Bicycling (Commute) 15:43 [3] 4.0 mi (3:56 / mi)

Greenbelt to New Carrollton. I was tired from yesterday but also felt a slight headwind.

Bicycling (Commute) 16:59 [3] 4.0 mi (4:15 / mi)

New Carrollton to Greenbelt. 2:20 for TL's. I was feeling tired and weak on hills.

Running (Street & Trail) 31:40 [3] 4.55 mi (6:58 / mi)

From UMD Track, Northwest Branch Trail to East-West Hwy & back. I was tight early but loosened-up some coming back after the uphill.

Monday Apr 29, 2002 #

Bicycling (Commute) 14:08 [3] 4.0 mi (3:32 / mi)

Greenbelt to New Carrolton. Windy but got some head and tail winds.

Bicycling (Commute) 1:11:04 [3] 20.0 mi (3:33 / mi)

From New Carrollton to Northridge via Rte. 564, to Highbridge Rd. to Laurel Bowie Rd. Rte. 197, to Rte. 198 to Soil Conservation Rd. to Greenbelt Rd. to Windsor Green. I wanted to checkout the direct route of my future commute, (it took 22:30) and then wanted to get a longer ride in. This avoided some running to give my back/hip a better chance to heal. It was very windy (12-20mph) w/temperatures in the low 50's. I was slowed a lot in the wind and on the uphill. 2:15 for TL's.

Orienteering (Competition) 1:36:49 [4] 6.6 km (14:40 / km)

Mont Alto, PA. QOC and SVO Dual meet. There were some big hills and many rocky areas. The map was out of date (logging) which caused me one big error. I also had a mental lapse for a second big error. Back was tight which kept me from sprinting harder on the few trail portions. See the Split List.

Running (Warm-up/Warm-down) 5:00 [2] 0.4 mi (12:30 / mi)

Warm-up jog and a jog from the finish to the start.

Saturday Apr 27, 2002 #

Running (Trail) 38:22 [3] 5.57 mi (6:53 / mi)

In Greenbelt Park. Perimeter Trail backwards. Back was tight but didn't hurt too much. The time off was good but I probably need more of a break from running to heal it.

Hiking (Day-Trip) 1:10:00 [1] 1.8 mi (38:53 / mi)

Starting from Paradise parking on Mt. Rainier, Washington (at around 5,800ft), up to and a little past Alta Vista overlooking the Nisqually glacier 600ft. higher) and back. Work finished early. I hadn't come to hike and only had my running shoes. The snow was hard packed with the top 2-3 inches of the 8-9ft. accumulation soft. I slipped and slid alot. Others were in snow shoes. I took pictures and listened to the rocks fall around the glacier. I had to stop well short of the high point of the trail as it was starting to get dark and cold. The full moon rose above the peaks after I'd finished. It was paradise.

Running (Street & Trail) 39:43 [3] 5.6 mi (7:06 / mi)

From Windsor Green, Ridge Rd. to Greenbelt Lake, around the lake, and
back to Windsor Green. Slow start. Hip/back hurt all the way through the run. I perhaps should have cut it short.

Sunday Apr 21, 2002 #

Running (Trail) 56:41 [4] 8.35 mi (6:47 / mi)

Northwest Branch Trail - Colesville Rd. to the Nature Center in Wheaton Regional Park and back. More good sleep and I felt like a new person. I took a single aspirin and my back only felt sore to begin with. It started raining lightly just before I started running and stopped just after I finished. I felt like I used to feel when running--hopping logs and bounding over or on rocks like I was flying. I got tired on the downhill return and kept very even splits. Perhaps my back/hip troubles are sleep/stress related/aggrivated?

Orienteering (Competition) 1:55:39 [4] 11.3 km (10:14 / km)

24th Annual Billygoat Run - See Split List. Was happy to run at all considering the way I felt the previous 2 days. Aspirin and rest helped a lot as did people I followed...

Friday Apr 19, 2002 #

Warm-down.

Monday Apr 15, 2002 #

Bicycling (Commute) 14:56 [3] 4.0 mi (3:44 / mi)

Windsor Green to New Carrollton. Nice warm morning--no jackets or long pants! Headwinds but in the warm weather is was easier. 55 sec for TL's.

Bicycling (Commute) 14:42 [3] 4.0 mi (3:41 / mi)

New Carrollton to Greenbelt. Some tailwind and near record temps--80's. 1:12 for TL's. Peggy's birthday! No time for further training.

Sunday Apr 14, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 34:30 [3] 5.1 mi (6:46 / mi)

Roads around Northridge, Bowie, MD. Hip/back hurt just walking around before the rund and during it too. No time to go farther. Much to do. Felt better and stronger toward the end, easily running in the 6:30's.

Saturday Apr 13, 2002 #

Running (Trail) 38:59 [3] 5.57 mi (7:00 / mi)

Greenbelt Park Perimeter Trail w/Howard from PGRC. Started easy but picked-up the pace. I didn't intend to go this fast but with Howard leading I got into a stride and loosened-up. My hip/back still hurts and ached afterward.

Friday Apr 12, 2002 #

Bicycling (Road) 37:19 [3] 11.5 mi (3:15 / mi)

From Windsor Green, Research Rd. into BARC, to Powder Mill Rd. to Springfield Rd. to Good Luck Rd. to Windsor Green via Greenbelt Rd. Body was tired so I thought a ride would make it better. I meant to ride into work but the forecast was for rain. The evening was nice and the ride loosened me up. No time for a longer ride.

Thursday Apr 11, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 1:19:15 [3] 11.0 mi (7:12 / mi)

At dusk, from Windsor Green, Good Luck Rd. to Auburn Ave. to Riverside Rd. to the NE Branch Trail, to Edmonston Rd. to Windsor Green via Old Greenbelt. Started out under 7 min. pace but I tired on uphills. I was feeling the cummulative effects of the increased training. After a big climb around 8 miles, my right thigh was very fatigued and hurt but was not injured. It was probably from all the overcompensating for my right shin earlier. I jogged-in. The shin felt good throughout the run. When in better shape, I've done this course in under 70 minutes.

Wednesday Apr 10, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 38:51 [3] 5.6 mi (6:56 / mi)

From Windsor Green, Ridge Rd. to Greenbelt Lake, around the lake, and back to Windsor Green. Slow start. Hip hurt a little and I was carefull throughout about footing for my shin injury.

Tuesday Apr 9, 2002 #

Running (Track) 45:00 [3] 6.6 mi (6:49 / mi)

At UMD in the rain. Shin too sore for intervals. It hurt starting out but gradually got better as I warmed-up. 24 laps in the 5th lane. Hip hurt a little.

Monday Apr 8, 2002 #

Bicycling (Commute) 16:47 [3] 4.0 mi (4:12 / mi)

Greenbelt to New Carrolton. Steady coldish headwind. Legs were tired too. 45 seconds for TL's.

Bicycling (Commute) 14:21 [3] 4.0 mi (3:35 / mi)

New Carrollton to Greenbelt. Tailwind mostly and warm - yeah! 35 seconds for LT's.

Bicycling (Road) 47:09 [4] 14.5 mi (3:15 / mi)

From Windsor Green, Good Luck Rd. to Beaver Dam Rd. to Edmonston Rd. to Crescent Rd. to Windsor Green. Having not ridden my road bike outdoors for many months, it felt strangely fragile as well as light. It was showing it's age too not shifting smoothly and the crank feeling bent. It was much cooler and windy. I had both head and tailwinds. Estimate about 3 minutes for TL's but had timer on auto start/stop. It let me workout harder than I would have running because of my shin pull and slight soreness in the right knee from overcompensation. Avg. time was slow but okay for this time of year and weather. This was kind of a low 4 or high 3 intensity.

Sunday Apr 7, 2002 #

Orienteering (Competition) 1:31:07 [3] 8.66 km (10:31 / km)

West Point A-Meet Day 2 at Bull Pond. Ran taped-up. Fewer rocks and a little less climb (275m). Fewer mistakes. Tried to be careful with my footing. See the Split List.

Saturday Apr 6, 2002 #

Running (Warm-up) 6:00 [2] 0.7 mi (8:34 / mi)

Warm-up for West Point A-Meet. Jog in the cold after a bumpy transport ride on the floor of a humvee.

Orienteering (Competition) 1:47:30 [4] 8.26 km (13:01 / km)

West Point A-Meet at Turkey Hill. Pulled a shin muscle that was aggrivated in the Susquhanna Stumble at Great Falls. See the Split List. 310m climb. Finished in pain.

Friday Apr 5, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 18:00 [3] 2.6 mi (6:55 / mi)

From 14th & Independence Ave. SW DC, around the Tidal Basin to the Lincoln Memorial and back via the Washington Monument. Hip/back and left shin hurt. Estimated the time because I forgot to wear my watch but felt slow.

Thursday Apr 4, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 31:59 [3] 4.75 mi (6:44 / mi)

From Windsor Green, Greenbelt Lake and back. My hip/back hurt most of the way but got a little better near the end. I felt slow and tired from the increased mileage.

Wednesday Apr 3, 2002 #

Bicycling (Commute) 17:56 [3] 4.2 mi (4:16 / mi)

Greenbelt to New Carrolton but dropped off the mail on the way. 1:25 for TL's. Warm but strong head winds. Tired from last night.

Bicycling (Commute) 17:56 [3] 4.0 mi (4:29 / mi)

New Carrolton to Greenbelt. Sure I was tired but having strong headwinds both going and coming to work is not right... 30 seconds for TL's. Much cooler. Coincidentally it to the same time coming and going though different distances were involved.

Running (Street & Trail) 16:45 [2] 2.3 mi (7:17 / mi)

Windor Green to Mandan Rd. & back via apartments. Slow and stiff. Hip hurt and then I stepped on a tuft of new grass thus aggravating/slighlty pulling a sore area near my left shin. I loosened-up some however.

Tuesday Apr 2, 2002 #

Running (Track) 12:21 [2] 1.65 mi (7:29 / mi)

Warm-up at UMD Track.

Running (Track) 29:29 [4] 4.4 mi (6:42 / mi)

6 x 800m intervals w/+400m jog: 2:48(3:20), 2:49(3:20), 2:45:(3:18), 2:49(3:06),2:49(3:12), 2:45. Started the first 2 w/Bob Grumbine of PGRC.

Running (Track) 14:59 [2] 1.6 mi (9:22 / mi)

Warm-Down at UMD.

Monday Apr 1, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 1:08:48 [3] 10.0 mi (6:53 / mi)

Windsor Green to the Paint Branch & Indian Run Trails via Good Luck Rd.; Berwyn Rd. to Edmonston Rd. to Greenbelt Rd. to Windsor Green via Old Greenbelt. Felt good to start but slowed after 2 miles. Running at night as I have many times before. Fell at a curb and scrapped my knee and hand--this after just having talked to Peggy about how running at night is okay. I think it could have happened in the day too because my feet were just dragging; not lifting as before. I kept my stride down too to minimize problems w/back and hip. After the run, they did not hurt as they have been so it or the time off might have helped. I ran this 4 minutes faster in the fall. Was a nice spring night and I came back to watch UMD win the NCAA Basketball Championship--glad I had gotten out of College Park by then...
