12 PM

Run - Trail 1:13:38 [3] 13.56 km (5:26 / km) +251m 4:58 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2017 (blue)

Back from an Easter egg hunt with Greg (it was Penny and Joby, not Greg, who were egg hunting). Long easy section along the canal followed by a climb over Baildon Moor. Forgot my watch so going to have to nick the GPX off Greg.

7 AM

Bike - Road 34:35 [2] 13.0 km (2:40 / km) +28m 2:38 / km

IW. Body just not wanting to party this morning.

Bike - Road 30:01 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (15:01 @3) 12.77 km (2:21 / km) +49m 2:18 / km

Wednesday Mar 28, 2018 #

Event: After Dark 6

Note
(rest day)

Knot in my calf after last night, quite sore walking so reluctantly opted out of the Street O. Also on site so no cycling either.

Tuesday Mar 27, 2018 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 32:18 [2] 12.99 km (2:29 / km) +28m 2:28 / km

IW. Lots of male mallards strutting thir stuff trying to impress female mallards and not looking at where they're going.
6 PM

Run - Trail 1:11:28 intensity: (12:30 @1) + (21:00 @2) + (29:00 @3) + (7:30 @4) + (1:28 @5) 11.7 km (6:06 / km) +300m 5:25 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2017 (blue)

MDC run from Blaenavon. Really enjoyed this and nice to explore somewhere new. Headed south-east from the town before coming back along the ridge to pick up the end of the L2B route. Good crowd meant two groups.

Monday Mar 26, 2018 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 32:44 [2] 13.01 km (2:31 / km) +29m 2:29 / km

IW. Colder than i was expecting, maybe the heavier coat would have been nice. Moving okay but scuppered by the lights on Corbett Road.
7 PM

Bike - Road 30:52 intensity: (20:52 @2) + (10:00 @3) 12.78 km (2:25 / km) +48m 2:22 / km

Sunday Mar 25, 2018 #

10 AM

Run - Trail warm up/down 12:01 [2] 2.21 km (5:27 / km) +51m 4:53 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons 14

Warm up trot along the forest roads.

Run - Orienteering race 1:01:33 [4] 8.93 km (6:54 / km) +366m 5:43 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons 14

Margam Forest, Welsh League, Brown, 7.8km, 280m, 20 controls.
Really enjoyed this (aside from opting to cut through the dark green to #16) but had no oomph in the body at all. Plodded arounf enjoying the sunshine and the forest, doing my best to avoid the roads as much as possible. This is the sort of area that I should run quite well in but just don't have any form at the moment at all. Not surprised to be beaten by Megcd (although I was just ahead until I went exploring the brambles at #16), but was surprised that BenM wasn't further ahead.

Note
(rest day)

Not had an unenforced day off for a very long time. But today I both didn't feel lie doing any exercise and had other things to get done.

Trot/walk with Nicky over the western Beacons incorporating some map reading lessons. Mostly walking the ups (apart from Fan Nedd) and trotting the rest. First visit to Maen Llia. Dry but not quite as warm as I was expecting (moving for about 5 hours0.

Thursday Mar 22, 2018 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 35:10 [1] 12.95 km (2:43 / km) +29m 2:41 / km

IW. A few more bicyclists about this morning.
6 PM

Bike - Road 31:50 [2] 12.78 km (2:29 / km) +49m 2:27 / km

HFW. Unremarkable in just about any way I can think of.

Wednesday Mar 21, 2018 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 35:02 [1] 13.02 km (2:41 / km) +27m 2:40 / km

IW. A bit of ice around but warm enough for shorts. Where are all the other cyclists?
6 PM

Bike - Road 34:08 [1] 12.57 km (2:43 / km) +58m 2:39 / km

HFW. Annoying head-breeze all the way. Also not motivated to put much effort in.

Tuesday Mar 20, 2018 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 32:17 [2] 12.98 km (2:29 / km) +25m 2:28 / km

IW. A couple of seriously icy patches in Haley Park and Blackwier Fields, but otherwise warm and a nice morning. Very glad I opted to avoid these areas yesterday.
5 PM

Bike - Road 31:49 intensity: (20:00 @2) + (11:49 @3) 12.46 km (2:33 / km) +55m 2:30 / km

HFW. Working quite hard in a gentle headwind. Got nothing to show for all the effort.
6 PM

Run - Trail 1:05:00 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (40:00 @3) + (5:00 @4) + (5:00 @5) 9.55 km (6:48 / km) +381m 5:40 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2017 (blue)

MDC run in Cwmcarn. Fecking watch didn't start again after pausing it. Felt surprisingly good on the steep climb but otherwise a bit of DOMS from yesterdays roads and the endurance was suffering.

Monday Mar 19, 2018 #

7 AM

Run - Road 55:37 [2] 10.62 km (5:14 / km) +53m 5:07 / km
shoes: Asics trail (orange)

IW. Home to find more snow and freezing temperatures, though on a slightly different scale. However, wasn't willing to risk cycling so opted for tarmac pounding instead. Glad I didn't cycle, lots of very slippery pavements, but running was grand - shame the route isn't more interesting as the running itself is fine.
6 PM

Run - Road 55:42 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (25:42 @3) 10.83 km (5:09 / km) +76m 4:58 / km
shoes: Asics trail (orange)

HFW after P2C and dinner. Thought I was moving a bit quicker than this morning but the clock says otherwise (I did eat a lot though). Most of the ice gone, biking should be on the books tomorrow. Legs starting to suffer from the tarmac by the end.

Sunday Mar 18, 2018 #

Note
(rest day)

Enforced rest day, not from wildly celebrating the rugby result but due to a full day of traveling.

Saturday Mar 17, 2018 #

8 AM

X-C skiing 3:45:00 [1] 25.76 km (8:44 / km) +442m 8:03 / km

A treat for out last ski, over to Sjusjoen to watch Birkebeinerne. Saw the first couple of hundred through (surprisingly spread out) before heading on a loop to the north-east (minus John and Ollie). Another stunning sunny day, but body in need of a bit of a rest, especially the arms.

Friday Mar 16, 2018 #

9 AM

X-C skiing 5:45:00 [1] 36.31 km (9:30 / km) +452m 8:57 / km

Sunny ski in the hills (or rather lack of) to the north. Early start as a bit of a drive, also a bit cool, even without wind chill it didn't get above -10 all day. However it was gloriously sunny and the wind was actually hardly noticeable. Very easy terrain on freshly groomed trails with next to no one else around. Little bonus loop at the end to head to a summit, from which the long distance views were amazing. Top day skiing.

Thursday Mar 15, 2018 #

10 AM

X-C skiing 6:30:00 intensity: (5:20:00 @1) + (55:00 @2) + (15:00 @3) 42.51 km (9:10 / km) +736m 8:27 / km

Completely different today, snowed most of the day with a bitingly cold wind. great route though, over to Sjusjoen down-hill slope from Nordseter. Serious wind-chill in places but all the more memorable for it. Also stunning snow as you could see the shape of every crystal. Sjusjoen cafe not a patch on Nordseter, being both more expensive (£24 for a pizza) and not as good cake.

Left the group once we got back to the cars and skied back to the cabin on my own. Snow stopped by now and in the shelter of the wind. Really enjoyed this.

Wednesday Mar 14, 2018 #

10 AM

X-C skiing 3:15:00 [1] 15.69 km (12:26 / km) +287m 11:23 / km

Morning ski, again from the cabin as there was still no sign of the snow-plough. Lovely day again, though getting colder. Half of this was on a narrow trail that hadn't been pisted recently. Lots of fun but very hard to stop and turn. One wipe out when Emma went off in front of me.
7 PM

X-C skiing 1:30:00 [1] 8.22 km (10:57 / km) +196m 9:47 / km

Aim was a night ski up Nevelfjell to see the northern lights. failed on both accounts but had a brilliant ski. The off piste ski to the top was icy and windy, so we abandoned before the top. The pisted trails down were great fun though. Lots and lots of clothes on, stayed warm but wouldn't have wanted to be standing around too long.

Tuesday Mar 13, 2018 #

10 AM

X-C skiing 5:30:00 [1] 34.88 km (9:28 / km) +757m 8:32 / km

No snow-plough yet so back down our private trail (now named MD-Ski). Cracking day of blue skies and little wind. Back up to Nordseter for a cake via another stop at the supermarket in Sjusjoen. Had my second (un-pisted) fall of the week when I failed to see a snow drift that Nick had just told me about...

Monday Mar 12, 2018 #

9 AM

X-C skiing 2:30:00 [1] 11.51 km (13:02 / km) +316m 11:28 / km

15cm of snow last night so not able to get the cars out, therefore had to ski from the cabin. However, as the nearest ski trail was 1.5km away it made for some trail bashing. Good fun but snow so deep it was hard to get up when you inevitably ended up in it. Back to Nordseter cafe for more cake.
1 PM

X-C skiing 2:30:00 [1] 18.61 km (8:04 / km) +314m 7:26 / km

Group split after lunch and Nick, Clare and I headed to Sjusjoen to find a supermarket. Eventually found it (complete with rows of x-c skis outside!). Really fun trip back, much of which along a narrow un-pisted trail, didn't notice the best part of 10kg of shopping on my back either. Worn off wax at the end made for very difficult back up the trail we forged this morning. (Ended up getting back before the other group as they took an accidental detour onto the Olympic tracks...).

Sunday Mar 11, 2018 #

10 AM

X-C skiing 1:15:00 [1] 6.19 km (12:07 / km) +92m 11:17 / km

First proper x-c ski in 25 years. So nice to be on skis with wax, groomed trails , plenty of fresh snow and cold weather. Rest of the gang new to skiing so lots of stopping, waiting and turning around.
2 PM

X-C skiing 2:15:00 [1] 13.9 km (9:43 / km) +291m 8:48 / km

Longer afternoon loop (after excellent cake at Nordseter cafe) with Mark, Clare, Emma and Nick. First fall, trying to parallel turn heading down a hill when I crossed the skis.

Saturday Mar 10, 2018 #

6 PM

Strength exercises 15:00 [1]

Made it to a cold and very snowy Lillehammer. No time for running today (and nowhere available locally due to the volume of snow, but spent a bit of time shoveling the stuff in order to make enough parking space.

Friday Mar 9, 2018 #

1 PM

Run - Road 28:04 [2] 5.73 km (4:54 / km) +221m 4:06 / km
shoes: Asics trail (orange)

Lunchtime run with Nicky arounf Roath Park. Easy pace but nice to fit a run in on a busy day of doing stuff. Started the watch a bit before it found satellites, but was never anywhere near Barry!

Thursday Mar 8, 2018 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 32:52 [2] 12.97 km (2:32 / km) +30m 2:30 / km

IW. Straightforward, nothing much to say about this.
7 PM

Run - Terrain 57:00 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (25:00 @2) + (15:00 @3) + (2:00 @4) 8.4 km (6:47 / km) +170m 6:10 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2017 (blue)

Evening run around Gelli Gaer Common with Mark, John and Nicky. Still loads of snow in the lanes but on the open land it was mostly gone. Very enjoyable and social trot.

Wednesday Mar 7, 2018 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 33:22 [2] 12.98 km (2:34 / km) +28m 2:33 / km

HFW. A whole day with no punctures.
6 PM

Bike - Road 33:03 [2] 12.67 km (2:37 / km) +59m 2:33 / km

IW. Chilly but not cold. Still quite a bit of snow on the trail in Harley Park.

Tuesday Mar 6, 2018 #

6 PM

Run - Trail 1:41:00 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (36:00 @2) + (36:00 @3) + (12:00 @4) + (2:00 @5) 15.8 km (6:24 / km) +401m 5:40 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2017 (blue)

No cycling today so no chance of getting a puncture. Actually not, got home and discovered that eh tube that I had changed had gone down... (Old dodgy puncture repair to blame).

Opted to be environmentally friendly and run to the MDC run. Got there 4 minutes late to find that everyone had scarpered already. Caught them on the first hill nut having to run with a backpack as I couldn't leave it in a car as planned.

Lovely evening, clear and cool with excellent views. A few drifts around meant that being hit with a snowball was regularly a danger. Also opted to run to Alan's after we finished the run, though it was a bit further than i had in my head and my bruised quad didn't appreciate the extra road. Plenty of excellent food was had.

Update on the body that an orienteer found during my event at Castell Coch: https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/glen...

Monday Mar 5, 2018 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 45:11 [2] 12.7 km (3:33 / km) +36m 3:30 / km

IW. Not sure what to expect as still plenty of snow about, so opted to head down the main road through Whitchurch rather than along the sheltered Taff trail. At least I didn't get a puncture today... Instead the tube exploded and ripped a hole in the sidewall of the tyre... Less than a km from home so headed back to change bikes... (tyre now in the bin).

Exciting second trip when a bloke came within inches of driving into the side of me on the roundabout over the A470. I was in the middle of the lane in bright orange on an upright bike, I have no idea how he couldn't have seen me as he pulled out from the slip road. Got my heart rate going that did.

Still some snowy bits on the cycleway through Coryton but otherwise it was only the traffic that was annoying. Surprising how much shorter this route is but it's just so frustrating sitting at lights for so long and so often.
6 PM

Bike - Road 36:22 [2] 13.01 km (2:48 / km) +68m 2:43 / km

HFW. Was overheating this morning with the heavy jacket, thermal and leggings, but in the cold rain of this evening I was very glad to have it all. Back on the Taff Trail and very glad that I avoided it this morning as there were a few bits that still had quite a lot of slush on them, despite a warm and wet afternoon.

Major faff changing my tyre and tube, though the new tube had a puncture so then had to change that, eventually discovered that it was my pup that was faulty (it have been over used recently). New one of them now ordered.

Sunday Mar 4, 2018 #

1 PM

Run - Trail 1:06:23 [2] 9.38 km (7:04 / km) +325m 6:02 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons 14

Another slow plod in the snow, much wetter today though and was slush on the roads and main trails, offset by being a lovely day, even with sunshine. Still some nice bits of snow in the woods - unfortunately the wind has meant that the snow hasn't compressed the brambles. Quad bruise a lot better.

Saturday Mar 3, 2018 #

1 PM

Run - Terrain 56:46 [1] 7.38 km (7:42 / km) +282m 6:28 / km
shoes: VJ Supra 2018

Up the valley to the Black Cock, making tracks in the 15-20cm of snow all the way up, hard work but very nice. Warmer than yesterday and the snow is now quite wet, still trying to snow on top of Craig-yr-Allt as well. Quad bruise quite a bit better than yesterday. Another nice clean of pairs to put in the cupboard!

Friday Mar 2, 2018 #

4 PM

Run - Terrain 1:00:00 [2] 7.02 km (8:33 / km) +294m 7:04 / km
shoes: VJ Supra 14

Wasn't planning on running today as my leg is well bruised, but couldn't resist exploring in the snow. Cold in the wind on the top of the Garth, but next to no snow, plenty in the woods and fields though. Limping meant the downhills were sore and that I couldn't have too much fun.

Thursday Mar 1, 2018 #

7 AM

Run - Road 54:46 [2] 10.45 km (5:14 / km) +49m 5:07 / km
shoes: Asics trail (orange)

IW. Straight down the A470, surprising how much shorter this is than the Taff Trail. On foot as expecting the weather to be too bad to cycle this evening and public transport to fail. Cold wind and snow blowing around all the way in, but nothing much in the way of quantity.

Took a heavy fall just as I stopped my watch at work, slipping on the rubber tactile strips that allow the visually impaired to know there are steps coming up. Very dead quad and limping all day.
5 PM

Run - Trail 1:05:00 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (45:00 @2) 11.05 km (5:53 / km) +79m 5:41 / km
shoes: Asics trail (orange)

HFW. Limping. Leg very sore to start, it got better but was still hurting. As expected, running was the only option to get home, roads nearly empty and trains stopped at lunchtime. Not much snow yet, but starting to build up in drifts along the edges of the roads - saw a film crew filming the very empty A470 near Tong. Looking forward to exploring in the morning.
