So nice to be back in the Bow Valley.
Middle and then 5 x 500m Otervals w/ walking recovery to the next start.
My goal for the Otervals was to not read the map and just try to stay as straight as possible on a bearing.
1 - Bit of a rocky start with all the deadfall but didn't get too lost
2 - Much better
3 - Didn't see the depression at all
4 - Maybe should have gone through the trees
5 - Formline wasn't super noticeable and was kinda hidden in deadfall
6 - good
7 - Really solid bearing despite the limited vis and all the trees I had to dodge
8 - Good but a lot of deadfall up on the hill
9 - Good, flags woulda helped
10 - More deadfall for the first half, then the spur was a little longer than I expected and the other spur came out of the hill more than on the map
11 - Pretty thick so just said 'close enough' and went on
12 - got a bit pushed around by deadfall at the start but the rest was well executed
13 - bad exit direction but fixed it quickly and then just double checking I was in the right spot at the end
14 - Reading veg in the open areas is always a little tricky here but went well enough
15 - Guess I went to far right when going down the hill
16 - Bad route, should have gone all the way up the hill and then down into the control rather than sidehill
17 - More carpets of deadfall
18 - Bit far left on the bearing and then got caught up in the parrel features
Otevals - Was off by almost 50m which is pretty damn good for this terrain given the dense forests and deadfall
Overall: really happy with my bearings for the most part, just need to work on simplifying the really technical stuff a bit. On the physical side, my legs felt good but my lungs were working a little harder than usual since I'm probably still acclimatising.
