Note
(injured) (sick)

Day on the computer hoping that my recovering cough will be gone by the weekend.

Note
(injured) (sick)

Went to see Doctor today to get a referral to get my shoulder and back checked out again as their recovery seems to have plateaued months ago. Well fed up of still not being able to do quite a lot of stuff this long after.

Note
(injured) (sick)

Head now cleared just the good old cough to content with now. Hoped will be cleared by the time I make my veteran debut at the weekend…

Here’s the same bit of map for Focus showing (approximately) the route I took mapping. Considering this is so recent I can’t remember much of it.

Note
(injured) (sick)

Left the party last night with the realisation that I had picked up a cold, boo, so unless I count the 45 minute walk home in the small hours I’m not going to be training today.

9 AM

Run - Trail 55:00 [2] 7.5 km (7:20 / km) +175m 6:34 / km
(injured) shoes: Asics 2140 (10)

The big day for Miss Austin and Master Kendall. Ceremony was just after lunch so had to get out early. Ran with Toni around the Labyrinth (which wasn’t as flat as we were expecting (hoping) but would be well good for MicrO, then ran back from Quillan along the road – how do road runners not go stone mad??? Also a wee bit of activity in the evening. Excellent day and congratulations to Mr and Mrs K.
10 AM

Run - Road 43:30 [3] 9.9 km (4:24 / km) +25m 4:20 / km
(injured) shoes: Asics 2140 (10)

Run - Orienteering 45:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Adidas Kanadia TR2

Permanent course at Arques; only been on a bit of this area before and was expecting it to be clay hell following some very heavy rain last night. Unfortunately there was still enough rain around to cancel the group picnic but surprisingly it actually made the soft clay easier to run on as there was a bit of grip rather than the usual baked slopes. Lots of fun and some great orienteering. Tired starting but soon forgot about that as I was enjoying it so much.

11 AM

Walk 1:10:00 [1] 10.1 km (6:56 / km) +500m 5:33 / km
(injured) shoes: Adidas Kanadia TR2

Walk with the family and Niall and Clare from the Col Pailheres (3.30hrs). Not quite sunny but not far off either. Such a nice walk this and it was just as good this time.
4 PM

Run - Trail 1:32:00 [3] 16.6 km (5:33 / km) +180m 5:15 / km
(injured) shoes: Adidas Kanadia TR2

After the walk I ran from Col Pailheres to Chioula, it was predominately down hill (started at 2000m and finished at 1500m) but there was more than enough up to remind me of it. Very pleasant ridge to run; I look forward to doing it again.

Wednesday Sep 22, 2010 #

5 PM

Run - Trail 1:14:00 [3] 13.5 km (5:29 / km) +350m 4:51 / km
(injured) shoes: Asics 2140 (10)

Rennes-le-Cheateau Loop with Greg. Very hot evening. Told Greg to run off up the hills as I wouldn’t be able to keep up. I couldn’t. However the combination of an early morning, jet lag, no food and the heat meant that Greg totally bonked for the last 15 minutes. Amusing for me at least!

Tuesday Sep 21, 2010 #

5 PM

Run - Trail 59:20 [3] 11.1 km (5:21 / km) +280m 4:45 / km
(injured) shoes: Asics 2140 (10)

Fa and Crux loop. Greg out tomorrow so didn’t want to run hard as I’ll have him dragging me around then and want to reserve some energy. Beautiful evening and was happy to be out. Hills weren’t being nice to me though.

Monday Sep 20, 2010 #

Walk 1:10:00 [1] 14.5 km (4:50 / km) +650m 3:57 / km
(injured) shoes: Asics 2140 (10)

Walk with the family in the French hills to the east of Axat (3.30hrs). Very pleasant altogether. Found a big cave which was well cool. That was nice as it was a hot day.

Sunday Sep 19, 2010 #

Run - Trail warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.5 km (6:40 / km) +50m 5:43 / km
(injured) shoes: Asics 2140 (10)

1 PM

Run - Orienteering 54:41 [4] 6.2 km (8:49 / km) +310m 7:03 / km
(injured) shoes: Adidas Kanadia TR2

Off to France for Aislinn and Jonny’s wedding. Dead early start (5am) but at least we got there in time for a local O event. Interesting area, mega rough and rocky in places, other bits were green and brambly or covered in brashings but on the whole it was nice. Fulfilled my expectations in struggling on all hills but was otherwise quite happy.
3 PM

Run - Orienteering 20:00 [1] 2.0 km (10:00 / km)
(injured) shoes: Asics 2140 (10)

Back out into the roughest area to collect controls. They’d used plastic electric fence poles to attached the SI units to so carrying more than a few wasn’t all that hard.

Note
(injured)

Was planning on a run when got to Faye’s but she talked me out of it. Nasty girl.

Friday Sep 17, 2010 #

Note

Here’s an interesting (or not) little example of mapping styles. I accidentally overlapped with Brian’s mapping from the last Shamrock in Kilcrohane, therefore the same bit of ground has been mapped by both of us. The grey in the background is the photogrammetric base map.

Run - Terrain 1:01:00 [2] 10.8 mi (5:39 / mi) +150m 5:25 / mi
weight:69.8kg (injured) shoes: Adidas Kanadia TR2

Morning run with GG from Burbage Mines across to Redmires, a big loop through the unforbidden wood (which has some real nice bits in it) and a jaunt across the sheep tracks from the pole straight back to the mines. It was lovely and sloppy and wet and I liked it much (No, that’s not what she said).

No time today, but need to sort myself out over the next few as I'm after getting right lazy.

Note
(injured)

Was planning on doing something. Wanted to do something. But didn't do anything. I hate it when I do this. But obviously not enough to actually do anything.

Monday Sep 13, 2010 #

Note
(injured)

Had one of those days that it took a long time to do nothing. Days after time away always seem to be like this, especially when I don’t have to go to work.

Sunday Sep 12, 2010 #

Note

Late night and late morning. Nice day. Sunny and mild. Spent it indoors.

Saturday Sep 11, 2010 #

3 PM

Run - Trail 30:00 [2] 5.5 km (5:27 / km) +75m 5:06 / km
(injured) shoes: Asics 2140 (10)

Afternoon run with Tom Edwards from Knaresborough, very easy and just to get the legs moving really. Up for Jonny’s stag, so late night last night followed by golf at Crimple Valley this morning. First effort at golf, it is not going feature highly in my activity schedule in the feature – 111 for 9 holes (and there weren’t any obstacles in the way either).

Friday Sep 10, 2010 #

Note
(injured)

Long day travelling back from West Cork and straight up to Knaresborough for Jonny’s Stag. Well tired from the week in the hills so happy to have a day doing nothing energetic.

Long week mapping in West Cork for next year’s Shamrock (4.30 hours today). Beautiful terrain; open and runnable with plenty of detail. Rather void of fauna though; in 55 hours on the mountain I saw 1 rabbit, 2 hares and a herd of wild goats. No sheep, not a single one, what has happened to all the EU grants that kept the sheep farmers in business? Maybe I shouldn’t say anymore though, I don’t want to put all the Welsh off travelling to next year’s event...

Note

Off to Sheep's Head in West Cork for 10 days mapping (next year's Shamrock - make sure that you're there). Looking forward to doing some real terrain.
