Note
A day at Vassar. This event was called 'Mind the Gap'.
E and I have attended similar events in the past where various professors made up a one time class and we could pick which classes we were interested in attending. These were open to the general public, took place during a student break and included a catered lunch. No cost.
'Mind the Gap' was different in several ways. It was open only to Vassar graduates (and a guest if desired - that's me). Also a couple of people were assigned to attend various ongoing classes. This worked out much better than I expected.
The day started with coffee and sweets when we picked up our schedules.
SOCI 270: Drugs, Culture and Society. Today's class dealt with the use of Prozac and similar drugs to treat certain conditions such as depression and OCD. The professor went through some introductory material and then gave some case histories on the use of Prozac where the students were encouraged to give comments.
HIST 225: Renaissance Italy and The Mediterranean. This class was mostly class discussion and prior reading and dealt with the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks. Not quite as interesting as Prozac, but I left knowing a lot more about the fall than before the class.
AMCL 105: Native American History. The class started with two student presentations related to N.A. Both were contemporary. The class was then divided into groups of four and each group had to select a quote from the reading and expand on the idea.
Based on these three classes, it seems that there is an emphasis on student discussion and with that the professors always provided positive feedback.
Lunch was provided in the ACDC (All Campus Dining Center) with the students (at least those who chose to eat there). The place had a wide offering and it about five minutes of wandering around to find out what was available. Much nicer than my college experience.
After the classes there was a reception with some students and faculty. And more food.
