Bicycling (Road) 1:07:09 [4] 22.0 mi (3:03 / mi)

From Bowie, MD; From Quill Point. Dr. to Prospect Hill Rd. to Greenbelt Rd. to Northern Ave. to Good Luck Rd. to Springfield Rd. to Beaver Dam Rd. to Edmonston Rd. to Powder Mill Rd. to Laurel-Bowie Rd. to Highbridge Rd. to Fletchertown Rd. to Quill Point. Dr. - Either jet lag and the heat got me or I had one too many an Irish breakfast - perhaps both. I felt weak but it could have been worse. I did 20.3 mph going out but returning into the wind with more hills proved too much to keep it up.

Running (Street & Trail) 15:37 [4] 2.5 mi (6:15 / mi)

In Limmerick, Ireland; From a hotel off Ennis Road, two laps around a big block. Though I saw runners elsewhere throughout Ireland, people here stared at me as if they'd never seen one. They were fairly kind though and one of them told me to "Enjoy that now." I did as well as the whole honeymoon.

Running (Street & Trail) 34:56 [3] 5.0 mi (6:59 / mi)

From Ashford Castle, near Cong, Ireland, the Advanced Loop plus some more. It went along the eastern shore of Lough Corrib past a boathouse and an oblisk. The surrounding woods looked thick. On the return leg, I past the house used in John Wayne's movie The Quiet Man. They showed the movie in the castle rooms daily. Just past that I went past the falconry school where two falcons were being handled to show a single tourist who had signed-up. I finished with a ramble through the gardens and the immediate castle grounds, stopping at the stone bridge. It was very pretty--Peggy was sick and couldn't come on this one.

Running (Street & Trail) 44:16 [3] 6.5 mi (6:49 / mi)

Near Oughterard, Ireland; From Waterfront Bed & Breakfast off Lough Corrib in the Connemara, a loop past Castle Aughnanure to the main road and back past the golf course. Went farther than I planned but it was the shortest loop from where Peggy & I were staying.

Running (Street & Trail) 10:20 [2] 1.4 mi (7:23 / mi)

Warm-up for an orienteering meet.

Orienteering (Competition) 19:42 [4] 3.9 km (5:03 / km)

Near Watergrasshill, Ireland. The Cork Orienteering Inter-firm League weekly event. The course was in a logged area with very thick green. The course however was more of a Yellow grade with almost all trail running. I felt sluggish. My time was 3rd best at the time I left.

Bicycling (Road) 2:47:00 [2] 29.5 mi (5:40 / mi)

Starting from Dingle, Ireland, clockwise around the Slea Head Drive, past famine houses, stone beehive huts, and very beautiful coastline. It was windy and rainy going out. Peggy and I wore rain gear and were pleased to have a sunnier return. ("It would have been nice in good weather" -- Peggy)

Sunday Jun 23, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 1:16:18 [2] 7.0 mi (10:54 / mi)

Starting from Muckross House in Kilarney with Peggy (hence the #2 for intensity -- going at Peggy's pace --PD), Ireland, around Muckross Lake then up to Torc waterfall, then back down a road/trail to the Muckross House.

Hiking (Off-Trail) 3:00:00 [2] 3.5 mi (51:26 / mi) +400m 37:57 / mi

Grey Mare's Tail in the Bluestack Mountains of Ireland. Went along the road to the ruins, then straight up the wide-open grassy hillside, along a stream/waterfall. It was steep enough to reach out and touch the ground in front. The ground was so wet that it gushed water with each step. The waterfall was beautiful. On top were some lakes, sheep and neat tufty bogs. The walk across the bogs was slow. Peggy and I circled left over a knoll and orienteered down an easier route across more sheep fields.

Hiking (Site Seeing) 1:15:00 [1] 2.0 mi (37:30 / mi)

Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. Hiked the cliff edge then down the stairway to the Organ. Came back along the low road.

Orienteering (Competition) 35:59 [4] 4.7 km (7:39 / km)
16c

Hill Wood in Ireland near Kildare. Flew in the same day so Peggy and I were jet lagged. I ran okay but skipped an easy control again (#15) so Peggy beat me again despite that she ran slower and found the thorns w/o her gaitors. The course had lots of depressions.

Orienteering (Competition) 48:33 [4] 5.8 km (8:22 / km)

The Beer Chase. It was fun! Forget about the fact that I somehow missed #6 and was DQ'd. The race would have been more satisfying if I didn't follow people (mass start event) so much and still make mistakes. The party aftward was nice and the breeze coming off the water wonderful. Everyone was very kind and since it was the day before our wedding with many out-of-town visitors it was special. The beers were twice as big as the year before.

Warm-down to Cole Field House & back.

Bicycling (Commute) 22:53 [3] 6.2 mi (3:41 / mi)

Bowie to New Carrolton - After 3 weeks living in the Northridge section of Bowie, I've finally gotten things in order enough manage a commute on bike again. The ride on Rte. 193 and Rte. 450 is not very pleasant but has a shoulder most of the way. The beltway underpass is an exception to this so I use a sidewalk and have to hop curbs at ramp intersections. Most of the hills are graded nicely. It was warm out and I sweat a bit. 45 seconds for TL's.

Bicycling (Commute) 20:52 [3] 6.2 mi (3:22 / mi)

New Carrollton to Bowie - Straight down Rte. 450 with traffic in New Carrolton--yuck. Slight headwind in the hot weather. It's nice to be on bike again. 30 sec for TL's.

Bicycling (Road) 1:07:00 [2] 15.5 mi (4:19 / mi)

From Quill Point Dr. in Bowie; Prospect Hill to Rte. 193 to Northern Ave. to Good Luck Rd. to Springfield Rd. to Powder Mill Rd. to Laurel-Bowie Rd. to Highbridge Rd. to Quill Point. Dr. Needing a break and some excercise, Peggy and I took an easy ride through the research center.

Running (Trail) 41:14 [3] 5.57 mi (7:24 / mi)

In Greenbelt Park with PGRC (Howard); Perimeter Trail from Sweetgum. I was tired and Howard slow from his fall last week.

Orienteering (Training) 13:14 [4] 0.0 km

Summer O' Series training in Greenbelt Park - Peggy organized a bunch of controls around the edge of the Sweetgum parking area. We had a mass start. Everyone had a different course with the objectives of practicing reading quickly, running fast and not being distracted by other competitors who were crossing our paths. About 10 people participated and it was fun. Distance TBD.

Hiking (Street Walk) 30:00 [1] 1.9 mi (15:47 / mi)

From L' Enfant Plaza Metro Station to Eastern Market Metro Station in Washington D.C. I got off work late because I was in a conversation that I wanted to end at work. As a result, I missed a metro train. The next two were Blue so I after waiting 10 minutes, I finally caught one. It turned out that a fire or something occured somewhere ahead, possibly on one of the trains I missed. I had to walk (fast and on a humid breezy day) a few blocks to get around the stations on the line that were closed. Okay, this is a poor excuse for exercise but with working out only two days a week lately, I had to put something in Attack Point.

Running (Street & Trail) 23:54 [3] 3.6 mi (6:38 / mi)

Laps around UMD Track and a little on campus. Hot at first but breezy. I got there late so I was lucky to get a run in at all.

Running (Trail) 41:41 [3] 5.57 mi (7:29 / mi)

From Sweetgum Parking in Greenbelt Park, Perimeter Trail with PGRC. Started slow with other runners (Pete, Dave, and Howard) then picked it up at the end. Howard had run earlier and fell down twice on the loop he ran with me. The second fall cut a gash in his forehead. Still no time for training; only two weeks to go...
