Note
(sick)

Worst bit of the cold gone (stuffy head and running nose) but I feel a if I've been beaten up as I ache all over. Poor me.

Note
(sick)

Baa, nasty cold, at least it explains why I felt so tired yesterday. Bummer missing the first circuit session though.

Run - Trail 1:07:00 [1] 11.0 km (6:05 / km)
shoes: Asics Trabuco 10 WR

A very easy jog around Castle Howard with Shane, Fionne, Aislinn, Jonny, Faye and Speaky. Never got fast enough to get warmed up or stretched out and felt tired. But a very enjoyable and social day out and tea afterwards at the castle. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2297867

Saturday Sep 27, 2008 #

Run - Trail 44:45 [2] 9.0 km (4:58 / km)
shoes: Ascis Gel GT 2110

Slow trot around Rivelin. Wonderfully amazing morning and the sunlight through the trees and the reflections on the mills ponds were incredibly beautiful. Tired from past few days so took it easy.

Bike - Road 1:57:00 [3] 50.5 km (2:19 / km)

Road bike out to Baslow via Ringinglow and owler bar and back via Grindleford. Much more energetic than last week and a still morning made it very enjoyable. Feel like a new person, or a least like I used to which is good (I think).

Strength exercises 11:00 [4]

Run - Trail 1:14:00 [3] 13.7 km (5:24 / km)
shoes: Asics Trabuco 10 WR

Loxley and Rivelin hills. Like yesterday, steady but no fireworks physically but felt much better mentally now that I've managed to sort myself out. It's been difficult and I've been an eijit but that's the end now. Now to get my fitness sorted out as well.

Run - Trail 1:12:20 [3] 13.7 km (5:17 / km)
shoes: Asics Trabuco 10 WR

Rivelin dam anti-clockwise. Felt tired but ran steady and slow. Nasty trip in woods (no drugs involved, just intimate contact with a rock).

Run - Road 39:40 [2] 8.1 km (4:54 / km)

Run - Trail 1:29:00 [2] 15.4 km (5:47 / km)
shoes: Asics Trabuco 10 WR

Trot around Chatsworth with Jonny and Aislinn (and Fionne for the first bit), nice day but very busy - saw David Blunkett out with his dog and woman in tow. (Does that get me any points as I have been stuck on 4 forever now?)

Run - Trail 1:10:00 [3] 13.5 km (5:11 / km)
shoes: Asics Trabuco 10 WR

Rivelin Dam. Evening run to maximise rest from yesterday, didn't feel up to much but as it was such a nice evening and I felt grand once out (hamstrings not even tight) I did a longer loop than planned.

Bike - Road 3:20:00 [3] 80.5 km (2:29 / km)

A cycle that I've been wanting to do for a while - Woodhead and Snake via Glossop. Legs still tired from the trek and it took a long while to get any momentum going. Windier than I wanted it to be and the climb up Woodhead into a head wind was hard work and pretty busy with far too many lorries bombing past, but once on the smaller roads it was a great cycle and the climb out of Glossop was actually pretty good. Had a dead patch on the descent towards Hagg Farm but got it together for the climb out of Ladybower. Nice route and cycle but I doubt taht I'll do it again. Hungry and tired now.

Run - Trail 50:05 [2] 9.0 km (5:34 / km)
shoes: Asics Torana

Rivelin with Chris. Got back late from a interesting and worthwhile but I'm sure ultimately unsuccessful interview in Leamington, was hungry and tired with no interest in running. Thankfully Chris got home and wated to run so I supported him on the loop in his bid to break 50 minutes for the first time. The boy did good and only missed it by a few seconds despite it being dark in the wooded sections. Very impressive considering he was taking 70 minutes less than a year ago.

Note
(rest day)

Taking it easy (a bit to maybe) getting back into running. Legs still tired and not up for running though.

Tuesday Sep 16, 2008 #

Run - Trail 45:00 [2] 9.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Ascis Gel GT 2110

Rivelin short loop. Legs still completely dead and stomach tight - will take several days of short runs to get back into any sort of running shape. Hamstrings impossibly stiff.

Monday Sep 15, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

Back in Sheffield. Had planned on an afternoon trot to keep to legs moving but spent the time sorting stuff out. Have to try and get some motivation back and get into some sort of regular running again.

Sunday Sep 14, 2008 #

Run - Trail 1:10:30 [3] 13.1 mi (5:23 / mi)
weight:67kg shoes: Asics Trabuco 10 WR

Rennes-le-Chateau loop with Niall from Esperaza. Really hard to run after the past two weeks, hamstrings incredibly tight and belly also too full. Good to get out and give them a stretch though.

67kg on the parents scales - Whoop! Lightest that I've been for over a decade :)

Saturday Sep 13, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

Aside from a half mile walk to the airport in Bastia with the rucksack, the rest of the day was spent traveling across the south of France to get to the parents place.

Friday Sep 12, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

Recovery day after a great trek. Still managed quite a bit of walking - up and down Calenzana looking for buses that never came (ended up in a taxi), a several mile stroll along the beach in Calvi and then a quick two mile hike with the pack from the train station to the hotel in the evening. Nothing compared to the past two weeks.

Walk 1:10:00 [0] 12.0 km (5:50 / km) +235m 5:19 / km

GR20 Day11 (4.30hrs). Refuge d'Ortu di u Piobbu to Calenzana. What an easy last day, skipped down the very easy descent in just over 4 hours, by far the least technical walking of the trip and the easiest grade of descent ? why do people say that it?s so hard coming the other way?

Amazing walk and quite probably deserving of the title of Europe?s toughest trek. Very lucky with the weather and the craic throughout was good, even on the long days when we were all completely knackered. Well worth doing. 99hours and 57 minutes for the whole trek (190km and somewhere between 12,000m and 19,000m of climb, depending who you read), including all breaks and the swim (about 2 hours a day).

Walk 1:30:00 [0] 8.0 km (11:15 / km) +1050m 6:48 / km

GR20 Day10 (6.00hrs). Refuge de Carrozzu to Refuge d'Ortu di u Piobbu. Although just another normal day it was actually quite a hard one. Plenty of climb and a very un-nice rocky descent. Early arriving though and loads of time to enjoy the views and sun at the refuge on a baking hot day. Could have made it to the end today but opted for the lazy option of enjoying the sun and our time in the mountains.

Tuesday Sep 9, 2008 #

Walk 1:30:00 [0] 6.0 km (15:00 / km) +710m 9:25 / km

GR20 Day9 (5.30hrs). Haut Asco to Refuge de Carrozzu. First ?normal? day today since the first, had made up all the necessarily days so can take it easy. Brutally steep climb for the first 90 minutes and then a long drop back down to the Refuge. Stopped to dip in the river just before camping and enjoy the sun.

Monday Sep 8, 2008 #

Walk 2:30:00 [0] 15.0 km (10:00 / km) +1300m 6:59 / km

GR20 Day8 (9.30hrs). Refuge de Ciottulu di i Mori to Haut Asco. Big day today as we had the treks highlight; the Cirque de la Solitude. Early start as we 4 hours of walking to get to it, but it was clear and almost haze free of the previous evenings cloud and by the time we got to the Cirque it was an amazing blue day and pretty quite. Had lunch (and some truly awful cheese from the Bergerie below) on the rim before the decent into it. Nothing like as hard as we had been lead to believe and the climb out, although steep wasn?t that hard. Glad that the numbers were low and that the rocks were dry though. More luxury again this evening as we camped next to the hotel in Haut Asco where we made use of the restaurant.

Sunday Sep 7, 2008 #

Walk 2:30:00 [0] 27.0 km (5:33 / km) +1100m 4:37 / km

GR20 Day7 (9.30hrs). Refuge de Manganu to Refuge de Ciottulu di i Mori. A lot of km?s today but not much climb. Easy but long morning walk to Castellu di Verghio where we stocked up on supplies and had a proper (but rather small) cooked lunch. Saw clouds for the first time this morning and spent about 20 minutes in them before they departed, only to return again in the evening just as we were climbing up to the highest hut on trek (1991m). As it was late, cloudy and damp we opted for our only night in a refuge and it was a good choice although very noisy and busy compared to camping.

Saturday Sep 6, 2008 #

Walk 2:30:00 [0] 18.0 km (8:20 / km) +1540m 5:50 / km

GR20 Day6 (10.00hrs). Refuge de l'Onda to Refuge de Manganu. Started early and got to Refuge de Pietra Piana by 11.30 on another cracking morning. Thinking of staying here for the day as it was so beautiful but with time pressures and then the arrival of the Italians (how did they manage to get here???) we made the long push onto Refuge de Manganu ? people coming against us had said that it was taking nearer 5 hours rather than the 7 listed in the book. I loved this section as we followed a ridge high above lakes in the valley bottom and had it mostly to ourselves.

Friday Sep 5, 2008 #

Walk 1:30:00 [0] 13.0 km (6:55 / km) +1500m 4:23 / km

GR20 Day5 (6.30hrs). Vizzavona to Refuge de l'Onda. Took the Alpine route again today which meant 1500m straight up right from the start. Worth it to get to the top of Mte d?Oro (2389m) and have it all to ourselves. Toughest bit of the trek this with some proper scrambling and huge drops. L?Onda also a great campsite with all sorts of farm animals running around the pen designated for camping.

Thursday Sep 4, 2008 #

Walk 3:00:00 [0] 32.0 km (5:38 / km) +1445m 4:35 / km

GR20 Day4 (11.00hrs). Bocca de Verde to Vizzavona. After such an easy previous day we couldn?t take it easy today could we? Took the high level route to the lunch stop at Bergeries de Capannelle. Slightly miscalculated the time meaning that it was a 7 hour walk rather than 5 and also very underused and not marked (from the south at least). Beautiful route though and we were joined by several lost dogs for the morning. Faye was ready to call it a day a Bergeries de Capannelle but the noise from a mechanical digger and then the arrival of the Italians made the further 5 hours to Vizzavona (and the promise of luxury there) more appealing. Huge day again and we were all completely shagged by the time we got to the restaurant at the days end. Chips, Mmmmm. Half way in four days, easy this trekking stuff!

Wednesday Sep 3, 2008 #

Walk 1:45:00 [0] 16.0 km (6:34 / km) +830m 5:13 / km

GR20 Day3 (7.00hrs). Refuge d'Asinao to Bocca de Verde. Much easier day today with comparatively little climb. Followed the ridge all morning before a huge drop down to the col and a very dusty campsite. Another amazing day only slightly marred by the group (all old and on an organised walking tour) of religious song singing Italians who had been far too cheery the previous evening and preceded to keep us up until gone 9 in the evening with there vocal antics again this evening.

Tuesday Sep 2, 2008 #

Walk 3:00:00 [0] 25.0 km (7:12 / km) +2090m 5:05 / km

GR20 Day2 (11.00hrs). Village de Bevella to Refuge d'Usciolu. Epic long day. Early start (before sunrise, leaving at 6.25) and straight up onto the Alpine route, Stopped in Refuge d'Asinao for lunch (after 4.5 hours) where we were planning to stock up on bread and chesse so we could use the wild campsite that evening. The hut gardien was a knob and wouldn?t give us anything so we had either the choice of staying there all day or pushing on to the next hut which was a further 7 hours away; with no extra time we decided to do this but it was tough and dark by the time we arrived in d?Usciolu at gone 8.

Monday Sep 1, 2008 #

Walk 1:45:00 [3] 19.0 km (5:32 / km) +1670m 3:50 / km

GR20 Day1 (7.00hrs). Conca to Village de Bevella. Beautiful start and a long slow climb all day, semi-open pines and granite boulders and plenty of scrub. Long for a first day walk and shoulders hurting from the bag. Great to have a bet in a Gite at the end and even the luxury of a restaurant for a few extra calories!
