Orienteering 2:00:00 [2] *** 7.0 km (17:09 / km)
shoes: Vasque Velocity

Putting out controls, and taking them down.

I kinda liked the online pre-registration thing for the Scramble at the Arb, I guess now I'm spoiled. But being a scatter-brain I guess I like having something that makes everything organized for me.

Speaking of scatter-brained, totally forgot to print the clue sheets. I left the door with that feeling like I was forgetting something despite re-checking "everything" three times... being a pilot I should have known, "ALWAYS USE THE CHECKLIST!!"

So fun to introduce a new map to everyone, so thankful for all the help from Igor & everyone else, so cool to see a good showing of orienteers from all over including CAOC, OI, and MVOC. Nice that the rain stopped after I got all the controls out, and didn't start again until almost everyone was done (sorry Barb, I tried to stop the rain!)

Cool to run into Jan again after meeting him at an O-Utah meet in July! Also great to see the OI guys out here enjoying some Michigan terrain... which made me really wish I would have had enough time here at U of M to start a student appendage to SMOC... if only there was enough time, argh!!

Speaking of time, meet directing two days, on two new maps, dealing with 3 bureaucracies to get it all done, was a heck of a lot of work, but the results were totally awesome and well worth it all.

I slept for 13 hrs Saturday night and unwittingly slept through church the next morning. Hoping God is also an orienteer...looking at these forests He created I think He is! :)

Orienteering 1:00:00 [1] * 4.0 km (15:00 / km)
shoes: Vasque Velocity

Putting out controls.

Just being here orienteering is awesome. Did a lot of reflection from Mary Jo's comments she posted earlier regarding University of Michigan orienteering and how it all started right here in 1980. Seemed like everyone really enjoyed the course and good to see the Sprint-O experience was new for a few of them. The visibility got a ton better just in the past week. ROTC turnout was an epic FAIL despite my repeated efforts to reach out. But CAP cadets are coming to Maybury next week and I'll be able to do some instruction for them, so looking forward to that.

Best moment of the night was seeing Alex screaming into the finish...I'm not sure I've ever seen that fast a finish before!!

Orienteering 1:06:00 [2] ***
shoes: Vasque Velocity

Final field checks at the Arb, and briefed Army ROTC cadets at the Arb before their lanes. Lots of rain, but looks like it will relent a little tomorrow and Saturday. People coming from all over for both the Friday and Saturday races, should be a good mix of orienteers!

Note

Ugh!!!! For some reason there are GPS tracks showing up in the Arb OCD file every time I bring it into PurplePen, yet I can't see them anywhere in Open Orienteering Mapper. Might have to do all the controls manually in O-Mapper...

Note

Picked up the medals for the "Scramble at the Arb" race, and trophy and medals for the ROTC challenge weekend as well, they look great for "scrambling" last minute for award stuff. Also talked w/ Army and Air Force ROTC today, so we should have some good participation there. Will be briefing the cadets on Thursday at Army. Sadly Navy is not playing any more. Now time to get cracking on wrapping up the Arb map and getting maps ready to print.
