Drive up north so opportunity for a nice end to end run. Went from Glen Etive over between the two Buchailles and down to Glen Coe, taking it very easy, lots of walking on the steep climb, then a more runnable gradual descent. Bonus bit of conditioning for the quads, which were feeling a tad sore by the end but hopefully help build a touch more strength too.

Last bit of quad conditioning, gutted haddie, then Nether and Crow, down to Dunsapie and back over to KF. Quads sort of a bit sore but not heavy/achy so much. Feel more used to the hills I think, will find out next week.

Thought I better get some harder running in this week too so 2 x full crags from the road then 20, 30, 40s. Felt a bit tired on the WU but got going ok and feels were helped by a little tailwind. 6:30, 6:22 for the reps. Short reps were fine but wary of doing too much with the old achilles.

Shadowing some corridors then some collecting. Legs holding up decently, though achilles feeling a bit tired on the jog back. Should be fine. Good amount of time in terrain, mix of running and walking.

Legs again feeling terrible when getting up and for the first 10mins (even with the ~20mins mobility and activation pre run that I always do), but after that they felt fine, quads maybe even slightly more alive than previous days. Bit of drizzle was quite nice.

Meadows on another sunny afternoon. Got one L patella twinge which is unsurprising given the quads situation, and also had a slight sense the achilles wasn't 100%. Need to get back in the skog for that one.

Lap of KF then seat, then finished with 4 x 20s strides. Quads doms bad to start with but warmed up and generally felt a bit better than yesterday. Either way, think I'll try keep up the miles rather than back off, they'll come round eventually.

Easy meadows. Despite the obvious quad doms (L noticeably more than R) the legs actually felt quite smooth and ticked over nicely.

Back up to about normal mileage now, although no cycling for the first week since November and also slacking on core.

Dollar Hill Race.

A little apprehensive with this being my longest fell race ever and with the quads feeling tired even before starting, so knew I probably wasn't going to be that competitive and would just try enjoy it.

Started in the fast wave (of 50), quickly let the front pack go but probably still started too hard, and trickled backwards up the first climb. Settled into the power walk on the steep bit but maybe still going at an unsustainable effort. Passed by Jill at the top and a few more from my wave I think, felt like I was close to last out of my wave but was also passing lots of people from earlier waves (often using them as an excuse to sit behind them and chill for a bit).

Quads could move ok on the flats but feeling sore on anything steep downhill and tired on uphills. Also had some feet/shoe problems, that super friction-y burn and also too loose for te descents, so ended up having a couple of shoelace stops. Had a gel at ~50 and sips of water fairly often and didn't totally bonk from the heat, although was feeling close on the last big climb.

Hit the last descent and anything remotely steep was very unpleasant, quads starting to giving up and feet still sore too. Almost walking the steepest bits. Still running ok on the flat though and managed a 3:35 last k back along the road passing a few folk. Overall it was a memorable day out but also maybe not the best idea when your quads feel domsy before starting. I wonder how long until they feel normal again, hopefully by the 6 days.

Meadows on another belter of a morning. Quads feeling very tired, no better really than the start of the week. Tomorrow will be interesting, will just try and enjoy it and probably not hammer the descents too hard, we'll see.

Couldn't resist another run when Sam said he was heading out for easy meadows. Very enjoyable and ended up doing 4 x 20s gentle strides up middle meadow. Quads a little more alive perhaps.

Cumbrian Galoppen at Angle Tarn Pikes.

Fond memories of this area from 2015 hence the effort to get here. Pretty tough with the hills and marshes, sure it felt easier 6 years ago, was probably 5+ kg lighter for a start. Still good fun boshing about though and a decently clean run, but managed to miss a control near the end (just getting ahead of myself and similar shapes around so didn't realise). A long trip for an mp but hey ho, doesn't really change an enjoyable weekend.

WD, achilles decent, got a few feelings from it on the course, mainly in the first half, but overall pretty good. Fine on this and the cycle back.

Went for a little dip in Ullswater then back to Penrith. Legs not appreciating any climbs so took the main road despite my hatred of them. Whatever that quote is about hatred actually being fear probably true here though. I guess it was ok, and thankfully not raining.

Penrith train station to Glenridding to camp. Not the ideal set up with a double rucksack but it worked well enough. Raining lightly on this, and also felt uphill for the majority (although a very nice descent from Dochray).

Trying to get rid of the quad doms with a bit of quicker running on the flat. 10 x 1min (1:30) on KF grass. Unsurprisingly felt a bit awkward running fast after no flat sessions in a long time but overall it was fine and no worrying niggles from the legs.

Shortonhall. Quads absolutely mashed still, to the point where it felt pretty unganely to run. Knee warmed up ok as usual, although quads started to give up the ghost for a minute on the descent by braids and knee went to a 2-3, but then settled down ok. Back in time to watch Spud, Thompas and Bobby at woc.

Pentlands from Swanston with Felix. Pretty warm and humid but very nice underfoot conditions. Felt like a bit of a raz on some of the climbs but not too concerned, not like I sessioned yesterday or anything. Quads feeling pretty tired, not fully recovered after Wednesday, then with the cycle too they were feeling sub optimal from the start. Still doing their job though, knees fairly solid.

Jog round the links, hot and sunny. Quads pretty tired and sore and calves tight but no niggles as such, achilles fine and knee ok once it had warmed up. Also had the vaccine at about 4pm but felt alright on this.
