running 27:10 [3] 5.7 km (4:46 / km)

To the base of Pilot Butte and back plus the run down.

Today’s challenge was to run up Pilot Butte. 1.5 km and 150m. It is a steady 10% grid the whole way. The promise was views over the surrounding flat land to the mountains. Disappointingly it was hazy and the views were not particularly good.

Took inspiration from Blair and cleared out all the streets in Dufur in one go. It helped that the population is only 600 and it is on a compact rectangular grid. Did east-west first, then north-south.
And saw two other runners

Out and back run along the Dufur Valley. Started with an uphill and then flattened before a gentle downhill. Turned around and had the reverse.
Now completed a week where I haven’t seen anybody else running and only 1 cyclist, if you discount the RAMROD participants yesterday. No wonder I get some odd looks from the locals.

A few weeks ago I had lots of issues with the bank over my late mother’s account and finding out vital information in order to complete things like probate applications and tax returns. Now one of the big 4 is giving loads of grief about ID checks. Despite being told we would be away and not having access to text messages from Australia they are insisting on sending the necessary link by text. Flatly refuse to do it by email or WhatsApp, or send it to the US number. Because it it time critical I finally gave up and spent an hour organising roaming in order to receive one text message. Another one to add to the ever growing black list.

Staying in a small town near Mt Rainier, so it is undulating. Short climb out along the road and came to a side trail, which dropped to the river. Followed the trail along the river for a couple of km. Return had a very gradual climb on the river trail, then a short climb back to the road. Overall a very pleasant run.

Back on the road saw huge numbers of riders. Turns out they are doing RAMROD, Ride Around Mt Rainier in One Day, 260 km and 3000m of climb. The weather was pleasant enough at 7 am, but the top temp this afternoon is expected to be close to 40, which will make it even tougher.

There was not a flat section on this loop. Nothing long or steep, just continuously up and down

Was never going to match yesterday’s pace. Headed up the road to try and spot an elk or two, but was sadly disappointed. Shorter run as had a couple of walks planned for the day

walk 3:00:00 [2] 15.0 km (12:00 / km) +200m 11:15 / km

Walk 1 - out to the NW tip of the contiguous states at Cape Flattery and back. Temperate rain forest all the way to the edge of the cliffs. The area gets something like 12 ft of rain a year so the undergrowth is amazingly lush.
Walk 2 - up and around Hurricane Ridge to view the glaciers.

Nice to get a good solid run in. Doing a loop on the Olympic Peninsula and last night stayed at Forks. It is very rural and the second day in a row didn’t see anybody else.
Staying in Forks, which is famous as the sting of Twilight. The B&B where we are staying is the Twilight house, and, despite Forks being a very quiet out of the way town, there is a steady stream of fans viewing the house. I have no idea what the attraction is because I haven’t seen Twilight.

Went along the river at Aberdeen WA. The town was obviously prosperous at some stage, with an extensive waterfront and port. That has long gone and most of the shops are closed and there is a depressed air about the place. It’s biggest claim is the birth place of Kurt Cobain

Could match yesterday’s pace, but a pleasant run. The sea mist gave an eerie feel in the early morning

running 30:40 [3] 6.5 km (4:43 / km)
shoes: Nike next % lime

Late afternoon run at Moonstone Beach CA. Had stayed last night at Carmel, most notable because Clint Eastwood was once mayor, but didn’t get up in time for a run before needing to checkout. Got to Moonstone Beach late afternoon, and working on th e premise that something is better than nothing, got this in.
