running warm up/down 15:00 [3] 3.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: sarva ms

Very rare mid-week O session. This was the assocaited warmup and warm down run.

orienteering 54:50 [4] *** 8.7 km (6:18 / km) +120m 5:54 / km
spiked:15/21c shoes: sarva ms

Took the opportunity to have a rare mid-week o run. It was a reasonable area, but the map could have been better, and I was pretty rusty. OK through the 1 and 2, but a bit sloppy with the exit direction from 2. 3 was a short leg and I did it as a loop rather than straight, 30 seconds. OK then till 12. Control was higher up the gully than I initially thought. Mainly because I didnn't read the complete description which said head, about 20 seconds. 15 required crossing a green ditch, and I hesitated a bit. Dropped a couple of minutes on 16 when I had trouble making sense of the map. Lost of tracks and large earth banks, the mapping of wich needed to be updated. Picked up the wrong track out of 16, so ended up not were I expected and had some extra running to do. Another couple of minutes. Fairly clean to the from there to the end. As I say a reasonable area, but needs a better more up to date map.
Still nice to have a run on a map for a change.

Long weekend in Normandy and Brittany, so an opportunity for a run in a different location. Stayed in Dinan so ran down the hill to the Rance and then along the river and back. Lovely area. Climb was all in the last km coing back up hte hill to the town from the river.
Spent the day on the tourist trail. Mont St Michel followed by walking round Dinan. The church in the centre of the town has a stained glass window dedicated to Saint Roch.

Up to the top of ST Marks hill and then down again, out through Laverstock, but went along Duck Lane instead of up and over. Squeezed the run inbetween the rain showers.

running 1:02:40 [3] 13.0 km (4:49 / km) +150m 4:33 / km
shoes: brooks trance 9 mk 3

Different route this morning. Out through Laverstock, but then took the Clarendon footpath toward Pitton. You need to go though a farm yard to get on the track. Then there is a steady climb of 60+m to but once up to the top it is a nice area.
Heading along the farm track there was a flock of about 30 young pheasants. I thought they would just move out of the way, but they started running along the track in front of me. Went for a couple of hundred meters with me herding the birds along. They would have to be one of the ost stupid birds I have met.

running 48:15 [3] 10.3 km (4:41 / km) +80m 4:31 / km
shoes: brooks trance 10

End of the week. Almost perfect conditions for running today.
Have had an interesting issue at work, which has finally been resolved with a literally priceless twist. Had some equipment shipped from Australia to the UK for a joint trial, but when it arrived at the customs agent the contact it was addressed to was away and the office clerk refused to sign for its clearance, so it sat with the agent. Had to get a letter signed and stamped from Australia to get it cleared. The delay meant that instead of going to teh original address once released from customs it had to be redirected. The customs agent said they couldn't do that. If I wanted it sent to a different address I had to arrange my own courier. The equipment had to go from near Heathrow to the west coast of scotland over night. This is normally a two day delivery, but finally found a compnay that said they could do it. Rang and made the arrangements; and glad to say it was collected and delivered on time. Had a phone call from the courier company this morning to say that the person who had booked the tranport in had made a mistake, and that you have to have an account with them as they only work with commercial client who have accounts. They do not have a means for non-account customers to pay, and are trying to work out what to do next. As the add says
Analyser $100000
Shipping from Australia $2000
Final delivery - priceless

Wet, wet, wet. A months rain in a couple of hours. Stopped long enough in the late afternoon to make a dash for it. Biggest challenge was finding a route that wasn't flooded at some point.

Note

Prior to the 6 day had completed 5 ranking events. Day 1 meant I got the 6th event and went up 1000 places in the rankings. Still room for improvement.

running 42:00 [3] 9.0 km (4:40 / km) +60m 4:31 / km

A bit better than yesterday.

running 35:00 [3] 7.5 km (4:40 / km) +60m 4:29 / km
shoes: brooks trance 9 mk 3

First run for over a week and struggled a bit. Brisk walk yesterday didn't cause any problems, so decided to go for a run today. Again no issues with the laceration and stitches. A couple of areas of the foot still have a bit of swelling and bruising and are tender to prod. Stitches out tomorrow.

Monday Aug 8, 2011 #

Note

Change of dressing on the foot revealed extensive bruising as well. I thought it was black because it hadn't been washed, but alas no, black due to the bruising. Worse than some of the ankle sprains I've had.
Brisk walk showed no ill affects, so maybe a run in a day or two

Thursday Aug 4, 2011 #

Note

Foul day weather wise, raining heavily at times. Went out to the event but not able to run. Did the daily puzzle, so it wasn't a complete waste of time. However, frustrated at not being able to run. Then a trip to the dictor to have the dressing changed. Stitched up it looks much neater than the original open gash and appeared to be healing. asked the nurse if there was any chance of running the next two days. She gave me a glare and then banged the end of my toes, which sent jolts of pain through the effected area. I'll take that as a no.

Wednesday Aug 3, 2011 #

Note

Foot started the day very swollen. There was a certain irony in that he only shoes I could get on were running ones. Swelling and pain subsided during the day, and can almost walk.

running warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.5 km (6:40 / km) +50m 5:43 / km

From the car to assembly area and then to the start as pre-race warmup. No warm down.

Day 3. Bit of a mixed run. Missed the first control when I got one spur too far over and had to come back, cost about 3 minutes. Then ran OK from 2 to 7, although it was very physical and tough running. Heading out of 7 got a stick through the top of my left shoe running down ill. Hurt, but there was no obvious stick poking out, so kept going, but speed was reduced. Reasonably clean through 8 and 9, then dropped a minute on 10. 11 was OK, but hestitated on 12 in low visability pines, another 30 seconds or so, 13 and 14 were no problem. After the stick incident was hampered a bit by sore left foot, but managed to get round, although not as fast as I might have wanted.
Took the shoe off after the race and was greeted by a blood soaked sock, and a large gash which started on the outside of the second toe and then went between the 2nd and 3rd toes and round the base of the 3rd toe. About 3cm long, 5mm deep and 5mm wide. The top of the shoe and the sock had a nice clean hole punched straight through.
First aid gave it a wash and then it was off the the hospital casulty for a couple of hours. Had the gash washed out several times. It had gone down to the bone in a couple of places and torn through part of the muscle at the base of the toe. Plenty of local and 6 stiches. The area at the base of the toes is badly bruised and swollen. Have to keep the foot elevated for a day or two and no running for a few days, especially in the wet marshes. Plus a anti-biotics. Fortunately I had had a tetnus booster last year.
Bugger of a way to end the 6 days.

running warm up/down 12:00 [3] 2.0 km (6:00 / km) +30m 5:35 / km
shoes: sarva ms

Day 2. Warm up had a tough section of climb, and although not hot it was very humid. Sweating by the time I got to the start

orienteering 59:10 [4] **** 6.9 km (8:34 / km) +200m 7:29 / km
spiked:16/18c shoes: sarva ms

Good, but not brillant run. Was hestitant going to 4, but navigated directly to the control, and then late in the course a 30 second error on 16. Tough running for a lot of the course. Not te steep climbs of yesterday, but a slog through the marshes and rough open. Course was spoilt by a loop through the grren pines at the end. It didn't add anything to the course, and the area was navigationally simpler than the moor and forest, so another 500m in that would have been better.
