Run - Orienteering race 59:26 [4] *** 7.5 km (7:55 / km) +310m 6:34 / km
spiked:11/13c slept:7.0 weight:70kg (injured) shoes: VJ Falcons

Short Brown on Ilkley Moor. First time running here and a nice area it is too, though pretty steep. Very happy as I ran a longer course than I was planning on (I wanted an A3 map!) and managed to keep running at a good pace throughout – the first run that I have felt like I am actually making progress. Still got well beaten by an M18 though.

Saturday Feb 27, 2010 #

Note
slept:7.5 (injured)

Spent the afternoon watching the national XC (some decent runs from orienteers in there), was planning on running afterwards but was hungry and hurting from being on my feet all day.

Friday Feb 26, 2010 #

Note
slept:7.0 (injured) (rest day)

Tired from yesterdays event.

Run - Orienteering 48:30 [3] *** 4.8 km (10:06 / km) +150m 8:44 / km
spiked:8/12c slept:7.5 (injured) shoes: VJ Falcons

Night O on Blacka, however it wasn’t the dark that provided the navigational challenge, rather the mist. Bright torches were no help (unless you carried them in your hand, which made map reading very difficult) so it was a great compass session. Ran reasonably comfortably in the rough with the aid of a bit of gravity (it is sometimes kind) but slower back up. Didn’t find two of the controls after having a good look so carried on rather than getting cold – only managed the first half anyway so it wasn’t like I was missing anything. Great session though and it was nice to be out – back hurting now though.

Run - Trail warm up/down 6 [1] 1.0 km (6 / km) +10m 6 / km

Run - Road 35:00 [3]
slept:7.5 (injured) shoes: Asics 2140

Explored the chasm between Eccy road and Abbeydale rd; lots of hills and roads – why is gravity such a cruel mistress?

Birthday today, but nothing to celebrate – I think that I’m entitled to be a grump old man…

Physio exercises 15:00 [1]
slept:6.75 (injured)

Early morning trip to see the physio - she didn't seem to have much of an idea of what to do with me now that my shoulder is getting a little stronger.

Run - Trail 35:30 [2] 6.8 km (5:13 / km) +90m 4:54 / km
slept:7.5 (injured) shoes: Asics 2140

Slushy lunchtime run up through the Parks. Slow but happily so but hills provided their usual resistance. Have signed up to do KC’s drill sessions tonight but had completely forgotten about it – no time this evening anyway so will have to catch up next week.

Celebrating 6 months of immobility today – never thought that it’d last this long; guess that I’ve just been lucky never to have had anything go seriously wrong in the past.

Run - Orienteering 35:00 [2] 5.0 km (7:00 / km) +50m 6:40 / km
slept:7.0 weight:71.5kg (injured) shoes: VJ Falcons

Collecting yesterdays controls with my very helpful assistant fluceluce (both her and Iain did a lot more miles than I did yesterday – it’s good being in charge ;-) ). Cold and a bit damp but got through everything quite quickly and didn’t lose any units – the Russians did lose three SI cards though.

Run - Orienteering 30:00 [1] 3.3 km (9:05 / km) +30m 8:42 / km
slept:6.25 (injured)

Placing and collecting controls throughout the day for a corporate team building day near Oxford. Cracking morning but it got pretty cold as the day went on and by the time of the night exercise it was freezing. Consisted of a group of about 30 Russian investment bankers who we split in teams of 3-4 and turned out to be the biggest cheats that I’ve ever seen in orienteering (even more than army recruits!). One team even forded a waste deep river after being told not to - guess that it’s part of the risk taking mentality that makes them successful. Seemed to go pretty well though and everyone used more than their allotted time on every exercise. An unusual day but interesting as well.

Run - Road 36:50 [3] 7.8 km (4:43 / km) +130m 4:22 / km
slept:7.25 (injured) shoes: Asics 2140

Tried to really hard to run a little faster today but my legs just wouldn’t. Felt desperately slow and I struggled to maintain any respectable momentum on the climb, however the run back down was somewhat better but it was still hard work keeping on a decent pace despite the aid of gravity. Nice day though.

Run - Road 36:00 [2] 7.4 km (4:52 / km) +95m 4:34 / km
(injured) shoes: Asics 2140

First run in a week and it didn’t make it any easier. Lunchtime run up Porter Brook, felt smashing starting but was dead by the third little hill. I’m sure that my legs will get stronger but it will be some time yet.
8 PM

Run - Road 15:00 [1] 2.5 km (6:00 / km) +40m 5:33 / km
slept:6.5 (injured) shoes: Asics Gel GT 1120 07

Various bit of exercises and down and back to clubnight. OJ planned an interesting session using ski maps indoors.

Tuesday Feb 16, 2010 #

Note
slept:6.0 weight:71.5kg (injured)

Was planning on a little jaunt during the day but ran out of time as my life isn’t providing me with any spare time at the moment. The lay off is making me even fatter.

Monday Feb 15, 2010 #

Note
slept:5.5 (injured)

Tired, but done the important bits. Now for landscape Work.

Sunday Feb 14, 2010 #

Note
slept:7.0 (injured)

Planning and the like. Fiddly, took ages but getting there, should be mostly done by the morning.

Run - Orienteering 20:00 [1] 2.0 km (10:00 / km) +40m 9:05 / km

Drawing mostly done so allowed a bit of time off. Up to Burbage Mines to help Camel with the SYO talent squad training. A bit cold.

Friday Feb 12, 2010 #

Note
(injured)

Mapping finished early so got a good long rest in the car on the way home. Part one done; now have 5 days to draw, plan and organise…

Thursday Feb 11, 2010 #

Note
(injured)

Full day mapping, first since August. Back a bit knackered. Need rest. Good progress though.

Wednesday Feb 10, 2010 #

Note
(injured)

Driving and mapping (in the snow). Cold.

Tuesday Feb 9, 2010 #

4 PM

Run - Trail 1:09:30 [3] 11.3 km (6:09 / km) +120m 5:50 / km
slept:6.5 weight:70.3kg (injured) shoes: Asics 2140

Run from Redmires around Burbage and back along Stanage with gg and Danger. Was nice and easy for them but I was struggling to keep the pace steady, especially on the hills where my legs were still vociferously complaining about Sundays efforts. Great to be out on a lovely evening (still plenty of bits of snow around) and had a fun loop in the (un)forbidden forest with Danger at the end.
Skinny today so the recent weight gain obviously wasn't muscle ;-(

Physio exercises 10:00 [1]
slept:6.0 (injured) (rest day)

Was planning on circuits but was so beat up from the weekend I thought a rest day would be more prudent.
Physio visit in the morning, and just like the doctor last week, she thought that I am most likely to have some long term implications with my shoulder

Sunday Feb 7, 2010 #

10 AM

Run - Orienteering race 59:40 [3] 8.0 km (7:28 / km)
(injured) shoes: VJ Falcons 09

Tim Watkins long distance. Tired from yesterday but felt pretty good on the hill to the start and around the scatter controls (to split runners up in the mass start). But then we hit the second hill and I had nothing at all left in the legs. Was never planning on finishing so cut a loop out to get ahead of everyone so I could follow the race. Actually made it to the half way point (quite enough for me) before they caught me. So disappointing not to be able to race in this area; the woods were amazing, technical and tough but not too steep and the type of place that I would usually love. Next time.

Ankles have also turned to putty and aren’t happy on stony ground at the moment, so will need to add some strength work to them to my recovery plans. Orienteering is also very easy while running this slow.
12 PM

Run - Terrain 33:33 [1] 4.8 km (6:59 / km)
slept:7.0 weight:71kg (injured) shoes: VJ Falcons 09

Followed the race with a group of soft southerns who jacked it at half way (Nixon, GG and Camel) as they couldn’t cope with the pleasant terrain, exciting it was too with OJ, Nails and Oleg battling it out with the former claiming the victory despite stating yesterday that he had no intention of pushing hard today…

Run - Orienteering race 49:30 [4] 6.8 km (7:17 / km) +50m 7:01 / km
slept:7.5 (injured) shoes: Asics Trabuco 12 WR

Carlisle urban race. As expected; tried to run but wasn’t going anywhere in a hurry, quite a fun course though and even running slowly with plenty of time to look around and plan things there was enough to keep me occupied. Hardest and longest that I’ve run on roads so far but it wasn’t quite enough to prevent me from being beaten by Ash “has a perfect running style and is teachers pet” Ambrose; he beat me by a second. Grrrrr! Still a long way to get fixed but slowly getting there.

Friday Feb 5, 2010 #

Note
slept:7.25 weight:71.5kg (injured) (rest day)

Another day of rest. Feeling the circuits a little more today but mostly in my legs, so I guess that’s good.
Saw a private doctor yesterday who was doing a report for the insurance company about my claim. What a waste of time; he sat in front of me dictating from my medical notes into a voice recorder (for someone else to write up) and then gave me a very brief examination. Not sure what the point in it was at all other than to get me out of bed at 7.15.
Super fat this evening.

Thursday Feb 4, 2010 #

Note
slept:6.0 (injured) (rest day)

Rest day, and thankfully not suffering many after effects from yesterdays session either.

Circuits 1:00:00 [2]
weight:71kg (injured) shoes: Asics 2140

Club night lead by Kim who gave excellent instruction on how to control your core while doing circuits and technique on a few drills. Great session for me as it wasn’t very strenuous and I even managed to do just about all the exercises. Shoulder still very weak for press-ups and triceps-dips though. Still fat today - must be all the bread that I've been eating.

Tuesday Feb 2, 2010 #

7 PM

Run - Trail 41:00 [3]
weight:71kg (injured) shoes: Asics Trabuco 12 WR

Up through the Parks with Boyzone and his friend Mark from school (he he). Dead on my legs today and was struggling to keep up, also way over heated as I thought it was could out as it was snowing, but it wasn’t. Body weighed too much today, wonder why?
8 PM

Physio exercises 11:00 [1]
(injured)

Short session as in a rush.

Monday Feb 1, 2010 #

Note
slept:5.0 (injured) (rest day)

Tired today, both from an accumulation of an abundance of exercise and a lack of good sleep.

Congratulations to Boyzone and Fionne for a whopping new baby girl, Orla, born yesterday morning.
