10 AM

Run - Trail 15:00 [1] 2.0 km (7:30 / km) +30m 6:59 / km
shoes: Jalas 2010

Legs tired but not shattered, did a nice run through the Featherbeds to warm them up a bit.
11 AM

Run - Orienteering race 32:48 [5] 5.3 km (6:11 / km) +80m 5:45 / km
spiked:21/22c shoes: Jalas 2010

IOC Relays; Glendoo Ridge – West. Great area for the event (much of the course visible from assembly), a run through near the end and good planning, though unfortunately (yet again) there were three separate courses rather than proper gaffeling (and for the fourth (?) year in a row the two front running teams ran the same combination throughout).

Ran third leg with Dooby and Bill. Dooby had a little disaster at start (lots of controls, people and deep heather) but worked well from then on to being us back four minutes down on Cork O 2 and CNOC. Bill made more inroads halving the deficit to two minutes, but my tired legs wouldn’t let me do more than half it again, but it was a big ask to catch ColmH and Boyzone who were battling out front anyways. The latter holding on for a surprise victory for our ‘second’ team.

Dropped 40 seconds on a short leg (big depression mapped as a small one) and lost 20 more on the following down hill leg, which meant I had no chance of catching the leaders, but overall I was happy to be able to run as fast as everyone else. Excellent weekend.
12 PM

Run - Trail warm up/down 10:00 [1] 1.5 km (6:40 / km) +20m 6:15 / km
shoes: Jalas 2010

Nice warm down with Boyzone discussing the outcome of the race and the expected protests over eligibility. It turns out that the IOA rules state that you have to be living in Ireland in order to be eligible for the IOC relays, being a national doesn’t count! Thankfully the committee decided to use common sense and rather than disqualifying half the teams then ‘ignored’ the rule!

1 PM

Run - Trail warm up/down 12:00 [1] 1.0 km (12:00 / km) +100m 8:00 / km
shoes: Jalas 2010

The usual, but not too much of it due to the length of the run ahead.
2 PM

Run - Orienteering race 1:36:09 [5] 15.3 km (6:17 / km) +475m 5:26 / km
spiked:23/28c shoes: Jalas 2010

IOC Classic; Mall Hill and Brockagh. I know I mapped this area but I’ve never run on it and haven’t even been on the area for 10 years. Much faster than I was expecting, super dry conditions helping, which was a bonus as the course was over 15km. Great to have a proper length classic for the first time in many years at the IOC though.

Due to a mix up at the start they set me off a minute late so I started out hard not wanting Colm H to catch me early in the course as he was now only starting 4 minutes after me (took the opportunity to check out #13 on the way to #3). Usual problem of grainy waterproof paper and printing at 1:15k lead to a lot of the erosion gullies and rocky areas (black) being near impossible to read, and lost time in several of these areas. Ended up running on my own the whole way, only seeing JonX also wandering around at #14 with me!

Lost far too much time throughout the course (5 minutes in total), so very annoyed with myself for that but very happy with the way I was running (and I’ll take the result). Not back to where I was yet but the signs are getting better, particularly over the last third of the course where it got steeper.

Tired but not wasted.

1 PM

Run - Trail warm up/down 15:00 [2] 2.0 km (7:30 / km) +100m 6:00 / km
shoes: Jalas 2010

Late start made food a bit tricky, but not such a problem for a middle race. Warm and sunny, though a little wind but ground very dry. Did a few strides and stuff to try and wake my legs up.

Run - Orienteering race 38:37 [4] 5.3 km (7:17 / km) +195m 6:09 / km
spiked:20/21c shoes: Jalas 2010

IOC Middle, Glendoo Ridge – East. Not a bad area at all, but some lose interpretations of it on the map. Physically my legs felt awful all race, I seemed to be running okay (though not downhill) but wasn’t enjoying it and this wasn’t helped when I lost 5 minutes at number 10 (things just didn’t want to fit – think it’s odd there but didn’t have a chance to go back out and check). Number 3 proved to be the main problem for most (though I spiked it (but I was forewarned)), and the map sure didn’t represent the control site, but I didn’t hang round to work out why.

Results all over the place due to protests over number 3. First they removed the split, then another protest (as people who missed it ended up joining up and running the rest of the course together). They stuck with just removing the split, but it’s obviously not a fair method. Didn’t affect my result too much either way as I lost so much time elsewhere. Can’t say I care if I finish 6th or 12th, but for those who lost medals because of it, it wasn’t a very satisfactory solution.

Note
(rest day)

Nice walk along the cliff path at Robert’s Cove in the sun, but no running. Feeling less tired.

Run - Terrain 41:05 [2] 5.0 km (8:13 / km) +150m 7:09 / km
shoes: Adidas Kanadia TR2

Evening run on Tir na Spideoga; never seen it so fast, recently burnt and bone dry. Wanted to be racing, or at least run with a map, but it was nice being out in the evening sunshine anyway – did find a dropped control though (although Faye found an SI card!).

12 PM

Run - Trail 34:00 [0] 4.5 km (7:33 / km) +100m 6:48 / km
shoes: Asics 1150 (2010)

Random. Decided to stop of in the Galtee’s for a run on the way down to Cork, got off the motorway to see an orienteering sign! Obviously followed them and found an army event in Clonmore North. Had a wee chat with them and picked up a map to jog around the novice course (didn’t want anything more). Nice woods but the map needs work. As do my legs.

Note

Legs tired. A lot of walking. Up Sugarloaf (in the sunshine) with Faye, Kieran, Carol and Todd in the morning and then a loop of Howth head in the evening with the two former. About 3 hours of walking all in.
