Orienteering race 1:51:00 [4] *** 10.51 km (10:34 / km) +307m 9:13 / km
spiked:7/11c shoes: Vasque Velocity

First time orienteering in the great state of Utah. Very basic map missing a lot of detail, but good enough to go out and have fun. Great workout and nice weather for this, rain let up right when I arrived, good timing!

1- spike
2- trouble tripping on my way to 2 because of invisible potholes under the brush due to water pockets. Used the sign as an AP but stopped too short, went to trail junction as another AP and got it. Started having trouble with map details here.
3- spike
4- Went straight through the forest off of 3, but never saw my first catching feature which was supposed to be a stream (mapped as thick blue line on the map), then started having trouble with the terrain details, so moved over to the east to a trail. At this point I should have realized that what was mapped as a stream was actually a dry stream bed since the trail crossed right over it, but I was just not paying attention to that and crossed without noticing onto my new readjusted AP coming off a trail bend. Again, never saw water, so started meandering...actually tried reattacking several times and getting more and more frustrated, several times over, then finally went out to the trail bridge over the stream and realized the stream was dry, not water, and there was my ah-ha moment. Followed the stream bed up to the control and that led me right to it, easy. That was probably about 1 hour total, not one of my finer orienteering moments, but one of my better workouts recently. :)
5- spike
6- spike
7- should have been a spike but never saw the trail mapped that led from the west right to it, so I ended up adding a bit of extra distance before cutting over to the north-south trail, then easy.
8- spike
9- spike
10- spike
F- spike. Should have been done in an hour, not 2, haha.

Very nice time and stoked that I finally timed being out in Utah at the same time as an o meet. Great time out there and wife and son had a good time to, thanks to O-Utah, can't wait to do another one out there, just can't beat the scenery!
