running 50:00 [3] 10.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: brooks trance 9

Had to force myself to get up this morning, but in the end knew it was that or nothing. No chance at lunchtime or this evening. Slow through the first half, and only marginally faster for the second half.

Thursday Apr 29, 2010 #

running 53:10 [3] 10.6 km (5:01 / km)
shoes: brooks trance 9

Solved the problem of being pushed for time in the evenings by getting up early. While I was away was managing this quite well, but failed to translate when I came home. Decided I needed to get back into the routine after the time pressures of recent dayas.

running 52:10 [3] 11.1 km (4:42 / km)
shoes: brooks trance 9

Lap and a bit of hyde park. Very fresh this morning. Benefit of the cold weather is that the running gear has stretched a few extra days without being too disgusting.
Leaving today. Only 2 extra days, and one cancelled trip to munich, so I consider myself fortunate. However, last night things were not looking so bright, with several bad omens.
Omen No 1: Rang and managed to get the laundry doen express (does that mean they don't really wash it?) and was able to pick up at 6:30.
Omen No. 2: Didn't make a backup hotel booking for tonight.
Omen No 3: Reorganised and rationalised the luggage and packed to leave.
Then when I spoke to Qantas in the wee small hours UK time, they couldn't tell me the flight was definitely going. Contemplated the prospect of another day at Oz House.

Wednesday Apr 21, 2010 #

running 51:20 [3] 10.8 km (4:45 / km)
shoes: brooks trance 9

A bit more restained today. Not sure I could handle another run like yesterday with a 12 hour turn around.
Email is still pissing me of. Rang the help desk last night and got the info on how to patch through, so will be able to do some today. Another imprtomptu day in the office at Aust House.
Starting to get low on work shirts, and the dry cleaners round the corner from the hotel had a special, 6 for 10 pounds. Dropped them off on the way to work, and they will be ready after lunch tomorow. Got to the office and Qantas said there was a very good chance tomorrow's flight will leave, on schedule at lunchtime. Sods law at work! Will need to leave the ticket and money with Aust house staff and get the shirts posted home. If I hadn't taken them in, then the planes wouldn't have flown and I would have been stuck with no clean shirts. Should have known.

running 37:40 [4] 8.5 km (4:26 / km)
shoes: brooks trance 9

Took out the day's frustrations with a brisk run. Throughly piised off by the day's events. Had an early start to catch the train from Paris to London. Scheduled to leave London Thursday, the Icelndic gods willing, so will only have been officially stuck for 2 days. Although missed a meeting in Munich yesterday because could fly there. Tuned out not to be important as the contact I was going to see was still stuck in Oslo from the previous week.
Went into work at Aust House for the day, but couldn't get email connection. Wasted a lot of time and mental energy. Did do some useful work for the day after giving up. Then on the way home tried to get money from the automatic teller, no luck. Final straw was the extortionat fee charged by the bureau de change to swap my last euros to pounds. The teller should have been dressed in a balaclava.
So headed round Hyde park. Parts were very quick, and running sub 4:10 for some bits. Felt better afterwards. Obviously worked as was able to get some money at a different machine.

Monday Apr 19, 2010 #

running 53:20 [3] 11.4 km (4:41 / km)
shoes: brooks trance 9

This morning's run fullfilled a long held ambition, but was a bit of a cliche. Having watched the tour for many years I have wanted to run the Place de la concorde, champs eleyees, arc de triumph lap that the riders do in Paris. Can now cross that one off the list.

running 30:00 [3] 6.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: brooks trance 9

Struggled a bit this morning, combined effects of trqvel and late night. Managed to get my flight from Hamborg to Paris last night, but plane was delayed by the flight chasos, and arrived very late. Woke this morning to the news that flights out are cancelled. Work today, but then not sure how things will go. At the moment the monday meeting is looking unlikely. Tried explaining the situation to my wife, that through no fault of my own I was stuck in Paris, staying in a quality hotel on expenses; no sympathy there.

A loosener up run. Felt a bit stiff this morning after the drive home last night. Would have liked to have staayed around, but work demands prevented that happening. So a lunchtime run to loosen up.

Easter Day 3. Another good clean run. More complexthan yesterday, and slower harder running. Second for the day, behind Geoff. Ran it hard and was very satisfied with the result. The area was well mapped and I was reading it well. Doing the basics right
Overall 3rd behind Geoff and Paul. Only one disappointing control for the 3 days.

orienteering race 43:46 [5] *** 7.0 km (6:15 / km)

Easter day 2. Bought a new base plate compass after the race yesterday and swapped the centre into my thumb compass base, so had a new compass today, but like the old one.
Today was all about running. Course was a nominal 6 straight line. Navigation was straight forward it was a matter of how fast you could cover the ground. Much more runnable than yesterday, even in the pine areas with thinnings. A good run, only 2 and a bit behind Geoff and 1 and a half behind Paul. More importantly picked up the time lost to Roch and others yesterday. Legs just have to hold up for tomorrow.

running warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.5 km (6:40 / km)
shoes: sarva ms

Jog to the start. Bruised buttock from yesterday had been OK walking, but was a bit sore at the start of the warmup. Put it to the back of the mind. Then back to the car from the assembly after the run.

orienteering race 1:02:15 [4] **** 7.1 km (8:46 / km)
ahr:164 max:175 spiked:18/20c shoes: sarva ms

Easter day 1. THinhgs didn't get off to a good start. Took my compass out of the bag and there was a black bit loose inside. It was one of the little magnets on the needle. Bugger! Had to run around and borrow a compass for the race. Course was a nominal 5.5 straight line. Ran 7.1
First control was bad. Was in the right location but couldn't work out a strange land form. Miss erad the saddles, but then realised and straight to it. Lost about 4 mins. Got the act together and ran well to 11. Then out of 11 read the leg from 12 to 13 and headed diagonally down the slope. Realised before I got to 13, but had to climb back up 5 contours. 2 minutes. Then to add some insult slipped as I approached 13 and landed flat on the left bum check. Huge bruise. Round the rest OK. SO gave away 6 minutes. finished 11 down on Geoff, 8 down on Paul and 3 on Roch.
Tommorrow is another day

running warm up/down 12:00 [2] 2.0 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: sarva ms

Jog to the start and then a bit of a warm down afterwards.

Took things very easy this morning.
Day off and drive to Canberra. Heading up the hume spotted an ad hoarding for KFC saying only 45 mins to KFCin Yass. About 5 minutes later spotted one from Maccers saying only 50 minutes to Yass!? Turned out they were side by side and KFC were right.
