Note

I think this was my best 50-miler, ever, better than the flat Chicago one. I may consider sending in an entry to the Western States.

The recovery went very well. I was walking problem-free today.

Note

The shape I'm in would probably justify a trip to 7WRC, but looking at it realistically, it'd most likely be another 7th place. Which, frankly, I'm not so interested in. Top 3 or bust... and to be in that kind of shape, I should be able to run the Firetrails in low 8's. Which does not at all seem impossible. In the future.

Note

I couldn't sleep, so took off early—as in, 2 am—for the Dick Collins Firetrails 50-miler on the all-nighter 800 bus. Changed to the #801 in downtown Oakland, where a gunbattle was going on. It was peaceful in San Leandro, though. I walked the 3.5 km to the start at Lake Chabot marina, stopping at a 24-hr Denny's on the way for breakfast. I got to the park more than an hour early, and slept.

The run went extremely well. I ran strongly negative splits. The first three or so hours, I jogged in a group, talking a lot to Jamie, a first-time 50-miler. Then, Rick from the tri club caught up. About 3 hours 45 into the run, I got stung by about 5 bees. Not a problem. Rick and I ran together almost to the turnaround, where I was 55th or so. From there on, I cranked up the pace and finished 29th.

My original plan was to break 10 hours, but at Skyline Gate, I thought 9 was possible. The per-mile pace dropped for the next few aid stations because of the climb, but at the turnaround, I built up a schedule, mostly 9-min miles, and had no problem following it. I was really surprised at how well I felt, and how easy running was even into the very last hour, keeping up those 9-min miles. No cramps, no negative feelings of any kind. I had no problem with hydration, electrolytes, or feeding. Did get a tad dehydrated at one point, and slighly hyponatriated on the return to Bort Meadow, but recognized both issues and rectified them with authority.

I got the climb from the Polar and corrected it for noise. The race info estimate seemed low, and they changed the course compared to what the climb was calculated for. Total time for the 15 aid stations: 13:22. For the first 10 aid stations, I carried no bottle, so the drinking took some time. At the return visit to Skyline, someone handed me a bottle which sped up the transitions, but probly cost me a bit in speed.
