hiking 2:23:55 [3] 8.21 km (17:32 / km) +130m 16:15 / km

More clamoring over blowdowns. I'm still amazed at the amount of devastation created by the storm two weeks ago. At least I was able to see lots of telescopes!

hiking 2:16:59 [3] 9.91 km (13:49 / km) +170m 12:44 / km

This was a bit of a debacle in some ways. I had scoped out a loop to both show J-J the Snake Meadow Hill area and go up MIllstone Hill, which we never made it to last week with all of the blowdown issues. But I had looked at OSM which didn't have an additional road/trail that led us into an area that I didn't expect. We ended up in the middle of the woods, with killer mosquitos and no clear knowledge of where to go. Ended up being a longer walk than I wanted without seeing a telescope.

Walking on trail 57:08 [3] 5.33 km (10:44 / km)

Heading home from J-Js and went north this time into Lawrence Woods. A beautiful walk along the river, but the trails aren't quite a nice as the south side. Ended up going through the fairgrounds as well. Had heard about it, but never been.

Walking on trail 50:56 [3] 4.34 km (11:43 / km)

Very pretty patch of mature woods near Four Corners in Groton that doesn't seem to have a name. Followed the obviously mountain bike trail for much of the walk, which was interesting. More trails than shown on my map, though. Luckily I did have a map to swat at the black flies making the walk quite tolerable.

walking on road 1:03:48 [3] 3.62 mi (17:37 / mi) +69m 16:38 / mi

Snake Meadow Hill, up behind my house, following a little different trail, which took me very close to the quarry operation, which was quite active so the walk was far from peaceful. Did a side walk to check on the swan family in Mill Pond, and the cygnets are growing well and I'm relieved to see that there are still four of them.

Walking on trail 56:42 [3] 4.84 km (11:42 / km) +37m 11:16 / km

Sabine Woods and Groton School. I really enjoyed this walk through a new property. I had only been there once when J-J and I had dragged the kayaks to a put-in spot along the river. Very peaceful and hardly any dogs this early in the morning.

Orienteering 1:13:30 [3] 4.65 km (15:48 / km) +129m 13:53 / km

Nobscot Reservation, BYOM Brown Course. Somehow missed starting my watch at the start control so realized it at the first control. Since I saw J-J in the woods and we started just a few second apart, I've adjusted my time based upon his running time. Fairly slow but not too bad on the navigation.

Walking on trail 50:16 [3] 2.44 mi (20:36 / mi) +44m 19:30 / mi

Oak Hill Forest, Chelmsford. A very pretty patch of forest. Other than the constant noise from Rt 3, it would be extremely pleasant. Trail network was strange and no maps in sight. Found my way back soon enough

walking on road 45:10 [3] 2.7 mi (16:44 / mi) +10m 16:32 / mi

Did a wide swing to avoid the train on the tracks and picked up another new trail for Westford. Did have to do a bit of ignoring the no trespassing sign, but it was very old and faded. Enjoyed watching the family of swans of four cygnets with the proud mom and dad.

Harris Center BYOM Training Controls # 1-8 and 16. I thought I had so much trouble with #3, but it appears that I was right there! How did I not see it.Very slow going and not all that much fun. Bugs bothered me some.

Walking on trail 1:13:27 [3] 5.5 km (13:21 / km) +64m 12:37 / km

Home to the Stone Arch Bridge, using questionable technique to get over the railroad track. Then up to St. Catherines, trying to find the trail that I couldn't find on Wednesday taking a different approach. Trail disappears as the beaver pond has expanded, so had to go back out to the road. Spent a lot of time bushwhacking as I was trying to pick up the trail again. Didn't work for a very long time, even though my track looks like I was following a trail. And also realized at the time that granite ledge is very slippery when wet. Difficult outing, but improved with sighting of four deer and a turkey on the way down from the Highway Department
