Radio Orienteering race 1:20:23 [4] ****
spiked:2/4c shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 CL

US ARDF Champs 2m (144 MHz) Classic at Umstead. My 1st gold medal in radio-O! Barely. Ken was chasing, passed by him once which scared me, finished just one cycle ahead! Every race for me this week for the top spot has been very close. Found 4 quickly out of start chute and exclusion zone. Was very hesitant and sluggish to leave north side of map due to multiple path ambiguities on a couple other TXs. #3 was almost totally silent from the north but it barely broke my squelch in one direction so went with that getting 5 on the way. 3 was in a low bowl on far SE side of map which explains the weak signals. A little sloppy orienteering back to where I thought 2 was at but it got the job done. Looking back this was a very challenging course as far as reflections, a weak signal, and even orienteering and physicality, so pretty happy w/ how I did despite a couple nav mistakes and difficulty interpreting the signals on the north side.

Radio Orienteering race 37:51 [3] ***
spiked:4/8c shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 CL

US ARDF Champs Sprint. I did a lot better than the practice day. The tweaks I made to my strategy helped. Very fun course and venue. Nice spectator area for gravy. Made one major mistake going down wrong trail leading to lots of unnecessary running which probably cost me the gold. Once again Imre just barely ahead of me!

Radio Orienteering race 1:05:42 [4] *** 6.5 km (10:06 / km)
spiked:9/12c shoes: X-Talon 212

US ARDF Champs Fox-O at Eno River. Imre beat me by only 30sec, silver finish, and 2nd or 3rd fastest time across all classes so pretty good run. Smooth most the way but part of that 30 sec was hesitating / stopping counting controls to make sure I was going to all the controls (see: my 2018 World ARDF Champ's Fox-O disaster / accidental skip of a control), and a lot of the rest was going down a hill I should have stayed high on that I had to go back up. Had some hesitations along the way multiple other times. Lots of contouring. Nice to see a real Fox-O that required good orienteering skill as too many become too easy yellow/orange, so this was a great course.

Went out with Gavin and Elise in Gavin's Fox-O after finishing my race. Gavin did great and found 2 TXs all by himself. Becca ran her first Fox-O today and did pretty well Elise fell asleep riding on my shoulders. Very hot aftwrwards. What this all means is I'm exhausted!!

Radio Orienteering 39:45 [4]
spiked:5/10c shoes: Icebug

Sprint training. As usual my Sprint ARDF performance was nothing less than a disaster, lol. But very fun and perfect venue for a radio Sprint. Nice challenge with the maze-effect and limited railroad crossings.

Radio Orienteering 1:25:00 [4] ***
spiked:2/5c shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 CL

Training Day 2 - 3.5 MHz Classic. More optimal route than yesterday but somehow took about same amount of time. Probably my inefficient round about way to #4 in the beginning and too much backtracking on multiple tx's. Figured out how to make better use of the distance estimation on the LCD so it was a good training session.

Radio Orienteering 1:20:00 [4] ***
spiked:3/5c shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 CL

US Champs Training Day 1 - 144 MHz Classic training. Nice runnable woods. My route was very non-optimal. Sequence: 4-3-5-1-2-F. Signals a little weak at the start except 4 which is why I started with 4. Was unsure what side of river 3 was on so hesitated and burnt a couple cycles. Staying in contact w/ map helped make up for the non-optimal route. Fun start to the week!

Becca, Gavin and Elise went out on 3.5 MHz practice.
