Orienteering 1:06:00 [2] ***
shoes: Vasque Velocity

Final field checks at the Arb, and briefed Army ROTC cadets at the Arb before their lanes. Lots of rain, but looks like it will relent a little tomorrow and Saturday. People coming from all over for both the Friday and Saturday races, should be a good mix of orienteers!

Note

Ugh!!!! For some reason there are GPS tracks showing up in the Arb OCD file every time I bring it into PurplePen, yet I can't see them anywhere in Open Orienteering Mapper. Might have to do all the controls manually in O-Mapper...

Note

Picked up the medals for the "Scramble at the Arb" race, and trophy and medals for the ROTC challenge weekend as well, they look great for "scrambling" last minute for award stuff. Also talked w/ Army and Air Force ROTC today, so we should have some good participation there. Will be briefing the cadets on Thursday at Army. Sadly Navy is not playing any more. Now time to get cracking on wrapping up the Arb map and getting maps ready to print.

Streamering Park Lyndon courses. All control locations streamered! Pretty close to having this one all set now, just a matter of picking up eqp't, finishing the control cards, slight adjustments to the courses, printing and more publicizing. The combo of using Open Orienteering Mapper and Purple Pen seems to work great so far, although its been taking me a long time to figure out the snags but now that most of that is solved it is a lot faster to use. Still only 7 people registered, still no ROTC yet...

Field checking. Ran Park Lyndon trails on west side. Got 'em all now. Tomorrow is streamering. Race day is just around the corner!

Field checking and course vetting at the Arb. Only one or two control locations will be tricky or need adjustment, so pretty much good to go on the courses. Made several notes for map updates. Lots of people out there on a nice fall Saturday afternoon.

Field checking at Park Lyndon and Pickney State Rec Area. Found some more trails. Also ran into more green stuff that requires another shift in the course design. Now that that's done the courses are finalized pending results from course vetting. Next time I will streamer the CP locations for vetting.

Also, received final approval from U of M for the Scramble at the Arb sprint-O! Going to release the registration and facebook event page sites Saturday.

Still need to wrap up some more field checking at the Arb, maybe Saturday while its still nice out.

Field checking at Park Lyndon / Pickney State Rec Area. Ran into some green areas and one of the trails disappeared. Checked out some more possible control locations. One thing is for sure, Park Lyndon will not disappoint.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [1] *** 5.0 km (12:00 / km) +100m 10:55 / km
shoes: Vasque Velocity

First field checking session at the Arb. Very pleased with the venue as it will offer a good test of both speed and technical ability...but being a sprint it will definitely be a runner's course. There will be some trail sections, some lawn running, some hill climbing, prairie running, and hilly forest running, so a good mix... plus some good route choice decision points. We could totally get away with doing a simple sprint course in the future only in one part of the Arb that doesn't have restrictions, so I was pleasantly surprised.

Administratively I figured out how to set up the online registration system and am already started on that. Also talked w/ the Arb's Facil Dir and a lot of our worries were eased. All required paperwork including course maps are submitted. Also Pickney State Rec Area has everything they need for the Park Lyndon event as well, heading out to field check that area this weekend. Seems to all be coming together, looking forward!

Note

Finished initial course designs for the "Scramble at the Arb" sprint event. Beginner course will be ~1.5 km, and the advanced course will be ~3.2 km as the birds fly. Field checking in the morning.
