2 PM

Run - Trail 2:27:16 intensity: (2:20:00 @2) + (7:16 @3) 19.85 km (7:25 / km) +765m 6:13 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2016

Long run from home with Lucy and Nikki (for the first half). Got the best of the day and it was lovely to be out, quite happy with the easy pace as I wasn't feeling very bouncy at all. Saw a couple with an MDC vest on, twice, but no idea who they were.

Thursday Sep 29, 2016 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 33:05 [2] 12.98 km (2:33 / km) +19m 2:32 / km

IW. Body not responding well to the early morning and not enough sleep. No domestic heating appliances lying around today.
5 PM

Bike - Road 33:45 [2] 11.25 km (3:00 / km) +63m 2:55 / km

HFW. Feeling wrecked, glad to be on a 4 day week. Wind wasn't kind.

Wednesday Sep 28, 2016 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 31:42 [2] 12.89 km (2:28 / km) +31m 2:26 / km

IW. All going well until I cycled into a radiator. Yes, you read that right, deposited in the middle of a lane by some fecking cowboy fly-tipper. Hit it hard but somehow didn't get a flat.
5 PM

Bike - Road 30:40 [3] 12.82 km (2:24 / km) +48m 2:21 / km

HFW. Uneventful ride home but moving okay. Forgot that I was very nearly taken out by a lady opening a car door without looking yesterday. Gave her a bit of a fright.

Tuesday Sep 27, 2016 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 30:15 [3] 12.96 km (2:20 / km) +36m 2:18 / km

IW. Legs knew that they were used yesterday and didn't want to wake up in general.
5 PM

Bike - Road 30:37 [3] 12.65 km (2:25 / km) +60m 2:22 / km

HFW. Nice through town but just enough wind being unhelpful to be annoying.
6 PM

Run - Trail 1:15:39 intensity: (2:00 @1) + (25:00 @2) + (35:00 @3) + (12:00 @4) + (1:39 @5) 11.31 km (6:41 / km) +481m 5:31 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2016

MDC around Mynydd Llwyd, evening didn't look very promising but when we headed out the sun was out and the wind died down. Went exploring to the north-west first and found some nice tracks, then dropped through the woods to have a good climb to finish. Really enjoyed it.

Monday Sep 26, 2016 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 32:49 [2] 13.01 km (2:31 / km) +31m 2:30 / km

IW. Nowhere near as wet as feared and almost feeling like normal.
6 PM

Bike - Road 30:36 [3] 12.91 km (2:22 / km) +49m 2:20 / km

HFW. Almost got a squirrel, scarred the bejeus out of me. That after almost standing on a wee hedgehog last night. Actually shifting reasonably well for once.
7 PM

Strength exercises 5:00 [1]

Sunday Sep 25, 2016 #

6 PM

Run - Trail 53:22 [3] 8.71 km (6:07 / km) +292m 5:15 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2016

Bit better again, but still not in the mood for running. Got caught in a shower at the end of the run and the Saloon's really are truly awful on wed surfaces. Really nice evening (prior to the rain).

Saturday Sep 24, 2016 #

6 PM

Run - Trail 39:09 [3] 7.1 km (5:31 / km) +178m 4:54 / km
shoes: Asics Trabuco 12 WR

Felt much better this evening and was running away nicely enough (lovely mild evening) but also very glad that I wasn't racing, 40 minutes was far enough.

Friday Sep 23, 2016 #

10 AM

Run - Trail 42:49 [2] 6.01 km (7:07 / km) +288m 5:45 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2016

Easy up the Garth but body still nothing like right after last weeks abuse, so no Black Mountains for me tomorrow.

Thursday Sep 22, 2016 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 30:25 [2] 12.97 km (2:21 / km) +35m 2:19 / km

IW. Jacket on again but actually mild enough.
3 PM

Bike - Road 27:15 [2] 12.08 km (2:15 / km) +49m 2:13 / km

HFW. Almost taken out by a driver turning across my side of the road to turn right. Never even glanced up in my direction, must have been relying on periphery version to be able to see something as big as a car but forgetting about cyclists. Only as far as the station as meeting Mum and Penny.

Wednesday Sep 21, 2016 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 32:42 [1] 12.93 km (2:32 / km) +28m 2:30 / km
(sick)

IW. Much improved this morning, not quite feeling human yet but not too far off either. Steady speed and in a jacket (sleeveless) for the first time since summer).
5 PM

Bike - Road 33:29 [1] 12.75 km (2:38 / km) +56m 2:34 / km
(sick)

HFW. Nearly right now, nearly. Traffic mental, seems to be getting worse every day since the schools started back. Glad that I can just glide by it and then disappear on the Taff Trail.

Tuesday Sep 20, 2016 #

12 PM

Bike - Road 36:18 [1] 12.74 km (2:51 / km) +21m 2:50 / km
(sick)

IW, somewhat latter than usual as I appear to have tried to poison myself (accidentally) last night. Knew things weren't right straight after dinner when my tummy started bubbling and grumbling. Hoped to sleep it off with an early night but was up before midnight and hugging the toilet...

Felt a whole lot better after that and got up with the intention of going to work but soon realised that I was still well off colour and a bit weak so when back to bed. Got a solid 4 hours sleep before very slowly cycling in.
5 PM

Bike - Road 37:24 [1] 12.97 km (2:53 / km) +69m 2:49 / km
(sick)

HFW. Still a bit rough but improving. Despite cycling as slow as possible I still manged to pass half a dozen people and no one passed me.

Monday Sep 19, 2016 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 31:17 [2] 12.46 km (2:31 / km) +33m 2:29 / km

IW. Very heavy mist, no wind but got quite damp. Certainly not feeling like summer anymore but still in shorts and T.
6 PM

Bike - Road 33:02 [2] 11.92 km (2:46 / km) +45m 2:43 / km

HFW. Much better afternoon and legs actually working okay on the bike (less so on stairs).

Sunday Sep 18, 2016 #

5 PM

Bike - Static 21:05 [2]

Sat on the turbo trainer for 2 hours to loosen the legs out. However, when I looked at my watch it had only been 20 minutes... Quads pretty sore and neck and shoulders also feeling a bit tender.

Saturday Sep 17, 2016 #

10 AM

Run - Terrain 4:24:08 [3] 24.76 km (10:40 / km) +1680m 7:58 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons 11

Transfan Part 1: Cwm-llwch to OFD. Amazing morning and really warm and everyone even on time. Nice relaxed pace up Pen-y-fan (it's much bigger from this side) was much welcome as my legs were feeling rough. Stuck together with Chris, Hannah and Dave as we were splitting off after Fan Gyhirych to go through a cave...

Much the same up and over Fan Fawr, Llia and Nedd with my legs just not wanting to run. They weren't any better going down despite the slow pace - can two weeks off running really de-condition them this much?
3 PM

Strength exercises 3:00:00 intensity: (2:30:00 @0) + (30:00 @1)

A through cave trip at OFD (from where the part 1 GPS ends to where part 2 starts). Not having been in anything other than a show cave before I assumed that we wouldn't be doing anything too difficult or small... First hour or so was nice (once over the slippery rocks at the entrance) following a series of twisty steams (although full of deep holes, several that required a bit of a dip). Then it got tight. Lots of crawling (knees hurting), some wiggling on my belly and even a section on by back which exited half way up a sizable crag. Definitely an experience, and a good one that I'm very glad that I did, but not sure that I'd call it enjoyable.
6 PM

Run - Terrain 2:34:54 [2] 14.3 km (10:50 / km) +690m 8:44 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons 11

Transfar Part 2: OFD to Llanddeusant. Eventually got going again after getting all the caving gear off and having some food just in time to see the sun going down. The long, long climb up Fan Hir was matched with some lovely evening weather and a beautiful moon rise. All walking now, partly due to tiredness but also to stay together in the darkening gloom.

Had to get the lights on the top pf Fan Hir and had a lovely walk across to fan Brycheiniog and drop down to towards Llyn y Fan Fach as by now we'd decided to skip the last hill and just head to the finish. Nice run down the hill int eh dark and then walk along the road waiting for Mark (and Clare) to come and collect us. Joyful occasion when they turned up with chips!

Friday Sep 16, 2016 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 31:30 [2] 12.86 km (2:27 / km) +31m 2:25 / km

IW. Not feeling awake this morning and cycling feeling hard work. Left hamstring a little sore, as it was yesterday - need to keep an eye on that. Nearly sunny but cooler.
4 PM

Bike - Road 34:41 [2] 12.87 km (2:42 / km) +43m 2:39 / km

HFW. At last a bit of blue sky, unfortunately it was accompanied by and unexpected and unwelcome head wind. Moving very slow.

Thursday Sep 15, 2016 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 32:47 [2] 13.1 km (2:30 / km) +26m 2:29 / km

IW. A bit cooler but still a nice morning - apart from dropping the chain twice again.
6 PM

Bike - Road 32:46 [2] 12.87 km (2:33 / km) +52m 2:30 / km

HFW. Still nice out, nothing special on the sunny front but mild and dry. Going to have to fiddle with the chain this evening.

Wednesday Sep 14, 2016 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 32:39 [2] 13.12 km (2:29 / km) +31m 2:28 / km

IW. Another mild and nice morning after a bit of rain overnight. Not so speedy today. Almost taken out by a dog appearing from nowhere and running right across the trail while its owner amble past.
6 PM

Bike - Road 33:13 [2] 13.0 km (2:33 / km) +52m 2:30 / km

HFW. Chain came off twice, too loose and no adjustment left in the hanger - need to get the crank changed.

Tuesday Sep 13, 2016 #

7 AM

Bike - Road 29:34 [3] 12.88 km (2:18 / km) +30m 2:16 / km

IW. Nice to be on a speedy bike and was quite awake for once at this time. Very warm.
7 PM

Bike - Road 30:51 [2] 12.64 km (2:26 / km) +46m 2:24 / km

HFW. Too late to make the MDC run, still warm but everything all wet after a day of thunderstorms - glad I didn't push the washing out.

Monday Sep 12, 2016 #

5 PM

Run - Trail 36:04 [2] 5.77 km (6:15 / km) +170m 5:27 / km
shoes: La Sportiva Crosslite (5)

Very tired after an easy but long drive home from Oban (just over 8 hours). Was planning on breaking the journey with a run at Shap but decided to push on and miss the traffic. Pleased that I got myself out as my head really didn't want to.

11 AM

Walk 1:25:26 intensity: (1:05:26 @0) + (20:00 @1) 6.27 km (13:37 / km) +116m 12:28 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2016

Spent the morning exploring Glenfinnan, a very pretty place. Took in all the viewpoints of the viaduct and the Bonny Prince Charlie monument, but unfortunately missed the steam train on the viaduct (but did see it at the station). Relaxing and very nice morning.
3 PM

Walk 1:11:09 intensity: (51:09 @0) + (20:00 @1) 3.56 km (20:00 / km) +120m 17:07 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2016

Really nice walk up Glen Nevis to Steall Falls. Again very popular but was enough to get your own space as well. Had fun on the rope bridge.

Saturday Sep 10, 2016 #

10 AM

Walk 4:00:58 intensity: (3:00:58 @0) + (45:00 @1) + (15:00 @2) 9.96 km (24:12 / km) +932m 16:29 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2016

At last a decent day but still pretty windy. Headed to the east of the Cuillin hills to do Bla Bheinn. Nice hill, good path up the glen until it got steep and then some spectacular cliffs and a little easy scrambling. Unfortunately the cloud wouldn't budge from the summit (until back at the car that is) but it wasn't a problem and only ruined the view. Fun little scramble to to the the south top and then a long descent down rough scree. Very enjoyable.

Across to Mallaig and on to Glenfinnian in the evening (really stunning drive) and went for a walk to the viaduct.

Friday Sep 9, 2016 #

10 AM

Walk 3:00:08 intensity: (2:15:08 @0) + (45:00 @1) 12.04 km (14:57 / km) +81m 14:28 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2016

Woke up to driving rain and gale force winds with the forecast due to get worse... Opted on a low level walk along Loch Sligachan out once set out the clouds cleared so turned around and headed along Glen Sligachan instead. Missed the start of the path which resulted in lots of bog paddling and wet feet.

Rain came in after finishing and spent the afternoon doing things that had walls and roofs connected with them.

Thursday Sep 8, 2016 #

9 AM

Walk 2:11:55 intensity: (1:41:55 @0) + (30:00 @1) 7.06 km (18:41 / km) +406m 14:31 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2016

Quiraing (on Skye now). Lovely walk but slightly marred by wind and then by rain on the return, meaning that it wasn't worth going up to visit the Table. Nonetheless a very pretty walk and justifiably popular.
11 AM

Walk 1:28:10 intensity: (1:08:10 @0) + (20:00 @1) 5.26 km (16:46 / km) +330m 12:46 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2016

The Old Mann of Storr. Had to be done. Surprised at how big it was, as in, like huge! 45m or something. Wind, rain and swirling cloud made views difficult but all eliminated most of the tourists, especially up close.
4 PM

Walk 52:47 intensity: (37:47 @0) + (15:00 @1) 3.34 km (15:49 / km) +176m 12:31 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2016

The Fairy Pools, again a very popular spot and again not the best weather with cloud hiding the Cuillin Hills behind. Worth a visit though.

Wednesday Sep 7, 2016 #

9 AM

Walk 1:16:43 intensity: (56:43 @0) + (20:00 @1) 5.85 km (13:07 / km) +31m 12:46 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2016

Yesterday's wind had gone but unfortunately replaced by cloud and sporadic showers. Nice little loop around the coastal lochs in Lochmaddy before the boat back to Skye.

Tuesday Sep 6, 2016 #

Walk 1:05:48 intensity: (45:48 @0) + (20:00 @1) 4.33 km (15:12 / km) +57m 14:16 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2016

Beach No.1, Luskentyre. Tide mostly in but enough beach to walk on, cloudy but with plenty of sunny spells and no one else around.
11 AM

Walk 1:05:48 intensity: (45:48 @0) + (20:00 @1) 5.15 km (12:47 / km) +21m 12:31 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2016

Beach No.2, Traigh na Cleabhaig. Considered adding the adjoining hills as well but it was steep and wouldn't have allowed lunch before the boat to Uist. Nice amble along the coast to a ruined church. Amazing luch at the Temple Cafe after - 5 stars everyday.
3 PM

Walk 1:15:00 intensity: (55:00 @0) + (20:00 @1) 4.7 km (15:57 / km) +16m 15:41 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2016

Beach No.3, Berneray. Birthplace of a 7'9'' giant who went to Nova Scotia. Don't know why he left as he lived on another cracking beach.
4 PM

Walk 1:05:48 intensity: (45:48 @0) + (20:00 @1) 4.75 km (13:51 / km) +13m 13:40 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2016

Beach No.4, Hornais. White sand and completely empty: a few footprints from birds and some bits of seaweed the only other things on the beach. Beautiful. Water pretty cold though (paddled). Apparently a picture of this beach was (mistakenly) used in a Thai tourist brochure.

Cliff walk from the blackhouse village on the north coast of Lewis. Stunning cliffs and lovely underfoot terrain. Saw a few seals in a bay below.

Sunday Sep 4, 2016 #

9 AM

Bike - Mountain 3:29:39 [1] 20.59 km (10:11 / km) +797m 8:32 / km

Rhenigidale loop on Harris. Don't know why this is so hyped, it's not like there's lovely single track weaving through stunning mountains, past lochs and then a roller-caster ride along coastal cliffs with views straight into the clear water and then an epic down hill stretch to finish with... Best off keeping well away.

Out in a rush as the midges were fierce, but once moving and they were left behind it was a lovely morning to be out and the sun cleared on the climb towards Rhenigidale. Aside from the steep push up the zig-zags from Loch Trolamarig the trail was great riding. Respect to Ciara for getting around this as someonw relatively new to mountain biking.
3 PM

Walk 30:00 [1] 8.83 km (3:24 / km) +312m 2:53 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2016

2:45 walk out to a stunning beach on the west coast of Harris. Amazing (and another quality middle area), the sun even came out and a sea eagle took off just in front of us, very special. Also passed an island where a German inventor had tried to deliver post by rocket... (unsuccessfully, unsurprisingly).

Saturday Sep 3, 2016 #

1 PM

Walk 20:00 [1] 6.33 km (3:10 / km) +123m 2:53 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2016

2 hours walk around Scalpay. Headed to the drier bit of the island and it turned out to be a good idea, checked out the lighthouse and had a very nice amble. Terrain is very like west Cork and would have madea cracking middle area.
5 PM

Run - Trail 1:14:51 [3] 11.58 km (6:28 / km) +199m 5:57 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2016

Waited for the worst of the rain to stop and headed out for an explore from the bunkhouse. Some trails, quite a bit of road and a fair bit of mountain. Really enjoyed myself, especially once in the terrain. Not as rough as Cork and lots of lakes, much fun - would make a great classic area.

Bike - Mountain 4:21:36 intensity: (50:00 @1) + (3:00:00 @2) + (30:00 @3) + (1:36 @4) 76.64 km (3:25 / km) +1582m 3:06 / km

Bealach na Ba and Applecross circuit. Why, after living in Scotland for 5 years, do I wait until I am living at the wrong end of a different country before I do this? Well worth the time and the effort.

To avoid bringing two bikes and potential gearing issues I did this on my mountain bike, which, aside from being quite a bit slower, was a good call as it was more comfortable and gave a better view, also made the climbs easy enough.

Headed clockwise as there was mist due on the pass later in the day (it didn't materialise) and there was a fierce south-westerly which I wanted to avoid as much as possible.

The climb up Bealach na Ba (Britain's highest pass apparently) was actually pretty easy, steady but not a steep gradient until very near the top , even then it wasn't all that steep. Added a bonus bit of climb by taking the track up to the masts on the mountain top.

The coast road was lovely and I stopped many, many times to take photos - disappointing lack of tea shops though. The A road back at the end was nice apart from the head wind after km 69, but I did pretty well for this to be the only bad section.

Quality day out and very glad that I did it at my own pace rather than signing up for the Sportive tomorrow. Another thing ticked off the bucket list.

Run - Trail 1:08:58 [3] 13.88 km (4:58 / km) +142m 4:44 / km
shoes: Salomon Fellraiser 2016

Really enjoyable trail run around Loch an Eilean in my brand new, and very speedy, pair of Salomon trail shoes. Legs felt amazing and this was mostly effortless (although it was admittedly pretty flat). Wanted to explore more but time didn't allow.
