Orienteering race 18:40 [3] ** 2.2 km (8:29 / km)
spiked:12/14c shoes: Adidas

OCIN FAST-O Miami University western area sprint course #2, longest one offered. First sprint course during recovery. Use of the term "sprint" is liberal when applied to my current running but overall happy with how I did. Navigation pretty good except for one area on the way to 10 where I got a bit messed up interpreting the multiple streams and bridges. Always nice courses out there at Miami U, sadly my last OCIN event before the move, will miss it, have had many many good experiences at OCIN events through the years--can't thank OCIN folks like Mike, Matthew, Dave, et al enough as it's made my many days away from home in the ohio area so much more enjoyable. Going to have to come up with a training plan to increase my speed now that I've tested the distance and speed waters and seems the speed is a bigger recovery project for me than the endurance and navigation, especially the sprinting.

Orienteering 1:35:51 [3] *** 8.9 km (10:46 / km) +95m 10:13 / km
spiked:9/15c shoes: Vasque Velocity

Igor's Winnewana / Waterloo State Rec Area streamer course. Vegetation already pretty thick. Nice day for it, but I was sloppy navigationally in a few places. Many thanks to Igor for a great streamer course and will head back for the mountain bike trail unless someone beats me to it.

1- spike
2- spike
3- doubted myself, saw bigger hill north of me so went to that, but then circled back to where I was and had I stayed my course originally I would have gone right to it.
4- saw that mountain bike trail Igor talked about, checked it out for a bit, but then decided to go back to it next weekend unless someone beats me to it.
5- slow spike, crossed the swamp, it was pretty dry until the very east end but easy hop over the water to stay dry
6- slow going and zig zagging, was unsure of myself in this area but went to it without going past it
7- spike- wow, crazy controlled fall down the dirt cliff
8- spike
9- pretty good, used that trail going south out of the open field area to cross swamp, hunter was set up in a hunting outlook tent on the west side of the field by that trail looking east, so I went barreling through his area, hope I didn't ruin anything for him today
10- spike- found a bit of a trail north of 9 just orth of the trench running NW up to the open field but it stopped before getting to the open field
11- wonky- thought I was too far south, but wasn't, I was right where I should have been coming into the control area, but again doubted myself and off I went north only to turn back to where I was originally at
12- spike
13- whoa-- HUGE snapping turtle was waiting for me right on that trail crossing the marsh just south of 12 right where the stream was and there were some small logs / sticks laid down to cross on foot...I saw a big rock looking thing I started planning on stepping on to cross the stream, but then it moved and I saw a pointy head poke out of it!! Humongous snapping turtle! Didn't want to mess with that so I crossed further west over some roots. Then after crossing the road I went SW through the woods trying to go straight towards 13 but it seemed mostly light green the whole way so made for a slow slog... then I made parallel error thinking I was running along the north side of the pond/marsh east of 13 but was actually at that marshy area north of it, which explains why I was perplexed why there wasn't a trail to run into...and the control area for 13 was ouch - pickers.
14- spike. cut through the woods straight to the trailhead at the road for the trail that goes right up to 14, pretty decently runnable woods there compared to on the way to 13.
15- spike, but a bit slow coming out of 14 and checking my features at those open areas west and south of the big pond.

Longest orienteering outing since the surgery, continuing to push the distance to see how it goes.
