Bicycling (Commute) 11:00 [3] 2.1 mi (5:14 / mi)
slept:6.25 weight:175lbs (sick)

From Northfield Rd. to Ayrlawn Park and back using the trail-a-bike to drop off Max. I still felt a bit tired. I was very lethargic, especially going up hills with Max. I attribute this to being sick.
8 AM

Bicycling (Commute) 38:08 [3] 12.03 mi (3:10 / mi)
(sick)

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. After dropping off Max, I switched over to my road bike. My lethargy continued. I took it easy most of the time, passing a normal number of people but rode alone. It was a cool morning with a tailwind along the water coming from the NE. Going home could be a grind. At home, I had packed my black shoes for work but in the closet darkness, I grabbed 2 lefts--one new and one the same exact style but older--oops! At least I can sit in my office most of the time. Right now, I'm chilled and shivering.

Bicycling (Commute) 11:37 [3] 2.1 mi (5:32 / mi)
slept:4.75 weight:176.5lbs

From Northfield Rd. to Ayrlawn Park and back using the trail-a-bike to drop off Max. I still felt a bit tired.
8 AM

Bicycling (Commute) 36:04 intensity: (18:04 @3) + (18:00 @4) 12.13 mi (2:58 / mi)

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. After dropping off Max, I switched over to my road bike. It was a speedy morning with fast company just after River Rd. There was some sharing of leads on a pace line and through some maintenance with trucks on the trail, then after MacArthur Blvd., it got faster. One withered looking guy zipped by at 26mph and got us to 27mph at times before slowing to 23mph on the flats. Of course a tailwind (from the west?) helped. I'm getting a bit of a summer cold.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 42:13 [4] 11.85 mi (3:34 / mi)
(sick)

From 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I had to pay for the tailwind in the morning by going against it on the way home. It wasn't so bad but with already being tired and pushing the pace more than I should, it was not so fun. I did pull a few other guys up the grade to Bethesda. My cold is worsening. After getting home, Max, Peggy, Bob Angel and I watched a fireworks show in our old neighborhood from Lynbrook Park.

slept:5.5 weight:176.5lbs

From Northfield Rd. to Ayrlawn Park and back using the trail-a-bike to drop off Max. The weather was not bad but already feeling humid. A bunny rabbit raced us for a way and won. I felt rather stiff.

Running (Street & Trail) 10:43 [2] 0.97 mi (11:03 / mi)
ahr:143 max:153 slept:6.75 (injured)

Warm-up jog to the start of the WPOC Keystone Capers at Keystone Park, PA. I had much more time to get ready today. I also felt rather sore starting off. This was from the race yesterday and not having run much the last few weeks.
9 AM

Orienteering race (Foot) 1:13:27 [4] *** 7.4 km (9:56 / km)
ahr:155 max:191 spiked:12/16c (injured)

WPOC: Keystone Capers at Keystone Park, PA. The course today was much more off-trail but still not very technical. I felt better running and executed routes much better. I still made some small errors including the last 2 controls before the Go control. I got through the course without aggrivating my left calf too much. I was fairly tight afterward. I enjoyed Tom Overbaugh's course and spending some time by the lake afterward.

Running (Street & Trail) 5:00 [3] 0.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
slept:7.5 (injured)

Deer Lakes Parks, PA. Warm-up jog from the parking lot to the start. I had left the parking lot in a bit of a rush after a harried morning.

Orienteering race (Foot) 1:25:07 [3] *** 7.9 km (10:46 / km) +275m 9:11 / km
spiked:12/15c (injured)

WPOC: Keystone Capers at Deer Lakes Park, PA. I had good hopes last week with my training starting to come together in early June but the last week and a half have been busy with filling other aspects of life. This showed on the course today. My running was uninspired and my map reading inconsistent. The courses only required a low degree of technical skill. I messed up early going to #3 before #2 and getting confused in the process. Rushing before the start had me I'll prepared. I usually tape my laces but in the rush, I didn't today and had to tie the on the way to #4. In the circle at #4, I didn't like the mapping; it contributed to a 5 minute error. The rootstock the control was on there was below standard while a much larger one above it in the same reentrant was left off. The control could of been on the wrong rootstock and was hidden by some green on my first attack. I ran some legs well enough like to #6, #7, & #12. I lost a few seconds here and there like at #14 when my first impression was to look low but I knew it'd be higher when I got close. The best thing to take away was that my achilles/calf injury did not resurface with inflammation during or after the run.

Hiking (Foot) 1:22:00 [1] 1.75 mi (46:52 / mi)
slept:7.5 (injured)

Ohiopyle, PA. After visiting and touring Falling Water, the house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and after eating lunch, Peggy, Max, and I hiked the Ferncliff Trail from the old Train Station Visitor Center. Going clockwise, much of the early part was damp but it had great views. The trail map was wrong or out of date so when Peggy took the high fork and Max and I stayed low, we had trouble hooking up again. Falling Water was really nice to see and even Max stayed captivated through the end.

Other (Rafting) 2:34:00 [2] 8.1 mi (19:01 / mi)
slept:4.5 (injured)

Ohiopyle, PA. Peggy, Max, and I paddled the Middle Youghiogheny River from Confluence to Ohiopyle. This was a Class I rapid section run. We did not use a guide and only got stuck on rocks a few times. The 1st third and last third moved along well but the middle third had a lot of dead water and headwinds. I paddled a lot. Instead of taking 4 hours as advertised, it went much quicker but we didn't stop to swim and we ate before starting.

Swimming (Other) 1:00:00 [2]
slept:7.0 (injured)

Rehoboth, DE. I spent a couple of hours at the beach with Peggy and Max. Later, we went to jungle Jim's water park moving our way through the lazy river and up and down the slides. I also did a rope walk across floats like I was in a Japanese game show. I would have enjoyed a more robust workout on bicycle but spending time with family is needed and good too.

Bicycling (Commute) 32:00 [3] 6.05 mi (5:17 / mi)
slept:6.5 weight:174lbs (injured)

From Northfield Rd., to Jefferson St. to Garfield St. to Greentree Rd. to Fernwood Rd. to Democracy Blvd. to the Cabin John Trail, to Tuckerman Ln. Riding my mountain bike, I rod to Cabing John Regional Park to setup for the first QOC Summer Short Series event. I carried controls in a backpack and moved well on the roads and sidewalks. Going through the park on the dirt Cabin John Trail was just to make it fun. I hadn't done single track for a while. Before going, I should have checked-out my mountain bike. The chain was rusty from when I rode my mountain bike last winter on salted roads. I did oil it before going and it held up okay. I could have used some gear tuning. Front derailer shifting just didn't occur. My handlebar grips were awful too--they were sticky like the rubber was melting and a residue kept coming off.

Bicycling (Course Setting) 1:49:58 intensity: (1:00:00 @2) + (49:58 @3) ** 4.55 mi (24:10 / mi)
spiked:15/15c (injured)

Cabin John Regional Park, MD. Starting from Tuckerman Ln., I got onto the Cabin John Trail and headed north, along the west side of the creek. The park on the west side of the creek is so narrow that I was able to just about ride up to all the control locations. However, a few times I did have to dismount, hide the mountain bicyicle, and then run to the control location. I was able to get up and down the hills pretty well. I also got over the rocky and veggie parts well. The deteriorating hand grips made it more awkward to hold the map as any direct contact with the hand grips came off of me and onto the map case making that illegible. The woods were fairly thick in places; a lot different than they were in the winter. After finishing-up the west side if the creek, I crossed and turned back to finish the eastern part. That was much easier.
5 PM

Bicycling (Control Pickup) 34:15 [3] *** 3.25 mi (10:32 / mi)
spiked:3/3c (injured)

Cabin John Regional Park, MD. From the playground area on the east side of Tuckerman Ln., I went to the far north of the park to get 3 controls. I was riding faster than earlier since I didn't need to stop a lot. At one tree trunk that I had ridden over before, I hit it incorrectly. I sent my bike twisting to the ground but I managed to get a foot down and land upright. However, this either put a slow leak in my tire or somehow managed to get a just a significant amount out. I thought I'd have to start walking soon but it held-up. Several others helped pickup controls so that made for an easy day. By doing nearly all the course setting and pickup work today on bicycle, I had hoped to not feel me left calf afterward but unfortunately, there was some pain felt.

Though humid, the training was a success. About 18 people came with about equal numbers doing short and long courses. No one seemed to detect my ruse by having two short and two long couses. This was just to add some confusion and make people pay attention to their own map. Confusion had been aided by the thick woods and the coninciding of a local hasher group running the same sections of the park. Eddie Bergeron told me that his northernmost control on a sandbar in the creek path was hopping with about 20 runners looking for a hash mark. A large group went over to the Corner Bakery afterward for dinner.

Bicycling (Rollers) 30:11 [3]
slept:7.5 weight:175lbs (injured)

I had the day off because Max is out of school and summer camps have not started. I didn't get much done but felt busy. In the evening, Peggy and I got to celebrate our anniversary more properly by going to DC for dinner and to see the Capital Steps--they were really hilarious! Afterward, I turned a fan on and got on the rollers while watching a movie. I was spinning faster and stronger than in the winter.

Bicycling (Commute) 37:39 [3] 12.0 mi (3:08 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:176.5lbs (injured)

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. With sleeping-in a bit, changing a load of laundry, and getting Max ready for yet another fun school activity, I was getting a bit late this morning so I got Max on the bus and road my road bike. A north tail wind was still blowing but it was less pronounced. The air was in the low 60's F and crisp feeling. I spun pretty well but still felt tired.
6 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 49:21 [3] 12.54 mi (3:56 / mi)
(injured)

From 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to the Rock Creek Trail, to Porter St. to Wisconsin Ave. to Old Georgetown Rd., to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I had some errands to do so I rode through town instead of around it like I usually do. It was steep coming out of Rock Creek to the top of DC. On Wisconsin Ave., I felt like I was doing sprints to keep pace with car traffic in between traffic lights. I was on my road bike and this was a blessing. I accelerated well each time and I was passing cars stuck in the left lanes much of the time. Beach Dr. in Rock Creek was pretty busy so I decided to stay on the trail there. It wasn't as bumpy on my road bike as I had feared but it got worse after passing the zoo. Wisconsin Ave. had some bumpy parts too.

Bicycling (Commute) 42:04 intensity: (35:04 @3) + (7:00 @4)
slept:4.0 weight:176.5lbs (injured)

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to Arlington Ave. with Max on his trail-a-bike, then to 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. The cool winds from the nort continued so I got a tailwind most of the way. Additionally, as I got onto the Capital Crescent Trail, another guy going about my speed was just ahead. Once I caught him, our pace increased. We traded pulls until he had to stop due to a slow leaking rear tire. Yesterday, sometime in between my two rides a tree had fallen over the path and I had to walk and duck under it to get past. Today, a tree trimming truck was working in a totally different place, and a second tree had fallen and blocked the path about 8 feet from the first.
6 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 48:30 [3] 12.23 mi (3:58 / mi)
(injured)

From 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Arlington Rd. to pickup Max's trail-a-bike, then to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. The headwinds were strong again getting to Georgetown. Once past that it was much better but I was feeling the cummulative effects of increased commuting. I find it interesting and I've noted it several times before, that my total time commuting can be extremely close the commuting time for the day before. It was just a few seconds off each way yesterday despite some differences in conditions. I don't actively watch the clock on commute rides and usually just view the distance mode. To me it's evidence of another sort of internal clocking. Other research I've come across has found evidence of internal sleep clocks.

Bicycling (Commute) 42:22 [3] 12.41 mi (3:25 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:177.5lbs (injured)

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to Arlington Ave. with Max on his trail-a-bike, then to 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It was almost chilly starting out. Max got a little cold wearing shorts. I felt okay after riding longer the other day. A tailwind from the north somewhere was swirling but mostly it provided help.
6 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 48:40 [3] 12.23 mi (3:59 / mi)
(injured)

From 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Arlington Rd. to pickup Max's trail-a-bike, then to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. Leaving work, I moved quickly until rounding the Jefferson Memorial and heading into the winds all the way home. The weather was rather cool for this time of year and thus quite nice.

Bicycling (Road) 2:08:00 [3] 36.97 mi (3:28 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:177.5lbs (injured)

From Blockhouse Conservation Park, River Rd. to Montevideo Rd. to Sugarland Rd. to White Ground Rd. to Barnesville Rd. (Boyds) to Slidell Rd. to Comus Rd. to Peach Tree Rd. Darnestown Rd. to Cattail Rd. to Whites Ferry Rd. (Poolesville), to W. Willard Rd. to River Rd. to Blockhouse Conservation Park. I tuned my bike the night before and it road well. I got a fairly early start and beat the heat. The humidity was 87% at that time but with it being in the 70's F, it didn't feel bad at all. I had expected this route to have changed due to development. The last time I did it must have been close to 9 years back. However, it was just as beautiful as before and because it was surprising, I appreciated it all that much more. There was slightly more in Poolesville than before including a benefit race where I saw people finishing at 2:14:00. I took a break there. There were lots of ups and downs, many steep, but none very long. It was generally uphill to Comus Rd. I averaged about 16mph to there and passed a few parks with O' mapping opportunity. Turning around there, I relished the downsloping Peach Tree Rd., took in good views of Sugarloaf, and cruised over 20mph on average to Poolesville. My back had been bothering me but it loosened-up after the break. I continued to cruise to River Rd. and after the break, only averaged 18mph due to the many hills on that road. There were lots of cyclists out on River Rd. One passed me there but I kept him in sight and close except for the last mile. I needed to do longer rides like this and look forward to more if time will allow. Besides the endurance benefit, it helps me smoothes out my cadence and pacing. I lost the exact timing as I was putting my bike back in the van.

Bicycling (Commute) 18:30 [3] 3.7 mi (5:00 / mi)
weight:176.5lbs (injured)

From Northfield Rd. Custer Rd. and Glenbrook Rd. to Falls Rd., to the Capital Crescent Trail, and then back. I towed Max on his trail-a-bike to the pool. It was a busy day and we rushed out to the pool before it closed, under rain threatening skies. Max was more eager to move fast than I but as usual, his efforts were erratic. That made it hard for me to find the right gear.

Swimming (General) 40:00 [1]
(injured)

Splashing around with Max in the Bethesda Pool. I sometimes swam with Max on my back. On one of these I submerged deeper in shallow water and skinned 3 knuckles pretty good.

Bicycling (Commute) 41:01 intensity: (31:01 @3) + (10:00 @4) 12.41 mi (3:18 / mi)
slept:5.75 weight:176.5lbs (injured)

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to Arlington Ave. with Max on his trail-a-bike, then to 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. Besides Max's backpack and my pannier, I had to carry an extra bag on my shoulder for Max's slumber party day. It was awkward but I managed to get there slowly. After that, I moved at an average pace not feeling particularly strong in the warmer weather. There were only a few small pockets of cooler air. At MacArthur Blvd., I got passed by two guys who were drafting off of each other. SUUUCK went my wheel. They were really going much faster than I could help with and they didn't seem to mind. We were doing around 26mph down the slope and 22-24mph on the flats until Georgetown. they blocked a lot of wind. Trees sheilded us, so when I was alone after Water St., with a slight SW headwind on more open ground, I was only doing 20-21mph but with a lot more effort.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 44:34 intensity: (7:00 @2) + (37:34 @3) 12.23 mi (3:39 / mi)
(injured)

From 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Arlington Rd. to pickup Max and his trail-a-bike, then to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I had tailwinds most of the way to Bethesda but I was riding alone and it was hotter than it had been. Despite doing about 17mph up the grade, I still got passed by two guys going a lot faster. I had gotten to the usual spot where I lockup Max's trail-a-bike in 39:01. Going home was slower because I once again had to carry an oversized bag on my shoulder along with Max's backpack. The bag kept getting in the way of my legs as I tried to pedal and the awkward positioning started making my back sore.

Afterward, Max and I went out the the Agricultural History Farm Park to see Peggy race XC. I ran some in a tag game with Max and to get to the finish line while snapping pictures of Peggy and others. Despite making efforts to stretch today and feeling better, the running was straining my left calf/achilles.

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to Arlington Ave. with Max on his trail-a-bike, then to 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. Still with the option to ride the bus, Max was still a bit nervous about riding to school on his trail-a-bike but we checked it and went ahead. Today he was reciting a mantra which I can't quite remember but was something along the lines of I'm not going to wreck. After dropping him off, I again enjoyed cool air and sunshine though it was warmer than yesterday. I tried to keep speeds down but sometimes rode too fast. I rode alone the whole way but there were no headwinds or tailwinds on Ohio Dr. either. If not for car traffic, I would have been faster than yesterday instead of 3 seconds slower.
6 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 48:00 [3] 12.08 mi (3:58 / mi)
(injured)

From 12th St & Independence Ave., SW, Washington, D.C. to to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I left work late so I first had to ride through the courtyard and basement of the building to get to 12th & Independence Ave., SW. I went down Independence until I got to 17th St., then because of the traffic, I rode along The Reflecting Pool slaloming tourists to the Lincoln Memorial. It was warm but a fairly pleasant ride. I kept spinning and kept good strength most of the way. I got passed by two faster riders just before River Rd. I stopped at Arlington Ave. to not only pickup Max's trail-a-bike, but Max too. He, Peggy and I participated in a cookout picnic of sorts. It was good to get something to drink there since I had left my water bottle in the office.

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to Arlington Ave. with Max on his trail-a-bike, then to 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I gave Max the option of taking the bus or riding with me. He chose to ride and this surprised me. We checked the bicycle connection together and I asked him several times if he was sure he wanted to do this. He said it was okay as long as it was okay with me. That's a lot of trust. A doctor and nurse at the hospital last week had told him unprompted that he'd need to get back on the bicycle soon so I guess he took it to heart. We rode slowly and he was singing to himself in a carefree manner much of the way; having fun. I was nervous when we got to the place were the bikes came apart last week but we passed it and enjoyed the cool dry air and bright sunshine. Max's scabs are already coming off and he looks much better. After dropping him off, I moved comfortably. I caught a group of riders at the water treatment plant who caught me again at Fletcher's Boathouse, I enjoyed the draft for a while, then got passed by two commuters screaming along. I jumped behind them going well into Georgetown, then slowed with some SW headwinds, taking them at a more sane pace.

From 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Arlington Rd. to pickup Max's trail-a-bike, then to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I kept a mostly comfortable pace and had mixed to no winds. There were a lot of people on the trails and most were cycling.

11 AM

Running warm up/down 3:00 [2] 0.3 mi (10:00 / mi)
slept:7.0 weight:176.5lbs (injured)

Jug Bay, MD. Warm-up for the QOC Beer Chase. It was overcast and humid but not hot.

Orienteering race (Foot) 1:07:29 [4] 8.2 km (8:14 / km)
(injured)

QOC: The (Beer) Chase. The race was fun and I thought Ted Good's course was good for the terrain. If this race had been 3 days earlier, I probably wouldn't have run it. I hadn't run or worked out much for about a week--not as long a gap as David Onkst has had. This race is a bit of a tradition for me now. I was feeling less tightness in my calf so I went ahead. I made some mistakes but none terribly serious. I went out with the faster runners and quicker drinkers, then found myself alone. The leaders, most with international team experience were pulling far ahead and I had a pretty good lead on a few others until I started making bigger errors. Dave Hauver almost knocked me out of 6th place when he almost caught me on the third loop. Either he's getting faster or I'm getting slower--okay, I know I'm getting slower but maybe not that much. I was fortunate to have had more leg speed toward the end especially since Dave was drinking faster. After the race, my left calf was sore again. See the Split List for individual leg comments.

Canoe (River) 20:00 [2] 1.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
(injured)

Jug Bay, MD. I took Max and Mason out for a paddle. Nicole Lennon and Alexis Merka were in another canoe and we stayed together. Greg Lennon paddled a kayak with us part of the time.

From Northfield Rd. to Glenwood Rd. to Bradley Blvd. to Beech Rd. to Bingham Rd. to Beach Dr. to Strathmore Ave. to Rockville Pike to Golf Ln. to the Bethesda Trolley Tr. to Executive Blvd. to Lorrain Dr. There met Peggy and Max in Panera Bread. The third time was the charm. I got dressed to ride for the 3rd time in 3 days and this time I finally did get to ride. Rather than use the bus the other 2 days I drove Max to school. My ride today was nice. It was cooler than it had been. Auto traffic wasn't that bad but I did have to get across a lot of intersections which slowed me. There were a few hills too but the gradual climb through Rock Creek Park into the prevailing wind kept the speed down. I realized on the ride today that when I go out now, I expect to get passed. It didn't happen until the last mile and a half. I had been pulling others but a guy I'm an Army cycling jersey like West Point O'team members have passed and moved us well until I turned off.

Bicycling (Commute) 3:00 [3] 0.4 mi (7:30 / mi)
(injured)

From Northfield Rd. to Custer Rd. to Park Ln. I was looking forward to cycling to work today. Max had gotten up early for once and we got ready with plenty of time. After cresting a small hill and starting to pick-up speed, I heard a sound that no one wants to hear. Max's trail-a-bike had separated from mine and he went down with it pretty hard. I didn't see how he fell and he couldn't explain much of what happened. After the accident, he was bloody under his nose and got some road rash. Fortunately he came through with nothing more serious. There was a small scrape on his helmet so that did do what it was designed to do. I can't explain how the trail-a-bike separation ocurred. I had last ridden with it going home a full week ago, Wednesday and I had left it connected but unridden since then. The only explanation I can think of is that I must not have connected it correctly a week ago and I somehow managed to ride a mile and a half with it before the accident. At the scene, we got assistance from a nurse who saw us and happened to live across the street. Though the road rash looks bad, the hospital said that Max was okay. Max was pretty tough through this; only crying for about a minute. He took it easy at home through the rest of the day and I felt awful.

45 situps. It was a sort of busy day and I got home late. If it hadn't been forecast to be so hot and for there to be heavy thunderstorms, I would have ridden my bicycle.
