FVO Pilates and Circuits with the ever dependable D&R. Not doing too bad at all this evening and gave the hip a good stretch.

very reluctant to get moving and found this hard work, though it was just about all up hill.

Soudley Ponds, NGOC Regional event, Brown, 9.2km, 460m, 25 controls.
Strong contender for the worst event that I'll do in 2022? Map was pants with loads of missing features, but what made it frustrating was that on many occasions either the control site of the attackpoint were not right in relation to each other. Cue lots of bumbling around in circles wondering which way to go - 4 controls were badly wrong while a further 6 were not correct (I was probably lucky on two of those). I always seemed to chose the wrong direction to start bumbling - can't blame my vision issues for loosing the time either (about 13 minutes I think)!

Woods themselves were mostly quite nice and it was nice to run in a new bit of the forest (for me). Also a lovely day and conditions were really good. Legs were much more tired than I thought they'd be, so rarely moving very nicely. Certainly lots of other people having similar issues, but somehow Clare seemed to be lucky today...

Strength exercises 20:00 [1]

Clearing and cleaning up the garden. Not real exercise but enough to get me sweating. Had planned on heading to Llantrisant to check out a few map updates but it started to drizzle at the wrong time.

With Martyn exploring the fields and woods to the west of Chepstow. Expecting quite a nice day but it was pretty misty with the sun just about breaking through when we finished. Took a while to get into it and didn't feel fresh even when I did, but it was a nice loop with lots of quite nice paths and two woods that would make good wee maps. Will have to investigate a bit more. Got wee blisters on my left heal and the tip of my right big toe, unusual. Hip was reasonable.

Climbing 45:00 [1]

Good session at Spot with Mark P, Sophie and Matt W. Felt much better than three weeks ago and was actually able to climb a few routes.

Thursday Jan 27, 2022 #

Note

Again, work to get out so no time available during the day and exhausted by the time I finished.

Wednesday Jan 26, 2022 #

Note

Work deadline getting in the way.

Another cool but still and cloudy day which made for nice and dry running. Very tough start straight up Machen, which was hard work but also a nice climb. Martyn pushing the pace tonight and as there was 11 in the unsteady group there was quite a bit of time spent regrouping. Tough but enjoyable run and a few new paths explored.

ahr:139 max:174 shoes: Jalas 2010

Long run in the Black Mountain with Mark P, Martyn, Darren, Simon and Cronin the Barbarian. Cool, cloudy but still, so quite nice for running, though it only took a tiny breeze to remind you that it wasn't actually all that warm!

Not been around here before and it was hard to make a good loop, but think it worked. Some lovely small mountain trods and only one steep climb. Visited three Roman forts (all very underwhelming), a stone circle (quite good) a motte (not much left) and a trig, so a good day out!

Right hip wasn't happy for much of it and struggled to get moving after whenever we paused in the latter bit, also twinged my right groin jumping a bog, which together with the hip put a bit much pressure on my right glute... However, a really enjoyable run, the sun even broke through for a few minutes and the last descent was awesome.

Cold morning, still quite a bit of frost about, so a bit of a wander to get the blood moving after a couple of hours introducing new people to O.

Run - Orienteering 51:50 intensity: (27 @1) + (18 @2) + (3:02 @3) + (28:15 @4) + (19:48 @5) 7.36 km (7:02 / km) +174m 6:18 / km

SWOC local event, Parc Penallta, Blue, 6.5km.
More enjoyable than I was expecting as not a particularly interesting area. Managed to avoid most of the brambles and didn't have too many issues with the sketchy map. Legs dead though so very glad that I hadn't signed up to do the fell race today.

Friday Jan 21, 2022 #

Note

Promised myself that I would make it climbing but I didn't. Did a half day of work as behind on quite a bit of stuff.

Thursday Jan 20, 2022 #

Note

Lovely sunny morning but just too busy to leave work and then ran out of motivation.

SWOC Maprun, Heath (ish). Really didn't want to do this and didn't have time to warm up at all. So a cold start and issues with my phone meant I started very slowly and wasn't motivated. Slowly got into it and started to enjoy it more. Reasonably route until 20 mins left and I made the wrong decision as to what to get - but I got to explore some new streets. Quads a bit tight but happy to be running better than the last few of these that I have done.

ahr:147 max:177

MDC run Kenfig. Didn't take it quite easy enough last night as quite achy today!. Took a good while to warm up, did eventually get going but not feeling strong. Fun running in the dunes as usual, other than a hard fall (foot in hole) where I got a hand full of spikes and a lovely cool and crisp evening, though cloudy so no moon visible. Nobody wanted to get into the sea.

FVO Pilates, for the first time in far too long. Took it nice and easy and made it through without feeling like I will be aching tomorrow. Also good to get some stretching done on the hip, which has been okay today.

With Martyn and Darren from Monmouth, taking in a hill to the NW that I'd not visited before and then exploring some new bits of Doward before heading to the Kmin via Highmeadow Woods and Buck Stone. Others not climbing well at all so on my own on the ups, even though I didn't feel wonderful. Some interesting bits and more exploring to be done in this area, weather also decent, though didn't have any sun. Hip got pretty sore and was pretty painful to stand on after running, really don't know why its flared up this week (or what even 'it' is, but will try more stretching this week.

Lost the sun today but still dry and cold. Not as cold though and shorts were grand. Went for an explore around Fforest Fawr to see how much damage was done by the recent felling. A bit muddy at the moment, but works restricted to where expected - going to be a bramble fest in a couple of years though. Hip still moaning but moving okay today.

Friday Jan 14, 2022 #

Note

Had planned on a climb but arm a bit sore after booster jab. Shame not to have got out as it was yet another glorious day. Did get some physical labour in taking the old garden fence to the recycling centre though.

Another day much like yesterday, so had to go up a hill. Garth today, which was just as nice in the blue skies and crisp cold air. Legs improved over yesterday but hip still complaining.

Glorious day, so had to get out and get up a bit high, so Craig yr Allt was the option. Hip quite sore after last night and legs not up for it all (also very muddy through the horse fields). But so nice to be out in the crisp, cool sun.

ahr:147 max:183 shoes: Salomon Super Cross 2021

MDC run from Pentyrch, but ran up and back with Ollie, which ended up making it quite a long run. Lovely evening, cool, but not cold with a heavy dew and no wind. Route was a bit of a change for a usually MDC run and was nice for it. Can't do much about the muddy bits though. Felt stiff and slow on the way up to Pentyrch, reasonably good on the run, but then found the run home back down the hill very hard work - hip started to hurt and back aching after as well. Don't think I've been doing enough running recently.

Monday Jan 10, 2022 #

Note

No motivation to get my arse moving, not even to do pilates.

Quite an easy trot up the Garth with Ben, trying to avoid the muddy bits. Body feeling grand and a nice enough day out.

Run around what I assume was one of Canop Ponds. Never seen it before. Path was very muddy, but legs not feeling too bad.

Run - Orienteering race 46:22 intensity: (37 @1) + (12 @2) + (2:50 @3) + (16:45 @4) + (25:58 @5) 7.19 km (6:27 / km) +82m 6:06 / km

Western Night League, Canop Ponds, 60 min Score.
Big news from tonight was that I finished ahead of MegCD! That was more her doing that mine though. Clean and moving okay throughout, though never fast, with only one real miss (20 seconds maybe) and a few hesitations. Biggest issue was losing most of a shoe sole, so was restricted for the last 20 minutes. Super muddy, especially the paths, map a bit sketchy in places and some very rough areas from the board, but a nice evening and it was a lot of fun - also nice to be in the forest, running and things working. Still need glasses/magnifier though. GPS completely failed to record anything like reality for an unknown reason.

Climbing 30:00 [1]

Spot with Mark, Ben and Maria. Was totally pants, but fun to be back.

Thursday Jan 6, 2022 #

Horrible day, wet, windy and cold. Let work prevent me from getting cold!

ahr:144 max:168

Nice day but managed to find the cloudy bit with a bit of rain. Legs recovered from the past week much better than I was expecting and felt quite comfortable running from the off. Not wanting much in the way of effort though. Felt good for having done this.

Tuesday Jan 4, 2022 #

Note

Covid case in our new year group so opted to be safe and not run with MDC this evening.

Walk up Moel-yr-hydd with the whole gang. Lots of cool quarries that will require some exploring in the future. Windy.

Run back from the top of the hill with Andy, Alister and Mickel. A bit misty on the top and very soggy under foot, but great to be in the terrain again. Body getting tired though and was feeling it at the end. Will have to do this route again with better views.

Another super fun run with Andy, from Blaenau to Betws over the hills. Some bits much better than expecting, others not so much... Easy start to get Andy's old heart warmed up (appreciated that) and then a nice ridge run to the first hill, after that there was a series of sections that got progressively tougher, starting with a fun bouncy descent through heather, then into some very tough tussocks and lastly into a bit of very thick and rough forest. Easy thereafter though. Good day out.

After a bit of fun with the kids (skimming stones and exploring caves) I headed off on my own to explore a new bit of terrain. Found some nice trods and a nice hill, which I was surprised to meet a walker on top of in the mist. Moving okay today but getting tired towards the end.
