Orienteering race 1:36:00 [3] *** 10.79 km (8:54 / km) +127m 8:24 / km
spiked:9/16c (injured) shoes: La Sportiva Wildcat

What a nice day! The Greens ordered some superb weather for this one! Red course at Bishop Lake. Overall not too shabby, really enjoyed it. Backed off the speed a bit to finesse the injury but probably should have been a little more disciplined with that, but the strain and pain was significantly less later in the night and the next day than it was after last week's Line-O and the WMOC races, so I think the resting and stretching is paying off. Hopefully can get to a fuller faster running speed in time for Nov.

As far as course comments, overall a very enjoyable Red course with a few good challenges that got me and some moderate mistakes, but no huge mistakes. Here goes:

1- spike
2- Cooper said the field was no longer OB so I used it and then the trail to trail/road intersection, mostly because I remembered the green in this area is atrocious so I didn't feel like starting off in a bunch of fight... But missed the small trail coming off the road, so ran past and had to go back to it, lost time there, but after I found the trail I went right to it.
3- had a great plan, bad execution. Followed the wrong low area and wound up at the foot trail which threw me for a bit.., but I recognized it quickly and made my way right to the control after relocating, so significant time lost but not terrible.
4- Took trail up and then attacked from the low area, hesitated a bit and shouldn't have because I was pretty much right on. Crossed paths with Rick coming off of 4.
5- Spike mostly...had a trail snafoo for a bit not knowing how far along the trail I was, but went right to it after that.
6- Spiked. Cut along the south sides of the ponds and then wrapped around the east side of the hill and the wide reentrant led me right to it.
7- spike- took the road, used corner as AP
8- spike- although I was not as ambitious as Jens and did not cross the swamp. I ran around the north side of it to catch the trail.
9- Should have spike this one. Trails and then took shortcut from trail junction to the low area that led to 9 but once again got on a catching trail without knowing exactly where I was on the trail and thus wasted some more time trying to make sure I was actually at my intended AP. once I confirmed I got it.
10- Spike- ran trails, west side of open field, road, then trails again
11- grrr, frustrating one, followed the edge of the water bodies but when I got close to 11 turns out I was too far south following the contouring so did some unnecessary foraging on this one, plenty of time lost here.
12- Good route choices, but I wound up one trail south of where I thought I was going to end up and then ran right by the control afterwards, kept thinking I would see it from the trail until DUH it's green! So got it after that.
13- Trail to pond corner then cut over to other trail that took me right to it, spike.
14- Jusr ran north side of two ponds, the south side and used clearing ad AP, went right to it, spike.
15- Spike, intersection as AP
F- all done.

Got greener and greener as you got closer to finish! After typing this all out I now realize a trend which is intend to use trails as catching features but not paying enough attention to make sure I will know exactly where on that trail I will be...so I need to do better job of looking for those details and planning for it, or deliberately aim off better perhaps.

Fun seeing the little guy run to the finish.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Been giving the injury some more rest time. Going to start working quad and abdomen strength more as a rehabilitative / preventative measure. Want to make sure I can run full speed again by Nov A-meet time. Will see what happens at the SMOC meet Sat, probably going to have to take it easy and not push too hard.

U of M has us on their schedule for doing the Nov Sprint course at the Arboretum (Arb). Excited because I shied away from even asking about the Arb initially because I thought they'd say no for sure, but apparently ROTC already has access to the Arb for land nav purposes so when the North Campus door closed, the Arb door was opened. Unfortunately the coolest terrain is off limits and the many patches of restricted areas will make the course setting tricky, but I still have enough to work with to design some challenging and scenic navigation races that will be a great segway into the next day's first ever Park Lyndon orienteering event.
