @5) 2.31 mi (13:18 / mi) +30m 12:47 / mi
slept:6.0 weight:178.5lbs (injured)

QOC Summer Short Series in Greenbelt Park. Peggy setup a sprint training exercise with a bunch of 400-500m courses in an open but sloped field (Sweetgum Area). I was partnered with Ted Good. Teams were to relay from course to course in a mass start with everyone to start on different courses. This was training, not a race. We were each to do 5-7 loops. Some did 5 while some did 10 and a White course afterward (Max did this exclusively and all on his own with no shadowing for the first time while everyone else was running--this was fitting since Greenbelt Park is the first park we ever brought him to for orienteering). Competitiveness emerged as some would try to outsprint others if they were finishing their loop near each other. I ran pretty well, loosening-up after my first loop, and running smoothly on later ones. I felt some sprinting strength from recent cycling training. I was hitting controls very well too. However, on my 7th loop, I was cruising to my second control on a more or less level leg. There were some slight bumps and holes but none very big. I guess my legs had had enough because as I was trying to be efficient and open up my stride, on one of these I felt a pang of pain. I pulled a muscle fiber in my left hamstring area. I slowed-up a lot, finished my loop, and then was done. When Peggy saw me finishing-up, she figured I'd gone into my tired old man trod, not knowing that I didn't want to injure myself more. I don't think this will be a long injury but it smarts pretty well and I hadn't had a pull in this area in decades, or maybe never. A good portion of the group had a nice relaxing dinner afterward.

slept:6.1 weight:176.5lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to Huntington Pkwy. while Max walked along, then to 12th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It was cool again this morning; around 60 F. There were some traffic areas due to construction on the Capital Crescent Trail and a healthy number of cyclists. I was kind of tired today so I took it easier. I got caught from behind and got help the last few miles into Georgetown from a guy pulling 2 panniers doing +23mph. The winds were neutral.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 40:05 intensity: (2:00 @2) + (35:05 @3) + (3:00 @4) 11.9 mi (3:22 / mi)

From C St., SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I took it easier for most of the ride and my calves were a bit crampy in the later parts of the ride. The winds seemed to be neutral again. In Georgetown, there was a lot of traffic from what appeared to be a movie premier. Police had to block parts of Water St. because of a crowd of people and television cameras. I got around this using the trail in the waterfront park. I pulled a guy for a while on the flat parts of the CCT, and he did more than return the favor, kicking us up to +21mph on the flats. He turned off at Fletcher's Boathouse to ride the towpath. I rode alone the rest of the way but had to negotiate a lot of cycling traffic with almost stops and starts.

Bicycling (Commute) 6:03 [3] 1.4 mi (4:19 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:178.5lbs

From Northfield Rd. to the Bethesda Metro station. The sun was strong this morning and I felt warmer than expected in my work clothes.
7 PM

Running (Street & Trail) 50:19 [3] 6.3 mi (7:59 / mi)

From the Silver Spring Metro Station, Colesville Rd., to N. Portal Dr. to E. Beach Dr. to Kalmia Rd., to Beach Dr., to the Valley Trail in Rock Creek Park, to Candycane Park via the paved Rock Creek Trail, to Ellingson Dr. to the Georgetown Branch Trail via Susannah Ln. to Woodmont Ave. in Bethesda, to Edgemoor Ln. to the Bethesda Metro Station. I felt sleepy tired starting out. However the first mile was downhill and I did it in 7:25. On the dirt I stuck to the Valley Trail since I anticipated muddy footing on the smaller side paths. I moved slowly, taking a bathroom break and Candycane Park. My legs just felt heavy from cycling, with not much follow-through on my stride. I measured another mile on the Georgetown Branch Trail, on an uphill grade and found that I'd slowed to 8:12 pace. Callus on my right foot hurt and I was surprised at how quickly it comes back.
8 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 6:03 [3] 1.41 mi (4:17 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro Station to Northfield Rd. This felt refreshingly cool and served as a nice warm-down.

Bicycling (Commute) 39:00 intensity: (4:00 @1) + (35:00 @4) 12.1 mi (3:13 / mi)
slept:4.5 weight:179lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to Huntington Pkwy. while Max walked along, then to 12th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. After dropping Max off at a bus stop I again got moving rather quickly. This time 3 guys were turning down Glenbrook Rd. just behind me as I was getting on it so I moved out. I again felt pretty good. I lost them but as I got onto the CCT, there were two other fast riders just ahead of me. I sat on them for a while and traded pulls before losing them going down past Dalecarlia. I must have had some tailwind but reaching the flatter ground, that wasn't the case. I slowed to 21-22mph and worked at it. The winds turned out to be coming from the east after passing Georgetown. I slowed more. There were an unusual number of bicycle police roaming around the Tidal Basin - 3 pairs. I almost never see any. Police were blocking a lane on 14th Street.
7 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 41:22 intensity: (2:22 @2) + (39:00 @4) 11.72 mi (3:32 / mi)

From 12th St & Independence Ave., SW, in Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I left work late so I first had to ride through the courtyard and the building. I got moving quickly on Independence Ave. jumping up to 28mph briefly amongst the cars and buses. As I was getting through traffic in Georgetown, two guys got ahead. I tailed them briefly on the CCT, then pulled for one who stayed on up until Falls Rd. I was tired and moved slower finishing up.

5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 4:30 [2] 0.45 mi (10:00 / mi)

From Northfield Rd., I rode up to Huntington Pkwy. with Max's bike to meet him after camp, then we rode back together.
11 PM

Running (Street & Trail) 16:47 intensity: (8:47 @3) + (8:00 @4) 2.2 mi (7:38 / mi)
weight:180lbs

From Northfield Rd. I ran up to Custer Rd., to Old Georgetown Pike, Maple Ridge Rd. to the Bethesda Trolley Trail, on the NIH grounds, to Exeter Rd. to Wilson La., to Custer Rd. to Northfield Rd. This was the reverse of the route that I usually do - I had to drop off some mail. I was pretty tired going just before midnight. There seems to be a bunny population explosion too.

Bicycling (Commute) 41:14 intensity: (4:30 @1) + (10:00 @3) + (26:44 @4) 11.41 mi (3:37 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:180lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to Huntington Pkwy. while Max walked along, then to 12th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. After dropping Max off at a bus stop for his first day of summer camp, I got moving rather quickly. A guy had turned down Glenbrook Rd. just behind me as I was getting on it so I was feeling like I needed to move. I also happened to be feeling pretty good. He caught me at a light but I lost him eventually on the CCT. There were lots of other cyclists out so I had to do a lot of passing. I did slow a little on the flatter ground after Fletcher's Boathouse but only to 21mph. In Georgetown, I started noticing a slow leak on my rear tire. I tried in vain to make it to work without it going flat, even shortening the route by following Independence Ave. straight up instead of rounding the Jefferson Memorial as usual. I stood up and leaned on my front handle bars to get over bumps but essentially the last mile I was riding a flat :(
6 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 37:00 [3] 11.6 mi (3:11 / mi)

From 15th St., SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I rushed to get out of the courtyard where I park my bike at work, just before 6pm when they lock the gate. It happened to be raining hard at the time and I just made it, with the guard having to open it again just before he was about to latch it. I had intended to get out earlier so I could change my flat tire from earlier in the morning. I had a spare tube and patches but didn't have my tire iron. I used the quick release to change that but then I discovered that my pump was missing off of the frame. I think it either fell off or got left at home when I'd taken it off for repairs at a store. I proceeded to change the tube anyway while all the while it was pouring. Another cyclists who passed by gave me an "awwwwe," The thought occurred to me that this kind of situation is good for the soul. I had to figure out how to get home and like camping in the winter, I'd get a chance to feel how those less well off do. The metro train was an option if I chose to wait an hour and take the easy way out. I preferred, to see if I could get some help from a stranger. I hiked over to 15th and Main Ave. where a lot of cyclist pass by and get stopped at a traffic light. Before I'd gotten there, I was able to flag down a rider--the first I tried and he very willingly let me borrow his pump (a nice old Zefal pump too). Though cyclists tend to feel community toward one another, it was still nice to get the affirmation that there are nice people out there. Once I got going, the rain stopped; it was completely dry before I reached Georgetown as the rain that hit me never got there.

Running 54:31 intensity: (40:31 @2) + (14:00 @3) 5.09 mi (10:43 / mi) +158m 9:46 / mi

From Seven Locks Rd. at a community pool where Max was enjoying a birthday party, Peggy and I got to go for a rare run together through Cabin John Park. We headed south until River Rd., then turned back. On the return trip we tried a few side trails. Some of these were dead ends going up to houses but one on the section between Bradley Rd. and Seven Locks Rd., did loop back. With all of the dead ends and loops, we ended up passing on other slower running couple with their dog, 3 times. It was nice to get out running again. Having filed my calluses, they didn't hurt. My right hamstring was sore from lunging when playing badminton the other day.

Other (Badmiton) 1:00:00 [3]

We had a block party yesterday and I played several games of badminton at a neighbors house. It's often derided as a wimpy sport but if you play it competitively, it is a challenging cross between tennis and table tennis. It was fun too. I was hitting most of the long shots pretty well but wiffed a few that were close to me and seemed easy; my eyes aren't what they used to be.

Friday Jun 14, 2013 #

Bicycling (Commute) 26:40 [1] 3.3 mi (8:05 / mi)

From Northfield Rd., to Woodmont Ave. with Peggy on her bike, then back. With Max at a sleepover, Peggy and I had a rare night out together. We rode in the dark in both directions and it was a rare crisp feeling evening for June.

Bicycling (Commute) 7:25 intensity: (5:35 @2) + (1:50 @3) 1.45 mi (5:07 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro Station, to Arlington Rd. to pickup Max's bike, then to Northfield Rd. It was much warmer coming home. I didn't get to run toward home after work as planned so carrying my backpack just added to me feeling sweaty in my work clothes.

Bicycling (Commute) 37:01 intensity: (3:00 @3) + (34:01 @4) 12.1 mi (3:04 / mi)

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD with Max on his bike, then to 12th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It was wet on the ground and humid but that got better the further I went. I got onto Glenbrook Dr. just after another rider so I got moving faster after passing him. I must have had a tailwind. I was cruising at 23mph down the grade but I did put some effort into it. At the trestle bridge construction, I caught another fast rider but passed him immediately; I pulled for him on into Georgetown while passing a lot of other cyclists. I slowed a little after the Jefferson Memorial with some auto traffic.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 41:56 intensity: (9:56 @3) + (32:00 @4) 11.9 mi (3:31 / mi)

From C St., SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I had an errand to do after work so I made a point of leaving close to on-time. There were somewhat mixed winds but mostly they were headwinds. I moved well up through Dalecarlia Reservoir. A guy I had caught and had pulled a while took over there, pulling me up to Dorsett Rd.; I was tired but there was also just too much traffic for me to alternate more with him.

From Northfield Rd., Greenwich Park, to Old Georgetown Rd. to Beech Dr. N. Bethesda Middle School to Bradmore Dr. to McKinley St. to Garfield St., to Roosevelt St., to the trail at Jefferson St. to Northfield Rd. It was raining lightly while starting out. Later it came down heavily but only for a little while. I ran in my old running shoes. Callus on my right foot bothered me again when starting but it was better later. It was very humid and warm so I sweat a lot.

From Northfield Rd. to Georgetown, Washington, D.C., via the Capital Crescent Trail, up to the C&O Towpath, up to Key bridge, into Rosslyn, VA, onto the Custis Trail, to North Glebe Rd., to 16th St, to Arlington Hospital. There were headwinds going into DC, but they helped me climb out of Rosslyn and I pushed that part. It was about 80 F and humid. My right forearm was sore from laying pavers and pounding them into place earlier.
7 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 38:59 intensity: (26:59 @3) + (12:00 @4) 10.6 mi (3:41 / mi)

From Arlington Hospital (Virginia Hospital Center), Virginia, George Mason Rd to Yorktown Rd, to N. Glebe Rd, to Chain Bridge, onto the C&O Canal Towpath, to Lock 6, then the loopy way to Brookemont, to the Capital Crescent Trail, to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. The ride was intense getting to Chain Bridge with the hills and tailwind. The towpath had been re-surfaced not long back (still gravel), so it was smoother and fast. The climb up to Brookemont tired me so the last part I went easier.

Bicycling (Trail) 1:18:00 [2] 8.0 mi (9:45 / mi)

From the Lake Frank parking off of Avery Rd., to the Rock Creek Trail, via the Lake Frank dam, then north to Lake Needwood, around the lake counterclockwise, then back. I rode with Max and his friend Alice while other QOC people were doing a compass and pace training exercise setup by David Onkst. The temperatures were warmer and more humid than I'm used to but nothing like the summer heat that will come. A nice breeze was going so it was really nice in the shade. I ran into Amber and Sarah at Lake Needwood--they'd gone to the wrong location for the training. I think running would have been better for me; either running the training or along side of Max and Alice, though I wasn't sure before going whether or not I'd be able to keep up with Max and Alice on bicycle while I was running. Earlier in the day I was doing some masonry work so I was already a little tired.

In Arlington, I ran along some streets and trails that I hadn't run down in a couple of decades; an old hangout from the 80s. My run was in steady rain the whole way. I enjoyed being able to run downhill after work for once since most of my commute runs are running uphill toward Bethesda. I was running with a full pack and that slowed me, despite the negative elevation. There were plenty of cyclists riding in the rain, and a few other runners too. The sidewalk in Georgetown was busy. I dripped puddles on the metro train afterward, drew stares, and cleared out people around me. On the metro train, there were also 4 wet cyclists and their bikes; the most I'd seen at one time.

Bicycling (Commute) 8:00 [2] 1.45 mi (5:31 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro Station, to Arlington Rd. to pickup Max's bike, then to Northfield Rd. Having cooled-off from running, I realized how much strain running with the extra weight was. My calves were dead going up the escalator. I was glad that it was still not cold riding home since the rain was going steadily. With wet brakes, I had to go slower to be safe.

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD with Max on his bike, then to 12th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. After leaving Bethesda, things went fast. I was easily hitting 24 mph so I figured there must be a tailwind. I almost caught up to a guy who I kept seeing all the way to Georgetown but I didn't try too hard for fear of wearing myself out. He slowly pulled away, especially when after the Dalecarlia reservoir and the water treatment plant, I headed more into the east. A headwind was coming from the east but it wasn't bad. The temperatures were cool and comfortable.

Bicycling (Commute) 45:16 [3] 12.2 mi (3:43 / mi)

From 12th St & Independence Ave., SW, in Washington, D.C. to Arlington Rd., Bethesda, MD to pick-up Max's bicycle, then to Northfield Rd. I left work late so I first had to ride through the courtyard and the building. I moved fast on Independence Ave. I was still quick but more steady through Georgetown, and on the Capital Crescent Trail. Winds were mostly coming from behind me. It was more or less dark when I got home, just before 9pm.

Washington, D.C. From 14th & Independence Ave., SW, down The Mall along Independence Ave. and the Reflecting Pool to the Lincoln Memorial, to Ohio Dr. to the Rock Creek Trail, to Calvert St., to the Woodley Park/Zoo Metro Station. It was about 79 F after the rain storms but things were drying-up. I felt soreness in my quads initially which was odd given how little I'd been running lately. This went away. I felt pretty heavy both in body, and in my legs from cycling. The national condom wrapping was going up over the scaffolding on the Washington Monument. I was fairly slow going up the hill at the end.
