Orienteering (Foot) 41:30 [2]
slept:7.0

West Point, NY. While Peggy ran her middle distance course, I went out on the Whiite course, in the recreational category with Max. It was a bit unfortunate that the starter had us go right after another girl who was probably running F10- Max takes after me in naturally wanting to chase after whoever he sees going the same direction. I was trying to get him to read each leg before going for it but he was impatient, seeing others get ahead of him. We kept catching-up to the same girl and others before getting ahead--I'd let Max make some errors but not too much. I was successful in teaching him to orient the map better by asking him to make the map "point" north. With that done, he could point the right direction to the next control but the impatience seemed to keep him from really reading the trail taking him there. The trail was actually difficult to follow in places partly because of erosion in and along the sides of it. When we finished, Max went to play but later we found him listed in the A-meet results; rec and competitive courses were the same. I had them correct this. Otherwise he'd of been in 3rd place at the time. By trying to teach him to navigate today I probably took some enthusiasm out of him as evidenced during the course that this "isn't as much fun as I thought it would be".

Running warm up/down (Street & Trail) 10:00 [3] 1.9 km (5:16 / km)

West Point, NY. From the Round Pond recreation area, I jogged over to the start. I had missed my assigned start time already while taking Max around on the White course. I was worried that they might close the start before I got there. I felt awful plodding along. The hills felt the worst as I had a bloated and heavy feeling. It could of been related to some illness I seemed to be picking up. On Thursday had some nasal drip that I thought was just from increased pollen. By Friday and Saturday I was coughing and my voice was hoarse. It could also reflect being out of shape.

Orienteering race (Foot) 1:01:38 [4] 4.2 km (14:40 / km)

West Point, NY. I had a horrible start--I lost +9 minutes on #1. I moved okay and started walking on the steep part of the hill to the control. I suppose I was drawn a bit left by a Blue course runner but I felt I had a good handle on where I was. I followed an unmapped and parallel rut that from the map looked like it would lead me to the control but it took me much higher. Seeing 3 boulders in a line that looked like ones near the control, I went even higher. I flailed finding 2 other controls before dropping enough. I was off again to the left going to #2 but I corrected that without too much time lost. My route to #3 on the left side of the marsh, staying low, was not optimal but finally I hit a control. I started going straight at #4 but eventually came at it from the left side. I overshot #5 being a bit to the right but corrected well. I was well off the the left on #6 but corrected well again. I hit all the rest well except for the Go control. I was behind a Blue course runner and running faster than I could read the cabins--I was also thrown off by the dire warnings not to go through campground areas on pain of disqualification. The cabin area looked like a campground to me. Stopping, Jeff Shapiro eventually caught-up (I'd only caught and passed him at the previous control, and I had him in front of me as I sprinted to the finish past him. I found it very difficult to run through the rocky blueberries and sticks on the ground--my energy level was rather low.
2 PM

Orienteering (Foot) 29:13 [4] 2.5 km (11:41 / km) +93m 9:51 / km

West Point, NY. After a short nap and taking a much more leisurley walk to the start, I felt much better than I had in the morning. I decided to try out some new Ice Bug shoes that I got--they turned out to be fine with only a little less lateral stability. I got off to a sort of slow start, having oriented the map 180 degrees off and having difficulty finding the start triangle. However, I moved through the first 5 controls well. On the 6th, I took a poor route. Attacking from above off the buildings would have been better. I also got a little confused with the IOF trail symbol instead of the dashed black line that I'd seen earlier when getting Max through the White course. On #8, I missed the turn to the right and ran around the cliff. It was only a little bit slower. I hit #9 well but then I lost track of what I was doing. Instead of going to #10, I started to fixate on #11. I couldn't make sense of the map because I had left #9. After crossing a trail on the way to #11, I relocated but never realized I missed #10 until looking at splits with Jeff Shapiro when it was all over. I hit #11 okay but overran #12 when a woman in front of me headed that way. I figured it out. I was fairly clean going to the other controls. Since the sprint counted in the weekend 3 race total, my mispunch knocked me out from gettting an overall finish.

After getting back to the hotel, I went to the pool with Max and did some easy swimiming. When kicking against the wall to swim the very short length, my foot slipped and I slammed my arch on a concrete corner where there was hole in the side of the pool for a water filter. In the evening, I fell asleep early whille trying to do AP logging and I hacked phlem a bunch.

Bicycling (Commute) 6:32 [3] 1.41 mi (4:38 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:179.5lbs

From Northfield Rd. to the Bethesda Metro Station. I was a lazy man today by not biking all the way to work, but there was a high chance of rain predicted and I could still use the rest. I didn't feel that I slept well. I took my road bike. Peggy had Max for Bring Your Child to Work Day. It was very humid and the temperatures were in the 60s F. I felt hot and a bit more sweaty than I'm comfortable with in my work clothes.
6 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 6:14 [3] 1.41 mi (4:25 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro Station to Northfield Rd. It was warm but there was a nice headwind to keep me from sweating much. I listened to music on the way back. I've rarely tried doing it when riding. It's a bit of a distraction but okay on a leisurely ride like this.

Bicycling (Commute) 18:00 intensity: (6:00 @1) + (12:00 @2) 3.0 mi (6:00 / mi)

From Northfield Rd. to Cordell Ave. via Park St. and Glenwood Rd., then to the Bethesda Trolley Trail to Old Georgetown Rd. to Jefferson St. to Northfield Rd. Max powered me along on his trail-a-bike as he, Peggy and I went downtown for dinner.

Running (Street & Trail) 17:25 intensity: (6:00 @2) + (11:25 @3) 2.29 mi (7:36 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:178.5lbs

From Northfield Rd., to Old Georgetown Rd. to Johnson Ave. to Heamsteadt Ave. to McKinley Ave. to Garfield St. to Roosevelt. Ave. to Jefferson St. to Northfield Rd. I was feeling rather tired much of the day. With rain threatening, I didn't bike, but I got out for this short run and took it easy starting out. I was about 7:52 at the first mile but steadily picked-up the pace.

Bicycling (Commute) 42:09 [3] 12.41 mi (3:24 / mi)
slept:6.1 weight:178.5lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to Arlington Ave. with Max on his trail-a-bike, then to 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I woke-up a bit late and as I bent down I could hear some not so good sounds coming from my left knee. My right forefoot was achy too. I decided to ride, spinned well and wasn't that tired from the run yesterday. It was comfortable and breezy getting to Georgetown. Tree leaf cover protected me from the winds. I pulled a rider from Dalecarlia to Georgetown. After Georgetown, the headwinds were strong, coming from the SW. I slowed a lot until I rounded the Jefferson Memorial. Interestingly and without monitoring it, I finished the ride with the exact same time to the second, as I did last week.
6 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 44:00 [3] 12.02 mi (3:40 / mi)

From 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Arlington Rd., then to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I enjoyed a great tailwind that came from the SW for practically the whole way. There were lots of other cyclists out. Two passed me and I rode my pace.

Bicycling (Commute) 7:05 [3] 1.44 mi (4:55 / mi)
slept:5.75 weight:180lbs

From Northfield Rd. to the Bethesda Metro Station. I got going a bit earlier since Peggy was watching Max today.
6 PM

Running (Street & Trail) 1:17:35 [3] 10.0 mi (7:46 / mi)

From the Glenmont Metro Station, Georgia Ave. north to the Matthew Henson Trail, to the Rock Creek Trail, to Cedar Ln. to Rockville Pike, to the Bethesda Metro Station. Using my GPS watch, this station to station run worked out to be exaclty 10 miles. This is consistent with other times I ran the route and came to Bethesda in a slightly different and minorly longer way. I hadn't run over an hour except for orienteeering, for a long while. Having gotten out of work at a decent hour on a pretty nice day, I set out slowly. At least it felt that way for the first 5 miles. After that I needed to go slower. It was in the mid 80s F, above average for this time of year. At least I had a breeze and some water stops; it's generally downhill too, except for the last few miles into Bethesda where I climbed out of the Rock Creek valley. I did see David Onkst on this run. He noted a lack of sleep and being out on a 20 mile run. My available mile splits based on trail markers were: 7:31, 7:47, 7:43, 7:55, 7:58, 8:06--some of these were probably slightly off in distance.
7 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 6:45 [3] 1.41 mi (4:47 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro Station to Northfield Rd. After running, this felt rather nice. I went leisurely and had a tailwind.

Orienteering (Foot) 1:30:34 [2] ** 3.92 mi (23:06 / mi)
slept:7.0 weight:179.5lbs

Laurel, MD. Jan and Dasa Merka had setup a nice score-o event for kids. The course was through their neighborhood. Max rode his bicycle while I ran along. I had forgotten to bring a compass for Max to use but it was probably better without it. He's shakey enough on a bicycle that he didn't need to be distracted by encumbering his hands. Max planned routes while I oriented the map and reinforced where we were on it. He did pretty well and could demonstrate where we had been on the map. I was impressed with Max's ability to ride his bike through the twisting and sometimes hilly trails. I did help him get up some hills but he was able to go downhill and curve onto narrow foot bridges while keeping in control. I let Max pass one control that he hadn't seen because he was concentrating on his riding. At another, he was just short of seeing a streamer on a field edge and it took some convincing to get him to look in the right area again. He was getting pretty tired toward the end but seeing one of the other kids with his dad did reenergize him enough to finish and get all the controls.

Running (Street & Trail) 39:49 [3] 5.21 mi (7:39 / mi)
slept:8.0 weight:179.5lbs

From Northfield Rd., to Old Georgetown Rd. via Greenwich Park, to the Bethesda Trolley Trail, to Woodglen Dr., to Nicholson Ln., to Executive Blvd./Jefferson St. I'm not sure why I hadn't done this before. After Peggy ran in the morning, I ran over the Panera Bread where Peggy and Max drove to meet a group of the MCRRC. They meet there just about every Saturday so I can look forward to adding some mileage to my already weak mileage weeks as long as my legs hold-up. We'd biked to Panera Breaq with Max on Saturday mornings before but ever since Max had gotten too big for a babyjogger, I haven't been doing Saturday morning runs. I started this one slowish, but was 7:35 at the first mile. A toilet break near the end would have been nice. It was around 50F when I started but was warming fast as the sun cleared off the rains.

Bicycling (Commute) 7:45 [3] 1.52 mi (5:06 / mi)
weight:180lbs

From Northfield Rd. to the Bethesda Metro Station with Max on his trail-a-bike. I tried to stuff the trail-a-bike into my locker at the station, planning to also put my bicycle in it. However, the trail-a-bike wouldn't fit at all. I locked it up on a rack.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 6:32 [3] 1.42 mi (4:36 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro Station to Northfield Rd. with the trail-a-bike.

Bicycling (Commute) 42:09 intensity: (10:00 @3) + (32:09 @4) 12.41 mi (3:24 / mi)
slept:5.75 weight:181lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to Arlington Ave. with Max on his trail-a-bike, then to 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I wasn't feeling that energetic but made good time going downhill. Slowing on the flats, one of the guys I passed pulled me the rest of the way into Georgetown. Feeling a little rested, I left him again going along the water. The winds were calm again; unusual. It was very comfortable in the low 60s F.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 49:21 [3] 12.02 mi (4:06 / mi)

From 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Arlington Rd., then to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I had anticipate a tailwind during my lunchtime walk but the winds must have shifted. It was from the NW which meant headwinds all the way home. I almost forgot to pickup Max's trail-a-bike and went to pick it up from Glenwood Rd. I felt pretty slow at times but I only got passed by one person. I kept focusing on cadence. It's amazing how much slower I am on my commuter bike but part of it must be a cummulative effect of being more tired from recent workouts, however weak they've been.

Running (Street & Trail) 16:03 intensity: (6:03 @2) + (8:00 @3) + (2:00 @4) 1.91 mi (8:24 / mi)
weight:180lbs

From Northfield Rd., Max rode and I ran to Bradley Hills ES. After playing some tag at the playground and waiting when he just rode circles, we took to the streets surrounding the school and went home. I had to run fairly quickly when Max was going downhill but I got to slow down when going uphill. Sometimes I had to hold Max's handlebars and pull him up. With it being warm out, I felt I got enough of a workout. My legs were feeling tired from the start.

Bicycling (Commute) 46:46 intensity: (11:30 @2) + (5:16 @3) + (30:00 @4) 12.43 mi (3:46 / mi)
slept:5.75 weight:179.5lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to Arlington Ave., to 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It's Spring Break for Max. While Peggy and I still need to work, for Max it's Wheel Day at his before/after care. He got his choice of bringing a remote control car, skateboard, scooter, or bicycle--he chose his bicycle. Since it's going to be a nice day, I wanted to ride too. Deciding to do that my only basic choice to get Max to school with his bicycle was was to let him ride it. We went slowly and walked across the busier intersections. He did pretty well though I rode holding onto his handlebars when going uphill to keep him steady and give him a hand. Though he was not exactly in full control all of the time, Max crashed only once, brushing a curb at low speed and sort of staying on his feet onto the grass as his bicycle went down. He gets distracted too easily, looses focus, and looses balance. While riding he was trying to tell me a rememberance that he thought was funny. I'd have liked to laugh along with him but was torn between trying to keep him from falling and letting him experience the joy of the freedom of riding. He must have been enjoying it because he took a moment to verbalize that this was his first day riding to school (on his own bike).

After getting Max to school I took off. I finally fixed-up my commuter bike so I was on it. I was surprised that I was moving pretty well. At one point I thought I might have had a tailwind but the winds were actually calm. I kept a good cadence going the whole way. My time was pretty quick considering that I rode 1.1 miles with Max for over 11:30 minutes.
6 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 43:05 intensity: (10:00 @3) + (33:05 @4) 11.89 mi (3:37 / mi)

From 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I had a tailwind for a while and did some good spinning. After a detour at the flooding waterfront and the the traffic in Georgetown, I kept moving quickly. However I just as quickly got passed by 2 people. I didn't want to work too hard but I did keep up a good effort. Like earlier this month, I started running out of energy just before River Rd. The effect of the tailwind seemed to diminish long before at about Canal Rd. As I cruised into home trying to keep my average pace up, I saw Peggy and Max walking back from the park.

Event: QOC McKeldin

2 PM

Swimming (Other) 45:00 [1]
slept:7.5

Max wasn't into going to the QOC meet at McKeldin today and I was not feeling that energetic either. I used the time in the morning to work on house projects and despite the better weather, Max wanted to go swimming. He's getting better and can sort of kick and backfloat across the pool now. We hit our share of slides but Max also ventered into the deepest waters of the kid section without absolutely needing me.
5 PM

Running (Street & Trail) 15:25 [4] 2.24 mi (6:53 / mi)

From Northfield Rd., to Old Georgetown Rd. via Greenwich Park, to W. Cedar Ln. to the Elmhirst Pkwy. Trail, to Cedar Ln. W. to the Rock Creek Trail at Beach Dr. After Peggy returned from her trip, I took a run down to Rock Creek where she took Max down play. With this beingt a short run, I pushed a bit. The weather was great but it was also primarily downhill.

Saturday Apr 16, 2011 #

Running (Street & Trail) 16:53 [3] 2.29 mi (7:22 / mi)

From Northfield Rd., to Old Georgetown Rd. to Johnson Ave. to Heamsteadt Ave. to McKinley Ave. to Garfield St. to Roosevelt. Ave. to Jefferson St. to Northfield Rd. While Max was at a birthday party, I went for a short run in some light rain. The heavier stuff came later. We had to detour around a downed tree blocking Falls Rd. when I drove Max back.

Friday Apr 15, 2011 #

Running (Street & Trail) 18:06 [2] 1.33 mi (13:37 / mi)

From Northfield Rd., I ran along side Max again as he practiced riding his bicycle. We went to Bradley Hills ES and back again. He wanted to play tag and my self-inflicted handicap was to tag him with my nose. Later we tried to call Peggy for a birthday congratulation.

Running (Other) 20:00 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (3:00 @3) + (2:00 @4) 1.91 mi (10:28 / mi)

Max hadn't ridden on his own bicycle since last year. We got all set to try a ride together when I realized before we really left the house that he had more or less lost the skill to ride on his own. I think the larger bicycle we got for him after he learned to ride on the small one (it was too small) last year, was a bit too large for him to comfortably start and stop. I changed clothes and shoes and ran along side of him to help him re-learn the skill. I think he was too tired. His focus wasn't there. He would get distracted by the slightest thing and wasn't the least bit worried about looking away or falling since I was holding him up. Giving him freedom, I had to make several close saves. As we got to the flatter land approaching Bradley Elementary, his focus improved and we rode completely around that school. Of course, there was an obligatory stop at the playground--Max played tetherball with some others. I don't think he really had done that before. He rode back home almost completely by himself. I helped him when stopping/starting at intersections and uphills.

Calisthenics (General) 2:00 [3]
weight:178.5lbs

45 situps. I intended to ride on rollers but I realized that I hadn't yet retrieved my road bike from my locker at the metro station. I had left it there on Friday when we went out for dinner and errands after work. I had been unable to fix the broken spoke on my commuter bicycle since the spoke I purchased turned out to be too short by a few millimeters.

Running (Street & Trail) 31:23 [3] 4.28 mi (7:20 / mi)
slept:5.7 weight:178lbs

Washington, D.C. I did a variation of the loop I call the Memorial Tour. From 14th & Independence Ave., SW, to Lincoln Memorial Circle via the Reflecting Pool, across Memorial Bridge to the Mt. Vernon Trail, to the 14th St. Bridge,. to Main Ave. to D St., SW, to 13th St., SW, to C. St. SW. My legs felt sore and stiff during the day but when I got out, I felt a spring in them. It was Spring after all--all 70F of it! I set out thinking I would go shorter but knew early that I'd be okay going longer. I didn't want to overdo things. I also wanted to keep my pace down but at the first mile I was 7:12 and wasn't trying much. There were bull dozers in the dried-out Reflecting Pool basin and mounds of dirt. The DC WWI memorial was gettting a makeover too. Most of the contstruction around Ladybird Johnson Park on the west side of the Potomac has been improved at least for the trail. I got passed after getting onto the 14th bridge going back across the Potomac River. The tall guy who passed me must have been going in the mid-6 minute/mile range.

Orienteering (Field Checking) 5:30:00 intensity: (4:30:00 @1) + (42:00 @2) + (18:00 @3)
slept:7.0 weight:180lbs

Cabin John Regional Park, MD. From Tuckerman La., I moved quickly between the creek and I-270 to the northern reaches of the park. The uplands went quickly. I found a few rare boulders and some nice pits. The lowlands were tricky with lots of features close together but with thicker vegetation to work around. One gully/stream was completly invisible on an otherwise very good aerial photo. Nearby ditches and a low broken stone wall all converged. In the extreme north of the park the vegetation gets it's thickest but there I mapped an old road and an old car rusting away on it. Crossing to map the west side of the creek for the first time, near Goya Rd. I found many more ditches, gullies and some spur trails. I've got about a day more to go before I'll finish the parts of the park north of Tuckerman Rd. After finishing in the park, I took care of some more thick vegetation by sawing and clipping it up in our back yard.

It was 47F with damp roads but otherwise good for running. I had wanted to do a longer run but that wouldn't fit in the scheduled for the day. My first mile (uphill) was 7:33, the second (downhill) was about 7:10).

Bicycling (Commute) 6:28 [3] 1.43 mi (4:31 / mi)

From Northfield Rd. to the Bethesda Metro Station. Peggy's car is in the shop for repair so I rode. The roads were damp and there was a slight sprinkling. I often avoid bicycle commuting in any damp weather (slippery, auto traffic doesn't see me as well, and I get wet clothes) but it was fine.

slept:5.5 weight:178.5lbs

From Northfield Rd., to 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It was 45-46-F, sunny, with fairly calm winds. I didn't intend to push but crossing Bradley Rd. at a traffic light I got matched-up with a flashy but similarly aged roadie on a fixed gear. He had a great cadence. He never said a word even after I commented on it. We shared leading fairly equally until he turned off behind me at Glover Archbold. I got the feeling that the noise from my derailer that needs adjustment, and the fact that I was going his pace in my not so flashy ripped running jacket, white socks and a Camelback for a commuting backpack (shoes were already at work), may have annoyed him. I slowed a bit off the trails, and needed to.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 37:28 intensity: (20:28 @3) + (17:00 @4) 11.27 mi (3:19 / mi)

From 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Arlington Rd., Bethesda, MD. With Peggy's car disabled, I had to go get Max. I got there late but had fun riding. I caught a guy near Fletcher's Boathouse but he passed and pulled away going up the hill. I caught him again at River Rd. but he's in much better shape than I and I broke contact on the bridge. In the pedestrian traffic I caught him again. There was a headwind much of the way to Bethesda. Once I met Max he walked while I, in my cleats, road at 2.3mph along side of him. Max was like a doggy, getting down on all fours to roll in the new green grasses in the yards we passed. We met Peggy later.

slept:5.75 weight:179lbs

From the Woodley Park Metro Station, I ran down into Rock Creek Park, crossed through Dumbarton Oaks to Glover Archbold Park via the Dumbarton Oaks Trail and the Wesley Heights Trail. I didn't feel that strong. I also was trying to keep my pace down. Just as soon as I'd gotted onto the Glover Archbold Trail, another runner was up just ahead and going my way. He slowly pulled away and though I felt I could keep up, I didn't try to. He turned off at the next road crossing. I hadn't been in Glover Archbold park for a while and the climbs seemed steeper than I had remembered. The leaves are still off and that made it look additionally wierd but overall it was very pleasant.

From Northfield Rd., to 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. The promise of 78-80F day, the first in a while, was sure to get me out. I felt okay starting out. It was in the mid 50's F but there was a pretty good headwind. The closer I got to DC, the more I felt it, the more tired I felt. I was glad that I was on my road bike which cuts the wind and rolls much better; I was still faster than I usually ride on my commuter bike on a good wind day. I kept up a good cadence. The cherry blossoms in DC and in Bethesda were still out in full force and not many petals were being blown off yet.

Bicycling (Commute) 41:39 [4] 11.79 mi (3:32 / mi)

From 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I escaped work once again just before getting my bicycle locked in the courtyard. Emerging onto the street, I was immediately blasted by some stiff winds. I moved well through it as it only last until I rounded the Tidal Basin. I had a partial tailwind next but as the cherry trees were still drawing crowds, I had to negotiate both the cars and pedestrians. The Rock Creek Trail along side of the Kennedy Center was slow and I hadn't seen Georgetown that messed-up in a long while. Finally in the clear, I moved well on the Capital Crescent Trail. I was blowing by most people but picked-up one drafter for a short while. I started tiring just before River Rd. where either a shift in bearing or the wind gave me more headwinds. There were more pedestrians and cyclist to get through from there to Falls Rd.

Orienteering (Field Checking) 4:35:00 intensity: (4:05:00 @1) + (30:00 @2) 6.0 mi (45:50 / mi)

Cabin John Regional Park, MD. From Tuckerman La., I went over some of the areas I had been in before to make some minor adjustments; I found some things to add there. I also went northward covering the east side of the creek a bit past the pond. There were a lot of things to capture. For a while I was feeling like it was field checking death by ditches. There were many and I found this intersting in comparison to Lake Needwood and Lake Frank, both not that far away, where there are very few. Many ditches as well as other features appeared to be man made. I also found yet another trail unknown to me earlier. It was intermittant but appeared to be newly made to cover the high ground parlleling I-270. I somewhat despartely was working to cover as much of the green areas as I could before the leaves come out. There are lots of green areas in the lowlands and many of them have thorns.
