Checking out the new zueri metzgete course with Thomas, my new team mate and kind of team leader. pushing harf on two climbs, Thomas is climbing surprinsingly well. whole ride in the rain, not so pleasant.
Very nice ride with Ivo, Matthias W. and the Altendorf gang (Pius, Roli). Met them in Wädi and then continued to Siebnen to tackle Sattelegg together. Plan was to ride it all out in order achieve some PBs. After 500m, my legs were already empty (still tired from Monday) and thought about abandoning. But continued and we passed Rest. Sonne after 13:47. Then struggled again and got dropped by Ivo and Pius. Made it back to Pius and held on until the last meters, where I managed to drop him on the last meters :) However, Ivo was first on top with impressive 34:30, I had 35:10, also PB by more than a minute.
While I'm happy with my new PB, still did not manage to break the magic 35min barrier but concentrated more on controlling Pius than pushing all out all the way up for a good time. Avg Pwr 282W, VAM on upper part 1345m/h.
Ride was not yet over as we also rode hard on the way back to Zurich via Meinrad, Hirzel. Only last 20km were easy. Dist/time estimated.
L'Etape du Tour, Modane-Alpe d'Huez. This is a race for everybody on an original Tour de France course, this year's 19th stage. Some 9'000 riders entered for this year's event, making it one of the largest cycling races.
Had to start from block 2 (out of 10) and safely made to the bottom of the first climb, Col du Télégraph. Legs turned better and better and I was constantly overtaking guys, the climb with its even gradient was a real pleasure (1:10 from Modane). After a short downhill, climb of Col du Galibrier (2550m, 1:08h) started right in the town of Valloire. Felt again very good on the climb, just the last 2km felt a bit tougher and legs started to hurt. Then a very long and fast downhill to Bourg d'Oisons, start of the legendary Alpe d'Huez climb. First few hundred meters are actually the steepest on whole climb and I already struggled there; left leg showed some signs of cramp, so tried not to overdo. Recovered a bit in the middle but was at no point able to push similar Wattages as on Telegraph or Galibrier (but still overtaking guys). Last 6km were really tough as I ran out of water and legs didn't want to work anymore. Somehow managed it to the finish without cramps but ascent time of 61min is really disappointing (reminder: record is 37:35 set by Marco Panatani after a long mountain stage...). Nevertheless, I'm very satisfied with my overall performance and ranking (130./6500), was great to ride some of the most legendary climbs in the alps on closed roads. A better starting positions would likely have allowed a top 100 rank but that's ok.
I'm already wondering how fast the pros will ride the course, guess around 3:10h, would be more than 1h faster than me! :S
Commuting to work, warm-up before race, riding home from Pfannenstiel.
Road Bike race 17:48 5.8 km (19.6 kph) +370m
Hill climb race Meilen-Hochwacht Pfannenstiel. The varying pace in the beginning made me tired, so was not able to make the cut in the middle of the race. Got back into the leading group again but the next attack blew me apart and had to ride my own rhytm up to the finish. Did not make it into the first half of the result board (14./24), but competition was pretty fierce too.
Gigathlon, day 3. Took it easier today and only did the Bike course as Besenbiker. Since the last athlete abandonned in two occasions , I had to push hard to catch the 2nd last agin. Great trails in the first part, second part was rather boring.
Gigathlon, day 2, Besenwagen/biker. A very long day on the bike, probably my longest ever on a bike saddle. First 2h inline, then shadowing the last cyclist on the road bike course for some 5h, followed by a 2h break before CHris_B and myself dragged the last Single athletes to the finish on the bike course (finishing at 23:15...).
Gigathlon. Besenwagen/biker. Shadowing the last guy on inlines from Turtmann to Leukerbad, actually took him 2:50h but logging 2h is enough given all the stops...
