HVO/WCOC Winter series
Dater Mountain, Harriman State Park
Red, 6.0km, 1:10,000
Cloudy, calm and mild. A little sun would have been nice, but a good day to be out.
Nice open woods. Some blueberry, but nothing like it is a little farther north. The biggest navigational problem for me was downed trees. It looks like this area has seen some big winds.
OK for the first two controls, but went way right going to #3. Fortunately there was a trail to catch me.
OK again through #11, though the climb from #6 to #8 was exhausting.
Going to #12 I was looking for a boulder just north of the trail, something bigger than a half meter. A bigger problem was I thought the little squiggle in the contour at the control was a dot knoll. No knolls on that hillside. Janet Tryson led me to the control.
Finally, the reasonable route from #16 to the finish was the trail, but I was curious as to what the oval area delineated by the blue (green?) dots was all about. I still don't know, but I found some distinct, but unmapped, stone walls. Not much fun getting back to the trail.
