A traipse around
Mooers, NY, from Nancy's parents' house. I have this listed as road running because there was a lot of pavement in it, but not entirely. The long E/W stretch (around mile 1, and later mile 7), and the second E/W stretch ("Orr Rd.", around mile 3) were both dirt roards, the former being an old railroad bed. Then there was the part from mile 5 to 5.5. I decided to head down a cart parth through a hayfield, which turned into just hayfield, then I tried going into the woods, and that was kind of green, then a little wet, then eventually just turned into dark green uncrossable marsh. So I backup up a little and headed east, and it still wasn't very good, and I got pretty scratched up, but finally made it back out to pavement. If this had all been planned in advance, I suspect that the satellite photo (nice that hi-res is available here, it stops just to the west) might have been enough to get get me through relatively cleanly. The last little bit of woods near the end (back to the house) wasn't so bad. Weather wasn't so great, kind of hot and extremely soupy.
I had kind of been thinking of making a renegade run to the Canadian border, but I didn't have a map with me, so I wasn't sure how far I had to go. If I find myself up there at some point in the future, I might bring the photo and go for that. Looks like there might be some old cart paths that would get me pretty close. Surprisingly, it appears that the border is unambiguous due to being mowed.
