Run - Trail 1:08:01 intensity: (4:00 @1) + (12:00 @2) + (35:00 @3) + (12:00 @4) + (5:01 @5) 10.77 km (6:19 / km) +540m 5:03 / km
shoes: Adidas Kanadia TR4

New route up (and down) Tor y Foel with MDC, up was successful, down less so... Big crowd out enjoying the amazingly hot evening. Really nice to be out in the hills in weather like this, although my legs weren't feeling to joyous about the occasion.

Bike - Road 31:46 intensity: (12:13 @0) + (4:13 @1) + (12:49 @2) + (2:31 @3) 12.98 km (2:27 / km) +41m 2:25 / km

IW. Lovely mild morning and the work at Radyr weir is yet to commence so no diversion to follow. Sometimes simple things make the world a happier place.
5 PM

Bike - Road 30:31 intensity: (5:36 @0) + (10:23 @1) + (11:31 @2) + (3:01 @3) 12.89 km (2:22 / km) +46m 2:20 / km

HFW. Perfect temperature to be out and about (not so sure that tomorrow will be as enjoyable). Nice and easy until the 'hill' up to Tonwynlais when I pushed on a bit.

Strength exercises 7:00 [3]

Need to get back into doing this - just a few target ankle and core exercises and some foam rolereringing tonight.

Harvester relay, Rushmore, Leg 3, 8.5km, 21 controls.
Area description from the clubs website: "Roughly three square kilometres, it is remote and mostly very runnable but has an extensive path network. There are a number of penned areas allowing for forest regeneration and it is mainly deciduous with undulating contours. A very nice area." Has whoever wrote this ever been to the area????

Team: Will, JonX, me, Ross, Roger, JonM & Daniel. Steady runs from Will and Jon put me out in about 4th about 5 minutes down. Had been warned about the vegetation and to run extra distance around paths before so stuck to that. Unfortunately it made little difference once in the circle as there was still nettles and brambles all over the shop.

Started slow but clean enough (scary 2m nettles to get through on the way to #4). Realsied soon enough that many of the tracks (big and small) were very hard to find in the dark, which was a bit of an issue as once you lost them you were consumed by undergrowth. Took safe routes but lost several minutes at each of #6, 8 and 10 as well of bits of time at #9 and 12. Was running with A SLOW guy all this time as just couldn't get a bit enough gap to break away before hunting for the next control.

Things got worse at #13 when a huge umapped track completely through me, losing time on the leg and then hunting in the bracken for a pit. Caught the SLOW guy up again at the spectator (#17), lost a bit on #18 and got a bit of a lead by #20 but then knocked my head torch off on the way to the last control and consequentially missed it.

Hugely frustrating run, just couldn't find anything cleanly, lost in the region of 8-10 minutes and came back in much the same position as I went out. On the positive side there was lots of easy running as I was actually moving reasonably well on a lot of it and I still managed to enjoy Oing in the dark, but while I appreciate all the work that went into this event, why can't someone put a Harvester on a decent map that's not full of nettles and/or bracken for a change?

Thankfully the competition ran out of depth later in the night allowing JonM to overturn a big time difference and to give Daniel a safe enough lead, which he them smashed to give us a clear win.

Easy trot with Grump, RogerG and DanielS in the hills near to the event. Planning on 20-30 minutes but route was a bit longer than planned, so we extended it a but further... Feeling a bit tired starting but grand once warmed up. Cracking day all in; good company, banter and weather.

Note

Some good memories of WOC 99 (thanks TIO) - not sure about the going blond bit this year though....
3 PM

Run - Trail 2:30:13 intensity: (1:55 @0) + (33:30 @1) + (1:20:15 @2) + (30:39 @3) + (3:54 @4) 25.28 km (5:57 / km) +643m 5:16 / km
ahr:127 max:155 shoes: Adidas Kanadia TR4

This was dead easy, didn't feel like a long run at all, maybe that's because I haven't run since the weekend? Not the most exciting of routes but the promised wet morning was sunny and the promised dry afternoon was wet so as I watched the sun disappear into the cloud I opted to run from home rather than venturing to the hills. Mad humid, but not all that warm, odd.

ahr:114 max:150

IW. Passed a sign saying that a part of the Taff Trail is going to be closed from the end of the month for 40 weeks! The only possible diversion here is on dirt tracks which will be rough and wet in the winter and the only other alternative is a long way round on hilly roads :-( Not pleased.
6 PM

Bike - Road 30:04 intensity: (5:46 @0) + (6:13 @1) + (10:13 @2) + (6:02 @3) + (1:50 @4) 13.05 km (2:18 / km) +46m 2:16 / km
ahr:116 max:153

Started off very slowly, enjoying the sunny evening and in no rush, but somehow I got progressively faster as I went on, so I was properly ragging it by the end. Don't know why.

Bike - Road 35:03 [2] 14.13 km (2:29 / km) +49m 2:26 / km

HFW via a massage. Quads felt better for it but my previously non-sore calfs were hurting after. Nice and easy home.

HFW via Bassaleg and Draethen, taking it nice and easy on a lovely mild and sunny evening and very nice to be out, shame that there was so much traffic about. Legs tired on the hills.

IW. Timed it well to hit a shower as soon as I left home, not too bad and all dried up once out of the valley. Must have been a tail wind as it was surprisingly easy.

I don't know why, but Nick opted to walk around today which left the automatic qualification spot for WOC open to the first Irish finisher. I was the first Irish finisher... Thinking to be done, had completely dismissed WOC as I am getting a bit old for such carry-on and there are some promising younger runners in Ireland, but I am running okay in the long races this year and I do love O in Scotland.

The race wasn't actually very good, never felt strong (but I guess no one did after yesterday) and I was scrappy in a lot of places, dropping around 5 minutes in total - including twisting my ankle which caused me to have trouble finding a crossing point and consider retiring.

Again the area was really runnable with virtually no water underfoot, thankfully the hills were much smaller today so I managed to run just about all of them, didn't get on very well with the veg mapping in the pine woods though. Really needed water by the drinks point and also had a gel, but then felt blaugh for the next km before picking up again for the finish.

Not been here before so was looking forward to discovering a new bit of the Scottish countryside. Was bit more vertical than I would have liked but otherwise a nice area and was surprisingly runnable when not struggling up the copious hilly bits (note to Grump: a few too many hilly bits!).

Pretty good first two-thirds of the race, running well enough and pushing on with only a few wee wobbles. Then got into the circle at #16 and couldn't find the crag - visible open forest with an attackpoint less than 100m away should have made it easy. Tried three more times before stumbling upon it where I had been all along. Something iffy in there and dropped about 3.5 mins.

Then lost another 2 mins in the next two controls and decided not to bother pushing hard on the hill at the end. A disappointing finish to what was nearly a good run. Ended up 4th Irish I think, a minute or two down on Conor and ColmM and about 9 on Nick - minus the time loss at the end I would have been very pleased.

HFW. Well not from work, as I went to a circus in town afterwards. Aside from being continually dived bombed by bats it was nice cycling in the dark again - with a bit of mist to give it an extra bit of atmosphere.

Don't know where my watch picked up a heart rate from as my monitor was in my bag.

MDC run from Neaudd Reservoir, cracking evening and was feeling pretty good, good enough to join Chris and Ben for the side trip up Fan-y-Big. Then onward to Cribyn and Pen-y-Fan before and then a nice tumble which not only gave me a particularly nice patch of gravel rash all down my right thigh but all finished my shoes off. Hobbling back from there but things (shoe and body) held together just about well enough to get me home. Tough run but very enjoyable.

NB log hit 100,000 views yesterday and I'm top of the AP rankings - can life get any better than this?

Checking out the map and areas to use for the SWOC event on Saturday that I'm planning... Lovely evening and the good news is that the bracken is still really short - bad news was that I've had to update just about every path on the map - it now bares some resemblance to reality.

Note
(rest day)

Day of travelling, at least I got home at a reasonable time - unlike Faye and Greg whose incoming plane melted its tryes and brakes on landing, delaying them by several hours, they then boarded and got delayed by a thunderstorm for an hour and when ready to go there was a fire of some sort which brought the fire engine out...

With Greg up to Rennes le Chateau, where he turned around as was feeling a bit off. Hot heading out but seemed to cool once we got on the hill and I actually managed to enjoy the rest of the run (that's not a reflection of Greg not being there!). Got chased by a dog (well, a very friendly puppy) and saw a snake.

Nice loop around Crux and Fa with Greg, left it late to cool down a bit but it was still over 30. Really struggling, especially on the hills, but thankfully Greg was kind to me and didn't push the pace at all - not that I'd have been able to go with him if he did. Think this was a sensible pace with my tired legs and dislike of the heat. Will hopefully feel better over the next few days.

Note
(rest day)

Knackered from an early morning, three days in the mountains and stupidly hot weather. Opted to sleep rather than to try any exercise.

Shamrock O-Ringen, Day 3, Derrycluvane, M21E, 7.9km, 300m, 20 controls.

Another day and another really fun course in the west Cork hills - wish I could do more of this (though not immediately as my legs were toast today). Had a handy lead after the first two days so had no pressure on me in the chase and knew a clean run would be enough to stay ahead.

Struggled on all the hills today, but the nav was still working so didn't have any cause for worry - overshot #9 by about 10 seconds but was otherwise clean. Some fun long legs, some across ridges and with plenty of changes in direction it was another great course. Looking forward to the next Shamrock already!

Straight down the hill in order to keep warm - I have so far forgot to mention that the weather today was minging with both strong winds and driving rain, not a day for standing around.
