Pfh with Felix, who enlightened me to the gåbakke (predesignated walking hill). Nice to go on a few new paths though, like direct up the fence to Allermuir. Also did the scree which was a bit bare and accounted for the max HR. A few small grumbles from the ITB but probably better than Friday. Legs not used to the big steep stuff though, calves on the way up and quads on the way down!

hrv: 9.3 (yellow), 9.0 (yellow), 8.4 and HR 47, 49, 49. Much better numbers today, best since the JK, and the yellows are just because it's "outside normal range". However, signal quality was only 'good' rather than 'optimal' on the first two.

7hrs mapping in Falkirk, lovely day for it. Headache actually fairly strong though, so won't run today.

Bit of a logistical mixup

Bog with Tim, Alex, Kai and Colm, lovely to be back on the morning miles. Outside of L knee worsened towards the end, was a little niggly towards the end of the cycle and ever since. Classic ITB thing, will hammer some clamshells etc.

hrv:8.3, 8.0, 7.5 (yellow) and HR 56, 55, 57. Not as bad as you might expect after the races. Also no HR data the last few days as we've been camping and it's not worked (too cold or humid for the sensor probably)

101.25k, +1130m, 23.4kph

Ferry from NI to Cairnryan this morning, then the plan was for Dad to drop me at Lockerbie (leaving me 120k) before heading south on the motorway. Raining and foggy though all the way through Galloway so Dad took pity on me and went another 30k north to somewhere above Eskdalemuir. Still raining, but not heavily, and with a lovely tailwind and a handlebar bag full of snacks I set off in good spirits. Two panniers but no camping stuff, the heaviest thing being the laptop.

A short, gradual climb before the first of a few absolutely glorious gradual descents, brakes very rarely needed, surface pretty decent and very quiet - went half an hour before passing a car. Still raining but having a great time. Then came two gradual climbs, 3.2k at 4%, another lovely descent, then 4.5k at 3%, just settling into a rhythm for 15mins on both, seated and not needing bottom gear. Consumed a Belvita and a brownie. At some point it stopped raining, and the roads gradually dried out from then on.

Down to Innerleithen and had a short stop for chafing prevention, jacket removal, and to text Felix with an ETA of 5:30. In slightly more known territory now, but the Innerleithen climb was even nicer than expected. 6k at 1% followed by 5k at 3%. Consumed a pack of oatcakes, slowly. A guy caught me up on the flatter bit and we rode together, at a slightly higher intensity for me, HR in the 140s. Felt my legs getting a bit tired and told him to get going about 2k from the top. Another nice descent before the last 3k at 3% up to 400m and the welcome sight of the pentlands and the seat.

Last big descent before the wiggles and lumpiness on the way in, following cycle route 1 signs until picking up familiar gladhouse roads. One last stop in Bonnyrigg for some more chafing prevention and some chocolate. A slow spin up past King's Acre GC, bottom gear but still seated and comfy, before the usual run into Edi. Arrived at Woodburn, saved the activity (89k), opened the door, and found Finn and Tim heading out for a seat lap! Couldn't say no, knowing the 100k and longest-ride-to-date were on offer. Dropped off the panniers, scranned a kendal mint cake in about 10 seconds and got going.

Not 1 minute after leaving we bump into Felix cycling back from work, and convince him to join, in his jeans on his "rest day". Impeccable vibes, not to be dented by losing one of the four screws holding the pannier rack on (sorry Dad). Quick replacement with a (shinier) screw from Felix's bike we were off again, waving to the first familiar face (JT). The boys dragged me into z3 on the second half of the climb but still felt decent enough. More friendly faces on the way back in, Joe W, the Kirstys and Laura, and a whopping great bunch of EUOCers to top it off.

:)
