HVO/WCOC Winter Series
Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Green, 5.6km

As I was nearing the park, I realized that I forgot to take the map. Now what?! After a few minutes of cursing, I thought that I might be able to down load the map to my phone and use that. Cell reception at WPR is not the greatest, but I did manage to get the map. At a scale I could read, I couldn't see much of the course at once (or even some legs), but it would have to do. I started holding the phone in my hand, but that seemed kind of risky (for the phone), so it went into a pocket. So looking at the map consisted of taking the phone out of the pocket. taking off a glove (no "swipe" with it on), waking it up and swiping to see the map. To make this practical, I tried to memorize as much of a route as I could. This meant using trails and stone walls as much as possible.

#3 Took a wrong turn, but recovered OK.
#6 Left the obvious trail as there were hikers ahead of me, and relocation at the N/S trail looked reasonable. When I got to #6 I couldn't find the flag. Finally spotted it on the ground with some leaves scattered over it.
#9 Stopped at a flag on a stone wall ( I wasn't checking codes to avoid messing around with the display). When I checked the route to #10 I saw I was still short of the real #9.
#11 This flag was down and under water in the stream.

Shortly after starting, I came upon an unexpected sight: a 'groomed' ski trail. This is the first one I've seen here in over 30 years of skiing. The trail was a little rutted and slick, so I stayed in the open snow.

HVO/WCOC Winter series #2
Blue Mountain Reservation
Green-2 course. 5.0km. (1:10 000)

A mediocre effort on a nice day. I seemed to have some trouble reading the map as there are some more interesting routes then the ones I attempted. Also had trouble staying on course, but the MB trails kept me from going too far astray.
Saw Janet T. and another O'er in the woods. Glen T. was also out there somewhere doing two courses and maybe Geof as well.

HVO/WCOC Winter series #2
Blue Mountain Reservation
Green-1 course. 4.9km. (1:10 000)

Some sun, low 50s and a chilling wind.
Reading this map at 1:10000 is a bit of a challenge. Reading the detail required me to stand still. Even with that, this was a rather successful effort: no big blunders. Route choice to #4 is a little suspect, but looking at the hill on the straight line I decided to loop around.
