1st daytime o-race since the surgery 1.2 yrs ago, trial run to see how my hip handled it. The real test is how it feels the following day but so far so good today. Have to say it felt very liberating running through the woods orienteering again after so long. I'm not sure how the hip handled it just yet, but as for the rest of me it was very healing. And also have to say I was fairly happy w/ how I did today. I opted for a shorter course but still technical so as not to over-do it on the hip, so Brown seemed like a perfect option for me.
Fun course with a nice mix of long legs and short ones. Absolutely loved controls 6 through 9. Blew past #4 because I intended to deliberately aim off to the the right but didn't actually do it because of bad bearing discipline, so I got to the stream, turned left as planned, never saw the control, and then found myself at the footbridge on the trail unexpectedly... so then I backtracked and found it. oy! I also wasn't so hot on #5. Got to the intersection of streams as planned. But plan was to go from there to the southwest over to the clearing w/ the straight streambeds running E-W. What I actually did was went to the wrong clearing just north of those streambeds and fought through all that green and I got close to #5, just northeast of it in that big opening. The massive powerlines helped me home in when I was coming out of the fight.
For having only orienteered this time and once in December since the surgery, I can only be happy w/ how I did. Most of the course I was runnning confidently and doing many of the right things. Even physically I was feeling better than expected despite not being anywhere near my previous physique.
Nice to see some familiar faces too and very impressed w/ all the bells and whistles at the QOC event - from touchpad self-registration to real-time results, I felt like I was at an A-meet! Awesome job QOC, in all areas. Sunny skies and cool temp's helped make it even better. Hopefully I wake up tomorrow not in pain and I can start building myself back up to some longer distance capabilities again. My thanks to QOC for a great event and to everyone who has encouraged me to keep trying to get back into this. I will continue trying!
