Note

Reflecting on takeaways from this weekend. I had a lot of fun orienteering, hanging out with the team and meeting new people.

Positive things I learned from this (strengths):
~Bearings are easier in white forest than medium green, and I can be more confident in my compass work
~I can plan a feasible route and stick to it
~I can complete long races >5km
~I can complete long routes without getting terribly lost
~I can relocate in complicated areas
~I can find controls in pits/depressions with awkward attackpoints
~I can bounce back after a bad control
~I can complete hard, long, hilly races even when I am at my worst, physically

Areas of improvement:
~Simplifying complex control circles, especially in sprints
~Better flow for sprints
~Learn when to slow down and don't outrun navigation
~When to go over vs. around
~Check for parallel error opportunities
~Use backstops instead of stopping early
~Get faster with precise bearings
~Check control codes

Thank you to everyone who set up these races. I had so much fun on all of them (even the long, though there were excessive amounts of hills). Everything seemed to run smoothly, even though there was a power outage, and this was probably my favorite NRE that I have been to. Also, the awards were very efficient which was great.

Orienteering 1:20:51 [4] 3.8 mi (21:16 / mi) +900ft 17:23 / mi

Physically, this race was a dumpster fire. I was really sick and was debating on even racing especially because I barely slept the night before. I definitely learned a lot on this race. I enjoyed the technical part of this much more than I usually do. It was the perfect level of difficulty-if you're paying attention and being methodical and careful, you'll find the control, if not, you're screwed.

3-It was super awkward moving around the lake in this area. I probably should have gone up to the trail. ~30 seconds

4-I was not looking at my map. I climbed up from the lake to the trail when I realized that I was still down along the lake. In the process of this, I dropped my map twice and once I was up on the trail, I immediately cut into the depression/cliff area without knowing an exact location. I figured out where I was relatively quickly but I wasn't 100% confident in this and after trying to take bearings to the pit twice, I took a bearing towards the lake and ended up on the trail intersection with the boulder. From there, I ran up on top of the line of cliffs and easily found the control. ~6 minutes

5-Good bearing with pace count! I did not expect this bearing to work, but I pace counted and ended up where I could see the control!

6-So awkward getting out of 5. I could not find the trail. It was good once I found the trail and I executed another good bearing! ~40 seconds

7-good bearing!

8-the map seemed to not perfectly match the terrain and the vegetation boundaries did not look like what I expected so I ended up too far up the reentrant and wandered around there for a while before finally going down the reentrant and finding the control on a cliff, not a man made object. ~10 minutes

10-The hill felt so steep and I could not force myself to even speedwalk up it.

11-I took a bearing but got pushed around a bit in the green. I found the ditch and followed it, but when it ended, I couldn't find the depression, but I saw someone else punch the control after wandering around for a bit. ~1 minute

13-I can usually easily see the exact center of a control circle, so I don't use my control code much in forest races. For some reason, I thought the control was on the rocky ground, which I found, when in reality it was in the ditch. I assumed that the rocky ground was actually a cliff and that I needed to go southwest. This ended up leading me to another ditch which had a control that was not mine. ~3 minutes

15-I was worried about finding these pits, but I executed this one perfectly!

16-Yay! good compass bearing!

Looking at splits, I did better than I thought I did on my good legs, so that's reassuring. I'm really happy with my compass bearings and relocation in this race. Also, Paige caught up to me after 13 and she totally pushed me to go faster.

Running 19:05 [1] 1.58 mi (12:05 / mi) +180ft 10:54 / mi

Warm up

Orienteering 2:01:14 [4] 6.14 mi (19:45 / mi) +1500ft 16:02 / mi

I felt a bit sick during this race and I had trouble sleeping the night before, so my main goal was to not get super lost. I had quite a bit of fun, even though I felt pretty bad physically.

1-I hesitated a bit and didn't really have a plan but it worked out fine. ~30 seconds

2-Lost some time wandering around because the control circle covered some small cliffs that distracted me and made me wonder if I was in the right place. ~2 minutes

4-Lost a ton of time on a stupid parallel error. I ran into the rocky ground at the south end of the ditch that I was gonna use as an attackpoint, but I thought it was the larger patch of rocky ground further west of the control. Basically I thought I was one reentrant over, so I wandered around east of my control for a while. ~17 minutes

5-Executed a compass bearing perfectly and efficiently! I don't feel super secure with my bearings and compass work so this was a win. Then, I got pulled off by some rocky features that I didn't notice on my map. ~1 minute

6-Got a bit confused with trails. ~ 4 minutes

8-Felt super slow coming back up the hill. Also, accidentally went to the wrong reentrant and overshot the depression a bit. ~4 minutes

9-I was super exhausted by this point and got a bit distracted by an ambulance on the road. I also was a bit south of my control but ended up looking behind me and seeing it. ~3 minutes

11-I exited 10 weirdly and then I had to kind of search around for the control ~1 minute

Finish-Why did they make us sprint up a hill after a hilly long?

Overall lost time:32:30

Reflecting on this race, I'm a little disappointed, but I'm trying to pick out the positives. I was able to finish this race without getting horribly lost and I had fun while I was out there even though I was going slow and I made mistakes. I'm pretty proud of this because before this, my longest race was 4.8km and I was worried about finishing this race.

warm up

Stretching and strength 5:00 [1]

drills

Orienteering 17:44 [5] 2.07 mi (8:34 / mi) +145ft 8:02 / mi

I felt pretty strong on this but I made a few careless errors. It was so fun to finally race a sprint NRE! The following are positive and negative highlights from most of the controls

1-I hesitated a bit on where the control would be in that mess of walls but I decided to go for it and hope for the best, which worked out. ~10 seconds

3-I'm not sure which route choice was best. I didn't really consider other routes than the one I took, but I definitely had some unnecessary climb.

4-The gray area was really more of a plastic thing that I didn't register as an underpass. ~50 seconds

6-hesitated a bit because the leg was so simple.

7-hesitated a bit with the stairs and walls. ~10 seconds

8-I was unable to simplify the map within the control circle and read the map precisely so I wander around that area for a bit. ~40 seconds

10-I didn't see the stairs connecting the two parking lots, so I went around the east edge while attacking. ~10 seconds

11-Almost got tricked by the stairs east of the control but I realized they didn't connect and I didn't lose any time!

15-Was able to easily gauge which side of the wall the control was on without checking my control code.

Overall lost time: 2 minutes
I had so much fun on this race and I'm super happy with how I was able to maintain speed and mostly execute my navigation well.
